There's a reason they've been around since 1922. Staff were very nice for how chaotic it was inside. The white fish was juicy, crispy, and soooo tasty. But the tartar sauce needs to be on every shelf in every grocery store. The baked beans were some of the best I've had. Baked potato was sweet, earthy and cooked perfect. The rice and gravy were seasoned perfect. Don't even get me started on the biscuits..wow. Hushpuppies were good. My only complaint was I order the hamburger steak and onions but I didn't get a whole lot of onions and the steak was very thick and a little dry. But I don't even care, the fish, tartar sauce, beans, and biscuits were hands down worth every penny. read more

I ate there for the first time last night and it was wonderful. The staff was so welcoming and courteous, and our waiter was hilarious. Very entertaining but right on top of his job and made sure that we had everything that we needed. The food was fantastic. Especially the grilled pork chop that I had. My wife and I returned to Mr. Spud's on 181 in Fairhope AL to enjoy some Southern comfort foods. My wife craved the hamburger steak and onions which was cooked to perfection. I am not typically a loaded baked potato person. In fact, I usually avoid baked potato's because of carb counting and in past experiences found most don't thoroughly clean, forget the value of salt, or burn the skin. Mr. Spuds knows "spuds". From the complimentary cup of potato soup to the perfectly prepared loaded potato. It was clean, salted, and baked to perfection. I was with a party of 16,the server was exceptional but the quality of the food and all of the additional charges for the food turned my dry and tough grilled pork chops from $15.00 to $29.00. The service was great. The fried chicken, not so much. I ordered 2 breast. Both were split so they would cook faster. Cooks that have to split the breast are not good cooks. One was so tough, I had to send it back. I told the waitress to tell the cook, do not split the breast. I don't mind waiting. She returned with a fresh cooked one, which was a lot better. The chicken however, had no seasoning, very bland. I ordered the mashed potatoes off the menu. They came topped with gravy, which I did not ask for. The corn salad was warm and the greens were mushy. My husband's rice was so overcooked, it too was mushy. The coleslaw is amazing. Biscuit with lunch? Leave those for breakfast. They really should add cornbread. My last server, Tammy left more of a lasting impression but you can't always have the personality like her. Our server was good though and did her job. I can't remember her name. I got the blackened fish sandwich again but didn't change the bread this time so it was on a sub roll. It was just as good as the first time I got it. Nice place for some good country style meals like mama used to make. I had the day's special and it was really very good: beef tips and gravy over rice, turnip greens, mashed potatoes and peach cobbler all for $10. My husband had the Moo Burger and it was the best bleu cheese burger with onion rings we have ever had; yes, looked so good I had to steal a bite, yum! Absolutely incredible! 10/10 this was the BEST burger I've had in the South. The potato soup and homemade roll with honey butter . We sat outside on the covered porch and enjoyed soft lighting & listening to the crickets chirp while we ate. Gabbi was our server and she DID NOT disappoint! She spent a few extra minutes with us telling us about the history of Mr. Spud's and recommended her favorites. We weren't just another table, she made us feel welcome. Was here over the holidays visiting and I did not feel welcome at all . To be completely honest I felt like the waitress immediately did not take kindly to our group. Not sure if it was a bad night but it certainly felt uncomfortable. Didn't say anything until someone else brought it up on the way back to the hotel. I'll be fair and say my girlfriend loved her Cajun crab and the food was okay but certainly not worth feeling like a nuisance to an establishment I'm giving money to. This place is a strong four. Super nice staff and excellent food. The complimentary potato soup is so good you should order a large bowl with your meal. It's a headliner. Also good was the country fried steak, the fried okra. The fried crab claws were very good. The po boy was okay, probably would change that part of the order next time. Also a minor order mishap was handled very well. Often a good rebound can more than make up for a small error. A suggestion: have a basic baked potato on the menu. That's what we came for. Had lunch here today and the food is always consistently good. Nothing spectacular but consistently good southern food. I had the daily special which was country fried steak and you get to choose 2 sides. The fried squash was really good and crispy. It's very hard for fried squash not to go soggy. The rice and gravy was your basic white rice and brown gravy. My husband had the blue cheese burger and it was great and I'm not even a big blue cheese fan. He had the onion rings that were from scratch with a remoulade that was very good. The sweet tea is always excellent. They were very busy for lunch and the server seemed a bit frazzled, we waited a while to be greeted and for drinks but I'm thinking she just had a large section at the time. We were in town for a soccer tournament and found this cute mom and pop place. We both ordered a Saturday lunch special, and were happy with our meal. They serve these BIG biscuits with a sweet butter with your meal, very good. Our waitress and other staff were extremely friendly. For our meals we had Chicken Tenders and Country Fried Steak. All accompanied by various side dishes. All were served warm and to eat! I joined my husband's Harley Owners Group (HOG) for lunch today at Mr. Spud's. What a great lunch spot!! The Saturday specials were listed on the napkin box on the table which consisted of a meat plus 3 sides for $9.99. The waitress took our drink order and brought pans of hot out of the oven large biscuits with containers of honey butter. Wow! These biscuits were amazing!! I chose the fried chicken with sides of corn nuggets, slaw and pear cobbler. Everything was fresh and delicious. Service was excellent for the group of 9 at our table.
