We have a new favorite restaurant in Baldwin County. I would say Fairhope but most people would think downtown...this out on route 181. We went there tonight, Tuesday, and the restaurant was as packed as most restaurants are on a Friday. Our server said people get in line at 3:00 waiting for the doors to open at 4:00. We got there about 6:30 and were seated fairly quickly. Our meals started with a cup of delicious baked potato soup and melt in your mouth yeast rolls. I wish the soup and rolls were on the menu as a stand-alone. (Our server said they do offer it that way but it's not listed on the menu as such.) My wife had the hamburger steak with sauteed sweet onions, fried okra and new potatoes. The hamburger steak was delicious with a seasoning that is hard to describe...just believe us, it is delicious. I had the chicken fried steak with collard greens and new potatoes. An excellent choice. Perfectly prepared with a wonderful gravy. As a side note, we noticed a diner near us getting a hamburger. It is the same large serving of meat as is the hamburger steak dinner. I am definitely going back to try that. Prices are very reasonable. The restaurant is very clean with a down home decor. The waitstaff is very friendly and courteous. We highly recommended this restaurant. You will have to wait a few minutes for your food but it's worth the wait. We were pleasantly surprised by this place. We moved to the area a few months ago and we've driven by it a bunch but decided to check it out this week. It is really cute inside! Each serving is enough to feed a small army but the prices are very reasonable. We had fried pickles and I think there was an entire jar on the plate. The batter was light and they were fried perfectly. It was like that for the onion rings I got on the side of my sandwich too! What really made the meal was our server Tammy. She was so cute and sweet and took such good care of us. She totally made our day. I would go back to eat there just just for Tammy. None of our go-to's for Shrimp PoBoys were open Monday and everyone had a hankering...so I Yelped and Googled and Mr. Spud's came up in the list. I was hesitant because I have heard great things about their steaks and the crab legs, but nothing about the seafood. Needless to say, we were not disappointed! Had my first trip to Mr. Spud's this weekend. Was greeted by Mr. Nolte at the door. The man was very friendly and welcoming. The décor was a family/country, but not overly done just enough to give the place some character to make it stand out from other family eateries. The place was very clean. Serving staff was quick, polite, and performed excellent. I really do appreciate the young lady who served us as our four year old lacks volume control, and I believe I spent half my time reminding my daughter to use her indoor voice. My wife also ask that here shrimp be grilled and not fried and with a quick note on her pad it was taken care of. No thought if it would be an extra charge or if the kitchen could handle it. We ordered an appetizer of crab claws which was good, for a half basket there was a lot in there. I ordered the oyster poboy the breading for the oyster was seasoned very well, and for a $12 dollar sandwich they load those oysters on there. I've been to some places that would make you pay double for that amount. I will admit however I messed up when I went there. I did not order the burger. Burgers were being slung out of that kitchen left and right and I could see why. The burger looked and smelled delicious. I regret my choice in the oyster poboy in comparison to that burger. It was a very good poboy, I'm just saying the that burger looked heavenly. Finally, I want to add one thing to this review. This place serves beer and wine. In the past I have past up this location because I did not think Mr. Spud's served beer. I was erroneous in my assumption. This is the best lunch place around! The "meat and 3" menu is absolutely fresh and homemade. No frozen or canned vegetables, no instant potatoes. The peach cobbler crust was absolutely made from scratch. The wait staff was also friendly and helpful. Highly recommended! read more

Good lunch spot in very cute building both inside and out. Food is representative of southern staples complete with a meat and 3 special. Meatloaf and fried chicken are good. Vegetable choices for the meat and three special were decent. Fried okra and squash casserole were both very tasty but peas and carrots were straight out of the school cafeteria. Our first visit to Mr Spuds was on a Friday afternoon at 4:30 pm. We were seated right away. By 5:30 there were already a lot of people waiting for a table. I had the Country fried steak with my sides being a baked potato and fried okra. My husband has the fried catfish with turnip greens and fried okra. We were brought small cups of complementary potato soup, which was good, along with two large rolls covered with a sweet butter which were very good. Our food was hot and crispy when brought out and very flavorful. The coating on my country fried steak was light and not greasy at all, as was the okra. My potato was very good, large and perfectly baked. It was served with butter and sour cream. The catfish was served with tarter sauce and was also very light and crispy and the fish was cooked perfectly, also not greasy at all. The greens were seasoned nicely. Service was friendly and prompt and our server came by to check on refills and that everything was good. No rushing on the check even though there was a crowd waiting. We got a chuckle out of the hand sanitizer bottles on the table compliments of a Funeral Home. Wash your hands folks! We will definitely be back, so many items on the menu to try! read more
