After going to a very popular sushi place in Santa Clarita, I was recommended to try another sushi place that has a high reputation. Treating a friend out for bday dinner we came to Mr. Sushi. Ordering the AYCE was a bit pricey especially for some special 1 per person items not being available, the variety to choose from is large selection of appetizers, nigiri, hand/cut rolls, and specialty rolls. My family came up from LA to visit me so I took them here because we were craving sushi and found this place. It was also my first time here. Parking was easy to find. It is located in a plaza with other restaurants. We got seated right away. The waiter was able to take our drinks down fast. They have friendly staff and was able to check on us if we needed anything. Ordered 2 bento box combo. My grandma said that the chicken was dry and hard to chew on. My sister said that her beef was over cooked as well. Although the food looks great in pictures but the it was not cooked well. All the rolls we ordered were pretty good. I would probably come back just to eat the rolls. They cut the sushi in big pieces so it makes it look like it is a lot. However some of the rolls had too much of the imitation crab meat in it. We all loved the sashimi sample platter. It actually comes in 3 pieces each of tuna, yellowtail and salmon but we asked for more salmon and no tuna. Overall was not as satisfied on the food. As usual they were so pack and busy . Nonetheless the food was great the yellowtail sushi was so amazing . We were there on Friday night and was way too loud . But it just means the sushi is great so I didn't mind too much . The female server was great . She was o top of customer service! I only wish the restaurant was bigger to house more people. My husband and toddler came here for dinner yesterday and we discovered my toddler loves sushi. We all had such a good meal, literally the best place to get sushi in SCV. Downgrading my prior review to a 3 star. Giving this place a lower rating based on how they've declined in their quality of fish and presentation. Also keeping in mind that it's an AYCE. It's been a long time since they changed owners but it was much more awesome before. Maybe my prior review was based on those memories or maybe I was just starving. Big reason number 1. They put sauce on EVERYTHING!! Not everything needs sauce unless it's the crazy rolls that people love so much. I'm referring to the nigiri. The simple salmon, yellowtail, red snapper nigiri. It should just be fish and rice, right? Nope - not here. Everything gets drenched in ponzu sauce. Ponzu sauce and more ponzu sauce. You're unable to taste the fish at this point. All I tasted was ponzu. The acidity of the sauce overpowered everything. It was put on the Aji that I ordered. Poor fish didn't have a chance to shine. I really wanted to spit it out in my napkin. Thank goodness they didn't put the sauce on Uni! Leaving this as a 3 star because if you remember to order WITHOUT SAUCE beforehand you should be ok. read more

This gave me an idea about the quality of fish and like I said, it was just ok - fishy. The other two were very similar (no salmon) and enough to fill us up. Sushi bar was wide open so I took a seat. Most tables were filled. Decent environment for a strip mall location. 2 large screen TVs. I asked for basketball on one of them. Sushi cutter asked what channel - I said ESPN. This request seemed to be over his pay grade and he asked someone else to change the channel. The request got totally ignored. The cut of salmon sushi was skimpy and narrow. The spicy tuna roll was standard fare. There was really nothing remarkable about the experience. This was our second time going and we went on Halloween evening so I really had no idea what to expect. They don't take reservations on the weekends so just be aware. However, they do have outdoor seating with a tent which was great and very accommodating for various group sizes. They also do not have all you can eat (AYCE) right now which they usually have, so just an FYI. I can understand with COVID that might be tricky. Service was great, we had multiple people check on us, refill waters, bring napkins, etc. All our orders came out correctly and within a reasonable time frame which can get hard with sushi. It was all delicious, it is easy to make bad sushi so I always love finding a spot that is yummy and that I'd return to. From the chirashi to handrolls to special rolls - I also love their garlic edamame. At the end of the meal the owner came out to check on us and thank us for eating there which was so sweet and thoughtful. He brought us 2 beers on the house and some homemade! pineapple sake made by his wife which was amazing. I'd return alone just for his service and attention. The Bento boxes and lunch specials are really good, you get a variety - salad, soup, tempura, rice and 2 selections of sushi, sashimi or cooked items. Good service, nice set up during COVID. Mr. Sushi came highly recommended by a couple friends who I completely trust when it comes to sushi. It is nearby and I have tried the restaurants in the same strip mall but never thought to come here, it doesn't look like anything special from the outside. I am glad it was pointed out to us, the food is excellent! I had a bunch of nigiri and a dragon roll and I am very satisfied with the food here. The service and the covid protocols however are just mediocre. They have outdoor dining which is nice and spread apart. We were given tangible menus which I hope they disinfect and plates and utensils that have been sitting outside, we had to blow on them to get rid of the dust. Two of the servers were wearing face shields, but ours just wore a mask and no one was wearing gloves, even the bussers. The service is efficient but all the employees seem to be overworked and stressed. None of them are happy to be there; we never saw any of them smile. They just run around getting you stuff. I do appreciate the speed at which they work. It takes a lot for us to venture out nowadays and I have to say we did not feel 100% safe covid-wise and cleanliness wise and the service was not super friendly although very efficient and the food was excellent. read more

I dined here 2 nights ago and was extremely disgusted with the practices of one of the sushi chefs. I sat at the sushi bar, and in the middle of making a sushi roll, the chef pulled out his cell phone from his pocket, sent a text, and continued making the roll (all while wearing his gloves). Whatever disgusting germs were on his phone were now on the roll that was to be served, as well as all other food he would be handling. Since he was not making or handling my food, I stayed and ate at the restaurant. I was so disgusted that I called the restaurant the following day to inform the manager. The girl who answered the phone, when I asked for the manager, immediately responded with "The manager is very busy." When I asked if there was any way I could speak to a manager, she handed the phone to another girl named Ashley who told me she was the lead server. When I asked Ashley if I could speak to the manager, she said "She doesn't take personal calls" (what the heck?) then said, "She doesn't speak English." I asked for the manager's name, and was told it is Cindy. At the end of my conversation, I confirmed "So Cindy doesn't speak English?" and she responded, "She does, but she doesn't get the lingo." It seems like any feedback about this establishment cannot be provided and changes in unacceptable practices will not take place, so I will not return to this restaurant again. read more

I love this place so much. My go to is Song's Sashimi Special. It's a dish made of sliced cucumber, topped with a good portion of fresh salmon, onions, sliced avocado, jalapeños, cilantro, masago, and a delicious (I believe) citrus sauce. It is my favorite item off their menu. If I'm craving an actual sushi roll, I get the Morning Glory and the Fireball Salmon Roll. Oh, and for appetizers try the Spicy Tuna Poppers, and Dynamite.
