It has been along time since I felt compelled to write a negative review, but there was only one word to describe the wine we tasted today, "Ewww"! It tasted old and like raisins. There was a weird rust color in the reds. The two stars are because the servers soooo gracious. They really tried hard to talk it up and made us feel welcome and appreciated. I felt sorry for them having to sell this wine. I know everyone's taste is different so I hope for the sake of the wonderful servers some folks enjoy the wine more than we did. read more

We had our May wedding at Mount Palomar and it was absolutely gorgeous! Truly the most breathtaking landscapes in Temecula. So many great spots for photos! We used the barrel room for cocktail hour and then went back outside for the reception. I know this was not a common choice, but I am so happy our guests got to experience both locations (most guests were coming from Arizona and had never been to a winery or barrel room). What a nice welcome we got. After parking our car and walking towards the winery, there is a greeter just as you enter. She pointed us towards the right direction and also let us know where everything else was. We walked farther inside and boy was this place packed. I mean compared to Churon this place had a really nice vibe, was buzzing with energy and just had a really nice feel about it. There are indoor and outdoor tasting areas and seriously, they need it. The inside room has a deli area where you can purchase hummus, cold cuts, cheese from the refrigerator to enjoy. On top of that the deli offers pizzas, sandwiches and wraps which you can order and they'll prepare for you. Here, you purchase a tasting ticket for $10 and then you take that ticket and bring it to your choice of area where you can start enjoying the various wines on offer. We started off with the 2006 Viognier -- very nice! Compared to the Churon Viognier, this was like drinking a cheap Mondavi compared to cask wine. Our 2nd choice was the 2007 Sangiovese Rose -- slightly sweet, very easy to drink. I really enjoyed this. Moving on, we sampled their 2005 Merlot, 2004 Best of Vintage Syrah, 2006 Riesling and the Limited Reserve Port. I would have to say, every single wine here was good -- unlike the wines at Churon which almost always left a harsh after taste on the palate. I absolutely abhor that alcoholic after taste which makes you feel like you had just drank some rubbing alcohol. Everyone agreed that the wines here were far superior! On top of that, every staff member we encountered had a smile on their face and was pleasant and made us all feel welcome. After the tasting, we wandered around the grounds and took in the nice surroundings. Again, while browsing we came across staff members who nodded their heads and said "Welcome" to us -- and this was out of the blue. If you want to have a pleasant experience at a winery in Temecula, this is it! This kind of atmosphere is comparable to the Napa Valley environment -- friendly, professional -- a tad crazy on the weekends. This winery reminds me a bit of V. We had a beautiful day here today. I had to change my reservations a couple of times, this business made it super easy to set up our table. I love the atmosphere! I was starting to feel really pessimistic after having gone to several wineries in Temecula and only tasting so-so to crappy wine. However, all that changed once I had the ones at Mount Palomar Winery! Their wines are FANTASTIC! I love my whites and dessert wines. For $15/pp/6 tastes, I was able to try: 1. 2010 Dry Riesling (very good, slightly sweet) 2. 2010 Sangiovese Rose (very good) 3. Brut Sparkling Wine (good, slightly sweet.) 4. 2011 Riesling (Impressive! BEST riesling I have ever had!) 5. 2011 Cinsaut Blush (sensational, smooth & delicious!) 6. 2010 Solanus (sweet, but not obnoxiously so and smooth) Since my friend went tasting with me, I was also able to taste: Limited Reserve Port, Solera Cream Sherry (sweet, but very strong!), 2011 Castelletto Cortese (very good). I told myself I wouldn't join another wine club, since I already belong to two in Sonoma (Cline Cellars and Jacuzzi Family Wines). But since I was so impressed with the wines I had just tasted, I could not resist!!! The fact that Temecula is so accessible too, helped in my decision. I also ended up purchasing 3 bottles of wine before I left that included: 2011 Cinsaut Blush, 2010 Solanus and the 2011 Riesling. As for the service, very friendly and helpful. I liked that they played 80's music while we were doing our tasting. Last, but not least...YAY FOR CLEAN BATHROOMS! :) One more thing! Summary: Most red wines are very "peppery". Lovely grounds. Server had not tasted any wines prior. Meager pours. $16 for 6 tastes. Dessert wines cost 2 tastes each. Not worth it. My mother, wife, and I went here for the first time on a Sunday afternoon during their Oktoberfest celebration. The grounds look beautiful, but the Oktoberfest accompaniments (decorations, music, games) seemed campy and out of place. There weren't enough people to make it seem worth it. Not really a factor in this review, but just noting that going forward Oktoberfest might not be the way to go in October. We went into the tasting room and purchased two tastings (one to share). Each consisted of 6 tastes for $16. Not a bad price, but nothing stellar. We went to the end of the bar where we were greeted by a young, female server (she and a gentlemen were the only two servers pouring, and he was already handling two couples). She took our tickets and showed us the menus and asked us what we'd like to start with. First problem: virtually every red wine is described as "peppery", having "black pepper", or "bell pepper" in the flavor description. I am not exaggerating. I believe there were 3 or less that didn't indicate that. Now, had we known that in advance, we would not have come to taste here because that is not our style preference. However, there were a number of white wines, a couple of sparking wines, and some dessert wines to try, so theoretically we could still have be fine. Second problem: the dessert wines count as two tastings each (so if you want to try one of the four, that will set you back 1/3 of your tasting allotment, or $5.33 for one taste). We ended up trying the cream sherry and it was disappointing. The dessert wines weren't even that expensive, so it really didn't make sense. Third problem: our server had only tried one of the wines. She said this was day three of working at Mount Palomar, and she couldn't tell us anything about the wines. Do they not train their new employees and have them get familiar with the product before serving guests? It was shocking. Fourth problem: pours were meager. Each pour went to the stopper, and then got a drizzle more. Basically, 1.1 oz or so each (assuming 1 oz stopper). Maybe it sounds bad that I don't think that is sufficient for proper tasting (especially when sharing), and maybe it doesn't matter anyways since the reds here were all peppery, but even the whites that we tried weren't that good and we didn't feel we got any value from the experience. Ultimately, we made a poor choice coming here and we won't be back, but the grounds are lovely. read more

I just got married at Mount Palomar yesterday 10/4/2014 and I could not be happier. Lauren Shields and her team were phenomenal to work with. We booked the venue and date last summer and since then the winery stayed in constant communication with us. The food tasting, wine tasting, and meeting planning before the big day were great experiences and helped set my mind at ease before the wedding. On the actual day of the wedding the venue took care of everything flawlessly and really made sure everything stayed on schedule. On top of the staff the venue itself is breathtaking. Also unlike some of the other wineries in Temecula, Mount Palomar only has one wedding per day and the venue is on top of a hill. You really feel like you and your guests are on your own private mountain. I love this venue! read more

At the Newark, My friends and I are Latino and Chinese and when we went to order food, they told us it would be a 45 minute wait when there was NO ONE in the dining area. Also, we were sat down a good 20 minutes before two white elderly women and they were served and finished up before we even received our meal. And we only ordered a cheese and meat platter, a salad, and a slice of cheesecake. They never came over and asked us for refills in our water or anything. So, we made plans to come and visit. Today was the day, Mount Palomar...here we come. From the moment you drive up the hill onto the property you will be amazed by the size of the property, and the gorgeous views atop the hill. Don't be intimidated by the size, they make you feel right at home. There is plenty of parking. Although, the parking is very "hilly". Ladies, don't wear your heels...you may end up rolling down the steep hill. That would really ruin your wine tasting experience. Rather you come via car, bus, limo or magic carpet...there is plenty of parking to accommodate your vehicular contraption. The open-air tasting area is breathtaking. There is an on-site restaurant (Shorty's Bistro). Also, there are 2 wine tasting bars inside and 1 outside. There is plenty of seating outside as well. Now lets get to the wine: Mount Palomar grows most of their own grapes (excluding the Chardonnay grapes), and their wines are delicious. Solanus, Sherry, Port, Cabernet Sauvignon are some serious 5 Star wines. If you never had the pleasure of tasting their Port and Sherry, get off the computer and run there now. Absolutely amazing. They also had one that tasted like Strawberries. I don't remember the name. Their Wine Club has some great perks. They have the Villa and Estate Wine Club tiers. Their shipments are every other month. With the Villa Tier you get 2 bottles, and the Estate you get 4. To sign up all you have to do is buy 2 (or 4) bottles of wine, and commit for 6 months. So, in the end with the Villa you will have 6 bottles of wine (2 bottles every other month) and Estate 12. You can end your membership after the 6 months or continue. First stop on our Temecula adventure! We came pretty early (10:45am) on a Sunday so there was almost no one here. I loved the setting they had with the tables and hidden areas with benches. Very romantic. We purchased our wine tasting one Groupon and got 6 tastings. We stuck with reds only and they were all very good! Our favorite was Shorty's Bistro Red Blend, so much so that we bought a bottle! I got married at Mt Palomar Memorial Day weekend and it was the best day of my life! The grounds are gorgeous and the food was delicious. We had our cocktail hour outside and then had our reception indoors in the barrel room. The barrel room had a great ambiance and the bartenders were great at quickly filling everyone's wine glasses and giving out beers. Lauren and Cassie were very helpful and a great help on our wedding day. They made sure everything was set up perfectly and kept the day running smoothly. My husband Jimmy and I (wow it still feels crazy to say!) just got married a few weeks ago at Mount Palomar Winery! Not only did we have an amazing experience but from the comments of our guests they did as well. This vineyard is amazing, it is set back from the road unlike many of the other venues in Temecula. Because of this the setting is not only breathtaking but also feels more intimate and secluded. Something that both Jimmy and I really loved was if you choose Mount Palomar to host your wedding, your event will be the only one that night. We visited many other potential venues (somewhere between 6-8) and some of the other venues will allow multiple couples to be married on the same day, NOT Mount Palomar. I really loved having the entire grounds to ourself and our guests. And, the crazy part is that their grounds are huge! There is so much to explore and see at this venue. We had an outdoor ceremony and then continued the night choosing their outdoor reception location, its California might as well take advantage of the great weather!! The temperature was perfect and the day could not have been more beautiful! All of the staff worked so well with us and Lauren the coordinator was wonderful. If you are thinking of getting married at a vineyard I would definitely recommend stopping by Mount Palomar Winery, or even if you would like just a nice glass of wine and something to eat. Why did I wait so long to discover this wine country that was in my own backyard? Especially with the breadth of varietals that these vineyards have to offer which are unlike some of the lower Cali vineyards I've been to where the menus consisted of 10 different kinds of Pinot Grigio...all which sucked. For $10, I got to sample 6 different wines and below are the ones I liked: Mount Palomar 2008 Sangiovese Rose - I am NOT a white wine let alone a rose wine lover at all, but for what it was, it was palatable and not offensive. Mount Palomar 2007 Zinfandel - Easy, quick-finishing and spot-on in flavor to what was listed on the menu. Mount Palomar Zilah 2008 Late Harvest Red Dessert Wine - Ah, dessert wines. I don't really drink them unless I'm wine tasting. I went through a port phase after I saw the movie Amelie but other than that... I probably should have bought a bottle of this... This place was very busy which, for me, is both a positive and a negative. When a tasting room is not so busy, you can actually take the time to get more information about the winery and the grapes. When it's too busy, the guy behind the bar can't spend too much time talking because there are far too many drunk people barking at him for another 1 ounce pour. If I come back to Temecula any time soon, I will definitely hit this place up again, maybe get some food and enjoy the outdoor patio. They have a modest selection of wine accoutrements. Everything from the scenery to the food and most importantly the wine was exquisite! The venue it self is breathtaking at first most of the family was hesitant to make the drive out to Temecula for a wedding but once they arrived everyone was left speechless! The views of the valley, the vineyards how beautiful they looked and the scenery with the sun setting over the hills it looked like something from a movie! Took us a few head-scratching minutes to understand the tasting options on offer, but one of us went with the one we called the 'wine tree' which is a set-menu kind of tasting that gets dropped off to your table, along with some really delicious share plates we ordered, while the other got a more normal tasting where we went up to the bar and ticked off the other red wines we were yet to try. Lots to like here, for my wine tastebuds anyways. Lots of reds, a great variety of tastes and styles. Can get a little busy from the look of it, but the grounds are nice and it was a very pretty spot to stop for a revitalising bite. read more

Attended a concert the other night and our group of 8 purchased a reserved table. We were delighted to be up close until the music started and many in the crowd took advantage of the "dance floor" directly in front of the stage. There went the great view that we paid extra for. Aside from that, the music was great, and we enjoyed several bottles of their nice wines. Unfortunately, the CHP chose to set up a DUI checkpoint, right outside the exit of the parking lot. I think it would have been courteous for the Winery to have made an announcement so that people were not caught off guard. We were lucky to have a "DD" but I'm guessing others did not. A simple public service announcement may have given some the opportunity to find other means of transport or to just sit for a while before driving. read more

[[ Tasting ]]-- I tried from top to bottom on their wine list: Cortese, Sangiovese Rose, Cinsaut, Nouveau, Sweet Riesling, Reserve Port. We also got a small plate of cheese for $5.95 and crackers for $4.50. [[ Service ]]-- ladies here work quickly and to the point. They're not curt nor overly friendly. You get what you pay for! But my party certainly still enjoyed the deal of a tasting. Tip: tell them you've written a yelp review and receive 10% off your wine purchases. Went on a Sunday afternoon. Service was very slow - not our servers' fault as they had not many waiters and many diners to service. I often observed many of the staff hustling from table to table and section to section. We used the Groupon for two tastings and a charcuterie board, which we found to be very generous in terms of serving size. The wine itself was also very good--not quite good enough to warrant the bottle prices, but it's been the happiest I've been with Temecula wine basically ever. They have always had an exceptional view, but now they have a covered outdoor wine tasting bar, a new bistro (to replace their self-service and deli-style counters) with great outdoor seating, and lush olive tree grounds. The food was amazing! I had the turkey sandwich with baked brie, apples, honey on ciabatta bread. The potato salad was a little "peppery" for my taste, but the cucumber salad was spot on. I came here again this past summer. For lunch, they didn't have the old menu as before. This time, things were pricey. My friends and I were hungry so we didn't mind. For an appetizer we had this artichoke/spinach dip in a bread bowl. It was filled with so much mayo. Pretty gross. And for my entree I had this chicken sandwich with a potato salad on the side. The potatoes weren't cooked all the way and the chicken was dry. I was pretty disappointed. However, I'll stick to 3 stars since this place is pretty. read more

Went to Mt Palomar for a wedding rehearsal a few days before the wedding. My gf and I arrived early so we went to the cafe bar. It was fairly busy maybe around 4-5 tables each with groups of 3-8 people. There were two people working, a younger brunette with glasses and a taller guy. Went to the bar to take part in the half off cocktail happy hour. I wanted a vodka red bull... the woman said that the man would be right up to make it. When he came up I tried to order the vodka red bull, he told me it would be a 30 minute wait... for a vodka red bull. I was the only person standing at the bar, with my girlfriend. I told him I just wanted the quick cocktail he said he was busy with tables and I'd have to wait the 30 min for a 2 ingredient drink. This was absurd. Lord knows how much $ was spent to get married here, but if that kind of service is any indication of either their policy of service or this one guy who was maybe having a bad day and took it out on me, I don't know but it sucked. Every wedding I go to is also an opportunity to check out potential venues for myself and this one guy really left a bad impression. Several of us had bought groupons for 2 for 1 deals and our tasting was double the fun. And indeed it was, no prosecco, but delicious Riesling. My pals also were pleased with their full bodied reds and chardonnays. After the tasting we proceeded to the Bistro attached to winery. Lucky for us we were seated in a marvelous and proceeded to dine on deluxe burgers, fresh salads and s margherita pizza that was excellent. All in all...great food, kind and smiling service made for a marvelous party. Need to add....that the mini mule w/ grapefruit and lime juice was to die for...absolutely the perfect ending to a great meal. So when deciding about which winery to visit...give Mount Palomar a try...something for everyone. read more
