I have seen the prolific overcomer and powerful business woman she is, absolutely thrive!! That being said, I've wanted nothing more than to find her food and try it whether on the truck or at the restaurant. Well last night, I FINALLY had my opportunity! I was so excited, ya'll! Ive been anticipating the divinely juicy, perfectly seasoned box of the very blueprint of a low country boil by a low country life long resident who knows how to plate and sell out!!! Now to the initial ambiance & first interactions: I wanted a plethora of menu options, but being allergic to shrimp I wanted options that were void of any. I decided on 2 Garlic Crab Legs & Veggies Lobster 6 Garlic Oysters (raw) The restaurant even went the extra mile to provide my family a military discount! Coming into the establishment initially, it was ice cold on a 110 degree day. The vibe & atmosphere was completely laid back, friendly, but missing restrooms. A warm, friendly, young, studious and enthused cashier greeted me & my entourage with a gentle, shy, smile & hello. She was very helpful and went above & beyond to complete my to-go order. Me being a different culture didn't sway her whatsoever. She was so pleasant to work with! I informed here I was visiting from the Florence area but I am from Idaho. I wanted my oysters raw if there were any available. She obliged and informed me upon returning from the kitchen that not only could she sell me the oysters raw, but offered to put my garlic sauce to the side, and place my oysters on a bed of ice to keep ice cold on the return home. I was ECSTATIC! I was so exhilarated! I was more than eager to give my food a try. I was given a pager and informed my order would be ready shortly. It only took 18 minutes to make me MOUNTAINS of crab, plate up an ENORMOUS sized order of oysters, and the lovely cashier even walked my order to my table by the door! I was completely taken aback & so grateful for the love and kindness! After my drive home and anticipation that built a kingdom in 1.9 hours, I finally arrived to my castle. I swiftly dismantled my huge order of 4 boxes of the BEST seafood boils in America- UNTIL IT WAS NOT. I warmed up the lobster tail first. Less than 2oz for $14 Sweet and faint flavor of the lobster tail, but lacking in juices of the crustacean because it was cut. No seasoning or spice, but with the butter glob, it aided somewhat. I re-iced the oysters after making a stop to the local grocer to purchase lemons & to-go hot sauce (which they don't offer) I sliced the lemon, evenly dispursed some juice over the oysters, & lathered in a light swath of hot sauce & horseradish. I unboxed the food order in a few photos to show people how perfect the presentation was, as it has consistently been rendered for a decade. I bought the crab boxes because my children are big fans of seafood & I have always read & seen Britt Bratt post she was the best in the country. After warming up the food and dispersing it amongst my family, comments began circulating. Oh this don't taste good. Where's the seasoning? These are salty. Why are they watery? So I gave a potato, egg & leg a try. The crab meat was very oversaturated with water. There was not a single speck of seasoning in the shell. There weren't any added ingredients to flavor the water they were cooked on the clusters. There was a faint but miniscule hint of butter flavor. The salt was iodized & after each bite becaem overwhelming. The sausage & corn were naked! Outside of the added parsley and butter on top of the boil, that was it. No spice. No flavor. Just water seasoned crab & veggies. The corn was previously frozen. The sausage was cut into slices a fraction of an inch, usually typical of Jambalaya, not seafood boils. It was then I came to the realization. Britt Bratt's is ALL hype. Customers that never had correctly seasoned, adequately spiced, & abundantly flavored food that has been made with expert precision & execution call it "delicious". But me? Water flavored seafood with a hint of butter is not food. It's not good, delicious, or made with devout passion. Not only was I shocked, I was appalled. I was in complete disbelief. The celebrities. The recognition. The fierce reputation. All garnered by family, friends, & people that have been moved by misleading raving experiences of people that love water flavored boils. All I could do was cry. 11 years of admiration, $90 of hard earned money not to mention the $60 gas I spent on the trip. For slightly salt water seasoned food that looked pretty, but tasted indistict.

When we arrived it had all the feel of a old Country Restaurant which made me feel excited about the kind of hands that we're going to cook that food. We were promptly sat and were provided great service the entire time at the restaurant. One of my big pet peeves is to have an empty drink cup and it never got half empty the entire time we were there cuz all the wait staff and even the manager made sure they never did. My issue is the only thing that made that salad anything like California Dreaming where the Almond slivers. This salad started out as a spring mix with very little iceberg lettuce or hearts. The dressing was more of a honey mustard poppy seed kind of dressing with no bacon and I was very much not impressed with their choice of ham and bag shredded cheese. I did see some of the other entrees brought to other tables like the fried chicken and hamburgers which looked absolutely amazing. The cake counter would make you miserable trying to eat one slice of the size cake they had but I would definitely take that challenge the next time I'm there. They were amazing looking cakes and pies. All in all I was not at all impressed with the salads we got and will never get them again but definitely will go back to try their other items because they looked amazing.

I would change the name because the name suggests they have oysters only and it turns out there is more, not a whole lot but enough for a non oysterholic to come in and have something to eat while you chug an ale or one of the shots with a slimy thing in it I got to try a shot of something that tasted like bloody Mary's mix with an oyster inside, I felt the slimy thing going down the hatch and later ordered a dozen or so oysters Parmesan, cooked taste a little like scallops, not bad and I could go back and try something else The calamari was ok, not as great as I can make them if I had a fryer with a thermostat, the batter was a little too thick and I tend to like them with a see through batter not a filler, it was crunchy ok but maybe a little overcooked and not a lot of people know that calamari should be flash fried for about a minute and if you go beyond that is like the Michelin man The place is fun and be prepared for a loud environment because it is small but go with an open mind and it is a nice different experience I will go back and try their fish and chips

This is a small seafood market but has a good selection of fresh seafood…read more My mom lives in the area and comes here often to buy fresh seafood. She and I have bought brim, oysters, crab and shrimp. On our most recent trip it was local shrimp to make a gumbo. The staff is friendly and knowledgeable, prices are decent and the selection good. There's always a line of people looking for the freshest selection at opening , which says a lot about the market. If I lived here, this would be my go-to seafood market.

You can always tell of a popular and high-quality seafood market by the smell when you walk in…read more Such as the case with H&J Seafood in Goose Creek. To be honest I wasn't hunting for fresh fish, rather I was making Jambalaya and I was craving Boudin to go with it. I called ahead to make sure they had some and the employee was very nice and while they offer many varieties, I wanted pork and rice. They took my name on Friday ensuring it would be available on Monday, which it was. Upon entering the none assuming establishment which I wasn't anticipating it in a strip mall, not that it's an issue as it's a safe area, but I was expecting a free standing establishment for some reason. The two people in there were very nice and quick to greet me. It took a minute for my eyes to lift up from the display case stuffed full of a plethora of seafood. To be honest I last lived in Charleston in 2000 and spent the rest of my life in Kansas City and Austin. Fresh seafood, especially from a dedicate monger was hard to find so it was a reestablishing my roots. H&J has not only the freshest seafood available this far inland, but plenty of cooking accessories including spices, sauces and accompaniments for all your needs. Back to the display case, blue shell crabs, oysters, clams, shrimp, scallops and more fish than I can label were all wonderfully presented as if it was a snapshot in time of the best they had to offer. If only my menu had planned for this, I would have indulged in breaking my wallet. Alas, I told the nice young lady I was the guy who called in the boudin, which she indicated to look behind me. In the free-standing fridges, I grabbed my prize while I pondered some of their other bounty. Focus...I had to maintain focus! To give a short review on the boudin, it sucked. This is a subjective point, one that I compare with many other versions I've gotten from Louisiana companies that specialize in Cajun Boudin. First there was some off-putting spice in it one that struck me odd. I texture was ok but I didn't like it. Again, I don't hold this against H&J b/c first it's a subjective matter and second it was packaged and shipped in. To wrap up, I've found my fish monger and I will be going back. I know writing a review of a seafood market while only purchasing a pork product seems disingenuous, I grew up in Charleston and was a chef, one can "smell out" frauds and this isn't a subpar place. The people are nice, the seafood fresh and the quality is the best you get unless you know someone with a boat. Drop on by if you need any sort of seafood products!
