First off, it was pleasant to walk into a store, and be greeted by an employee that truly loves his job and the products they sell. It was also great that the employee didn't try to shove the most expensive item into a sale, but rather listened to what was needed. The product was so quality, that we didn't mind the prices, being there was only a minimal difference between their store, and your cheap box store prices. I was in need of some last minute backpacking items and the staff was top notch. Greeted me as soon as I stepped inside. It was so refreshing to have that kind of customer service. This place was highly recommended by a couple girls on the BCSO SARS K9 Team. I went by there to get a pack for my training. They were beyond helpful and knowledgeable. I was measured for the proper fit, shown all the amenities the pack had, and also show a few other things that I was going to need for my training. These guys are extremely friendly and helpful. I went in asking to buy a stabilizing strap for my messenger bag, hoping to keep it under ten bucks. They actually MADE me one for about 2.50. Of course I went back to them to buy a Klean Kanteen as a Khristmas present. About a week and a half ago I went in to buy a base layer and got not only the same friendly help that I've come to love about this place, but the guy who made my strap recognized it, asked me how it was, and we discussed and implemented improvements. The fact that they were willing to spend a grand total of about 25 minutes with me for what amounted to less than five dollars in purchases speaks volumes. I would almost consider taking up hiking just to have reason to buy from that business. read more

My best place in chico when I rent outdoor gear for a grear last minute trips and its very very affordable. The great friendly staff for the last 6+ years, has been very help in informing about the local wildlife and outdoor. They have by far best outdoor gear, knowledge, and customer service. This store needs some major training in the customer service department. No one greets you when you walk in, or asks you if they can assist with anything. They would rather talk amongst each other than help out a potential customer. When I approached a young woman this evening to ask about sizing, I was responded with a slight attitude and a condescending attitude. I'm a petite woman who wears mostly XS, but every time I come in this store I only see size S and up, so I can never try anything on. I asked her if they ever order XS under a couple of name brands like Patagonia and Toad & Co., and she basically looked at me as if I was ridiculous for asking such a question, as they are a small business and can only keep so much inventory, so they only order 1 XS for a few brands. Um, yeah, I can clearly see this is a small, local store. Yup, I get it girl. But, this kind of response is unhelpful and shows lack of effort on your part. And maybe, just maybe, ordering a few more XS won't cause your stock to overflow. Oh, but I can order something in XS if I let you know. Sure, that's fine and all, but I want to be able to try something on when I walk in. I told her I can easily order the same clothing online, and she basically shrugged her shoulders like, "too bad, that's the best we can do." I asked to speak to a manager, but she said she would just pass the info. along. Sorry, not good enough. I also work for a small, local business, and we pride ourselves in our customer service, warmth and friendliness. This young lady is rude and needs a major attitude adjustment. I won't be returning again, which is unfortunate, considering we have such limited options here in Chico for mountain gear, but I'd rather drive to Sacramento, or order online than be treated so poorly. read more

I like to shop local and have actually purchased some big ticket items just to stay local from them. One older guy is excellent, but the other staff lacks customer service and the experience a friend had there prompts me to write this. I sent her to them to rent a back pack. A week before, she is beautifully fitted by the older exp. guy there and told to ask for that pack. She picks up the pack, it is totally different. We are out packpacking, and she experiences much pain. I let her try on my Deuter, it fits her like a glove. Others in the group are hardcore who with years and 1000's mles experience can not fit the pack to her, and it is a MAN's pack. DUH! We all tried it on and yes a Man's pack and awful. When she returned the pack, she received ZERO POINT ZERO customer service. Here is a quote from her: Well, their response was "that's too bad, you'll have to try a different one next time." They didn't seem to know which one they originally fitted me with either. I won't be interested in renting from them again let alone purchasing You know what MT Sports? you lost me as customer, her as a customer and many others! Never again! Hello mail order! read more

My favorite local shop! 80% of my backpacking, climbing and mountaineering gear was purchased here not just because they're local, but because they've always been there for me when researching a product left me wanting more. Don't let the small square footage fool you. They've got a ton of stuff packed neatly away in there. I really miss Jake and no one will ever be able to fill his boots, but the rest of the staff have plenty of experience in outdoor sports and always offer great advice with a smile. read more
