It was a simple transaction yet not at all a common one in this era, where nothing is made to last and the customer is frequently left to fend for him/herself. When I'm due for a new pair of eyewear (soon), I'll be back there because I value this connection and value the expertise of Mr. Pierson. As with everything, there's always a cheaper price and infinite selection to be found elsewhere. But due to this experience, in part, finding the absolute cheapest set of frames is way down my list of buying priorities. Now I want nothing more than to take my prescription in and let Mr. Pierson handle the rest - because his brand of professionalism is precisely what goes missing when national chains march in and undercut and put out of business local stores. I'm finally drawing the line in the sand - and I feel great about it.

Apparently one of the screws holding my lenses in their frame decided to take a permanent side trip and this morning one lense popped out. I could find no relief in Bar Harbor and called Dr. Albert's office. They said come by and they would see what they could do. Although they appeared to be busy when I showed up they immediately knew who I was and said "Sit down and relax and we will take a look". I had only a few minutes to "relax" before they fixed my glasses but during that time I looked around. My impression was that this office was very well organised/run and the ladies that helped me were courteous and obviously competent. Also, there was a large display area for frames, etc. so that patients would have a big selection to choose from. To top if off they would not accept any payment. Went in, met the owner and assistant, they were very friendly and did my adjustment for free. On reaching my car, I slipped and fell on the ice. It was apparent to me my ankle was broken, so I sent my daughter in for help. She came back saying no one was willing to help, and the doctor had told her she parked in the wrong area. We then figured out how to slide me-bottom down on the ice, I was able to get next to my car. While attempting to hoist myself into the car without putting weight on my ankle, the doctor came out, took a picture, and again informed me we had parked in the wrong area. I was able to get myself in the van, my daughter drove me to the hospital, where it was confirmed my ankle was broken. I realize in this day and age everyone is afraid of being sued, and I'm definitely not going to pursue that, people fall on ice all the time in winter. However the appalling way this was handled was not acceptable. How unkind.

It had the only eye doctor that did not give me a disrespectful hard time about refusing eye dilation. Dr. Vachon's exam and diagnosis, even with my cataract, was spot-on and I can now see things I've not seen in years. Eye dilations are for medical diagnosis only and not needed just to get an updated vision prescription. In fact, the only poor eye exam prescription outcomes I've had in my entire life - 4 of them in 2 states - were the result of eye dilations and the exams had to be redone every time, even when an ophthalmologist did them - at an average additional cost of $60! Penobscot's optician, Rebecca, also did an excellent job with their selection of frames and with fitting and finish work and my new glasses were ready in half the estimated time. I would highly recommend Penobscot Eye Care to anyone.

In May I went to see Dr. Gurney and had an exam and ordered Progressives. The new glasses did not seem right for me for reading, but I thought I'd try and get used to them, as was suggested before. They do not test new glasses before you leave, which it seems they should. I finally tried a pair of cheap Walmart reading glasses. Could read much better than my $350 progressives! My wife urged me to go back to the office and when I did I was told the reader part was -2.50, when the cheap ones that worked on me were -4.00! Seems like a goof on the prescription to me. Not sure. But since a few months had passed, June said I was out of luck. She also said something about the far vision (top) of the lens would affect the bottom, which seems wrong to me. My wife had gone back a couple months ago and had her new glasses changed due to a wrong prescription. Her second pair still isn't right, but she refuses to go back again. We will not return here.
