I live down the street from this place and I'd never been in. I absolutely love that I took a gander with my bud Joyce today! I honestly could spend eternity in there and probably never get bored. I ended up cruising around in this sweet, epic tricycle then playing games with the owners. I got an awesome game by this company Maranda which makes lovely games you can leave out because they have a great aesthetic. The people who own and run Mr. Mopps bring the kind of warm personality and expertise that make this neighborhood toy store the gold stand and the first place I always go when looking to buy something that my kids will love--large or small. Here's a story to illustrate: I went away for a few days last week and promised my 4-year old I'd buy him a little something on the way home, but due to travel complications, it didn't happen. So I went to Mr Mopps the next day, shared my story, and the owner helped me pick out a little parachute toy "souvenir" that my kid ADORED the moment I gave it to him...until it broke after a few minutes of play. When we returned to Mr Mopps a short while later, I was recognized, my story was remembered, and he immediately offered to replace the toy and comforted my son (without blowing my cover that I hadn't actually bought the toy on my trip). This place rocks. Came her as a kid. I could believe all the cool toys they hands they toys you could not find at other toy stores. Also they had Legos sets that could only be ordered from the Lego magazine. This is one of the best toy stores that I've ever been to. read more

The new management of Mr. Mopps is as friendly as it gets. I lost a gift card to this store (birthday present for my son) and one of the new owners hand wrote me a store credit-based on my word alone. I thought this level of trust between stores and customers was a thing of a bygone era. I found it very touching. There is a great selection of toys of course, particularly playmobil!! If you have very young children its definitely worth a look and there are a lot of different craft kits and science kits. Also, this is a great stop if you are filling a piñata (better than the party store) or making goodie bags. This is a great toy store! I'm glad I have a kid just so I can come here (I never did before). Also great if you need a kids gift too. What a huge selection of toys, great brands, some hard to find items and collectibles also. They have stuff for babies on up to intricate model kits for much older children. Staff is always friendly and very helpful. It's a pretty magical shop that I could literally spend all day in if I could. I like the idea of Mr. Mopps'. It's independent, it's big, it has lots of stuff. But, man, it was weird walking in there. Nearly silent. None of the staff look up or say 'Hi.' Instead I am greeted by the *tick tock* from the clock on the wall. I looked around and was impressed by the type and variety of toys they had. Although they didn't quite have what I was looking for, I don't hold that against them. But, like I said, the place was silent. A toy store should be fun and interesting. Not silent. Unfortunately, after more than a decade of appreciating and travelling into Berkeley to buy toys and gifts (so many calico critters, breyers!), will no longer be a customer. Sadly, their policy and attitude to handling a customer return (toy fell apart as toddler would try to play), the staff and management response was to blame the user for incorrect method of play rather than accept the customer's experience of the toy not working in live play for the age advertised on the box. Without a doubt, the greatest toy store in the East Bay. Possibly the greatest toy store on the entire West Coast! This place is magnificent! It is absolutely magical to set foot in here. I love every time I am invited to the birthday party of a friend's kid, because having a legitimate excuse to go to Mr. Mopp's is always a treat. The people who work here are wonderful. Mr Mopps' is simply a great toy store. I just ran there on my lunch break and chose a great birthday present for a kid I know. The selection is so much more than just Barbies and Hot Wheels. There are science kits, puppets, craft supplies, games, and more. While I didn't seek assistance from the staff I did overhear them offering great suggestions to other customers. They seems to really know what is appropriate for certain age groups and interests, unlike those disgruntled masses at Toys R Us. Be advised, Mr. Mopps is the spot for toys, no video games and few electronics. read more

This place is huge! I definitely wasn't expecting such a large space when I first visited. I appreciate the fact that most of the toys they stock encourage thinking and creativity. I love their activity kits: build a sock monkey, the mini pottery wheel, make your own treasure chest. Wow, I was impressed! I shop here all the time for my nephew who is a typical hyper and over stimulated 4 year old. It's great to see him calm down and actually get interested and involved in activities instead of getting bored with them after an hour. read more

This might be the bestest, funnest toy store I've ever been to...and at 29 years old, I didn't feel at all creepy rummaging through the shelves; there's a nice friendly-to-everybody vibe. Great selection of intriguing and unique toys that you can't find elsewhere.It 's been around forever, and hasn't changed substantially since my childhood. Would like a better selection of Steiff animals-- they used to have an excellent selection years ago. It's paltry now. Staff could be friendlier. Better still is finding a shop full of things you wish someone had bought for you when you were a kid. That's what takes Mr Mopps' from good toy store to legendary toy store. Room after jumbled room of astonishing treasures for kids from birth to child-like adult. Especially worthy of note are the bins of stocking stuffers, windup toys and doodads. These are selected with great love and attention to detail. The books section also bears the mark of a developed aesthetic. Every corner of this place is filled with finds, big and small. Your eyes have no place to rest and there is no real order to things. They just sort of flow. You'll lose an hour in here at the least and find about $200 worth of things you want. What a shop! For all adults who are secretly kids on the inside... or for those who have kids. :) First its huge! And its perfectly organized in that way that you can find what you are looking for, but always run into something that you didn't know you wanted, but now you do! And you have got to respect a children's bookstore that doesn't have a simple "books" section... but a poetry, fairy tale, adventure, etc. sections, so kids can go straight to the genre they love. There are also crazy masks and costumes, all the silly little gummy things you could ever want, toys for new ones all the way up to adults, doll house items, coloring books, card games... its truly amazing! read more

I've gone to all the toy stores in the area and, for the most part, we've had fairly positive experiences. However, the service at Mr Mopps has been consistently adult and child unfriendly. We go back every year or two, and it's usually the same experience. Little assistance. Unwillingness to answer questions. Bad attitude. Sometimes rude. For a old school toy store, there's not much more you could want. Mr. Mopps as a great variety and tons of toys. Awesome place to shop for Christmas, stocking stuffers, and lots of stickers and basic art supplies for kids. Attached is a small book store with lots of coloring and activity books for the small fry. I found myself wandering the aisles, taking a trip down memory lane, and when I looked at my basket, I had way too much for my daughter and had to put half of it back.
