Great climbing gym here in NOVA. The Sterling location has plenty of bouldering walls alongside with Top Rope/Lead and Auto-Belay. The Sterling location isn't as big as some of the other climbing gyms, but it is plenty for a climbing session. I will say, the one issue of this location is that since it's a little small, the bouldering section is a little cramped in spacing compared to their other location in Alexandria. Not a a big problem at all, but can be during peak hours. Their staff here are very nice and friendly as well. Always a good group of people being welcoming to new guests and members. I tell myself that I come here because it's good for me. That it's far more fun than just going to a regular boring gym to move around some heavy plates of metal or to set myself up like a rodent on a wheel and go absolutely nowhere really fast for an hour. I tell myself that making time and partnering up is better motivation and will ensure that I actually make the time to work on my fitness. Forget all that. I come for the eye candy. Plus, I lie to myself and imagine that if I keep up with climbing, I'll also have a ridiculously ripped, lean, toned body with a perfect V-shaped torso. No, don't burst my little dream bubble. Fair warning. Until you obtain a membership card (which took us roughly three weeks from signing up), you'll have to deal with the stench by the front desk. Our suspicious: the stack of rental climbing shoes that have been worn by countless people. Fortunately, I can now hold my breath or breathe through my mouth as I navigate past the worst of it. Once you're back into the main part of the gym, it's much easier to breathe. With plenty of bouldering, huge tall walls for belay climbing or top roping (which I still haven't experienced myself), and a couple of auto-belays, there has always been ample room to find a wall to climb. Plus, membership benefits include free yoga classes, a significant discount on climbing gear (which, believe me, I looked... it's never on sale anywhere), and a huge benefit on pricing for classes. The staff here seem well-informed and helpful, and it's always been easy enough to hunt someone down for questions about the gym, equipment, or suggestions on how to improve. After about a month, I can legitimately say that I'm pretty addicted. Whether it's on the climbing itself, or the view... well, jury's still out. read more

For my 400th review I'm celebrating the joy I felt at getting a membership here. Might be a tad premature to go 5 stars when I don't have many other baselines to compare this to, but what the hell. I'm slowly but surely conditioning my T-rex arms to be functional, and regaining some of the tone I once had during my martial arts training phase. I wish my social/work/personal schedules allowed me to visit more often, but I definitely feel like I'm getting my money's worth. The adult non-family rate at the moment is $65/mo for a year sub, $75/mo for half a year, and $85 for month-to-month. After 3-4 visits you've basically broken even for the month, but I've been happy to come back to SR3 two to three times a week. Slowly taking advantage of the member's discount on gear as well! Love the sign-on specials they've had going these past two months. The initiation fee is a pretty steep dissuader, but last month they knocked the $95 down to $5 if you brought in school supplies, and this month they offered the same deal for pumpkins. They're big on safety, so non-members will have to keep filling out the waiver form every visit. My first visit was augmented by Jon R.'s guest discount, and I've since paid it forward to Jeff W. with two of my passes. Definitely agree with Kevin L., the amount of eye candy here that Wednesday night was redonkulous. Shirtless or not, it was pretty amazing to watch these athletes traverse the wall with ease. Eventually the eye candy becomes background noise, though. I definitely leeched confidence by trailing behind a mom spotting her son on the V0s. I figured if a nine-year-old kid was able to go as far as he did, I could too. ;) I'm a little bit of the shy type at the gym, but the climbing community members at this location seem friendly. I was also amused to realize that I ran into a friend from middle school there but we didn't greet each other because we each figured the other person's resemblance was more coincidental than fact. I'm relieved that the staff members have been easy to approach, and it's nice that they occasionally put out snack bowls for people who are too hardcore to remember to eat. Appears that a decent amount of essentials are sold here. Started taking yoga classes here Tuesdays and Thursdays. I get why Jon R. was pretty unimpressed by Jennifer's vinyasa flow curriculum on Tuesdays. It's definitely struck me as being more about fitness and exertion, with a playful goal towards the eight-legged elephant pose. The consensus seems to be that Ann's class (Iyengar Method of Hatha Yoga) is better geared towards personal development, both spiritually and physically. I'd call her a hippie if I thought people would take it without the negative connotation. She encourages questions, has a very positive outlook, and is pleasantly serious. The room for yoga is next door to the workout room, and Sportrock provides the blocks, belts, mats, and blankets, but I'm probably going to bring my own mat just for hygiene's sake. Room is swept regularly, and room capacity is definitely being pushed on Thursdays, even if the sign-in sheet looks sparse. Excited about eventually taking the climbing classes here and maybe getting into the top-rope stuff, but for the time being my mildly acrophobic self is happy to boulder around the V2 level. I'm finding route difficulties to be slightly inconsistent, but I do love a challenge. read more

My whole family loves sportrock. All staff are very kind and helpful and the facilities are great.

TBH I prefer Earth Treks but Sportrock is much closer to where I live and it's less pricey. It was my first time at this specific location and the instructors were all very friendly : ) $25 unlimited climbing from 12-5 pm on weekends with a belaying instructor! Pretty good deal if you plan on climbing a lot, and I definitely left with sore forearms. If it's not your very first time climbing, I'd recommend skipping the 5.6 and starting with at least a 5.7 so you can save a bit of energy for more difficult routes. Will be back for open climb again soon! read more

Been a long time sportsrock member now and I've done earthtreks and even a local rock climbing place in NC but nothing gives me the feeling that sportsrock does. I think it it just has to do with the way the routes are set up and the difficulty of course. Personally I am a fan of the interweaving walls. It makes it easier at times to reset in the middle of problem if you can't figure it out and I think it just comes down to preference of style. Big fan, still coming here, and I encourage others to give it a shot! read more

I can't give it a "5", because I've never been to any other climbing gym so I really have nothing to compare it to! However, from my two experiences here, it's been great. They have two "auto belays" so if you go alone, you don't need to find someone to help you. Those things are also smooth... the cadillacs of climbing, in my humble opinion. I've never been climbing before and the staff was super duper nice. They showed me everything I needed to do to be safe. The first time I went, i just tried it out with the auto belay. The second time I went, I took the beginners $25 class. It was really informative, and showed us how to tie knots and climb safely. It included the harness and shoe rental. I bought shoes, so I can't comment on those. After you take that beginners class, they give you coupons for the next classes or $10 for the next time you pay them a visit. I'm definitely going back for the climbing technique classes. read more

I am a Northern Virginia native that has relocated to Denver. Almost every time I come home for a family visit I make a point to go to Sportrock to do some climbing! The front desk staff are very friendly and helpful. I alway rent my gear since I don't live in the area any longer. The shoes and harnesses are always clean and in good condition. They have a good selection of different climbing walls and have a large section for bouldering as well that to me is a larger bouldering section than some of the other rock climbing gyms I have been to. Even though this location is smaller than some of the mega-rock climbing gyms in the DC-area, they have runs that go very very high up and really test your endurance! Okay, so if you work in real estate, the slogan is, "Location, location, location", right? Well, I've got my own slogan for this place: "Eye candy, eye candy, eye candy." Yes, ladies (and guys, especially my climbing partner), you can come here to get fit *and* have some wonderful scenery to look at. Kevin and I purchased a membership and I'm finding that you can really make up the cost in a short period of time. First off, their equipment is pretty reasonably priced and, if you're a member, you get 20% off. We both needed a pair of shoes and tried on two different pairs at SR. Being the frugal folks we are, we both checked the net to see if we could find 'em cheaper anywhere else. Nope, so we bought 'em at SR. Kevin also purchased his harness kit there for much less than what he could find on line. The walls vary in their difficulty; I'm still around the 5.6-5.7 level but hope to kick it up a notch sometime soon. I never really knew how much I was "not fond of (this sounds better than afraid, tsk!)" heights until I started climbing and envisioned myself falling. Eeek. So far, the staff we have encountered have been very friendly and cool to talk to (especially Hayley (sp?), she is super cool). I'm looking forward to kicking up my skill level and taking my climbing outdoors one day. My goal is to do an outdoor climb at Great Falls this summer and I'm looking forward to it! The nice thing about this place is the number of restaurants that are close by for that post-climb meal (i.e. Sweet Water, O'Faolains, Taste of Saigon, etc.). One bad thing about when you first walk in is the funk coming from the rental shoes. It will literally take your breath away on a hot, humid day. It pays to be a member when you can walk in with your card in hand, scan it and keep on going so you're not exposed to the smell for more than a few seconds. In case you get thirsty -and you will- , there is a drinking fountain and a machine that sells drinks. It gets warm in there; bringing a drink will probably be helpful. read more

Good place for climbing if you do bring your own partner. The requirements on harnesses is a bit steep, a buddy of mine had a harness that he bought recently, and he wasn't allowed to use it because it didn't have a loop specifically for belaying. The classes are well taught, and never over crowded. I enjoyed the classes I took and learned a lot. The bouldering walls tend to have a more consistent level of activity on them, and the auto-ropes are always in use. A small complaint - the staff puts out snacks once a week for the climbers, and one of the items provided were nuts. After eating, climbers transferred this to the walls. Those who are allergic (myself included) picked up the nut oil and reacted to it. Not a good idea! Overall, a good gym for climbing. And they provide courses in setting up your own ropes if you want to venture outdoors during the summer. read more

I had a lot of fun here. I brought a groupon for the climb for myself and one other. I was able to get equipment, training classes, and free climb with the Groupon (I wasn't expecting). My instructor was great, humorous, helpful, knowledgeable, and straight to the point. The place is huge. They do have lockers with keys but it's best to keep valuables with you and dress appropriately for the climb and indoor temperature. There are climbs for everyone from beginning to advance. I believe you can host events here. They gave everyone an incentive after our training class for another climb with equipment included. The only thing about here is that it is bit hard to find if you're not a regular. GPS would take you one destination and it doesn't seem to be it. Call them if your lost. Sportrock #3 is a pretty decent place to climb. Although it does not offer as many routes or amenities as the monstrous Earth Treks gym in Rockville, this Sportrock location is usually less crowded and is a good place for those who live or work along the Toll Road. This gym, like others, offers classes for climbers of all levels. Because Sportrock 3 is less busy/popular than other climbing gyms in the DC region, classes are usually smaller in size... thus you'd probably get more one-on-one instruction... which I think is better. So, even though my heart belongs to Earth Treks, I recommend this gym to novice and serious climbers alike. read more

This place is definitely a step up from my old climbing gym in Virginia Beach. The rock climbing walls are very high, and there is plenty of bouldering walls as well. Also, there are 3 auto-belay devices in the gym. The staff is extremely welcoming and nice. They are all enthusiastic about climbing and are always willing to help out. The gym is crowded during the late afternoon / early evenings, but I still manage to find areas to climb. Though the membership prices may seem high, you are definitely paying for a quality and safe gym! UPDATE: I had to cancel my month-to-month membership when I started to travel for work. Unfortunately, I was told that I would have to pay the initiation fee again if I wanted to start my membership -- I was surprised since I was originally told by the staff the initiation fee was a "one time fee" to get into the system. I'm not sure if this was just a miscommunication, but I am definitely weary of signing up for membership again at this gym. read more

Nice people, good routes, clean, great gym. It was pretty crowded this past Saturday afternoon when we got there at 4pm, so we went shopping at Costco and came back an hour later. By then, people were filtering out, and by the time we left at 6:30, it was quiet except for a group of kids on one end of the wall. It seemed like there was a good variety of top rope climbing, maybe not as much bouldering but still plenty to choose from. Even when it was fairly busy, we didn't have trouble getting a route. As a beginner, I found a few 5.7/5.8s to keep me busy - only saw two 5.6 routes, on the left side, which the kids were all over. A lot of the wall has a pretty good overhang so I definitely like I got in a good workout and have something to work on next time. I met some nice folks from the Alexandria Sportrock who were out here checking this place out, and I'm hoping to get over there soon - they said the Alexandria location (walking distance from Van Dorn metro) just expanded and now has a lot to offer, including a new yoga studio for free member classes. Cost was $18 for a non-member to climb, which seems pretty comparable to what I was paying at gyms in Portland, OR. Not cheap, but if I keep doing it I would consider getting a membership. There is also some fitness equipment and classes to take advantage of for members. Look forward to coming back soon! read more

Excellent facility and I'm not so sure why it took me so long to visit this place since my other half is part monkey. Yes this place reeks of feet but you'll get over it within 10-15 minutes. I'm sensitive to smells but the excitement of waiting to climb, learn and act like a kid again over powered the stink. My only gripe was one particular employee that could have handled our experience a little more professionally. We went on a Saturday afternoon aka little people everywhere. Lots of kids but they didn't bother me it was the soccer moms that did. Now I went with two avid and experienced climbers and we had been waiting for a section of the wall for me to try out (since I'm a beginner) and it finally opened up. Before I could even tie in we were kicked off by a rude staff member so that he could tie in a soccer mom with her kids. As we untied without question (because I didn't mind since she had kids) I could hear her bitch right behind us about how she didn't like waiting and so on. Tip for employees: Next time ASK politely how many climbs/climbers we have left or come to us 5 minutes before you need the wall for someone else. You get a free pass this time. read more

Fun place to go on a Saturday morning. My brother and some friends took me here after I stayed the night in VA with them. It wasn't very crowded which was nice. There was a couple of birthday parties going on but the kids stayed mainly to the belaying walls. We bouldered on the other side of the facility, which was fun. This was my first time here (or bouldering in general) but I can see why my brother and friend are really starting to get into it. Fun activity that incorporates physical exercise and mental and emotional courage (some of the climbs require you to push yourself). And a side note: there was some eye candy if that is a bonus for you. There was a mix of n00bs like us and veterans but everyone seemed to get along and the staff is always around and helpful. read more

Great rock climbing gym in the Sterling, VA area. Ended up climbing here on a Wednesday and can comment on the following: - Wednesday snacks were a nice touch: GORP, M&Ms, etc. - Rock walls are about 2-3 times higher than my usual local gym in NJ. - Nearly every wall can be lead climbed. - All routes have assigned ratings and names. Found it nifty that new routes are voted upon to determine difficulty. - You need your own ATC and belay biner. No requirement to use daisy chain floor anchors. A lot of NJ gyms coddle you giving an experience not conducive to being comfortable in an outdoors environment. - Daily rates can be expensive. - Memberships have initiation fees. Also, the rate is a bit high, especially given initiation fees, etc. I will be back, but only for daily climbing when in the area. Dont think its a good membership deal. In NJ, I break even for the month in only 5 days of climbing (and I have enough money for some beer leftover!). read more

I took my 7 and 10 yr olds here on a teacher workday. I was pleased there was an open climb time in the middle of the day that we could take advantage of, and no crowd. None of us are "climbers" but we thought we'd give it a shot. We had no equipment or knowledge base... and we needed none of that. I was pleased that they offer a variety of difficulties and lots of instruction. My 7 yr old says: Sportrock is a good place to go if kids want to climb on different heights of rock walls. There is a lot of space. Open Climb was 5 hours... no way we could stay that long. If you *can* do 5 hours, $25 is probably not so bad, but for just a couple hours it's a little steep. Overall, a fun experience... something other than the "same old, same old". We may be back again. read more

Definitely not as good as the one out in Alexandria. It's hard to find (-1) and not nearly as large (-1) or easy to get to unless you have a car. Their staff is pretty friendly. If you prefer to climb at an indoor place that isn't crazily packed then go here. Otherwise, the Alexandria spot is the place to be. read more

Coming to climb here has been one of the best decisions I have made. I only joined a month and a half ago, and I might move soon. + consistent route setting 5.7-9 + not crowded + tall (maybe taller than SR Alex?) + the drive... mostly against traffic + wall features, esp the cave area & the "buttresses" on either side. + open til 11pm -5.10's aren't labeled a,b, c, d -the drive... feels like going out to the styx -lead climbing: quickdraws are sometimes ever so slightly manky & always less smooth to clip than Earthtreks... but then again that makes it a little bit extra of a forearm workout, which is what we all want anyway. FYI: autobelayers are still out of commission until further notice : ( SR Sterling has 1 treadmill, 1 elliptical, 1 recumbent stationary bike, a pull-up/dip thingy & a bunch of weights (dumbells). I am currently a member of both SportRock & Earthtreks (mainly b/c ET Rockville has gotten insanely crowded in the evenings & closes 1 hrs earlier than SR). SR Sterling & ET Rockville are much more pleasant than SR Alexandria & ET Columbia. The routes at both gyms feel quite different and right now I like them both. Alternating from one gym to the other are very complimentary workouts. read more

I dropped off a child at a birthday party. I filled out the online forms at home prior to dropping her off. Ten minutes after dropping her off the hostess calls and says that I need to fill out the form. I said that I did. Ten minutes later another message. I drive back and fill out the form inside. Twenty minutes later my daughter can't stop crying. The staff in the front did not notify the staff in the back that we filled out the form again. My daughter was standing for over an hour looking at everyone climbing. The staff saw her crying and did not apologize. We had to leave the party. I Just quit working here after nearly 4 years to further my education, But here is how I would lay it out. Staff-5- Works great as a team, Great management, Awesome place to work so the staff enjoy their job. When someone enjoys their job they put more effort into it, this is why the staff are very bright and happy to help. Location- 3 - Hidden deep in the belly of an industrial park that even second time visitors sometimes get lost on their way. Not to mention, the owners of the buildings don't allow more than one sign to promote your business, so we can't fix that, sorry guys. Daily walk-in rates - 3 - Is it fairly expensive for a first time go-er. Expect to pay in the range of 20-30 $ BUT!!!! Sign up for the classes!!!! This is the best way to get what you pay for!!! 25$ is all gear, climbing for the day, and instruction on how to belay and tie knots!!! 28$ for all the above without instruction. Take the classes - 5+ - The quick start package is the cheapest way to get the most bang for your buck. 3 days, 2 days are instructed, for 75$.... it makes sense! Not to mention the classes at sterling are very personal, we hardly ever have a 5 or more person class. Which makes it easy on the instructor and the student. Kids programs - 5 - Kids have it too easy, what with their strength to weight ratio so much greater than ours. The only thing they have to get past is the fear! The kids programs here are top notch when it comes to giving your kids self confidence and an amazing work out. Bring the kids in on weekends or kids nite, or else they don't have much to do :/ Routes - 4 - Jeremy Hardin is an amazing route setter, Best of the best routes in the world. Sportrock is lucky to have him! BUT, He is the main route setter for both sterling and alexandria. James sets some stuff in alexandria and claudio sets occasionally at both gyms. So if you don't like the way jeremy sets (VERY few do), then you are screwwed. Cleanliness - 4/5 - Depending on who is opening and closing the gym, the gym can be spotless or chalky. Most of the managers that have been there a long time do a perfect job, some of the new managers are kind of spotty. Mostly because they don't know the ins-outs yet. Overall - 5 - Great place for first timers and experts alike. Everyone that comes and has been to another climbing gym, will most likely rank us at the top. Be sure to go there soon. Bought a livingsocial deal for a basic skills course in rock climbing and went with my girlfriend on a Monday. The staff was very helpful, and coincidentally, so was everyone else! Our instructor taught us how to make a figure 8 knot, how to affix our harnesses to the rope, how to properly belay, and common climbing terms. All while remaining pleasant and helpful. The place does smell a bit, but hey, it's an activity center, not a garden. Overall, the place is big, open, staffed with courteous individuals, friendly to beginners, and, most importantly, fun! I am very new to Sportrock and to climbing, like a baby new as I have fairly weak muscles and terrible balance. But with my limited knowledge I think Sportrock in Sterling is great. I took the Beginner's class three times and the first two times I thought I'd come back and do the belay test, start climbing for fun, and never did. So the third time I finally committed to a membership and so far it's been a great activity to do with my husband. The staff I've encountered have all been pleasant, friendly, and helpful. They are encouraging without being pushy - which is nice. Routes are marked fairly well and other climbers are pretty courteous, and focused on their own thing (*with one exception - see next paragraph). They have standard gym equipment, rockclimbing gym equipment, and hold the occasional yoga class here, too. Sportrock offers a variety of climbing classes and also some outdoor excursions if that's what you want to get into. Seems like a great sport to take up as a kid, you learn a lot of great skills (both physical and mental), make friends, build confidence, and there's not so much pressure - everyone learns at different speeds and that's cool. There are a good amount of kids here and they are pretty inspiring to see climb around with ease (usually bouldering). There are of course shirtless dudes climbing, too, which I would guess is standard, I have no idea. So while I've had positive experiences so far I am docking a star for two reasons. First reason is that it smells so, so badly. Everyone's sweating and stuff, understandable, but they need a better ventilation system, or maybe open the doors, because a couple floor fans just don't cut it. Eventually you get used to the stench, but for the first hour or so it's distracting. *Second reason is that while climbing is an awesome social activity and it's a great place for people to make friends and hang out, there is maybe too much hanging out on the mats/floor. Groups of younger people (teenagers or early 20s? I can't tell) lie down or sit on the mats near the bouldering walls for hours on end. They are somewhat intrusive, and seem to make it difficult to make good use of the walls in those areas. What I'm saying is Sportrock probably needs more seating areas and to encourage people who aren't actively climbing to seek refuge elsewhere until they're ready to get back up on the walls. All in all though, if you're looking for a different kind of work out, this is a great place to start. People of all shapes and sizes, and differing levels of abilities, will feel comfortable here. After reading the reviews about stinky shoes at the front desk, I was not excited to put my own stinky feet into the already-stinky shoes. However, I really wanted to go bouldering for the first time and don't have the proper shoes. Since this is the first time I've ever tried bouldering, I don't have any place to compare it to. I'd seen the Pinnacle in the Seattle REI store. And after going to Sportrock and trying bouldering, I realized that I'm glad I went here instead of climbing at the REI since I honestly didn't get any higher that would require a harness. The only downside is the stinky shoes...can't they PLEASE invest in some Febreeze?!?! I really had a fun time and the environment was really laid back and wasn't busy on a Sunday afternoon. As for the eye candy, I'd really like to know when I should be going, since the only other people climbing at the time were 12 years old! read more

I had a great time here instructor(I had the guy with the long red beard) was nice very informative the basics class to teach you all you needed to know to start. The staff is helpful and keeping an eye out for you if you're a newbie.I wasn't expecting it to be such a hard task but climbing really takes some energy strength and grip strength. Went there for a day activity best $15 I ever spent thanks to LivingSocial. I will probably go to the one closer to me next time but since it's a good workout I'll probably keep going to change up my routine workout schedule. read more

Took my kids here couple times, it is an ok place to kill some energy, but make sure u check for the wait time as it could be LONG even if the line is only 3 or 4 deep. Climbzone at Laurel is much more fun and suitable for kids. read more

This place was great. The staff were nice, there were different options of climbing, the indicated levels for climbing (beginners to experts...), and was spacious. It is definitely a great workout. Went here with a livingsocial deal. Best deal ever and definitely worth it. My bf and I and 2 other people were in the same group. The lesson was very thorough and lasted about an hour or so. They provide you with all the equipments so you dont even have to worry about bringing shoes. After the lesson is over, you can climb anything on your own for however long you wish to. They give you coupons at the end for you yo visit them again. The location is not as convenient for me but I will definitely be back for some more climbing! read more

This place is fantastic. The staff were extremely helpful, answered all my questions, and really made me feel welcomed. I had a good conversation with a few staff working belay - super friendly. I have acrophobia and wanted to try rock climbing to help get over some of the anxiety as well as practice for mountaineering. They weren't pushy, let me go at my own pace, and were supportive. Even if I couldn't quite conquer my anxiety to summit the wall, I couldn't be happier. I will most definitely go back again. read more
