Mr. Charlie's is absolutely a spot I'd recommend to anyone looking for good food and good vibes. My whole experience was genuinely enjoyable. The moment you walk in, you're greeted by multiple staff members--not just the hostess--which already sets the tone. And even on a busy Saturday night, when most places are barely holding it together, this team had everything running like a well‑oiled machine. I was seated quickly, and then came the highlight: my server, Taren. Yes, Taren--not Karen--and I really hope I spelled it right . She was fantastic. Super attentive without hovering, and from what I saw, she treated all her tables with the same level of care. The menu is also a win. It breaks down ingredients and preparation for each dish, so if you have dietary needs, you won't be left guessing. I ordered the chicken and fish plate with green beans and potato salad. Both the chicken and fish were seasoned perfectly. As a dark‑meat lover, I was thrilled to see thighs and legs that were cleaned and cooked right--none of that unpleasant slime you get when it's not done properly. The potato salad wasn't heavy on mustard, which I appreciated, and the texture was spot‑on. The green beans were a little softer than I prefer, but still flavorful. They also had live music, which added a nice touch. And I really liked the layout of the restaurant--booths, high‑tops, bar seating, and more--all arranged in a way that uses the space well without feeling crowded. Honestly, writing this review has me planning my next trip back to Charlotte just so I can return to Mr. Charlie's. I think the turkey wings will be my next adventure. If you're in the area, give this place a try. You won't be disappointed. Enjoy Oh yeah can't for get there version of a Long Island ice tea. I had two

Last spot in Charlotte. Much hype about this place. Fried chicken-oh so good! Fried fish-oh so yummy! Shrimp oh it's great! Hush puppies- crispy and tasty! Potato salad- not home made but ok Greens-let's start over with another batch Mac and cheese slightly over cooked noodle make very soft dish String beans not so great Yams-pretty good! Would I come back? Yes. I'm chalking up sides as a oops for today and not the product regularly served. Truthfully the fish and chicken were so good I'd definitely return when I'm in the area again. Thanks Mr Charles and Sons.

Fish (whiting) and chicken plate with potato salad and Mac and cheese

I was on this side of town and searched for fish and this spot popped up. The pics had me all in as well as the reviews...however I was not wowed. When I arrived the parking lot was a bit tricky but luckily I found a spot. The spot is small so the ordering and waiting area holds maybe 5/6 ppl. The staff looked so unhappy. Like no one smiled or said welcome or just looked like they wanted to be there. I ordered the fish and chicken dinner with potato salad, Mac and cheese and 16 drumettes (6 fried and 6 hot). The fish was way too fishy (whiting) like it was not the freshest. The chicken was okay. Well fried and battered on both the fish and chicken but lacked seasoning. The Mac and cheese was ok. It was not creamy and had a majority of the cheese on top (a preference maybe but I like creamy and cheesy all the way through). The star of the plate was the potato salad. It took me back to my mamas kitchen. Just the right amount of sweet, the Mayo ratio was on point and the texture was just right. It would have been perfection if they didn't serve it in the same box as the hot chicken so it was lukewarm. They threw in a nondescript white roll and some bland hush puppies (add some onion and sugar to these things please). My husband liked the wings but agreed the fried needed a little something on them. Overall the pics looked great but the actual thing was lacking. I'd give it another try specifically for the whole chicken to see if the classics are on point and to see what the other sides are delivering.

Wheewww Whileeeee Thank Ya Black Jesus If you're looking for sole good ole soul food...this I'd the place for you!! Its a smaller "mom & pop" type restaurant and is small on the inside and parking is limited. However, don't let that deter you because it works out. I got the Surf & Turf that comes with 2 piece of Whiting Fish, 2 Chicken Wings, and 2 Sides. *I got mac n cheese &yams* ...and babyyyyy, I ate the food in the CAR! The food was well seasoned and delicious! The yams were bomb and the mac n cheese was on point. Oh and don't forget to grab you a Lemonade

White meat with collards and cole slaw from Mr. Charles

When I read Tameika's great ROTD, I had a sudden craving for fried chicken. Yep, the next day I made my way to Mr. Charles. It's a small shop with no room inside for dining in. As well, minimal parking. The young man who took my order was friendly and fun. Chicken with collards and cole slaw. I drove to a nearby park for a picnic and it was still warm. Chicken was crispy and delicious, the collard greens were still firm and the cole slaw was both crispy and creamy. The batter was flavorful though not spicy and the meat was moist and thoroughly cooked. I really enjoyed this lunch and I'll be adding Mr. Charles to my fried chicken rotation. Amazing bang for your buck. The food is so good, the service is fast and the staff were so kind. Definitely come here for some classic chicken and fish. They have a great selection of sides. I had the fish, chicken, cole slaw and potato salad. This is the closest I've had to my grandmothers potato salad. I didn't love the fried okra. It was fried perfectly but lacked in flavor. The fish and chicken were perfectly seasoned. The fish stayed crispy and wasn't affected by the steam of the styrofoam.

The waitress recommended the mimosa carafe since we were both ordering mimosas. They have the juice and champagne separate, and it's more than enough champagne. We were given more juice, too. We ordered the omelette. I added onions, peppers, smoked Gouda, and bacon to it. The Gouda set it off. It was delicious but could use more cheese on top or something. TN potatoes were flavorful and crispy enough. The toast was standard. My fiancé ordered the WWIII with chicken thigh. The waffle was okay. Nothing special, and the chicken was seasoned almost too much but was pretty good. Both paired well with the syrup. The music was great. Explicit but it was like they took my Spotify playlist and put in on the speaker. The waitress was fine. Wish she would've told us how much the mimosa carafe cost when she suggested it, but it was worth it. If we are in town again, we may go back.

Flights from Guatemala would arrive, and passengers would walk off the plane carrying bags of Pollo Campero. The aroma was unforgettable. Ever since then, I've been curious about what made this chicken so special. Fast forward to Charlotte, and now I finally understand the hype. I stopped in for a quick lunch and ordered the four-piece roasted chicken meal with sweet plantains, coleslaw, and a roll. Everything was fresh, flavorful, and satisfying. The chicken was juicy and packed with spices that set it apart from your typical fast-food chicken chain. It's hard to explain until you try it, but the seasoning has a distinctive flavor that makes Pollo Campero uniquely its own. The sweet plantains were excellent. Soft, caramelized, and sweet with those slightly crispy edges that make plantains so addictive. The coleslaw was cold, creamy, and crunchy, which paired perfectly with the chicken. The service was friendly, the value was excellent, and my order was accurate. I always take a moment to check my order before leaving the drive-thru, and everything was exactly right. Several excellent local restaurants, too. So I had high hopes today for Pollo Campero. PC was clean when I arrived at 12:30. Quite busy with about a third of the tables in use and the remaining were clear of dirty dishes. Surprising because they don't have a trash can that I could see - the staff bus and clean tables, clearing them swiftly. I ordered a three piece at the counter and it didn't take long until a running found my tent card and I was able to start. The chicken was thoroughly cooked, still moist. Not much for flavor in the skin today, it needed some hot sauce to bring out the taste. The cole slaw was creamy and crisp. Still good but also a little bland. The small dinner roll wrapped in plastic was fresh and fluffy. Overall, it's a nice little fast food spot. If you're looking for something in a known quantity along South Boulevard near the light rail, this will work nicely. [Review 728 of 2025 - 4162 in North Carolina - 24288 overall]
