I wasn't aware of that, so after we ordered our food we went to camp north end to eat, which worked out perfectly! Back to Mr Charles, the service was quick. The gentleman who took our order was nice and offered suggestions when asked. I went with I think it was called the American all star, which came with 2 pieces of chicken, 1 fried fish, 3 jumbo shrimp and two sides, I went with Mac n cheese and collard greens. Everything was deeeeeeeeeeeeelicious! Even though we drove over to CNE to eat, our food was hot and fresh, seasoned to perfection. The greens could have used a tad bit of salt, but they were cooked perfectly. By the time I thought to take a picture of my plate, I had already just about devoured it, lol! I walked in and was able to place my to go order right away. The togo area is sort of small. The cashier was friendly and answered my questions I had about menu options. It did not take long to get my food. I had the chicken liver and gizzards, Potato salad,mac and cheese and pound cake. My friend had the fish and collards. This evening, I placed an online order through Mr. Charles Chicken & Fish's own website at approximately 7:06 p.m. and arrived at the Cambridge Commons location around 7:30 p.m. After waiting 15-20 minutes, I checked on my order and was told it would be another 5-7 minutes because they were waiting on my salmon bites. About 15 minutes later, I was told another 10 minutes for the same reason. Later, I was told the salmon was ready, but now they were waiting on my fries. Meanwhile, customers who arrived after me were able to come in, order some of the same items, receive their food, eat, and prepare to leave while I was still waiting. By approximately 8:17 p.m., more than 70 minutes after placing my order, I asked to speak with the manager. What was most disappointing was the response. There was no apology or acknowledgment of the excessive wait or conflicting information. Instead, I was told there was essentially nothing they could do because it was an "online order"--even though I ordered directly through the restaurant's own website. I was offered a free piece of cake, which I declined. Unfortunately, this is not my first issue with this location, and at this point, there is a pattern. I've continued giving them additional chances, but this was the last one. In the past, when the owner has been present, I've experienced a much higher level of awareness and customer service. There is no need for an apology or response to this review online. The opportunity to address the situation was while I was standing in the restaurant after waiting nearly an hour. On February 21, 2026, my friends and I visited Mr. Charles Chicken and Fish Uptown. We arrived around 4 PM and were immediately greeted with great service--our waitress, Jasmine, was friendly, attentive, and truly made us feel welcome. The DJ and later the live band created a great vibe, and we were enjoying ourselves while ordering food and drinks throughout the evening. However, around 7 PM, the experience took a disappointing turn. A man who introduced himself as the owner or manager, Smitty, abruptly approached our table asking, "What's going on here?" We were confused by his tone. We explained we were simply waiting on our food order to-go. He then informed us there was a "2-hour minimum" and that guests with a 7 PM reservation were waiting for our table. This was the first we had heard of any time limit, and we let him know we had never been told about it by staff. He claimed there was a sign posted at the front, but when we later asked the host, she admitted the sign had been erased and replaced--meaning there was no visible sign when we arrived. When we requested to speak with Smitty again to address his tone and approach, he returned with a dismissive attitude, offered a half-hearted apology, and followed it with a disrespectful, "What now?" The behavior felt unprofessional and unnecessary, especially considering we had spent over $250 supporting the establishment. While our server Jasmine was wonderful and the security guard Mike was kind, respectful, and apologetic, our interaction with Smitty left us feeling disrespected and unwelcome. They don't answer calls, return emails, they are not professional, nor are they friendly or receptive. They are a misrepresentation of comfortable dining. It was not creamy and had a majority of the cheese on top (a preference maybe but I like creamy and cheesy all the way through). The star of the plate was the potato salad. It took me back to my mamas kitchen. Just the right amount of sweet, the Mayo ratio was on point and the texture was just right. It would have been perfection if they didn't serve it in the same box as the hot chicken so it was lukewarm. They threw in a nondescript white roll and some bland hush puppies (add some onion and sugar to these things please). When I read Tameika's great ROTD, I had a sudden craving for fried chicken. Yep, the next day I made my way to Mr. Charles. It's a small shop with no room inside for dining in. As well, minimal parking. The young man who took my order was friendly and fun. Chicken with collards and cole slaw. I drove to a nearby park for a picnic and it was still warm. Chicken was crispy and delicious, the collard greens were still firm and the cole slaw was both crispy and creamy. I called to place a pick up and the young lady asked me to hold for three second. Well the hold time was over 40 minutes long , I actually drove to the restaurant and still was hold when I got there. There was only three people inside and they had place their orders already. I walked up to the counter and said that is me on hold. She did not apologize all she said was you are here now and I was busy. WOW.!!!! I politely said you asked to me hold for three seconds and promise to call back to the phone and this is the response I received as a customers. I can appreciate the hole in the wall type establishment especially if the food is on point. I was disappointed. It's too darn tight in there space to order food, wait on food, and pick up orders. The sandwich was a joke, ONE average piece of fish on a basic dry hamburger bun and tarter containers on the side. The fish was not fresh and fishy tasting and smelling. Not good at all. The chicken wings were okay but definitely not comparable to all the hype of this being some GOOD fried chicken. I could cook at home and get the same blah flavor profile. As far as how things are running here, I would 100% suggest you call your order in first if possible. The parking lot is small but is a one-way wrap around the building. There is not any seating and waiting for your order can be a bit tricky especially trying to social distance these days. It's a busy spot, so if you order at the location, it's best to place your order and step out and just check back in 15-20 minutes. Overall, they were accommodating, as one side I requested they were out of when making my plate and promptly let me know and gave to option for a different side. Two piece dark chicken & fish w/ mac & cheese and collards, about $11 I waited about 10 minutes and by that time quite a bit of ppl came in. Good sign, for me! I get to the car and the chicken fish is fresh and hot. I try the leg and I must say I was definitely impressed with the chicken. The fish was hot but was a bit overcooked. It was a little tougher vs soft and flaky. Flavor was good, added mustard. Went to try the sides and was disappointed big time. Both had little flavor and my mac was watery at the bottom. It was offputting. I get home and eat some more of the chicken and fish. Not long after I started to feel pretty bad. Needless to say, the rest of the plate went in the garbage. I settled on the shrimp and chicken combo that came with two sides. The healthy side of me chose hushpuppies and fries to accommodate my other fried foods. The mac & cheese did not look appetizing at around 4 p.m. The staff members were very friendly and upbeat. They remembered people's orders and that cut down on the wait. I probably stood in the coupe for ten minutes. I got in the car and wanted to taste the fried goodness and have grease all over my wheel as my friends did, but my food was just okay. I waited until I got home. The chicken is fried PERFECTLY, but there was no seasoning in the batter. My hushpuppies and fries were good, not something I'm running home for, but they were decent. Went in on a Friday evening. Ordered the chicken only special for like $9. The chicken had flavor and was hot.

I have a confession, I've been to Mr. Charles three times in the last week. It's just that damn good! Today their newer restaurant in Cambridge is closed and I've been craving that Whiting fish since my combo plate on Saturday. Yep, I'm driving to the original one to get my fix! As most have pointed out, this isn't a sit down restaurant. Who am I kidding, any smaller and you'd be picking up the food from outside and through a window! They have a couple of chairs for people waiting for their take-out orders and that's about it, no-frills to the max. I'm actually not even sure if they have a restroom avaliable to customers, don't quote me on that one. What they lack in amenities, they more than make up for in their namesake: Perfect Chicken, and even perfect-er fish! I told myself that I was going to be good and just get the Whiting fish with collards, but I couldn't resist and got the chicken as well (still got the collards though, so veggies!). One sure way to tell great chicken from 'just OK' is if you have to put any sauce on it. I get the leg and thigh with NO sauce. They have hot sauce packets avaliable but it's not needed. Perfect golden brown and seasoned just right. It would be a crime to put anything on this, just sayin'. Parking is awful, I know it, you know it, and Mr. Charles knows it. It's a tiny lot, bring your patience and please call ahead! It keeps the chicken flowing smoothly (and the parking a bit more bearable!). If you're looking for more of a restaurant package with the same delicious food, they recently opened a full-fledged restaurant in the Cambridge neighborhood in East Charlotte.
