I ordered the pepper jack breakfast burrito, and unfortunately, it didn't live up to the rest of the experience. Flat flavors, mushy texture, no real identity. The hot sauce was doing most of the work. It felt out of place in a spot that clearly cares about quality. Thankfully, the bakery and coffee saved the day. The pecan twist was flaky, buttery, and just sweet enough. The seasonal latte with cold foam was smooth, balanced, and dialed in. Overall, McLain's is a Kansas City staple for a reason. I have been to couple other Mclain's market places in our metro (Roe avenue & Gregory Blvd) & I've always loved their ambience, pastries and breakfast options. I'm so glad I stopped by this Mclain's market location at Shawnee after my morning bike ride. I saw a lot of fellow bikers stopping by this place for a breakfast after their ride. Lots of parking spots available in front of the store and street parking available too. Ambiance here has my whole heart. Beautiful place. Lots of tables, sofas, plants inside the store. I would've had a breakfast or a pastry like I usually do when I visit Mclain's. I've got only the signature latte this time. Loved the latte. Staffs here are super nice. We arrived at 12:00pm on a Sunday and the main bakery case was empty, we were disappointed to not get to try some breakfast pastries. They did still have cakes and cupcakes. Instead we got the cake bites and a cookie. The cake bites were amazing. The Monster cookie was good. We also got the breakfast burrito, one with bacon and one with sausage. I love this little shop. I have been here quite a few times to grab some coffee, and a little bit of breakfast! So here is what you need to know. They have really good coffee. And can make you all the coffee/espresso drinks. Including the boozy options. So that is a plus! For bakery items, they have a great selection for their size and all of them are buttery and delicious. There typically are quite a few healthy options! But, then... they also have breakfast items beyond the croissants and muffins. I got the farmer's protein bowl. Complete with potatoes, eggs, sausage (pork because it is delicious), roasted peppers, and avocado. Healthier than most things I get but still amazing. Everyone in the place seems very well cross-trained. They switch between jobs with little to no issue it seems. One stop shop for everything you need to get your morning started right. Buttery croissants? They got it! Freshly brewed coffee? They got it too! Delicious sandwiches? Many selections on their menu. McLain's is great in general, and this location in Shawnee is no exception to that rule. My go-to brunch item is "the Farm" which is a really indulgent croissant breakfast sandwich featuring sausage, egg, and avocado. I usually struggle to finish it, but keep ordering it because I'm yet to find another breakfast item that even comes close to how tasty this one is. My only real qualm with McLain's, is that every location is always packed to the brim when I visit. Whether it's lunch during the week, or brunch on the weekend, it's a competitive sport to hunt and gather a seat for yourself. Bonus if you can snag a table for more than two people. It's a great problem for them to have, and I'm so grateful that such a fantastic local spot does so well, I just wish that as they expanded they created more space for folks to sit, or perhaps offered table service and/or seated people just to cut down on the chaos during peak hours. That might not lend into the laid back atmosphere they are trying to foster, but it would make my Saturdays less stressful :-) At any rate, I can't recommend McLain's more if you're looking for a stellar local bakery and lunch spot. If you do play the game of finding a table, an extra challenge is to try and leave without purchasing a chocolate chip cookie. You get about 100 bonus points if you do because they are so delicious, it's truly hard to not indulge. read more

Maybe caught this place on a super-busy morning. I expected a better experience based on a recommendation. I thought it was very noisy, and a bit confusing. No. The customer does all the work, from ordering at the counter, to grabbing silverware, finding a seat, getting your own coffee, bus your own dishes, etc. Despite the lack of any service, the suggested tip is the 18,22,25%. We had a very special birthday party for our mom with about 35 folks including 10 children. We enjoyed delicious sandwiches and quinoa salad plus the not to miss McLains desserts and cake. The children and adults loved the hot chocolate. McLains was able to help us have a menu that met dietary goals from Vegan to Keto to Gluten Free. I was really sad that this place did not give what I expected it to give. It was all just okay. I had the CBS (chicken bacon sandwich) and it was a flop all around. My sandwich had the smallest piece of meat on this huge ciabatta bread. The chicken had to be about 3 oz.... The fries looked good but they were soft and had no crisp to them. I also tasted someone's avocado toast and it didn't taste toasted, and the avocado was more of a quac spread with no actual flavor. Now, my matcha was pretty good and that's the positive. Also, in their facility you clean off your own tables before and after which I was not a fan of. Idk y'all.... It just wasn't a win for me. read more

I've been to McLain's several mornings for brunch and each time I go I am reminded why I come back. The atmosphere here is so relaxing and inviting with plenty of sunlight coming in to enjoy a conversation and the tasty food! I typically stick with a vanilla latte and the very berry sunflower toast, which is a great way to start the day. The staff is attentive and kind and willing to answer any questions. It just didn't taste as good as I had hoped for $10! The sausage was yuck and the fruit sour. The cup cookie tasted old.The daughter wouldn't touch anything . We ordered chiefs cup cookies to go and I am sure they will be a hit! I love the cakes here as well. I think I'll stick to bakery. I love the McLain's Market concept. It is a full restaurant/cafe, but with coffee shop vibes that mean you can sit there for hours on your laptop or reading a book. Their expansive menu of breakfast, lunch, pastries, and treats, as well as coffees, sodas, etc. mean that you can order one thing when you get there, and another a couple of hours later. I like to get coffee and breakfast, and then a soda later on. I also love the space. I prefer spots that have a diverse selection of seating - and McLains has got that. Couches and arm chairs, tables, booths, window seats, etc. The entire front of the space is windows, providing ample natural light. The decor is trendy and warm. I've been here several times, and there is typically a good amount of patrons there - enough for the space to feel bustling, but not too many where you can't find a spot. The staff is also wonderful. I've had experiences where they remember my name. I've had staff check on me after I've received my food to see how it is. Today, staff was very flexible with me in modifying a dish to fit the requirements of an elimination diet that I'm currently on. If anything, I wish they were open later than 2 PM. I acknowledge that the business has probably made this decision because it makes sense for them financially. I've been there twice at closing time and been disappointed I had to leave. :( read more

McLain's can do no wrong! I don't often visit this location as I don't live close to it but it is always just as busy as the others. There is so much seating offered which they honestly need because of how busy it gets. They offer the same delicious menu as the other locations. I usually get the market bowl but this time I changed it up and got the pepper jack burrito which was A+. The bakery items always are amazing! We ordered our lunch and was so surprised to see they had SPARKLING WATER ON TAP. Like for free. It was like getting a free Topo Chico. Loved it. Ideal place for a delicious and healthy (or more hearty) lunch and dessert! I was blown away. Their selection is perfect and their bakery is outstanding. The people who work here are so nice and helpful, and the decor is great as well. It smells amazing as soon as you walk in the door- always a good sign. And it's really affordable! $40 for three meals plus desserts and drinks. I had the primavera cauliflower bowl and it was outstanding. Such fresh ingredients, artful presentation (this is a walk-up casual cafe, and they obviously hired top of the line chefs that you usually only find in pricier establishments), and a great combination of flavors. I also loved the bowl they served it in- very pleasing to the eye. I had a bite of my mom's grilled cheese which was also delicious. And the desserts! This is only a review on the service. We go here 2,3 sometimes even 4 times a week. I'd like to also mention this is my first yelp review ever so this isn't something I would typical do.. The service at this location is awful. I ordered through the drive thru, it was a very simple easy order.. I pull up to the window there was 0 communication I hand my card to them she hands me the food, my card and reciept then shuts the door before I could even ask a question. No hello, thank you, here's your total.. I have never felt more disrespected than this. Knowing this is a place we spend a lot of money at and recommend to family/friends this was sad. My recommendation would be to just try and avoid the Shawnee location because McLains is amazing but for whatever reason this location struggles with customer service. Maybe they were having a bad day which happens but this isn't the first experience I've had at this location like that. read more

When I mentioned it to the barista she told me I grabbed the wrong one, but I asked to make sure it was the right coffee when picking it up. They should put names on the cups or the order on it.
