We celebrated a milestone birthday on the tour and had a wonderful time with our guide. We were part of a small tour and there were only five of us. The van was clean and comfortable. They provided water and while we were driving, our tour guide provided rich history of the valley and the land. We visited three excellent wineries and had different experiences at each of them. The first was a traditional and one of the oldest wineries, then we went to another winery that served white Pinot Noir, which was amazing, and we went to another modern winery with a really rich history as well, and it was by far the sleekest winery we visited. I love that they curated the tour to highlight different practices in organic and biodynamic farming. We learned a lot during our time together. We also had opportunities to venture off on our own, which served us well because we didn't want to feel forced to engage with people we were never going to see again. I highly recommend this tour company, especially if you want to learn about the terroir of the Willamette Valley. We also highly recommend visiting their beautiful and well stocked tasting room in Portland! read more

My wife and I thoroughly enjoyed our all-day joinable tour with Backcountry Wine Tours. There was just one other couple in our van, so the tour felt relaxed and intimate. (This is their typical tour size.) The very detailed pre-trip questionnaire we had completed ensured we would visit just the right boutique wineries for our interests. (Our favorite was Arlyn, but each offered a very different experience.) Our guide, Aron, who has worked in the wine industry, was very knowledgeable and shared lots of good information--including about unrelated topics like places to eat in Portland. He also picked up lunch for us at The Horse Radish in Carlton, so we could eat at one of the wineries and not waste time driving. Okay, since this is my 3rd amazing experience with Jack and Backcountry, it's about time to write a review! I'm a local, and don't get to wine country enough. When I do I wonder why I don't go more often. Yesterday only reiterated that! From start to finish, Jack took care of everything. It was a perfect day, with out of towners in our group (Texas and Minnesota) that were equally adventurous as me. I like how after you register online (super easy), you get a brief online questionnaire gathering info about your preferences for your tour. We were open to private tastings and planned on getting a few bottles at each stop. As it turns out, Jack found an opening for a Provisions Tasting (with lunch) at Soter, which was how we started our day. So awesome. Strolled through their garden and heard about Mineral Springs Ranch. Not cheap, but a great deal for what you get! We then stopped in at Flaneur and enjoyed hearing about a newish winery and what even a flaneur was! Finished up with a cozy tasting at North Valley. What a perfect day! We were staying at Silver Falls State Park so arranged to meet in Wilsonville. Nico picked us up promptly in a clean, comfortable van. Since no one else booked our joinable tour, we got a private tour. Nico provided a background on the Willamette Valley, its growing regions, wines, etc. on the way to our first vineyard. At first, I thought "Only three?" but as the day unfolded three were perfect. I love visiting smaller vineyards, talking with them about their wines, and enjoying the views. Having only three to visit made the day unhurried, and we were able to enjoy the wines and conversation. At two of the three, they pulled out additional wines or bubbles for us to taste and enjoy. I can't recommend Backcountry Wine Tours and Nico highly enough. When we're back, we'll be going out with them again. read more

A wine tour is a must when in Oregon. We booked a tour with this company and it was a breeze. We filled out a questionnaire after booking and Jack planned it all. If it's within the area, they will pick you up and drop you off at your hotel. We were with another couple on our tour and luckily we all got along. Our guide, Drew, was extremely knowledgable about the industry too. We ended up visiting 3 wineries plus a distillery (this was unplanned but we fit it in since we finished our first tasting early and it was close). We visited Trisaetum Winery, Killdeer Distilling, Arlyn (the tour company provided a charcuterie lunch here) and Benza Vineyards (my personal favorite). We really enjoyed all of the visits. We purchased a few bottles of wine while on the tour and can't wait for Backcountry to ship these to us. I'm a Portland native and wine snob, so wasn't looking for anything ordinary or too "touristy" - I planned a private tour for a group of 10 moms and Backcountry did NOT DISAPPOINT! They took us to 3 "secret" wineries that are not open to the public, we had at least 6-7 wines per tasting, the settings were all magical and unique, and the vintners took so much time to talk to us and teach us about all of the wines, their process, and their journey. On a father-daughter trip through the PNW, we were lucky enough to find Backcountry Wine Tours for an amazing day wine tasting in the Willamette Valley! Our tour ended up just being the two of us + our wonderful guide, Dillon. Dillon picked us up in a super spacious and comfortable van and we visited 4 amazing vineyards throughout our day! It was clear that Dillon had taken the time to read our questionnaire and got to know us on the drive before deciding which vineyards to visit. Dillon was also a wealth of knowledge about wine production and gave us great background information on each individual vineyard we visited. What a fabulous day! We had the great fortune of having the owner Jack as our tour guide. Jack was an amazing guide, who knew how to go with the flow and either talk to us about wine, talk to us about travel, or just chill. He knows his stuff and took us to a diverse set of wineries. I had sent over my list of places I wanted to visit and he did two I picked and two he picked for the first day. We enjoyed all four places and got to stop at this quaint little country store for a delicious sandwich lunch. He picked us up from our VBRO right at 10 AM and took us on an epic adventure. On day 2 we went to one place I had picked and all the rest he picked and they were totally awesome! We loved our wine day and to fit in another winery he even grabbed lunch before hand so we could eat in the car. In general, this is a good wine tour company that is very knowledgeable of the Willamette Valley wineries. My only issue--and this was something that I discussed with the company owner--was that we thought that it was truly a "private" wine tour. We were a group of 2 who were added to another group of 3 in one large van. Better notice should have been provided on the company's web site and reservation page to reinforce that their policy was to join different groups together, if your group is less than 4 people. Also, for $170 per person (and a 18% gratuity added at the time of booking), this may be a bit steep of a price for a wine tour. Our tour guide and driver was very friendly and knew hew way around the region, since she had grown up there. We were able to visit 4 wineries in a 7-8 hour span, with time for a provided lunch at a local sandwich shop in-between. read more

I've been out to Willamette a few times but have never relied on someone else to pick my wineries and I'm actually so glad I did! The wineries were top notch small producers. We found at least one new favorite and bought far more wine than anticipated because it was so good. I would give Backroads Wine Tours more than five stars, if it was an option! We had the absolute best day touring Willamette wine country with Jeffrey! My friend and I were in the van with a fun couple from Orlando. None of us were shy and we happily chatted about any and everything on the way to the different wineries. Jeffrey filled us in on the area and about the VCA and was so easy to talk to! Our first stop was my favorite- Saffron Fields new tasting room. It's stunning! You are in a beautiful glass and repurposed wood building surrounded by the owners personal art collection. There were comfy couches, but we opted to stand at the bar and try four awesome wines. I loved the Chardonnay and was glad that the Willamette is producing white wines that are as heavenly as their reds! The EIEIO was also fantastic! The most amazing aspect of this stop was the exterior garden patio! It was designed by the same person who did the Japanese Gardens in Portland. It's peaceful and the water feature is soothing while you sip the great Saffron Fields wine! For our second stop we went to Eyrie's tasting room. It is the oldest of the Willamette Valley wineries and very educational. We had some great wines here. I loved the rose. Hearing how the owners came up with the name and their techniques for wine-making was fascinating! Jeffrey took us to the best place for lunch- Community Plate, in McMinnville! We all scarfed down everything on our plates! I'm sure the platters Backroads provides are good too, but we were in love with our lunch options! Third winery of the day was Soter Winery. It was a simply, gorgeous place! There we met with another tourgroup from Backroads. Upon exiting our van the Soter representative greeted us with a refreshing rose. I loved it! The building is amazing and you are completely surrounded by grapes, as the vineyard sits on a hill. We had five tasty wines here. The final stop was at Argyle. They specialized in sparkling wines and we loved all of them. By the end of the day I thought I would be tired of trying wines, but tasting sparkling at the end was the perfect conclusion of our tour. Not to mention, the lovely gardens surrounding the quaint house where they hold their tastings! I would recommend Backroads Wine Tours and Jeffrey to anyone! I hope I can take another tour the next time I'm in Oregon, but I don't know if anything will top my first experience! read more

I have been needing and wanting to do a fantastic review for Back roads Wine tours since this past July, but just didn't make a point until now. I was a volunteer liaison with the World Domination Summit who was able to tag along for a tour. What a delight! Dillion, our guide was extremely knowledgeable (hands down) with the wine and culinary industry. He had a friendly laid back attitude, and having a tour with him felt like connecting with an old friend who knew his wine. He was just a very easy person to relate to. He had a relaxing and calming presence. He was able to connect to everyone and provide valuable information. I wasn't able to drink since I was the Ambassador of the day, but we ended up going to three different wineries including Bergstrom, Colene Clemens, and Elk Cove. I enjoy going to wineries in my spare time, but this trip was very special because it had been many years since my last trip to Bergstrom, and it was my first trip to Colene Clemens. Elk Cove is one of my favorites, so it was a rounded trip with a revisit a past winery, exploring a new place, and then ending the trip with a favorite. This company can arrange and customize tours. Ours was completely covered for tasting fees, transportation, gratituty, and a picnic lunch. By looking at other reviews, it looks like some of the tours are not all inclusive so inquire beforehand for the best type of tour. I really loved the day. The weather was beautiful and each stop was different. It gave tourists (and locals like me) a chance to really explore the different wines and wineries of the region. It was a full day from 10-5. My tour was free because I wasvolunteering, and between Dillion and I - we made a cool team sharing local knowledge to our out of town visitors. I first was skeptical though when I saw the price for the attendees, but it was definitely worth the price because everything was covered and the tour exceeded all of my expectations. Bergstrom wines are top of the line, Colene Clemens is a hidden gem with breathtaking views, and Elk Cove has reliable great tasting wines. Our tour was able to loop around the whole area taking in beautiful vistas and great wine. Our tour guide did leave for awhile to pick up lunches, and it may have been a bit more organized to stop at a winery that directly provides food. In the next few years I can see many more wineries doing this. I think Willakenzie, Anne Amie, Erath, and Ponzi are all offering food pairings and/or lunch options now, and I look forward to the expanding positive changes of matching food options to the wine experience. The day was such a treat. I was able to take in all the amazing vistas and enjoy a blessed day. I would recommend this tour for sure. I was so lucky that I could be a part of this because it would have been highly unlikely for me to do it otherwise. So thanks to World Domination Summit for organizing this too.
