We used Mr. D's donuts for our wedding and we couldn't be happier with how things turned out! First, the owners (Johnny and Bonnie) were so helpful and sweet! They helped us make decisions regarding what we wanted served and were so accommodating when we asked to meet for a tasting. They also sent us the sweetest note for our wedding and followed up to make sure everything went smoothly. They are such amazing people! The donuts were INCREDIBLE and all of our guests loved them. We had such a difficult time choosing what to serve because we loved every single flavor of donut. We used to live around that area 20 years ago and brought their donuts at least once/twice a week. Last week was our first time back since we moved 5 years ago. The inside furnitures and set up looks the same, the donuts looks like the same, but the owners has been change, the texture and taste of donuts was totally different! We are new to town and have been in search of our go to donut shop. We've had our share of donuts and Mr. D's is right up there with the best! We had several donuts (because why not) including a cinnamon-sugar cake donut, a honey dipped glazed donut, and an apple fritter. The apple fritter is generally my favorite donut and at Mr. D's it was done perfectly. Plenty of apple pieces, still a little soft on the inside and crispy on the bottom (without being greasy). The other donuts were equally impressive. We chatted for a while with the owner and generously threw in a couple free donuts for us. As a bonus it's the cleanest, cutest little donut shop inside. Stopped at Mr Ds today. I got a couple of the Honey Glazed donuts and a nice warm apple fritter, right out of the fryer. Everything was good, the honey glazed was nice and fluffy but not too sweet. The hot apple fritter melted in my mouth. The quality here is a 5 star. The only reason I'm giving them only 4 stars is that there wasn't as much selection as I would like. I didn't see any "Old Fashion" style donuts that are my fav. And nothing with lemon or orange or many other flavors. The main selection is chocolate and honey glazed yeast donuts. The used to be an ok little mom and pop donut shop. THEN they sold the place to a nephew or cousin or something and NOW, it's one of my favorite local businesses. At 9am on a Saturday they have plenty of fresh choices. They are ALWAYS TRYING SOMETHING FUN OR SEASONAL. PINEAPPLE FRITTERS!! what tops it off is this example of how they treat their community. that this was a HUGE Chiefs weekend, some little boy wanders in alone looking for a chiefs donut he's seen on the internet. They're all out. He"s trying to decide if he should leave or get something else.... Someone in the back is overhearing this (and his indecision) and just decorates him a Chiefs donut on the fly. Every donut we've had from there has been great, but the honey dip and the buttermilk cake are two standouts. Both sound a little odd, but are among the best in town. I'm not really a fritter guy, but after several over the top recommendations I decided I better not miss out. I have never had a fritter that tasted this good. The texture is perfect-soft but not gooey on the inside, and the outside is bronzed, with light glazing, but the crust s not hard at all. Probably because they make them fresh and sell out every day. When it comes to fruit dessert I'm not really an apple guy either, but this fruit is downright perfect. I think these apples were picked and peeled today! Ha! It is not too sweet or overly spiced. Fun little dated place. Looks like an old diner inside. Cash only. Mom and pop operation. It's fun to see this sweet old Asian gentleman shuffling around the place. He was really sweet to our girls. Some lady came in for the first time with a bunch of kids and didn't realize it was cash only. He offered to let her pay the next time, but she ended up finding cash in her car. But it's nice to be in a friendly business like that. All the donuts were decent, but the honey glazed donut is where they shine. Personally I like a less sweet donut. If I went again, I would stick to the honey glazed. That being said, Fluffy Fresh is still the tops for a glazed. Overall, a fun experience. read more

Oh, dear god, these are the best donuts ever. The D must stand for delicious. Also, the new "swap meet" feel to this place as you walk in, is strange, but hilarious. I have been eating these delicious donuts since I was a wee-kid. They still remember my order from oh-so long ago. I can recommend this place without any sort of reservations. Especially delicious are the cinnamon twists and any of their cake donuts. It's a shame they aren't open right now (It's 3 in the Afternoon, they are only open until 1). Be sure to get there between 8 and 9 and stay around a little while to eavesdrop on some of Shawnee's craziest and oldest racists.
