The Sterling location isn't as big as some of the other climbing gyms, but it is plenty for a climbing session. I will say, the one issue of this location is that since it's a little small, the bouldering section is a little cramped in spacing compared to their other location in Alexandria. Not a a big problem at all, but can be during peak hours. Their staff here are very nice and friendly as well. Always a good group of people being welcoming to new guests and members. The facility itself is also well kept and clean.

I tell myself that making time and partnering up is better motivation and will ensure that I actually make the time to work on my fitness. Forget all that. I come for the eye candy. Plus, I lie to myself and imagine that if I keep up with climbing, I'll also have a ridiculously ripped, lean, toned body with a perfect V-shaped torso. No, don't burst my little dream bubble. Fair warning. Until you obtain a membership card (which took us roughly three weeks from signing up), you'll have to deal with the stench by the front desk. Our suspicious: the stack of rental climbing shoes that have been worn by countless people. Fortunately, I can now hold my breath or breathe through my mouth as I navigate past the worst of it. Once you're back into the main part of the gym, it's much easier to breathe. With plenty of bouldering, huge tall walls for belay climbing or top roping (which I still haven't experienced myself), and a couple of auto-belays, there has always been ample room to find a wall to climb. Plus, membership benefits include free yoga classes, a significant discount on climbing gear (which, believe me, I looked... it's never on sale anywhere), and a huge benefit on pricing for classes. The staff here seem well-informed and helpful, and it's always been easy enough to hunt someone down for questions about the gym, equipment, or suggestions on how to improve. After about a month, I can legitimately say that I'm pretty addicted. Whether it's on the climbing itself, or the view... well, jury's still out.

The climbing was fun for everyone, from the kids to the adults who joined in. A big bonus was the coffee shop downstairs--it provided a comfortable space for refreshments (outside food and drink permitted) and gave parents a place to relax, chat, and mingle while the kids climbed. Highly recommend for birthday parties or group events!

Was excited to give this place a try since I've only been to Sportrock and Movement. The Facility: Nice and spacious building. Has a nice variety of walls for you to choose from (Cave, overhang and moon board). They also have a small little fitness area with dumbbells, barbells and some cardio equipment as well. The mats are are well cushioned too, to catch your falls and there are plenty of cubbies to store your gear and be put out the way. The Routes/Grades: Their routes are on the v-scale and were somewhat accurate to the grades from what I've seen. I saw a mix of grades that I did and didn't agree with, and I can see this being a little hard for some beginner climbers. But, my biggest problem with this gym is that the holds here are all old and dirty. For the most part, the whole gym was kind of dirty and didn't looked well kept. For some of the routes I was on, the holds didn't make it enjoyable as dirty holds left me slipping off my feet. They were quite dusty and full of rubber shavings and the whole gym didn't look well kept at all. The Staff: Staff here are very friendly! They were helpful with any questions I had and were respectful. Overall, a 3/5. Was quite disappointed with my experience here at Vertical. For the amount it cost for a day pass, I would look elsewhere like Movement or Sportrock.

There are some vestigial "storefronts" inside of the gym. Perhaps it was a small facsimile "old town" or showroom before. Either way, the climbing was... decent. They use a grade range that usually erred on the low end of the range. For instance a V4-V6 was most likely a v4. The setting was not very creative. There was perhaps a few that were tricky. For instance there was a dual text white v4 (in pictures). The staff seemed sad... not at all interested in engaging with customers. In fact, there were no customers. We went on a weekend and it was practically empty except brand new people trying out climbing for the first time. And one crusher. There's always that one crusher. I really wished there was a sense of community. The gym seemed void of the typical vibe you get at a climbing gym. There was a lot of empty, unused spaces that could be filled in with climbing walls. Even though I went with a group, the gym seemed empty and lonely.

Excellent place to boulder!…read more We're from CO and while visiting family in VA, they decided they were game to try bouldering. My husband & I do this fairly regularly in CO, but this was the first time for my SIL & two of my nieces. The facility was bright, open and CLEAN!, the routes were fantastic (great job route-setters!), and the staff was really friendly! We were really impressed with how we were greeted upon entry and given a tour of the space. And to add to that, did I mention how much we loved the routes?? They were super fun to climb- the V0's & 1's were legitimately 0s & 1s and the rating system made sense as we climbed higher V-routes. It seems like this would make sense across any gym, but as we'd been on vacation for three weeks & stopped in at a number of climbing gyms on the east coast, this is NOT always the case- so we were SUPER happy to see that the ratings & the progressions were solid. Needless to say, I think we've gotten a few more family members hooked on bouldering. I'm SO happy that they got to experience their first time at your gym- a great environment makes all the difference!

The zip line is pretty fun, even for adults. The staff are pretty helpful in explaining how things work and assist in putting on the harness and taking it off. The slide is also really fun, you get a mat to slide on and go down head-first on what seems a 90 degree plummet and land on an inflatable pillow. One thing I did see people struggling with is the anchoring point of the harness to the rock climbing rig. You gotta have some strength to properly rig it and kids often need assistance. In some of the reviews I read prior to visiting, people said it gets really busy on the weekends and the lines can really put a damper on the experience. We chose to go on a weekday and there were no lines.

Safety is, of course, a top priority, but the current setup is completely inefficient. There simply aren't enough staff members to strap in patrons quickly, leading to an excessive line that ate into the time we paid for. To make matters worse, the climbing walls and ropes course require separate harnesses, forcing kids to stand in line TWICE just to participate. If I had paid for two hours and spent half of that just waiting, I would be beyond frustrated. This setup is unfair to families who expect to actually enjoy the attractions--not just stand in line. I strongly encourage management to look at how other adventure parks operate and adopt a more efficient system. More harness stations and dedicated staff at multiple locations throughout the park would make a huge difference. If things don't change, I imagine many customers (myself included) will hesitate to return and may even request refunds. How can a business thrive if paying guests spend more time waiting than playing? I truly hope improvements are made because this place has so much potential--but right now, it's just not working.

However, within minutes, it became clear that this facility is dangerously understaffed and falling apart. My biggest concern is safety. The few staff members present were completely checked out. Instead of monitoring the equipment, they were grouped together looking at their phones. This was terrifyingly apparent on the high ropes course. I watched a young boy climb a set of pillars nearly 15 feet in the air before the attendant finally looked up from her phone to intervene. In an environment like this, that level of negligence is unacceptable. The facility itself looks ok at first glance but is in disrepair. Large strips of rubber were falling off the warped wall, and the general maintenance is appalling. I've attached a photo of the stairs where the lighting fixtures have been ripped out, leaving exposed wiring hanging open right where kids are walking. Between the distracted staff and the crumbling infrastructure, this place is a liability. It feels unsafe and frankly needs to be shut down before a child gets seriously hurt. We will not be returning.
