I found this place searching on Yelp. Its a small family owned shop in Overland Park. I got there right before closing, so there was not a large selection to chose from. Mr. And Mrs. D. are the nicest folks you could ask for to peddle a donut in KC. On our arrival, they were dabbing children's noses with icing, smiling, and having a great time. It's a hole in the wall, a donut dive if you will. Selection was really limited when we arrived around 9:30. I'll try to get here earlier next time for a world famous cinnamon roll or custom donut. In 2013, the KC Star published an article reviewing all the independently owned donut shops in Johnson County. Our family made it a goal to try all of them. Mr. D's was the fan favorite. The ambience is old fashioned and sparse but the donuts and friendly service are out of this world. My kids love the cinnamon rolls "as big as your face." I have to say, mom & pop's donut places, literally MOM & POP, are the best. i know that in KC Lamar's gets all the credit, but between Mr. D's and Fluffy Fresh, there's no reason to ever go to Lamar's again. first off, the prices, 80 cent donuts, 1.20 for something bigger how can you go wrong? everything is fresh and delicious and not heavy like Lamar's get. we're big fans, and will substitute Mr. D's for the now closed Hilwa on 87th. love love love this place. read more

After reading other reviews, I decided to stop in to this place. The couple that runs the shop are absolutely precious! I got there around 830 and they were already sold out of most things (they must be really good!) I got a honey dip (as I had seen many recommend up here) and a maple icing cinnamon roll. I went here almost every Sunday as a younger kid, and we always came prepared with cash. It was totally worth it though, because the we were always greeted with a warm welcome. The doughnuts there are great, but you have to get there early otherwise the store is mostly sold out. My wife was going to stop there this morning for some goodies for brunch. Talk about an unassuming, very non-Krispy Kreme atmosphere. I love how the husband just sits in the back. He's filled up the cases, his day is done. His wife is great at what she does. I find the $1 store on the east wall very charming. The doughnuts... YUM! You have to make the trek to Shawnee and try these folks out. Good memories from this place. I remember being taken here once or twice when I was a toddler in the late 80's. My family was poor and we couldn't afford donuts, so it was a great treat. It hasn't changed a bit since then. These are really good normal donuts. It's one of those things where, if you weren't from around here and didn't grow up here, you will probably be like "what's the big deal about this place?" It's really hard to describe. Just the pleasant simplicity. Being open for only a few hours in the morning makes it special. The world needs more places like this. read more

The place isn't much to look at it on the outside or inside but the donuts were really good. I paid $10 cash for a dozen donuts and my family and I loved them. I had the honey dipped and cinnamon sugar donuts. The honey dipped were awesome, probably best glazed donut I've ever had. If you are in the area, you should stop by here. Donuts are probably my favorite guilty pleasures, in particular, cinnamon rolls and Mr D's are the best in all of KC! I'm always on the hunt for the perfect cinnamon roll and I have finally found one worthy of the calories. Not too sweet, not ridiculously big (I mean, really, who cares if it's the size of your head if it taste awful) and the perfect amount of cinnamon. They'll add frosting if you ask, which I always do and then I'm in sweet bliss. My husband usually gets their honey dipped which is their version of an original glazed and they are delicious, too. This little shop is 20 minutes from our home but it's worth the drive and makes an excellent start to my Saturday mornings! Oh, and bring cash as they don't accept debit or credit. read more
