I've been following Mpishi's page for several months and love the different evening menus. I grew up in England so when I saw the British menu, I had to go. What a delightful experience! The staff were attentive and polite, the space adorable and a nice refit of the previous establishment. I also adore the name - for those confused by the provenance, there is a great backstory on their page. The food was flavorful and plentiful! A great variety that really brought me back to my says in England. My favorite was the Yorkshire puddings which while may appear a basic concept, are a royal pain to execute. I've created many a Yorkshire plop in my time and really should have asked to buy some to freeze and keep for Christmas Day! Wear your stretchy pants - you will NOT leave hungry. Amazing server (KENZIE) but horrible manager! This is the first time we've ever been here and we were so excited to enjoy an outside table on this beautiful Saturday morning. We each ordered an alcoholic beverage and a "mimosa flight for 2" which it said on the menu! After being served our drinks, the female manager came outside and reprimanded our server right in front of the table. It caught us off guard as we weren't sure was was happening. She then proceeded to turn to us and reprimand us that it's there policy for one person to have a 2 drink minimum at a time. She went on a rant about how they could get shut down and they don't serve more than two drinks at a time so people like us don't come in to get "obliterated". We were in shock, as we are both professionals with years of experience in the industry. It was so rude of her to attack her server in front of the table and then attack us for not knowing their policy. It completely changed the vibe of our brunch. The professional way to go about something like this would be to pull the server to the side in the back and politely review the policy with them. Then train the server to tell their table they made a mistake and the policy at hand. Instead it was an entire scene with other tables present who heard the whole debacle. Still in shock. read more

Mpishi...more like mpiSHIT. I don't know where to start. Spending much of my life in Toronto, I was beyond excited when apple maps said that MpiSHIT would be featuring some "Modern Canadian." It was Sunday Brunch and upon arriving, it took 5 seconds to realize there wasn't one thing remotely Canadian on the entire menu. They now changed it to Modern American, misleading to say the least. I decided to order the kielbasa hoagie with tomatoes and cheese as my mate was excited to try the "waffleS of the day" (Belgian waffles with a coffee cake crumble.)" Low and behold, it is time for our food, and disappointment was an understatement. My kielbasa hoagie looked like it was made by a young kid at summer camp doing an arts and craft project. My friend's "waffleS of the day" was ONE single waffle that looked like it was run over by a car and pressed with an iron topped with the most half assed coffee crumble I've ever seen. One single waffle with 2 puny slices of bacon for 12 whole dollars. My hoagie tasted like it was on clearance in the deli with an expiration of last year. Stale bread, canned tomatoes, and the cheese was so thick I was only missing nachos. I hate to give bad reviews, I eat out in Charleston all the time and love supporting the community. But a world with a single waffle for $12 is a world I don't want to live in. Go somewhere else, don't waste your money, and know MpiSHIT is the worst restaurant in the Charleston area I've been to in awhile. read more

It threw me off too but apparently it means chef in an African dialect- but fear not-menu is American cuisine w a nice array of food, that also has breakfast all day--but only open 8-2pm (and then family style dinners) . Our party had the ahi tuna salad ( huge tuna steak), hash of the day, open faced sandwich, quesadillas, and pancakes for the 6 year old in the group- we all really enjoyed our food. If you don't like flavor or have high expectations then you might actually enjoy this place. I took my mother here for brunch this past Sunday and was extremely underwhelmed. The space has received a nice face lift and the service was decent but the food was sub-par. The menu online did not reflect the menu we were handed. I'm a vegetarian so I was looking for items that did not include meat, which online they had meat sides listed as add-on's but I guess they change that for their brunch menu. I ended up with eggs that were overcooked (medium well is apparently too difficult), potatoes that were bland and had NO seasoning whatsoever, and giant pieces of white toast that they didn't even bother to cut in half. I tried ordering sourdough toast which was on the menu for the sandwiches but the server said that it wasn't an option for my meal. My mother had the breakfast quesadilla which was bland and had no discernible flavor. It was also very dry so she had to ask for a side of sour cream -- it didn't come with salsa, pico, or anything on the plate other than dry triangles of tortilla. There wasn't even enough cheese in it! My boyfriend did enjoy his salad with duck which was the only entree that actually looked appealing when it was brought out and was dressed nicely and the reason this is getting a 2 star review instead of a 1 star. If you mess up eggs AND salad then there would be a big problem. My suggestion for these people is to work on your plating and order a spice rack. Based on their name and story we were hoping for some unique African-inspired flavors and unusual dishes, however this was just standard brunch fare that you could get at any other restaurant and probably have a better meal. I might give them a try again once they are more settled but there are just too many other good places to eat in town to waste time here. read more

They served 6 different dishes, family style, which were all really good. We ended up tapping out and not being able to finish. Went to MPISHI for Mother's Day brunch and was extremely disappointed. Fifteen minutes into family style meal, no one had a plate. We finally got plates and they were sipping wet. We had to dry them. Never got a napkin the entire time. Had to beg for silverware. There were courses, and previous course not removed so we had to bus our own table. There were seven adults and two babies under two. But only enough food for about six adults. But they had no problem charging for each person including the babies who did not eat. 400.00 bucks was our bill. My parents just moved to the Charleston area and love this restaurant. Though their Greek scrambles and huevos rancheros were/are to die for, my avocado toast was far from. I've never had such a meal lacking in flavor, especially for $16. To say I was disappointed would be an understatement. I'll recommend the restaurant itself and the staff was great and friendly but, the toast gets -10/10 from me. Please consider adding tomato, greens, onions, garlic, or really anything to give it at least a little bit of flavor. I also suggest making the egg over easy and not boiled. read more

What a breath of fresh air is this restaurant! I've been to dinner twice now and both times the food was delicious and plentiful, and the service was great. The menu for their dinner offerings changes each night and is served "family style" which is pretty cool and not your normal method of service. The prices are quite fair for this town and especially so when you consider the large portions and ability to have seconds if you like! The desserts are homemade by their pastry chef/co-owner and pretty amazing. If you haven't given this place a try and you're in the area, you're missing out! read more

We came here for brunch and Indonesian night. Brunch was good, servers seemed new, but Indonesian night was amazing! We made a reservation for 6 initially which was expanded to 12 then we had another 2 show up for a total of 14 and they were fantastic at accommodating us all. The food was also amazing. Two of our friends at the table had spent 3 months in Indonesia while traveling around the world and thought the food was incredible. Every single thing was so delicious that even my picky fruit snack and goldfish eating bf and his picky friends ate everything. We also had someone at the table with a mild shellfish allergy that they graciously accommodated for, but after awhile he felt that an itchy mouth was worth it for just how good the rest of the food was. We were all blown away. It was so good and there was so much food that a huge table with a bunch of hungry dudes still left with leftovers. Can't wait to try more themed nights! read more

Went here for Sunday brunch with family including a baby. The high chair was out for us before we even asked. Server was smiling and attentive. Food--omelet, breakfast quesadilla, and fruit with homemade granola--was made by someone who clearly knows how to cook. None of that commercial "grill oil" taste on the omelet--this one was clearly done in butter. Everything was fresh. I have been to Mpishi multiple times since its opening and sampled breakfast, lunch and the specialty dinners. All were excellent and flavorful. The absolute best was a private dinner we asked the restaurant to host after a graduation. The food was SPECTACULAR! 25 people including all age ranges of kids and adults ate all the different food items they brought from the kitchen. Multiple types of salads, homemade bread, mac and cheese, the most incredible chicken and salmon dishes and more! The chicken and the salmon should be in regular rotation on the dinner menu because they were some of the best food I have ever had. Grandparents from out of town are still talking about how amazing the food was. Mpishi has flavorful food, done right and great prices too. We will be returning often! read more
