When my friend woke up with strep throat on our road trip, we had to quickly pivot our plans for the day. She needed to eat something and we thought ice cream might be easiest to eat so I quickly yelped to find a spot and this one popped up. Wow. Wow. Wow! This place gets PACKED and the lines get super long! But let me tell you the ice cream is pretty delicious. I got a build your own Sunday in a size small and wow they really top the toppings on heavy which is okay by me! The staff is really nice and the line moves pretty quick. Absolutely the best tasting soft serve in all of the Toledo area. Not sure what they're doing differently here, but it's a truer and bolder flavor than other places and, imo, a better texture! Service is quick and so friendly. They have ample parking and a well structured drive thru. The line gets long but they always move through it quickly, so don't be afraid of the wait. There is a covered inside area by the order windows with fans for the hot days, and a shared outdoor area with tables and a large park area next door with seating around the trees! This is on a nice corner lot that is easy to access from all directions. So many toppings to choose from, so many sizes, and great flavors. Most soft serve is quite boring and flavorless, but I'd eat the plain vanilla & chocolate flavors at Mr G's alone any day and love them! So good. Not that I do, of course...I usually get a cyclone with Reese's Cups & pecans and it's HEAVEN. Other family members are big fans of the orange/vanilla twist, cone or cyclone! They always have a seasonal flavor, too. At the time of this review, it's Watermelon Sherbet. Went through the drive-thru. They have an overwhelming list of options: sundaes, cyclones, cones, cups - I suggest looking at the menu online before heading over. They also have food like hot dogs etc. they have six sizes to choose from. Prices were reasonable. I got the peanut butter cup cyclone with nonfat frozen yogurt, size #3. It was plenty big enough. TOL. I've been told before that most of the icecream shops (and there are many) located in Toledo all get their icecream from the same place/company. I'm here to say that I cannot believe this to be true as many places that i've had has not tasted as good as Mr G's Barn soft serve icecream! It really does taste different to me. This strawberry cheesecake sundae was everything and more! Absolutely excellent, i'm so addicted now LOL. Give Mr. G's a try! They have both a drive thru-and walk-up window! read more

Very similar to Mr. Freeze, but honestly way better execution of the same concept. At this place, you can customize much more clearly with a very organized menu, something Mr. Freeze really lacks. Also, there are so many different sizes at Mr. G's which is a major differentiator. I loved my sundae which was the Apple Dumpling with cheesecake bites and Oreos that I added on top. The Apple dumpling was so hot I had to get another small cup of ice cream because it all had melted! This place is old school. Lots of unusual choices, well done flavors, and the serving sizes are very large. I got the apple dumpling sundae which had a lot of goodies added in with the ice cream. I liked that they'd added so much of the stuff 'cause that's who I ordered it, right? The pieces they added were even warm. I'd get it again. I think they serve only soft serve. read more

Loved the chocolate dipped cone-I cannot believe how high that they would be able to swirl that big #4!! My #2 was plenty, yummy and I made a mess like I was a 5 year old. The hot dogs were great too! The chili dog is that kind of soft-bun-gooey-cheesy goodness that goes down way too easy-you'll end up craving them. My kids love this place. We went there recently and tried their chili dogs. They are excellent. I was very surprised. I am a Rudy's and Ideal hot dog fan all the way, and I have to say that Mr.G's are right up there with them. Their ice cream and big selection is great too. I'm not from this area and my fiance took me to this place a while back... and we have been going back nearly half a dozen times or more since. First, I must say that the Mr. G's special had me hooked. Then I decided to try a chili dog and it was also delicious. Better yet, the prices at this place are pretty cheap, affordable, and they have a lot of variety to choose from on their menu. Also, they DO accept credit/debit cards. I asked for chocolate ice cream with Oreos mixed in, due to my boyfriend having a deadly nut allergy. They apparently cross-contaminate their ice cream because there was peanut butter in the ice cream which caused an allergic reaction. Luckily we caught it soon enough and got medicine in him, but I'm extremely disappointed in the establishment for not being more careful, especially with such a common allergy. The situation easily could've been avoided. We've never had something like this happen there, but now we'll definitely think twice about going back. read more

This a part of the neighborhood. When we eat here, literally half the time we see neighbors or classmates. People walk up or drive over. They bring their dogs and everyone wants to pet them. The kids play games while they wait. The staff is mostly local students and they are patient, friendly, and good at their jobs. They listen while my kids take 45 seconds to explain their order. They always remember extra napkins. They'll throw a cone on top of the sundae. Penguin Palace understands the assignment. They are an important part of our neighborhood and an essential part of summer.

This is unfathomable to me in 2026, particularly with the size of a small cone for $2.60. It just feels like a throwback. Maybe 4 stars for ice cream of this style (soft serve), and it doesn't really compare to ice cream like Jeni's or Handel's, it's a different category. The lines can be long, and they're cash only. But once you get to the front of the line, the service is always friendly. But the art is amazing. All the hand-drawn pictures to go with the sundaes and the creative sundae names and toppings/mix-ins. Some of the sundaes are the same ones they served 30 years ago, others are new. The portions are huge. If I recall correctly, for a large cone they take it all the way down to the bottom of the machine (although I've never ordered one myself!) The cake sundaes are quart size. I usually go with a small or junior sundae and it's plenty. It's my go-to stop on the way home from Centennial Quarry in the summer, and one of the places that I take friends from out of town to give them a taste of Toledo culture. I hope they keep going for many more decades!
