This place was a perfect spot after a day on the slopes and I would give it 5 starts....but I got pretty sick afterwards and am a little suspicious that the arugula on my pizza might have been to blame... STILL THOUGH I'm giving three stars because the restaurant was cool, the servers and staff were all so incredibly nice, and the food was really good! I'm happy to chalk up my little E.Coli-esque mishap to a rare instance. The place was huge - lots of space even for a big party in the bar area. Our server instantly made us feel at home, and let us taste any beers we wanted to before ordering for sure. Also, they infuse their own ginger vodka for a very good (and very strong) moscow mule! Give it a try for sure if you're not a beer person. The menu is dominated by the pizza, but that's understandable. They have a huge wood-fire oven and they crank out their melty, yet crunchy, pizzas like nobody's business. The pizza selection is huge - we went with the beetza (get it?) which was a great way to eat a salad on top of the pizza crust, and the classic. I've always loved coming to this place but I came in tonight and asked for a simple bbq chicken pizza...I specifically asked for bbq sauce, chicken, and mozzarella cheese...I get home and they put blue cheese on it...who the hell puts blue cheese on a bbq chicken pizza ...I despise blue cheese and my night has been ruined because I look forward to this every time I come to Deep Creek...Sadly the bartender was more concerned with his buddies that were sitting at the bar than getting my order correct . read more

My friends and I came to this restaurant on a Saturday around 6:45. There were 11 of us, as we were in town for a Bachelorette Party. The restaurant doesn't take reservations, so we decided to wait even when they told us that our wait would be an hour and a half long. We waited for about two hours, and we still hadn't been seated. We finally talked to a manager who also needed to talk to another manager when we asked about discounting our meals for the long wait. We never got seated; rather, we ended up getting some flat breads to go. We waited for two hours and a half to get some flat breads to go. They only gave us 50% off. Pros- ambiance, good sangria Cons- not a well rounded restaurant. I am gluten free and literally could hardly have anything here. Now that isn't their fault however I feel like if you only want to do a good pizza and beer, which is what I feel like they do well probably- then just do that. I got the nachos and salad. Both were not even edible. Nachos were just cheap tortilla chips thrown on a plate w queso, canned tomatoes and jalapeños and some beans. The blue ridge salad was ice berg lettuce with a small amount of walnuts and craisins. The house dressing had so much vinegar it made my mouth burn for an hour after. Our Family Vacations here almost every year and this is without a doubt the worst place to eat but the best place for the young kids to play outside so ergo the dilemma. Last Night was no exception to past experiences. Large party of 14. They were out of half of their beers. The appetizers were spinach and artichokes (good), baked potato flat bread (ok), Nachos (so so because half of the pile was just chips so limited amounts of the toppings). The Service was way below par. Saw our waitress 3 times in almost 1.7 hours. My sister did all of the clearing, serving, and still left an excessive tip. Northern people are like that IMHO. Stay away from the Flatbreads. My Nephew ordered the Cuban and it was literally a pizza crust with Kraft BBQ sauce, 2 ounces of pulled pork, 6 strips of green pepper, and mozzarella cheese. Awful. We ended up bringing half of it home and no one out of 14 people wants to touch it. Getting ready to check out so throwing it out since it is to sweet for the ducks. The Hawaiian Pizza was exactly what you'd expect so lots of pineapple chunks from a can of Doles and very little ham. The Cubanize Sandwich left two people shocked from the excessive garlic so be prepared. Presentation was good throughout the meal since my sister took charge to 'help out' the waitress. The Chicken Caesars Salad was exactly that. So So... Overall I will never go back. $200 tab for 7 adults and 7 kids and about 8 beers plus chow. The best pizza I have ever had was Papa Johns 'The Works' Thin Crust and for half the price I would have gotten something that doesn't even compare. The atmosphere was somewhat rural and the view of the 400,000 volt power lines priceless. What I really wanted was a fresh Chef's Salad. They don't have one. How about a fully loaded pizza? Don't have one. Splenda? Forget about it. Great Service at a fair price? Forget about it. This is a place probably more appealing to the Locals than Tourist that come back year after year. While up with friends in the Deep Creek area, we had decided on checking out Mountain State Brewing Co. for dinner. We had earlier purchased the IPA within the form of the bottles and were quite happy with the quality. So, the actual brewing restaurant and bar could only get better...right? Unfortunately...wrong. I ordered the stout for myself and my friends ordered a pitcher of the IPA for themselves. These were the only and last beers we ordered while at dinner. Both the IPA and the stout were flat and watery. As hard as it would seem to me, conceptually, for a brewing company to be worse than bud, coors or miller lite. And, even calling out the fact that they don't serve those beers, I would have rather had a coors than to have drank what I drank with dinner. For dinner I had the Apple Butter Pulled Chicken Sandwich. The best part of this sandwich was the brioche bun. The chicken was dry and the bbq sauce was something that would have been better suited for ice cream, it was so sweet. Supposedly the pizza was 'relatively' good that my friends had, which is the only reason this review is 2 stars instead of 1. I'd suggest cooking for yourself and buying some beer at one of the local booze stores instead of making the effort to drive to Mountain State Brewing Co. read more

Visited this brewery as a result of reviews on here. We WERE NOT disappointed. The night we went was a fund raising event for a local dog rescue so there were a lot of dogs welcome on the outside patio. My parents loved it because they had drove over from Michigan and saw that as an opportunity to bring their cockapoo to dinner with us. It was a great event... Anyway... The Beer: We had the IPA and really like it. Well, we liked it so much we went with a growler to take back to the house we rented!!! The pizzas: We had a pretty good variety on our table. I would like to pick a favorite, but will say that we ordered 5 different ones and they were all very good. Only thing I would like to see is maybe a good balsamic to drizzle over a couple of the selections we had... The service was a tad slow for as busy as they were. Not sure if that is the norm, but we did have to ask for help getting more beer or additional food a couple of times (if it were only once I would not mention it). Great place to hang out if you're in the area. Fun, casual, log cabin vibe with delicious beer (try the seneca IPA) and yummy flatbreads. For flatbreads I've had the mushroom, yard sale, and reuben toppings. All were great and flavors I'd recommend. The crust is very thin (love), and you could really taste the flames! I wouldn't say the toppings are super fresh, but the the combos are well-chosen and in some cases unique. About 2 weeks ago we waited close to an hour for a table. Ordered 2 pizzas and 2 sandwiches and we waited over an hour for the pizzas to get our table. When the pizzas came, we asked about the sandwiches and waitress looked puzzled. We never received plates and silverware. We had to ask for those so we could eat. They literally put the pizzas on the table and walked away with no plates or silverware. About 10 minutes later the sandwiches came. I did have the Almost Heaven Amber Ale. We loved Mountain State Brewing Company! Always visit when we are in Deep Creek for a family reunion each summer. Our last 2 visits were super pleasant. My friend and I went after an afternoon of hiking. I got the sangria and she had the Hillbilly Punch. I personally liked her drink better than mine, but the sangria was still pretty tasty. About 2 days later on our way out of town, my family joined us as well for lunch. We all got pizzas to share and each one was totally baked perfectly and was super tasty. We also got a pitcher of the Hillbilly Punch and the server even gave us the recipe! The view is incredible and I wish I could get there for a visit more than once each summer. read more

After a day spent racing down the Mountain Rollercoaster and splashing in Deep Creek Lake, this is the most relaxing, wonderful place to chill on the patio enjoying a cool breeze and a nice cool brew. Ahhhhhh. First off, the brews. The hubby was very happy with the selections he sampled...I'm not a beer drinker. I am someone who enjoys a good Bloody Mary! And I certainly enjoyed a good one here. Made with house-infused chipotle vodka, no less. They had a few types of infused vodkas that evening and I tried another chill libation that used ginger-infused vodka, gingerale, mint leaves and apple juice. Refreshing! The other thing they do in-house is rootbeer and it was maybe the best of the drinks we tried. Mmmm-mmmmmm. The hubby ordered a sausage flatbread and my grandson ordered the Mushroom Medley that consisted of portobello mushrooms, fresh mozzarella, garlic and olive oil. He claimed it the best pizza he'd ever eaten! He's 10, but a connoisseur of mushroom pizzas already. My daughter and I both ordered naked burritos - her version was an unusual curry and mine was the traditional Mexican version with a good pulled beef. Both were huge, filling and delicious. As good as the food is, the service was less than stellar on our visit - definitely needs BIG improvement. The slow service - and items forgotten - at least were tempered by the beautiful view of the sunset and the surroundings fields and hills. The inside has a Florida Keys vibe. We were traveling with 4 adults and 4 pre-teen boys. We sat near the window over looking the mountain. The restaurant was loud even though it was pretty empty. This was great seeing we were traveling with kids. My husband ordered the Ruben which he loved. My friends ordered the pesto gluten free pizza which they raves about. I ordered the fire fly something. It has olive oil, spinach, artichokes, goat cheese, and red onions. I added chicken breast. It looked amazing but the center was soggy. The sandwich alone could have been enough for 2 meals for a normal person (I am not normal, though). Beers were good. I think they have 4 of their own, and 2 guest taps. I tried a guest tap - $5 for a DB IPA. By DC standards, that's a steal. I suggest going on the early side - the service is very, very slow. We got there at 5.20 pm, and left around 8. Pretty decent craft beer...informal and relaxed ambiance and decor. Food is quite good and reasonably priced....overall a good value. Certainly one of the better choices in an area that has a remarkable commitment to mediocrity. Staff is delightful and friendly, not a given in this area where it seems many service providers are contemplating surgery without anesthesia given their demeanor and effort. The many times I have been here, I have not suffered slow service, but I can see some servers are perhaps a bit more tip motivated than others :) Occasionally have live entertainment....very dog friendly as well ! read more

Best food we had in Deep Creek. Never having been to the area before, we weren't sure what to expect. Touristy food and prices to match, I guess. Well, Mountain State totally fixed our wagon, as my grandma would say. We had some local brews (my fav: Miner's Daughter Oatmeal Stout) and ordered up some flatbreads- the FireFly (special) and Fire on the Mountain. Wonderful. The Firefly used local chèvre, artichokes, spinach, and I dunno what else, but it was buttery perfection. Fire on the Mountain was spicy and sweet and meaty and tomatoey and- just awesome. Seriously, these flat pizzas totally rocked the house. We didn't have problems with service, even though our visit was last night after the Gran Fondo. While it was hoppin' in there, we had a great experience. If you are visiting DCL, go there. You won't regret it. read more

I have been here many times and have recommended it to friends who have thanked me for sending them. In short, they make great pizza in wood fired ovens for a reasonable price. They infuse their own vodka and the wine list is creative. Need I say more? Well... I will. I LOVE the s'mores pizza for dessert - nutella, marshmallow cream on a crust sprinkled with graham cracker crumbs - YUMMERS! One afternoon, I sat here with a friend for several hours. We were enroute to Frederick, MD for dinner at Volt. Our plan was to find a coffee shop there and play a game (we love strategy games!) until our friends arrived. When we realized Mountain State has board games in house, we brought ours in, ordered some wine and played for a few hours until we needed to move on. The staff was happy to have us and adequately attentive. We never felt rushed or pressured to order more or move on. This is also a great place for families. It's low key and casual. I tried the light beer and the amber and both were very good. They also have a substantial list of other beers as well. The food is yummy but not quite worthy of 5 stars. This place is not where you go for a coors light or miller...craft brews only which is fine for me! I went to this establishment on Saturday, Oct. 12, 2019, and it was a terrible experience. We arrived at around 3 p.m. as a party of six, put our name in, and were told it would be a short wait, so we went to the bar and ordered six beers. I ordered the brewery's IPA, Seneca. I had texted a beer aficionado friend to ask him if he'd been to this place, and he said, yes, but "the beer is not overwhelming." This was true. The Seneca was pretty blah for an IPA. Next, we were seated in a booth, and it was a little cramped for six people. Fine, it was somewhat crowded that day, being a nice fall Saturday with the Autumn Glory festival going on in the Deep Creek Lake area. Our waitress brought us waters and then came back a few minutes for our order. We ordered two large pizzas to split among the six people, and then we waited. And waited. And waited. And waited. After 45 minutes, we noticed that one of the tables near us that had been seated after us had gotten its pizza, while we remained without pizza. Our waitress was noticeably absent for most of this time. Finally, one of our party had to get up, got to the bar area, and ask, "What the heck happened to our pizza?" We were told that "the order had just gone in, and it would be another 10 to 15 minutes." At that point, we'd had enough and decided that this place would not be getting any more of our business that day. The waitress was informed to cancel the order. Then another employee came to our table and said our drinks were taken care of, and we could leave when we wished. The majority of "our drinks" had been paid for at the bar, so only two more beers had been ordered in the meantime. So we got two free drinks for a 50-minute wait! Nice job, Mountain State Brewing Co.! YOU GUYS ROCK! No manager came out? No explanation? No voucher for two pizzas for another time? Nothing to say, "We apologize for our atrocious service and here's an incentive to come back another time?" This was unacceptable service, truly pathetic. I'd say, for starters, that Mountain State Brewing Co. needs to shore up its service. As for its pizza, I don't know ... because WE NEVER GOT ANY! read more

Went to Mountain State this evening for dinner. Before going we check the website and see they close at 10. We got there around 8:30 and are greeted at the door by Kayla. We tell her we have a group of 14 and she returns a blank stare as if we've just told her we had 100 people. Once seated she snarks "the kitchen is closing soon so you need to order quickly". We contemplated leaving because she made our entire group feel like she didn't want our business and that we were a bother to her. Once our server (Deborah) came to the table the entire experience changed for us and she made us feel totally welcomed and was a great server. They simply make fantastic pizzas, and their craft beers aren't too shabby either. We actually went twice during our stay. The outside seating was a draw, for sure, so the rug monkeys could tear around the grass and we could drink beer. That's a combo any parent can love. So we tried various pizzas while there; the Fire on the Mountain and the Moriarty's Yardsale stood out. I tried the Mushroom Pizza, the Fire on the Mountain Pizza, the Yard Sale Pizza, the Pesto and Prosciutto Pizza, and the Greek Pizza. The final two being my favorite. IPA is decent. This place was just okay. The beer was very tasty..and we sat outside so it was a truly incredible view. There was a lot of selections on the menu and a lot of things sounded good. I got some kind of wrap and it was just okay..the chicken was very dry. I tried a bit of everyones...The Thai wrap was pretty good...The burritos were almost all beans and breading. This place is very open to the outdoors, so it makes sense that creatures get in every once in a while. But my friend saw a mouse in the main dining room.
