From the time I walked in and Ms. Pam said "Welcome Home" I knew I was in the right place! You can smell the gloriousness of the food from the sidewalk. There is free off street parking and a short walk to the front door. The hardest thing is trying to decide which of their gourmet items you want to try. The fried chicken wings were perfectly seasoned. The collard greens were amazing, the oxtail was absolutely authentic. Sampling all of the sides reminded me of how good soul food is supposed to be. Was in Coral Gables and asked my riding partner what they had a taste for. Of course, they would holler out "collard greens and oxtails!". Again, Coral Gables, so I had to hop on Yelp to figure things out. Yelp said Mr. Jack's would have "collard greens and oxtails!" and was 20mins away - challenge accepted! Parked in the FREE on-street parking (so rare these days) then went to open the door. From where I stood, was greeted with two words that touched my heart and stopped me in my tracks: "Welcome home." No kidding, from that moment on, I was made to feel like a member of the Mr. Jack's family. Not to mention the aroma of soul flood foating in the air like it was a family function. Goodness! Ok, gotta skip to the food because that CORRRRRNNNN got down in my SOUL!!! It's been weeks and I can't stop thinking about it. Everything served at Mr. Jack's is made in-house, fresh for the day. The food is served from a hot table except all fried and smothered items (chicken, pork chops, fish), which are cooked to order. All plates come with a rice, two sides and cornbread. The food, though. That food??? Mr. Jack's is soul food, period!! We had the smothered pork chops (2, huge) with white rice, creamed corn and spaghetti and, of course, oxtails with white rice and double collard greens. Every single thing was delicious. At the first bite of the smothered pork chop, my head fell forward. The meat was so tender, juicy and flavorable! And the gravy?!?! Down home gravy, all the way! Immediately wished I'd also ordered the smothered chicken wings because I know they have to be as delicious! The spaghetti was very good and a hefty portion, just a little sweet for my taste. Was so glad to see it offered as a side without extra charge. Now that creamed corn?!?! OMG! It was explained to us that the corn is shucked fresh, then cooked to perfection. The flavor on that thang....!! It was just....perfect. I don't have other words to describe it. And corn is not my favorite side so I wasn't expecting much which is why it truly blew me away! I've been raving about and missing it since that day. I tasted the oxtails which were very authentic in terms of soul food - tender with a rich gravy. The collard greens tasted like someone's grandmother was back there, taking her time, stirring a big pot of 'em with love. So good! Tender but with a good bite, pot liquor that can be sipped by itself. Perfect pair with the white rice (as was that corn!). There are also plenty of sweet treats at Mr. Jack's and we tried several: banana pudding, pound cake and sweet potato pie. The sweets are extra extra sweet at Mr. Jack's so keep that in mind. It took me a whole week to eat the banana pudding - could only do a spoonful a day. LOL But it was good! And the sweet potato pie?!?! As soon as a I took a bite, had to go back and get a piece for my favorite neighbor. This is the sweet potato pie she has been describing to me and in search of for the past couple years. (Got a phone call as she was eating the piece I'd delivered to her home earlier. She confirmed it is The One!) It has such a complex flavor - nutmeg, cinnamon and something else extra special that makes it stand out from allll the other versions of sweet potato pie. C'est magnifique! Kudos to Apostle Malone, who served us like we were the most important customers ever without knowing us or anything about us. That tells me he and the team treat everyone the same. Prices are very fair for the amount of food - the bag with two plates felt like it weighed 10 pounds! I certainly ate mine over three days. The restaurant is spotless, bright and very neat. It is takeout only. Plenty of free parking on the street or in the lot. My only problem with Mr. Jack's is that it's so far away from me. I ordered Smothered Pork Chops, Mac N Cheese, Yams & Peach Cobbler. I also ordered a drink called Blue Magic & Sweet Tea. Smothered Pork Chops were good....Mac was good...Yams were good....Peach Cobbler was good. It comes with a Cornbread Muffin and that was good. Sweet Tea was good. This is my 3rd time visiting Mr. Jack's Soul On The Go, and they never disappoint. From the greeting from walking into the restaurant and making you feel at home is key for me. Several options, but I went with the oxtails because I love the way they cook them. The oxtails are seasoned to perfection and falling off the bones. Their macaroni and cheese is cheesy with several cheeses used. The fried corn is one of my favorites as well and you have to pace yourself because you will eat it all at once when you bite into it. This place is a hidden gem. As soon as I walked in I was greeted with a 'hello, welcome home' which I thought was nice. I ordered the catfish with yellow rice, corn and mac & cheese with a lunch box of fried chicken wings. Everything was delicious and the portions were good. The wings were big, juicy and crispy with good flavor, they must brine them overnight. The catfish and rice with some hot sauce was amazing. Overall a great, clean place with a very friendly staff. The only knock is they do not take phone orders, you have to use Doordash if you want to order ahead and have it ready for pickup, that convenience would have added an additional $6-7 to my order so I chose to order at the counter and wait for my food. I was so excited to finally try the spot that opened in my neighborhood. I have frequented the establishment at least 4 times and each time I try something new. The meals come with a starch and two sides and cornbread. They also sell desserts. I have had the banana pudding, coconut pineapple cake and sweet potato pie. All were pretty good. As for the food...I have had baked chicken, pork chop, oxtail and a cheeseburger. The oxtail gravy had a little sweetness to it and I am more of a savory person but they were delicious! Everything was great, hence why I keep going back. The sides are standard soul food staples and are ok. The spaghetti side is a meal by itself. But let me tell you, I love corn and Mr. Jacks southern fried corn is out of this world ! The mac and cheese was delicious. The corn bread was just baked, smooth and melts in your mouth. Spaghetti was flavorful and full of meat. Amazing ! If you haven't been to Mr. Jack's, don't waste time because you are missing out. This was my first time having soul food. And I heard it was really good, but I didn't realize it was extremely good. For starters, the fried chicken is amazing. As you place your order they already have it frying. So you know it's going to be fresh. The Mac and cheese probably one of the best I've ever had. But the oxtail though, probably the best seasoned thing I've ever had. Also never had collard greens and it's the perfect level of acidity, plus the hot sauce it just blew my socks away. The workers there were so nice, when you come in you hear "welcome home." And makes you feel so welcomed as well as the interior. It makes you feel like you're at home. I forgot to mention, for $14. I loved the chicken it was nice and soft full of flavor and the yellow rice was soft too with great flavor. The yams were SOOO good and I been craving them for a minute. Soft and not too sweet just the right amount. The Mac was good too I liked how it wasn't super salty , and it had a good amount of flavor.I'm a sweet corn bread person, but this one has the right combo of sweet and salty. First time visiting and i've been on the hunt for some authentic and great soul food. I LOVE this place. The staff is also very welcoming, kind/friendly and funny. I came right before closing time on Sunday around 5:45PM. I was lucky enough to get some mac and cheese as they only had one container left. I called prior to arriving to confirm i'll be able to make it on time to order and the man behind the counter was kind enough to inform me on what they had left and were almost out of. That's very considerate and i was very appreciative of it. I absolutely enjoyed the H out of everything, especially the candied yams. IMO; the mashed potatoes were a little more on the dry mash side even though they added gravy, it felt it could use a little more milk or heavy cream; (IF) whichever they use . These are also perfect for somebody with special diets because the flavor is there but not OVERLY powering. The fried chicken was fried to perfection and made to order. Definitely worth the 15 minute wait ;) it was juicy! perfectly crunchy, not too greasy. JUST perfect. I also very much enjoyed the mac and cheese but i wish it wasn't as dry as it was but the cheese flavor is THERE. baby loved it so much she only let me have a few bites. Baked beans were also ordered as a side and I love them. Sweet and a little bit of tangy. Sweet potato pie is one of my favorite desserts. I was so glad to notice they had this gem on their menu.
