Mr Mopp and team are incredible. Staff is quick with a smile and offers of help. They are incredibly patient as children figure out how to hand over the right amount of money. Their gift wrapping is absolutely beautiful. You'll find them pulling a wagon around Albany/Berkeley events handing out bubbles or bouncy balls to the little and not-so-little-anymore kids. Love the new Mr. Mopps' Toy Shop. They have a whole range of great toys for all ages and budgets. The gift wrap option is a plus (just a buck!). The obvious absence of any big name corporate brands (like Disney) is appreciated. Lots of toys that encourage your kid's own imagination without all the branding. I am a terrible gift shopper, but I love this place! I came here looking for a gift under $30 for my best friends 8 year old nephew. I was feeling desperate as I had waited until the last minute, but was hoping that I could still find something cool and within my price range. Even though I only made it 10 minutes before the store closed, a helpful salesgirl appeared immediately and offered numerous great suggestions, patiently answering my questions and never making me feel rushed. The checkout guy was really friendly too. They had a fantastic selection of pretty reasonably priced stuff for curious, creative kids, (I would have had such a blast here when I was a wee bit younger) and I look forward to coming back! read more

Mr. Mopps' is the best! I have nothing but good things to say about this shop or the owners. On my most recent visit, I went in to buy a birthday gift for a friend's daughter. Devin asked me about her age and interests, and gave a ton of great recommendations. I particularly love that they focus on toys for kids, instead of "boys" and "girls." Their selection is wonderful, they're super knowledgeable, and the atmosphere is warm and welcoming. They'll even wrap your gift and add a beautiful paper crane to the top for just a dollar! A true Berkeley gem. read more

I love Mr. Mopps! Interesting and unique selection of educational, crafty and mainstream toys. Super friendly staff. Lots of reasonably priced items. Nice book selection. Everything a neighborhood toy store should be! It is also my son's favorite toy store which is the most important part of the review. read more

Mr. Mopps is a great neighborhood toy store. Since the new owners took over a year ago, the place has come alive - the selection is great, ranging from little inexpensive items to the larger and well made items that cost quite a bit. What a great old-school toy store! An interesting selection of toys arranged in a maze-like fashion that encourages wandering and browsing. The customer service is great also. I came here looking for a stuffed animal my son lost. The two staff members behind the cash register looked through their stock lists online and through catalogs trying to help me track down the maker of the stuffed animal. Also great selection of those tiny cheap toys for stocking stuffers and goodie bags. read more

I bought a teepee at Mopps for an Xmas party. When I got home and assembled it, I realized it was much smaller and flimsier than I expected. I called the store and asked if I could get a refund. The clerk said, "No, how do we know we can resell it?" He said he would check with his boss and get back to me later in the day. Which he didn't. After a few days I asked if I could bring it in and talk to someone (I was going to be in the neighborhood)? No, we're too busy to talk to you. He did call later and leave a message but every time I called back he was on a break, eating lunch or with a customer. Bottom line, I paid over $100 for a product I was not satisfied with, they refused to give me a refund, I couldn't exchange because it was one of a kind, and I got the big run-around. It made me appreciate the box and chainstores who refund, no questions asked. I might go back to Mopps but only for a standard item like Legos and only if I was 100 percent sure I would never want to return it. John Larson read more

mr. mopps is an absolute treasure!!!! if it were to disappear.....there would be no christmas, no birthdays...no fun and excitement that goes with the eager anticipation of giving special loved ones and friends something unique !!! traditions begin when you shop at mr. mopps!!! as for the staff, i find them always helpful inspite of the constant flow of shoppers. they might be on the quiet side, but they have alot of work to do there. i for one appreciate them and their wonder inventory of toys, games, books, rocks, stuffed animals, pens, paper, origami, miniature soldiers, magic tricks, cards, puzzles, gliders,, more than i can begin to name. yeah mr mopps, thanks for being there!!!!! read more

Best place to find a toy in Berkeley. Wide selection of high quality toys. I just wish they were open later -- they close at 5:30.

Sure, at first glance this looks to be an incredible toy store. And, over the years it has been. I suspect they are under new ownership because the customer service is appalling. My aunt bought my son a large Lego kit here for his bday. Turns out he already had it so, we went in with her to exchange it for something else. She didn't save the receipt but, the box was unopened, in perfect condition, and we were not asking for a refund-simply an exchange. We spoke to a sales person and the manager and both told us they would not make the exchange. My aunt and her family have shopped here frequently for 30 years!! This is a neighborhood toy store and it should serve the neighborhood. This was customer service at its worst. On the way out my aunt told the manager that she was losing a very good customer. When my aunt turned away I saw the manager say under her breath "So?"....are you kidding me? In these times, a store like this should do everything they can to keep customers, not drive them away. Even my 7 year old was surprised-he said he wanted to make a sign that said 'CLOSED' so he could go put it on their door. Well, if the service keeps up like this I think they'll be putting that sign up themselves. read more

So I've now been to the new Mr. Mopps twice and both times have had poor service so I give up. First time, I was waiting to pay and a male employee was on the phone going on and on (sounded like he was talking with a wholesaler) and I finally said "excuse me, could i please pay?" His response was that I should wait because he was on the phone. When I asked whether he could multi-task, he said that someone would be with me shortly. Huh? Since when is a phone call more important than ringing up a sale? (turns out, the guy on the phone was the owner). Strike one. Went in again recently and asked a female employee about the toy I was looking at. She knew little more than I did and speculated about the answer to my question. I asked her whether she could break the scotch tape and open it to which she replied 'no.' She said that if it wasn't what i wanted, i could always bring it back. i explained that the gift was for a two-year old, not for me, and that bringing it back would be too much of a problem since this was a gift. Her response: "Well, I hope you find what you want." HUH? Strike two. And I'm done. I really do want to patronize locally owned non-chain independent stores but I'm not stupid!!!! read more
