Did not have a great experience here. I'd give it maybe 3 stars until I went to cancel my membership. First, the place smells like a bad combo of feet and climbing chalk. All climbing gyms have something of a funk, but this place is the worst. I joined to take the yoga classes mostly, but that's a hard pass. Classes start on time, but the gym allows members to show up late. When they do, they move the curtain, light up the whole room, and the noise of 100 climbers floods the room. Right in the time when you're settling in and trying to focus. Then the weight room is above the yoga room, so you get to hear weights slamming down during class, which is also disruptive. I found the classes super uneven, some being great (Bronwyn) and others being a weird combo of loud music over soft voices so you can't hear the instructor, or instructors borderline shouting at folks to expel breath as loud as possible. Not what I'm looking for. So, no problem, it's not for me. It's close to home, price is reasonable, and they have good climbing facilities. Boulder area isn't the best, but the rest of it is quite good with interesting routes changed often...enough. When I went to cancel, I was hit with a "policy" that you have to cancel on or before the 25th of a month or they will charge you for another month. I reached out on the 26th, 5 days before the next charge cycle. Seemed like plenty. Complained, go zero response. So basically I consider they robbed me of $110, because of course the cancellation policy is not visible..until you go to cancel. Hope it was worth the money, Movement. Cannot recommend. read more

I'm a regular here. Climbing is such a fun sport and this gym has great options for bouldering and top roping. They also have a lot of events as well, which provides a strong community feeling. It gets very busy in the afternoon when the kiddos are there but I'm always able to find an open route. I'm not a huge fan using a grigri, but that's what they provide. Check it out! read more

Lots of upsides but unfortunately their lack of space I think is the root cause of most of their issues. Friendly staff. Setting is pretty decent. Wall resets aren't very frequent. Facilities and bathrooms are clean and well maintained. Nice weight room with good variety of machines and weights. Main issue is have with this gym is the lack of space. Particularly, not a whole lot of bouldering space. If you are into bouldering you will likely be disappointed. The space is so small that you sometimes don't even have a place to stand when you're resting without getting into someone else's personal space. Also there are frequently a disproportionate amount of kids running around (is this a day care or a climbing gym?), some which have climbing etiquette and some who don't. The lessons they offer are super informative and well done, and all the staff have been kind and helpful to me. There's just a really good atmosphere and sense of community, which made it really enjoyable and low pressure for me to learn a new skill here without any fear of judgement. Small bouldering section with interesting problems. Safety does become an issue when it gets crowded, people are all over the mats very close to the wall, and I've seen multiple people fall almost on top of someone. Especially kids, who I've seen just lie down on the mat in the fall zone. When you walk anywhere, be very careful and make sure nobody is climbing above you. People just walk under other climbers without looking up... Speaking of kids, I've seen some climb with their regular shoes, not climbing shoes. Staff here are great and very engaging. I agree with others that the issues this gym has stem from its small size and age. I am super excited about the addition of AC at this gym since it can get hot/stuffy in the summer. Hopefully the AC will also make the gym smell less like an armpit. The boulder problems are creative and updated enough to not be bored coming week after week. Also love the expansive selection of exercise equipment. They could use a better warm up area as it seems like an afterthought. The work space could also be designed better. The recent redesign at the SF movement is a great example of a small yet comfortable work area. They removed the La Croix options in the fridge which was a bummer since that was the best deal for a drink. My least favorite thing about this gym and the reason I knocked off a couple stars is due to the recent design of the lighting for the bouldering area... Lighting Company Inc: It's a little dark in this room, would you like us to add a better light? Movement: Yes Lighting Company Inc: Great! We can add a slightly brighter light to make things more visible but not ruin the vibe! One of the smaller climbing gyms I've been to. It was pretty crowded on a Thursday night. The wait long for top rope routes wasn't too bad, but it always felt like there wasn't much space to move when trying to give active routes some space or stand/sit as you try to map a route before attempting. The 2 bouldering sections are pretty small. There was a musty smell throughout. Overall, an alright place to climb in the peninsula if you don't want to make the trip/drive to other climbing locations in the middle of the week. read more

Ben was our instructor and was kind and thorough with his teaching and touched on the important stuff making it seemingly straightforward enough for the four of us in the class. Kick ass gym! I have been going here since I was young and the gym was called planet granite. Honestly, after the change to movement the gym seems to be doing really well. Everything is always pretty clean and the staff are very friendly and welcoming. It is a commercial gym so there is a fair amount of over grading I must say, but that is no issue for most. Lots of good training can be done too if you have minimal experience with top rope or bouldering or even lead. They give student discounts too which is awesome! Speaking to people interested in climbing from a beginners standpoint. Having been to other movements in the bay I think this location has everything necessary for a beginner to get started have a good time. Whilst this location is smaller compared to other movements in the bay, if this is the most convenient movement gym to you, then there's no reason not to get started here. If you do get a movement membership, you'll gain access to all movement gyms, so you can check out other locations if you would like to. I'm relatively new to climbing - a few months since I started. Disclaimer: I come in to climb and use the facility in the late morning/noon. I never have an issue with parking or crowdedness for this reason alone. If I only had the option to climb later in the day after 3pm, probably would not come. Pros: - Good routes - Some staff members are excellent - Workout equipment is good for cardio/strength days -Bathroom has been noticeably clean and has fresh towels. Saying alot as I've seen mens bathrooms/locker rooms that should be sealed off and condemned. - Dry sauna is perfect after climbing - Most Adult/Young-Adult gym goers are always cordial and considerate. Cons - Can be very crowded with after-school sessions happening - Always frigid when fans are at full blast. Not sure if this is to create circulation or remove that funky foot odor that always seems to linger. - Parking, imagine how half the neighboring homes feel. It does the job, not much of a choice to go anywhere else unless you live close to Sunnyvale/Palo Alto or San Fransisco. read more

This place is awesome. Apparently there's not as many routes as the South Bay location but I think there are still an amazing amount of variety. I'm a BEGINNER beginner (I've only gone a few times in my life) and so I will talk about the V0, V1 beginner routes for bouldering There is one section of the gym that has a lot more V0, V1 beginner routes (the section with the swing). I spent an ample amount of time there! It is $30 for a guest pass but my friend had a membership so she was able to get my friend and I in for free! I came here on a Thursday afternoon and it was not too busy (I didn't have to wait at all for any routes). I'd say the perfect amount of people, definitely gets busier as the post work crew comes around. Parking on the street nearby! read more

For working out/fitness this Gym is fantastic. This is the gym I started working out in before I branched out to the other gyms in the bay area and also where I hit my fitness goals. I started my health journey a year ago at 160lbs and now I weigh under 125lbs consistently. I'm very happy with the progress and what rock climbing did for my mental and physical health. I'm sad to say that I cancelled my membership this month due to the reasons listed below. The positives of the gym is that they have a weight lifting/fitness machines area above on the second floor where you overlook the rock climbing gym. So it helps to watch other people rock climb while you are working out or running on the treadmill. They also have very hot saunas which is great for detoxing and helps your mental and heart health! Friendly staff who welcome you and say good bye as you leave the gym or gives you advice if you're stuck on a problem. They're definitely there to assist you. The negatives of the gym personally has to do with the women's locker room and the several incidents I had in there. The first incident was when I was changing after getting out of the Sauna and there were girls taking selfies of themselves in the mirror, I'm sure they were unaware about how highly inappropriate it is to take photos while in the locker room. I brought this up with management which was resolved with them putting signage up saying no photos/videos. The second incident was when a mother brought her younger son into the restroom and let him roam free without keeping a watchful eye on him, to which he peaked in the Sauna while I was in there in my birthday suit. I brought this up to management and suggested that they tint the Sauna door so that people can't peak inside. They said that because of liabilities and insurance, their employees have to be able to look inside in case there is an emergency which is understandable. I suggested tinting half the door so younger children are unable to peak inside but staff still can, but that suggestion was denied. The last and final incident was when I was coming out of the Sauna a younger male walked into the locker room and gave me such a shock that I was unable to say anything. After he left and I changed, I overheard him talking to his friends outside saying "if you have feminine looks and walk in there confidently, no one says anything" That being said, I have talked to another women in the sauna about the incident and she also said that there was a time she encountered a male in the women's locker room when she was also coming out of the Sauna. I understand that movement accepts all people from different walks of life and that they have no control over people going into the wrong locker room, I harbor no ill will toward Movement as a company, I just wish they could come up with a better solution to make women feel safe in their own designated locker room. This was one too many incidents and hence I cancelled my membership. TL;DR Staff are friendly, helpful, and welcoming. Rock climbing has helped me shed my unhealthy weight and I've hit my fitness goals while rock climbing here. Parents, keep a watchful eye on your children when they use the locker rooms as I have had one too many incidents in the women's locker room to stay silent about it. read more

Just spent the day with my nearest and dearest friends climbing and learning to Belay at Planet Granite in San Carlos. I have a niece that is destined for greatness. She is this tiny ball of insane energy and she needs to always be active. I wanted to give her a day of excellence for her birthday. I called Planet Granite about 5 days ago and I spoke with Maddie. I asked her hundreds of questions (I'm old school. Screw websites. I like to call and chat ) Maddie was professional and courteous and informative on the phone. She explained everything and answered every question concisely and professionally. She helped me book my classes and rentals ahead of time. The prices and process were fair and simple. Upon arrival. We had completed the orientation video and waivers so it was simple to get our rental gear. Now is the time I should say that. I was 100% newb. I was kinda low key terrified. Edder our instructor was patient , proficient and extremely capable. I've dealt with "professionals" that are condescending or rude or arrogant or just downright insulting. Edder was non of those things. He explained things simply and he used several teaching techniques to ensure that we understood the lessons. In one hour I was comfortable enough to belay my nieces and we spent the better part of three hours climbing. (We climbed until our novice muscles told us to quit.). The facility itself and the rental gear were clean. Everyone was courteous and wearing masks. Covid precautions were on point without nonsense. It felt welcoming and inclusive. I saw a freaking toddler climbing like Spider-Man. I didn't feel judged or feel that I was inferior to anyone while I tried my hand at climbing. I'd call this atmosphere "A very safe and inviting place to try something totally new and confidence building." I highly recommend that anyone who's curious bring a group of friends and try planet granite. It's worth it !! Thanks Maddie for your patience and professional demeanor on the phone. Edder. If you come in a weekday you can only come to this place before 3:00 PM. This place is just way to small. Parking is ridiculous you have to park in the shopping district next door or in front of a random residents house. Once you get inside it's basically Disney land. You spend more time in a queue than climbing. Every bouldering area is packed and you have to wait to do any project. And no offense but this place has no ventilation the bo and swear just concentrates and builds. It is foul read more

Pros - great gym, long hours, routes change frequently and constantly are challenging with a variety of body control circuits, extensive footwork boulders, etc. really nice staff (with the exception of some of the kids who work late nights) and full gym upstairs, yoga, dry sauna and CLEAN shower facilities. Cons - (not the businesses fault) too many kids in the bouldering areas that don't follow safe instructions, too many "campers" on the Mats in the bouldering areas making it more difficult to get in walls and increase risk of injury when falling or coming off a wall. I would recommend this location highly but not between the hours of 3pm and 4:30pm and not between 7:30-9pm, those seem to be the most crowded with either young kids or tons of young adults/ teens that lack etiquette Best times I've found to go are 9:30-close or 6am-11am, staff is super nice, place is pretty empty or full of adults with good etiquette who like to also help you with bouldering technique and are willing to be belay partners, friendly and out going read more

(Bouldering only) Very interesting how different gyms can be so different. My current home gym is Brooklyn Boulders in Somerville, MA, but I was in San Mateo for a weekend so stopped by PG for an afternoon. I think PG's bouldering is better than Brooklyn Boulders (BKB), it feels like the problems are more idiomatic and interesting, rather than being short versions of top-rope climbs. It has more natural "rock" feel walls (BKB has an interesting wood laminate), more surface crevices and corners, meaning potential stemming and fun techniques like that (little potential to practice stemming at BKB); and most of the problems go to the top of the wall; none do on the main wall at BKB. These walls are also super dense and filled with so many problems, which is good and bad. Good if you have the wall to yourself, but bad if it's at all crowded because so many problems are blocked. It's also the first time that I noticed holds from other routes getting in the way of your climb. (But that's not necessarily a bad thing, it's perhaps more "natural"?) They also had more interesting holds types. My favorite were these shallow jug-types that felt secure, but were too shallow to grip past the first knuckle. I felt that this is good training for different parts of the grip. They also had a very interesting green cylinder type hold, that I felt forced you to do monkey-bar style climbing, which was fun. Great staff and impressively stocked retail area. The men's locker room was huge! And the trad gym equipment looked pretty solid. read more

Smaller climbing gym but probably the only climbing gym as far as I am aware on the Peninsula. If you have been to other Movement (formerly known as Planet Granite) gyms, you'll notice it is much smaller compared to the Movement in Sunnyvale or Santa Clara. However, there are still definitely enough routes to keep you busy for a couple hours. If you frequent this gym regularly though (e.g. multiple times a week) and you like a good variety of routes to try, you might find that the routes aren't changed often enough. That said, there is a good mix of levels of routes available. The staff is also incredibly warm and welcoming, and are very patient and willing to answer my questions. I've also tried a yoga class here on a Saturday morning. Perhaps it's because I was sitting in the far back corner, but the room was extremely stuffy and warm even in the morning with the windows open and fan running. I signed up for a slow flow class intended as more of a recovery day workout, but it definitely felt more like a normal vinyasa class. Don't get me wrong, it was a good workout, just unexpected. It was a substitute teacher that day though, so perhaps that was why. Note that street parking is fairly limited, but you can park at the Papa John's parking lot a block away on El Camino. Tl;dr smaller climbing gym, but definitely great to have given limited options on the Peninsula. read more

I went on a week day morning, so everything was open, but I can see how it can get crazy in such a small space during a busy time. Decent sized rock climbing gym located right off El Camino. There's not a lot of parking along the side street next to the gym, so I would recommend parking in the neighboring plaza lot. Overall, this rock climbing gym is a great place to climb/work out, whether you're a beginner or a seasoned rock climber. The gym has climbing grades ranging from 5.5. to 5.13 and boulder grades ranging from v0 to v10+. Ratings here are on the softer side, and I would highly recommend coming if it's your first time climbing, as the atmosphere is friendly and the staff are attentive. They also offer a number of Intro to Climbing classes every day ($30/class, inclusive of gear + shoe rentals), where they teach you climbing + belaying basics and prepare you to take the belay certification test. Because this is the first Planet Granite location, some of the amenities are older, but they are slowly renovating and improving their amenities. One factor to consider, however, is that Planet Granite is on the more expensive side. A day pass costs $25, and a monthly membership is $90, before the initiation + other fees. read more

I've been climbing here for years and overall it's a great gym. The most unique thing about PG/Movement Belmont is the rock wall. It features artificial rock formations that you really don't see anymore with modern day rock climbing gyms. If you have a chance I'd recommend doing a roped climb where there's noticeable rock features incorporated in the route setting. It's probably the only bay area gym other than PG SF that incorporates their rock features into the route setting which is a great way to simulate outdoor climbing. The gym itself is very old so you may find that the walls and facilities are a tad run down, but don't let that deter you from coming. It's been great to see how the team has evolved the route setting over the years with a combination of new holds, volumes, and comp style bouldering problems. read more

This is an updated review for the yoga classes. I used to be snobbish and sworn to only go to dedicated yoga studios. After I went through teacher's training last summer, some of my yogi classmates highly recommended trying out a few classes at PG. I took Nadia and Doris classes, oh dear, they are not for the faint hearted! These yoga classes are geared towards conditioning the core for climbing, target strengthening of climbing muscle groups ( e.g. hip flexors, glutes), as well as functional movement patterns that mimics climbing. I come out of these classes more broken (in a good way) than a hard climbing session. One of the best teachers I've ever had (Edwina) as well as my classmate (Jen) are both teachers there, which says a lot about the high calibre of yoga instructors here. Now, I take majority of my yoga classes at PG and looking forward to trying AcroYoga in a few weeks. read more

My husband and I have been PG members for a couple of months now, alternating between Belmont and the Presidio locations. Overall, the top rope routes are really fun and varied at Belmont, and we rarely have to wait to climb. There's a "cave" route that is really unique here. I like this facility and the membership costs are great (e.g. we've signed up friends for free belay lessons), although I haven't taken advantage of any of the yoga or climbing classes yet. The crowd is usually a mix of beginners and more advanced climbers, while the SF/Presidio location usually skews more toward intermediate/advanced. As expected for the area, there are typically a lot of kids on the weekend, but I'd like the staff to be more proactive about monitoring them. There was a little girl screaming and yelling for what felt like an eternity one time and the staff seemed annoyed, but they were hesitant to actually say anything and let it go on for way too long. read more

The first time I started climbing was at this location and thought it was really fun even though I wasn't able to finish V0. At the time I was afraid of heights. That fear hasn't gone away. TIP: Just go up until you are done. At least when I've been to this location, it's rarely ever crowded which is great because my home gym in Sunnyvale feels like Disneyland. The lines can get long when waiting for routes to climb or even bouldering. This location is a bit smaller but never did I have to ask if a person was switching or not. That was nice for a change. There are two bouldering areas and the fitness area is all upstairs. I've taken the yoga classes here and I really like taking it with Nadia. I use to go to Doris's classes too at Sunnyvale, but it's hard getting up for that 6:15am class. However her core yoga class is great for the hip flexors. It is a small climbing gym but it is still a great and fun place to climb. The staff there are super friendly and nice! The locker room and bathroom are clean and neat as well. As many people already mentioned, overcrowded is definitely an issue. AM and early PM on weekdays are good times to go as there are not much people if you could make it. But they do have member appreciation nights every month and it is way less busier than usual. The gym is kid-friendly, which I am happy about. However, it also means that there are a lot of kids running around even though there are climbers on the wall right above them, which is really dangerous. I just wish that they would have someone at the floor to keep an eye on that. read more

This gym is smaller then their SF location but its cozy and quality of the routes were good. Their bouldering area is split up to 2 sections but it feels like 2 cozy bouldering caves. not too high or big but enough to get a good work out. I've been coming to the Belmont gym since high school 6 years ago, except when I went to college. I only use the weightlifting area, not the climbing area. I chose this gym mostly because (a) it was not very crowded since it is mostly climbers not lifters who come and (b) it opens later than all the other gyms (11pm). However, there are some pretty big issues. For one, the gym has no AC and no heating, meaning it is crazy hot in the summer and freezing in the winter. With the poor ventilation, it can get into the 100s inside if it is 80+ outside. Instead, they have these big fans that make the gym so loud I can't hear my music at full volume. Plus, as a climbing gym, there is chalk and dust EVERYWHERE. Just getting blown around by the fans. There is consistently a thin layer on even the widely used machines. You'd think a climbing gym would have some proper ventilation. Finally, some of the machines are extremely old and rusty/sticky making them hard to use. I've asked the staff if these issues can be resolved, and from what I hear many guests have asked the same over the years. The staff are very helpful and they said they have reported these to management, but it seems like management just don't care. In the 6 years I've been coming here, nothing has changed. Still no ventilation, still lthe same machines, even the fans they use are exactly the same ones. Even worse, it seems like they've been on a big marketing spree recently. I've been seeing new ads, new locations, and they even renamed the gym. So with the influx of members, the first reason for staying with this gym (the lack of crowds) is slowly disappearing. It's a little disappointing that management seems to focus so much on growth without considering making any tangible improvements (did I mention the membership fee has tripled since a few years ago, even though the facilities remain the same). At this point the only thing keeping me here is the late closing hours, as sometimes I work late. But if nothing changes soon I'll probably have to leave and work around my schedule. Came to PG as an experienced climber myself (I've been bouldering a total of two times in the past...../sarcasm) with my two friends who were first timers. $25 for a day pass and $5 for shoes - which in reality, you are paying $30 for 2 hours because your hands will probably fall off afterwards if you haven't already developed calluses on them yet. Only $2 extra if you want to learn how to belay....we didn't take advantage of it, but hey, if you're interested, it's only $2 more so that you can rock climb! The front desk attendants were helpful. After signing the waiver, we watched a five minute video on the basics of bouldering. After that.....off into the gym we go! They have two bouldering rooms - one to the left and one to the right. To be honest, we didn't know that we could go into the one to the left because the lights weren't on (I don't know if there are even lights in there....?) so we stayed mainly to the right. There are a good amount of routes in that room itself so it should probably keep you occupied for the most part. I've always heard that the rock climbing community is extremely nice and supportive, and based on the few people we met here, I agree with that! And lastly, we weren't sure if we could park in the parking lot next to PG since it was really more connected to the auto shop, so street parking could be a little iffy. Can't wait to climb again so I can conquer the V2's (don't laugh at me....)... but rock climbing gyms, imo, are expensive af. read more
