We stumbled into this little gem on Sunday. We went up to do some antiquing, but nothing was really open, so we decided to grab some lunch. The menu was full of yummy stuff! I miss the old Mountain Fresh back when it was just a local grocery store that had a sandwich counter. I will happily state that their fries are great and all of their sandwiches are delicious, if and only if you're willing to spend 20 or more minutes in line. While in Highlands last weekend I was thrilled to remember to stop in before 11:30 and it was already packed so I turned around and went to Cyprus. They have pretty much removed all of the groceries from the store. They did decide to put in a nice wine section though but it is difficult to find people to help you. I've been going to Mountain Fresh for over 20 years and am just disappointed that they aren't staffing accordingly so we can enjoy the food and all of the different, new areas, the updated store has to offer. read more

Oh my gosh...what a neat place!!! Where do I start...hmm. This market has it all!! Freshly made pizza section where you order and it is made as you shop. A high end wine section, daily specials for meals to go, a high end coffee bar, a grill section for sandwiches, a salad bar, small selection of groceries, and they even have breakfast each morning. The market has inside and outside seating for their customers to enjoy the delicious food. Wine and beer are also served by the glass for you to enjoy with your lunch or dinner selection. You really could spend hours in Mountain Fresh Market and never get bored. We wre there on July 4th and it was packed!! It was our first time there and was I impressed. Loved everything about it!! I was fooled by the good reviews of this place. This is my first and last time eating here. The grilled chicken sandwich was just a piece of grilled chicken on a bun. The French dip was aweful. It was full of fatty beef. If you bit into it you took all the meat and had to chew up a bunch of fat. Stay away from this menu item if you eat here. You will regret it. Plus the bread was instantly soggy if you dipped it in the au jus. read more

My boyfriend and I came here in fall while exploring the smoky mountains. He was so thrilled to bring me here for lunch, knowing how much I would love it. I could tell when we pulled in to park that I already adored this place. Not only is it a local grocery store but there are different areas/food vendors inside. This is a double win in my eyes. The store was clean, well organized and people were both shopping and eating lunch. Inside, there is a pizza place, a grill, a coffee place and pastries & desserts galore. We opted for the grill area where I ordered a Rueben and he had a burger. I couldn't have asked for a better sandwich. My only regret is that I didn't take any pictures. Beyond disappointing! I've lived in Highlands for 5 years now. Mountain Fresh was a weekly favorite for a long time. Then it started going down hill. We loved the pizzas until they started being burned every time. We switched to Strombolis and as long as we Specifically requested that they Not be burned they were great! Lots of cheese and meats! I could get 2 meals from 1. They also started being not just burnt but had minimal fillings. Fool me once, shame on you, Fool me twice, shame on me! I Know! However, with our limited choices here we decided to give them a try again with their Grill menu. We had previously enjoyed their burgers, hand cut fries and some of their daily specials, especially their Meatloaf! We just tried their Roast beef, both regular sandwich and a French dip. Not edible! Minimal meat as well as barely there cheese. In the picture you can see why my husband asked me "is that a smear of mustard?" To which I had to reply "No Dear, that is the cheddar cheese " Roast beef not only smelled bad but tasted bad! His Au jus for French dip tasted like watered down Worcestershire sauce! Interesting store with an uneven take out. Beginning with soup and salad Boasts 4 soups Black eyed peas counted as a soup? Chili is a soup? The chicken soup looked gummy w noodles and a tomato my soup Salad bar was adequate but lackluster. Salads in take out were globs of mayonnaisey covered unknown substances and then there were the bricks of Mac n Cheese. Not appealing. The good stuff is at the grill. Delicous sandwiches Truly wonderful Boylon soda Yum But it's clear the help is not happy Surly, frowning, snappy. Unhappy. This is a failure of leadership, not the staffs failure. This place is the best. It has a gourmet grocery store AND an excellent deli all in one. We got some products from the store and partook of their excellent pizzas for a quick lunch stop while exploring Highlands. We were not disappointed! The pizza was great and extremely good portion sizes for the cost. We did not wait for too long as other reviewers have expressed, but I could see how such a place as this could become very backed up very easily. What I really loved is that this place hasn't seemed to have given in to the intolerable snootiness that is prevalent at most other Highland establishments. Absolutely disgusting and I'll never go near it again. We went to Highlands in August and we're excited to see This place after we saw it online. We thought it looked like Whole Foods. It was the first place we went, we arrived and were absolutely stunned to look around and wonder why it was so dirty. The floors, tables, bathrooms, counters. Everything is scattered in the wrong place. We ate food because we were hungry but worried if the kitchen was dirty. The owners Steve and Jennifer Snead-Smith and the manager Vince should be embarrassed. It should be clean, even more so during COVID. Everything was filthy!! Came here twice, only had food and coffee. The coffee is on point. Two sizes, pour it yourself, but if you want lattes and cappuccinos, they make those for you. Be sure to grab the coconut macaroons near the counter, they are heavenly and huge. The second time I went I ordered the daily special, which was a green tomato cheese burger. Although the place was busy, I believe they forgot about my order. It took 20 minutes and all my friends behind me already got their food. I had to walk up and ask where my food was. My wife and I stopped in to rest from a small walk with our newborn. We shared a three 3-ounce wine flight ($12), which had some solid options with heavy 5-ounce pours. Nothing rare and spectacular, but enjoyable enough. After, we shared a Neapolitan wood-fire "fig & pig" pizza ($12) and large arugula salad ($6). We ended the meal with an ale on tap ($6). What a fun little grocery store! It has the potential to be pretentious, but somehow it's not. There is more concentrated in this tiny market, than most of our big box groceries in Atlanta. Where to start? - pizza oven, deli sandwiches, dinner entrees, breakfast, wine bar, coffee bar, wine, cheese, gourmet oils & vinegars, bakery, etc. Soon to come, is a self-service food bar - I suspect, because this place was hopping both times we frequented. People are walking around with glasses of wine, eating inside and spilling out into the parking lot...it's the most eclectic, odd, and delightful grocery I've ever been in. I had the Philly steak and a salad and my husband had a Rueben [panini style] with fresh cut fries. The dressings are homemade and delicious. His Rueben was perfect, but the Philly was a little greasy. Our ticket price was about $20, which is what I'd expect to pay for the portion and quality of food. I was most impressed with the fact that themanager came over while we were in line and took our order on his Ipad, so that we only had to pay when we got to the cashier, making the lines and wait shorter. He never stopped moving the entire time we were there - a good indication that if good customer service is modeled from the top, it will carried out throughout the store. The only negative comment that I have is that we tried cupcakes from the bakery and they weren't great. A little dry and the frosting was a bit tasteless and - who says this about frosting - not sweet enough. Maybe that's how their typical clientele like it? The offerings are limited, so while you might stop in for a few items to round out a meal or plan a gourmet picnic, you shouldn't plan a regular shopping trip. read more

Our takeout meal was hugely disappointing. My linguini Bolognese contained almost no sauce--it was basically a whole bunch of pasta with only enough sauce for a few forkfuls of linguini. My husband's margarita pizza was burnt on the top edges and dry as a bone. We also bought a piece of what we thought was homemade cherry pie for dessert. It was terrible. Sickly sweet (I didn't realize it was sweetened with corn syrup, which was my oversight) with a very gelatinous filling. Crust was gummy and tasteless. Won't waste our money there again. read more

I recommend grabbing a sandwich while you are here though. Very busy so you'll wait a bit. You stand in line to place your order, then they bring your food out to you. Picnic are set up outside where you can people watch folks shopping in downtown Highlands. I had the Cuban sandwich and it was fantastic! Lots of other unique sandwich combinations too. Very cute (and popular) grocery / restaurant. We stopped for lunch on a Saturday. Had a burger, Cuban sandwich, hot dog, etc. Good craft beers on tap too. It gets super busy here. We waited in line to order for 20 minutes, then another 20 for the food. If you have little ones, be prepared. Very nice grocery store!!! Came here on thanksgiving morning for a bite to eat after our morning hike. They have so many options and great coffee. This store has a butcher, deli, pizza restaurant and catering. We actually got much of our thanksgiving meal from here. They have rows and rows of wine and olive oil. My husband and I came here for lunch. There are so many choices it is hard to decide what to get. We both had sandwiches and ordered at the counter. The food came quickly and was nice and hot. I probably didn't order what I was really craving. That was my fault. My husband thoroughly enjoyed his po boy. If I was staying in the area in a house I would definitely pick up some ready made meals here. Fast and easy and you get a home cooked meal without doing the cooking.
