Our server was extremely nice and even included a free birthday shot for me, which was such a thoughtful touch and definitely went above and beyond. The food and service were good. I cannot complain. Our waitress did an excellent job, but our experience was only bad because it was INCREDIBLY hot in the restaurant. Mind you, we are in a heat wave, but it was unbearable and quite frankly, I actually felt for the staff. Great hangout for food and to watch sports in Deep Creek. My group of 12 friends arrived and the food service was as expected for a group that large. The drinks service was very slow, however, and the restaurant wasn't very busy. The food itself was a good quality and the menu had an ample selection for everyone, including kids. None of the ketchup bottles on the tables were filled, so that was one criticism. The restaurant was filled with groups of friends, couples, individuals at the bar, and families, so I think it's safe to say that it's welcoming for everyone. The ambiance was excellent (big patio with nice views, an area with corn hole, etc), and the staff were friendly, but ultimately two stars because of extremely slow service, lack of communication/apology for slow service, and several dishes with long hair in the food (both in the salad and strung up into several hot wings, so as you pulled the hair it tore into smaller strands). We sent back the dishes and were comped them but a manager didn't come to apologize. Is it so routine of a thing that there was no shock from staff that there was hair and no manager who came by to assure us that this is not a typical diner experience? My $13 chicken sliders were a mess--dry dry chicken and stale bread. I ate two bites and pushed away the rest. The Bear is what it is. As part time locals we've come to love it warts and all. Yes the service can be sketchy and the kitchen may be closed on a random Sunday BUT the live music kicks @ss, the beer is usually cold and the $6 burgers on Thirsday night more then makes up for the horrendous karaoke you will have to endure after 7pm. Nice sports bar, and nice servers, but food took nearly an hour, and was utterly forgettable. Chicken was burned and flavorless, and fries lacked any salt or spice. The crab cake sandwich was absolutely puzzling. It had the appearance of a tuna fish sandwich (definitely seemed to have mayo, which should never come anywhere near a crab cake) and only fleeting hints of crab meat. I can't comment on dinners or entertainment. We came here on opening Sunday of football season expressly to watch Eagles & Steelers football games. This seems to be the ONLY bar on the lake with NFL Sunday ticket. We called 3 others. They have a lot of TV's, so lots of different games can be shown. But, their bar TV's are small, and old & some so blurry they were hard to even see. They have 2 projection screens too, but the picture on the Steelers game was next to impossible to see it was so bright & light. Anyway, ya take what ya can get when you're not Ravens fans lol. My husband had a salad that was ok, not great. He doesn't drink only had iced tea. I had a couple Oktoberfest beers on tap that were cold & fresh. Servers & bartenders were busy, but friendly enough. They do have an outdoor patio with a stage for music. We'd probably only return for football games, as food-wise we have other preferable spots on the lake. As a restaurant this was one of the worst experiences. I don't think anyone in our group got their order without any mistakes. We considered leaving when none of the food came out after about an hour (not even the soups or appetizers) but then when it did come most of it was wrong, cold, or overdone. Burgers ordered rare came out well done. I ordered a cheeseburger, which came out cold with no cheese. People didn't get the sides or sauces they asked for. Soup came out room temperature. Crab cake was burned on the bottom. Nachos were just Tostitos from a bag and toppings we asked to be removed or added weren't correct. Asked for to-go boxes at the end which we never got. Between waiting to be seated, waiting for the food and waiting for checks; we were there almost 3 hours. When Handyside owned this place, it was clean, in the last couple years this place has declined in cleanliness!

Terrible service! We sat at a table and were ignored by several servers for 10-15 minutes. At that point we went to the bar for drinks. The bar was rather prompt in getting our first round of drink. When we attempted to get a second round of drinks we were once again ignored by the bartenders. No server ever said anything to our group. The only person to ever speak or acknowledge us we the host and the bartenders. I am also concerned about the cleanliness of this place. As they would clean tables they consistently placed the table caddy's on the floor. At one point I picked one up and placed it on a spare chair in the corner only to have a server place it back on the floor. Save your time and go somewhere else. read more

Found this beast of a lobster roll and had to have a crab cake on the side. More cali style lobster salad but still very good without being heavy. Big on taste and lots of meat. A very touristy (Black bear) but nice casual eatery in McHenry on Deep Creek Lake. The outside patio area is perfect to buy lunch or come to happy hour and enjoy the good weather! There is in door seating for those who prefer or weather not cooperating. We came for Monday night 50 cent wings that you can order in 6 amt. in many different flavors; I ordered garlic Parmesan and Asian zing. The preferred the garlic Parmesan- very tasty; the other was too sweet, it had brown sugar caked on them. Of course they have all the other bar foods available as well a fancy gourmet drinks and beers. I tried the Natural light strawberry lemonade beer which I found quite refreshing. Not sure if they even sell it in Florida but I'll buy some here! Very nice environment and competent staff and worth trying. read more

Our server was fantastic, the food coming out of the kitchen was amazing....however, the hostess seating folks was downright rude (short girl w/glasses), plus, we were right by the door that went out on the patio, so there was a constant slamming of the screen door next to our table....they may want to think about table placement in the summer months. Main dishes yet to be judged. Probably won't come back here. dinner finally came after 1 1/2 hours. Rice bowl around $14 came and had literally 1 pea in it, and 2 bits of carrot in it and about not quite a cup of rice. Disappoint around the table on all other entrees. Advise... don't go here if your hungry and in a hurry. Now that I've read previous reviews, the response I got doesn't explain the poor service and slowness.
