I've driven by this place a hundred times and can't believe I've never been. I stopped in today and was pleasantly surprised to see on the menu that you could buy an extra piece of chicken for $1.87. I got the two-piece dark meat and added an extra chicken thigh. I decided to choose macaroni and cheese and pinto beans as my sides. The macaroni and cheese had some kind of tomato sauce mixed in that just made it that much better. The chicken was perfectly seasoned and cooked and very juicy and the pinto beans were great. This is not the very best fried chicken in the Winston area (for that I would suggest Clemmons Kitchen), but it is solid, and is not the least bit expensive. My 2 piece dark meat with 2 sides and a small dinner roll came to $6.14 - that's a definite value meal at a time when many fast food chains are introducing "meal deals". As I said this was solid chicken - well breaded, nicely fried, moist and tender. The pintos were good, well seasoned, while the mashed potatoes and gravy were just ok. Once a staple of fried chicken in Winston Salem. It is no longer the restaurant that it once was. When I visited this restaurant with my friends, I was honestly shocked at the condition of the restaurant. There were napkins scattered all throughout the floor, tables were overturned, seats were knocked over, and there were random puddles of liquid all over. Even though the conditions were this poor, I decided to order chicken because I heard that this restaurant was once extremely popular. However, I soon learned that this was the wrong decision. The chicken was extremely dry, and the sides were extremely salty. This was not representative of southern fried chicken whatsoever. It was a complete letdown. Additionally, I was not confident that the food was not contaminated because of the poor sanitary conditions. I cannot recommend this restaurant. read more

My friend and I came to Mountain Fired on a fluke and man was it a good one. This is my first time eating at the Akron Drive location and it is now my favorite. We were there on a Sunday evening closer to the end of the night but the food was still fresh. Their portions are very generous and filling. Try the Mac-n-cheese that is nothing like any you've seen before. All of their boneless chicken is fresh made to order so if you want tenders or boneless wings it will take a few extra minutes. The staff gave us a few extras for the road since it was closing time and that team had the best attitude. It is located in an old Hardee's restaurant that could use some updates but it was clean and secure. Very family friendly read more

I love Mountain Fried Chicken . I'll eat their chicken before I eat anyone else's but I was so disappointed and disgusted last weekend. My husband went to Akron Drive, which is my favorite spot and when he bought that chicken in when I opened the 15 Piece Moose the chicken was dark. It didn't even taste like mountain fries recipe. It was highly seasoned with too much salt. Two pieces is all I could tolerate to eat because it wasn't their original recipe. He ended up taking it and giving it to homeless people versus throwing it out I did send them an email. I have not gotten a response, but I now have to look at them differently 20 years.+ I've been eating from Mountain Fried and I Travel from Stratford Rd area over to that restaurant. I did notice that the University Rural Hall Restaurant vegetables are more like home-cooked and not just dumped out of a can. They used to have a manager African-American young man that had hazel color eyes and whenever he was on, I knew I would be getting some good chicken. He left there and was at Popeyes the new one on Stratford Road, but I don't care for Popeyes chicken they always have issues with their menu and get your order wrong!!! so I hope someone from the Mountain Fried chicken business sees this and makes improvement because I know I'm not the only one and you just can't serve people anything because they come through the drive-through and pay their money and go about their business. They are deep fried with a very light breading. They are served with potato wedges which are my favorite side! Now you can get regular pieces of chicken and a variety of sides to choose from like, greens, green beans, mashed potatoes, baked beans, peach cobbler, and others! The "Moose" is the 15 wings with 8 wedges and will run you about $10. You can go smaller by getting the "Winston" which is 10 wings with 6 wedges for around $8. Fried chicken is some good stuff. Like others have said its not quite award winning, but considering all things, this is still a very good option for fried chicken. Its solid. Ttheir slogan.. its not greasy. Not overly greasy. Last batch I got from here was piping hot, crispy, good and juicy inside with a nice taste. There is not too much breading on their chicken either, which is a good thing. Good seasoning, without being too much. As sides I get the potato salad, corn, and mac n cheese. All are very good, the mac n cheese has some tomato sauce in it which adds a nice element. The corn is down right awesome, reminds me of home, fresh seasoned country taste. The potato salad is solid. It doesn't look like much from outside (well, it actually looks just like an old Burger King or Hardee's), but inside is some very, very good chicken. It's not out of this world or anything, so don't keep your expectations too high - it's just very solid, crispy chicken that's not overly salty. Kinda tastes like "homemade" or something someone would bring to a picnic, if that makes any sense. And like the catchphrase says, it's not greasy! (I mean, of course it's going to be greasy, but it's not TOO greasy). Also: the potato wedges are really, really good. Do not eat here. I went to this location on Akron Dr and as soon as I pulled up the girl ask for my order with an attitude rushing me quickly. After I stated my order she waits and then says well I can't hear you. I repeated my order louder for her to here and apparently she didn't like that. When I got to the window she tried to give me free food like I was gonna eat it.
