Mr. Charlie's is absolutely a spot I'd recommend to anyone looking for good food and good vibes. My whole experience was genuinely enjoyable. The moment you walk in, you're greeted by multiple staff members--not just the hostess--which already sets the tone. And even on a busy Saturday night, when most places are barely holding it together, this team had everything running like a well‑oiled machine. I was seated quickly, and then came the highlight: my server, Taren. Yes, Taren--not Karen--and I really hope I spelled it right . She was fantastic. Super attentive without hovering, and from what I saw, she treated all her tables with the same level of care. The menu is also a win. It breaks down ingredients and preparation for each dish, so if you have dietary needs, you won't be left guessing. I ordered the chicken and fish plate with green beans and potato salad. Both the chicken and fish were seasoned perfectly. As a dark‑meat lover, I was thrilled to see thighs and legs that were cleaned and cooked right--none of that unpleasant slime you get when it's not done properly. The potato salad wasn't heavy on mustard, which I appreciated, and the texture was spot‑on. The green beans were a little softer than I prefer, but still flavorful. They also had live music, which added a nice touch. And I really liked the layout of the restaurant--booths, high‑tops, bar seating, and more--all arranged in a way that uses the space well without feeling crowded. Honestly, writing this review has me planning my next trip back to Charlotte just so I can return to Mr. Charlie's. I think the turkey wings will be my next adventure. If you're in the area, give this place a try. You won't be disappointed. Enjoy Oh yeah can't for get there version of a Long Island ice tea. I had two

Last spot in Charlotte. Much hype about this place. Fried chicken-oh so good! Fried fish-oh so yummy! Shrimp oh it's great! Hush puppies- crispy and tasty! Potato salad- not home made but ok Greens-let's start over with another batch Mac and cheese slightly over cooked noodle make very soft dish String beans not so great Yams-pretty good! Would I come back? Yes. I'm chalking up sides as a oops for today and not the product regularly served. Truthfully the fish and chicken were so good I'd definitely return when I'm in the area again. Thanks Mr Charles and Sons.

Fish (whiting) and chicken plate with potato salad and Mac and cheese

I was on this side of town and searched for fish and this spot popped up. The pics had me all in as well as the reviews...however I was not wowed. When I arrived the parking lot was a bit tricky but luckily I found a spot. The spot is small so the ordering and waiting area holds maybe 5/6 ppl. The staff looked so unhappy. Like no one smiled or said welcome or just looked like they wanted to be there. I ordered the fish and chicken dinner with potato salad, Mac and cheese and 16 drumettes (6 fried and 6 hot). The fish was way too fishy (whiting) like it was not the freshest. The chicken was okay. Well fried and battered on both the fish and chicken but lacked seasoning. The Mac and cheese was ok. It was not creamy and had a majority of the cheese on top (a preference maybe but I like creamy and cheesy all the way through). The star of the plate was the potato salad. It took me back to my mamas kitchen. Just the right amount of sweet, the Mayo ratio was on point and the texture was just right. It would have been perfection if they didn't serve it in the same box as the hot chicken so it was lukewarm. They threw in a nondescript white roll and some bland hush puppies (add some onion and sugar to these things please). My husband liked the wings but agreed the fried needed a little something on them. Overall the pics looked great but the actual thing was lacking. I'd give it another try specifically for the whole chicken to see if the classics are on point and to see what the other sides are delivering.

Wheewww Whileeeee Thank Ya Black Jesus If you're looking for sole good ole soul food...this I'd the place for you!! Its a smaller "mom & pop" type restaurant and is small on the inside and parking is limited. However, don't let that deter you because it works out. I got the Surf & Turf that comes with 2 piece of Whiting Fish, 2 Chicken Wings, and 2 Sides. *I got mac n cheese &yams* ...and babyyyyy, I ate the food in the CAR! The food was well seasoned and delicious! The yams were bomb and the mac n cheese was on point. Oh and don't forget to grab you a Lemonade

White meat with collards and cole slaw from Mr. Charles

When I read Tameika's great ROTD, I had a sudden craving for fried chicken. Yep, the next day I made my way to Mr. Charles. It's a small shop with no room inside for dining in. As well, minimal parking. The young man who took my order was friendly and fun. Chicken with collards and cole slaw. I drove to a nearby park for a picnic and it was still warm. Chicken was crispy and delicious, the collard greens were still firm and the cole slaw was both crispy and creamy. The batter was flavorful though not spicy and the meat was moist and thoroughly cooked. I really enjoyed this lunch and I'll be adding Mr. Charles to my fried chicken rotation. Amazing bang for your buck. The food is so good, the service is fast and the staff were so kind. Definitely come here for some classic chicken and fish. They have a great selection of sides. I had the fish, chicken, cole slaw and potato salad. This is the closest I've had to my grandmothers potato salad. I didn't love the fried okra. It was fried perfectly but lacked in flavor. The fish and chicken were perfectly seasoned. The fish stayed crispy and wasn't affected by the steam of the styrofoam.

One was a small side Caesar salad which I got. I was disappointed in the continuing practice for restaurants to charge for small changes like this within informing the customer. Waitress was very nice, however and attentive. What is also quite unique about the restaurant was that you could order small 4 oz beers, just for tasting at $2-3 each. The place is quite large and must get incredibly noisy at times with the hard surfaces and multiple TVs. There is an option to sit directly at the bar or at tables.

The wings were AMAZING, and the sliders were absolutely delicious! They were so good that I devoured them before I even thought to take a picture! Unfortunately, the pierogies were the one disappointment, especially since they were actually the main reason I decided to order from here. They were a bit too greasy for my taste. After eating two, I ended up placing the rest on a paper towel to absorb some of the excess oil, which unfortunately made them less enjoyable. That being said, I would definitely eat at The Degenerate again. I'd happily order the wings and sliders again, but I would probably skip the pierogies next time unless they're one of those dishes that are simply better enjoyed fresh at the restaurant rather than as takeout. Overall, there were definitely more hits than misses, and those sliders and wings alone are worth another visit!

The first time was in November 2025 and 2nd time March 2026 where the bartenders were professional, welcoming, knowledgeable, and made some of the best Bloody Marys we've had in Charlotte. The food was excellent, and we left both times excited to come back. Unfortunately, this Sunday's visit (around 2 p.m.) felt like a different restaurant. It was much busier, and service was noticeably lacking. We waited quite a while just to be acknowledged, our drinks weren't nearly the quality they had been before, and the Bloody Mary tasted like it came straight from a mix instead of being handcrafted like our previous visits. The food was also disappointing. It was much saltier than we remembered, and we never received the Caesar salad with steak we ordered. To the staff's credit, it wasn't on our bill, so we didn't mention it. Overall, no one was rude, but the attention to detail, professionalism, and overall experience that earned our previous five-star reviews just wasn't there this time. We're hoping this was simply an off day because we genuinely loved this place and would like to see it return to the high standard that made us regular customers.

Big, open and airy. Lots of seating and a few party rooms too. Loved the outdoor seating too. If it had been a little cooler that would have been perfect. They have cornhole and ping pong and just a fun atmosphere out there. Our server was warm and attentive. We did not have to wait for refills and she was quick to answer any questions we had. We started with a few apps - the chips and onion dip and the pigs in a blanket. The chips were well salted and the onion dip was DELISH!!! The pigs were wrapped in homemade party dough and came with a honey mustard crème fraiche. They were so good!! For entrees we tried the fried chicken, prime rib dip, and the meatloaf. The chicken was crispy on the outside, juicy on the inside, and perfectly seasoned. The mashed potatoes were so good too. The only misstep on this dish was the biscuit. Way too dense and not very flavorful. The prime rib dip was tender and came on the most crispy bread. What a great combo! The only thing that wasn't great were the fries, just nothing too special. The meatloaf dish was flavorful and came with those yummy mashed potatoes so great pairing. We didn't have room for dresser on site but we did take the monkey bread to go and enjoyed it later. Good portion size and full of apple and caramel flavor. Did not regret taking that home!! Really looking forward to this spot opening closer to home. Highly recommended

There were several "reserved" tables that remained empty until after we had finished eating, so I think the restaurant could benefit from a better reservation system with more accurate buffer times to accommodate walk-in guests. The fried chicken and waffles were perfectly seasoned, and the waffle had a unique texture and flavor that reminded me of a combination of a traditional waffle and a soft pretzel. The cheesy potato cake was absolutely delicious. The fruit bowl was also good, but I wish they had been a little more generous with the blueberry pudding.
