We had the following pizzas: Four cheese Fig and Pig White Margherita All three of them had great crust (a bit of char, pretty thin- could've been a bit fluffier/airier though), and had distinct flavors that worked together. I especially liked the Fig n' Pig. For informal dining that doesn't skimp on quality, come here. And grab some beer/wine along the way if you'd like. read more

We eat at this restaurant almost every time we are in highlands. The food is great and the store is wonderful with a great gourmet selection. The last time we were there we ate on the screened in patio. It was so dirty I could hardly stand it. They were busy so I understand but they didn't bother to clean the floors or the tables. We also had the table next to the garbage can where everyone would come by and dump the trays. I really wish they could move that garbage bin so we don't have to see it or smell it. Ventured over to Highlands today and found this gem. With four adults and six hungry kids in tow we headed into this popular lunch spot. Everyone wanted something different. We tried everything- the chicken and waffles, the pizza, the Cuban with homemade chips, the cheeseburger, even the grilled mahi. Everything was amazing and everyone was happy. To go food here is good, sometimes really good. Why the two star rating? Because the employees here almost always seem unhappy, resulting in pretty lackluster service for the amount of money being shelled out. As a veteran of the service industry, I can assure you that a high turnover rate and soul crushed employees is not a good thing. I'm thinking that with the amount of money and vacationers flowing through this town, the store can afford to keep it's employees happy? The best description I have would be a smaller version of Whole Foods, but less groceries. I've been shopping here for over 18 years and throughout this time their evolution is quite diverse. It's no longer a super convenient/cheap grocery store I can shop at. It's become a hopping lunch spot, a wine bar, and a superb bakery. Their Monkey Break, Breakfast Biscuits, and Banana Cream Pie are lovely. The Snickerdoodle Cookie isn't my cup of tea though. The recipe is a bit different than the classic cookie. This place is great for a quick breakfast or afternoon snack. We ordered the special omelet of the day and the two egg breakfast. The food was really good and not too greasy. The staff is very friendly. We also stopped to get some wine and cheese for a snack in the afternoon. They had a great assortment. read more

Kind of a quirky place, very small "grocery" store with parts dedicated to great carry out or eat in menu with specials everyday; onsite bakery; coffee bar; butcher counter; deli case and hot/cold salad bar and pizza parlor. I've been to Mountain Fresh a few times and have been thoroughly impressed every time. Lunch can be a bit pricy but the quantity and quality are both well worth it. The chicken fingers are my favorite (especially since they're actually on the menu now) and though the fries are delicious, I find myself craving the sweet potato tots all the time. read more

This is an awesome little gourmet grocery store with meals to go, a nice wine selection, and really exceptional coffee. Interestingly, although this would be considered a high end boutique in Charlotte, it's prices are lower for things like wine than many standard supermarkets like Harris Teeter, which is nice. This review concerns Sunday morning breakfast only. Very cool spot for a quick and easy breakfast. I had biscuits and gravy as I assumed that since it was on the daily special list that the gravy is going to be that good ole southern red eye gravy, with big fluffy biscuits underneath...I was mistaken. The meal was okay. It just seemed that the gravy was "instant gravy". Those who grew up in southern homes where this was the norm know what i mean....there's a difference. I stayed in Highlands for a few days and quickly found out about the Mountain Fresh Grocery. Its located conveniently at the end of Main St and seems to be a staple in the city. They have a fantastic cafe inside that serves breakfast and lunch. I didn't get to try the lunch, but I did have breakfast there two mornings in a row. The selection is great and the prices are good considering the quality of the food. I tried the apple slice french toast and the two egg breakfast... both of which were very tasty. My girlfriend had the Belgian pecan waffle one day which was also delicious. The coffee here is also pretty good. They have a self serve bar that had a least 3 coffees each day (light, medium, and dark). There's much more inside including a pizza place, burger grill, and large selection of wine and oil. Make sure you check it out if you're ever in Highlands. read more

I have been to Mountain Fresh twice this week for lunch then dinner. I ordered the bbq chicken pizza which normally comes with a bbq sauce instead of red sauce but they used the red sauce so it was not as Tangy as I prefer. Then ordered the chx tender salad with honey mustard dressing. That is my honey mustard dressing ever and it worked perfectly with the salad. Great for families who want options. Bakery had yummy things as well. read more

Ordered the grilled Mahi Mahi with house salad for the second time an it was Same problem like the first time. The fish was BURNED, this is not grilled guys its Charcoal !!! What a disgusting dish seriously not eatable. Cant believe they let me wait 35 minutes( !! ) for such a thing. Another previous visit it was a Philli steak sandwich that was completely not chewable and i had to spit 3/4 of it to the plate. Bottom line very bad food that takes forever to receive so I won't go back probably ever. read more

This place was packed last week for lunch! Great variety and selection - from hot sandwiches to deli to coffee. It's also a small grocery for necessities. Chicken salad was amazing - had small pieces of apples in it - also available without apples - either way one of the best chicken salads I have ever had. It has recently sold and I have not been in since. It is kind of a tourist trap. Nothing special about it, especially if you like to wait 45 minutes for your food. They have tried to so so much. I hear the wine selection is good. read more

We use to love this place, great food, fresh baked goods and friendly staff, but things have changed. I noticed that kitchen staff and others who enter the kitchen area don't have hair nets or caps on, this is wrong! Tonight we went in for our usual chicken tender salad and much to our surprise it's price went from $11 to $15 for a much smaller portion. Sadly, we won't be getting meals there anymore. read more

Can always rely on MF to provide a good burger. Food choices are very limited in this area and it's very difficult to find decent food at a reasonable price. I wish they had Dr. Pepper, but I guess it's an encouragement to drink more water instead. Fries are good and you get a big portion. We've always encountered friendly waitstaff when we go. I don't care for their "hot foods" bar, however. We will try the pizza joint inside next time. read more

NO MASKS IN THE GRILL/BREAKFAST KITCHEN THIS MORNING on any of the three cooks!!! The woman taking orders and payment had on a mask. The two people in the opposite side of the store bakery/pizza area had on masks. The man who plated my pecan waffle had on gloves with which he also wiped his nose and another wiped his mouth with his gloves. These two men and one woman had on bandanas pulled fully down below their chins! We ordered here and ate outside two days ago and all were masked and we typically love this place for the best food and service. BUT NOT TODAY! THESE THREE PEOPLE NEED TO BE OUT OF THE KITCHEN AND COVID TESTED, THEN RETRAINED HOW TO FUNCTION DURING COVID. If they can't wear and keep on masks in the kitchen or not wipe their noses and mouths even with gloved hands they should not work here! We had already ordered to go when we noticed this, almost asked for our money back, but took our food home to microwave to kill possible COVID germs, then had to oven-crisp the waffles. HIGHLY DISAPPOINTED TODAY IN MOUNTAIN FRESH GROCERY in Highlands. Won't be back unless this is thoroughly corrected! THE FOOD IS WONDERFUL (!!!) BUT NOT COVID-SAFE. read more

Went in tonight for some takeaway dinner. I ordered a chicken sandwich, fries and the side salad. The chicken breast was very small, fries were cold, and this is the third time I've taken a sandwich home that is POORLY wrapped! When I take it out of the bag, everything falls apart. I suggest you use more wrap, and tape it shut!!! Will take my takeout business elsewhere. I suggest you spend some time on quality control. For $15, I can go down the street and get a top shelf sandwich and fresh fries or tots for less money. Make it fresh!! read more

We just got into town and needed some basic things for the cabin we rented. This is not the place to go for that. Very limited selection, the veggies and fruits looked horrible. We walked out with $80 of groceries for $150. The woman at the check out wasn't very friendly and seemed frustrated. There was a long line at their deli so maybe that is the draw. Did we just hit a bad morning? Walked over for breakfast on a Sunday, and 11 minutes after they opened, the line to order was wrapped around the back of the place. The woman running the register was clearly overwhelmed (and a little snippy), and put us on hold ordering because she "just heard" they were out of corned beef. Then she had to go track down the guy she'd sold corned beef to to refund him.... so we waited and waited. Sigh. I got the two egg breakfast with coffee, and the fella got the egg biscuit. My bacon was so burnt that it sounded like I was eating potato chips when I crunched down on it. Same with the very flavorless hash browns. The eggs and toast were fine, but it's not too hard to scramble some eggs and throw some bread in the toaster. The fella's egg biscuit was tiny (to be fair, it was only $4.50), and the sausage patty looked like a sad hockey puck. The cheese was neon, and when I said, "It looks like they just threw a slice of Kraft on your biscuit," he said, "I think that's exactly what happened." Even my coffee was fairly undrinkable. read more

Mountain Fresh used to be my "go to" place n Highlands. It has a deli, soup and salad bar, wine and coffee bars, pizza and Italian bar, and a good bakery- something for everyone. It's also a gourmet grocery store. However it recently changed owners, and the food has declined dramatically, unfortunately. I had a Reuben the other day and it was literally inedible and I can eat almost anything. The fried chicken strips aren't nearly as good either. The new owners need to do a better job of cleaning the restaurant as well, including the bathrooms. Hopefully they'll be able to iron out the kinks, and the restaurant will be even better in the future. read more

I believe this place has new ownership as of a couple of years ago....I do know that it has improved gangbusters since i last visited in 2010....great selection of organic wines....an olive oil bar (crazy fun)....a balsamic vinegar bar...plus, super nice people....and an inexpensive way to eat in an expensive town. read more
