I get why NO ONE talks about this place! It may be close, and the little snow it has is man made, but the customer service is horrible. They were supposed to open the snow tubing @9am-they were happy to collect the money for tubing but then opened the tubing just after 10am. After making everyone wait, they realized they needed to pull the snow tractor through the hills, since it was too icy. Then they decided to do annual maintenance of drilling and fixing fences (did I mention this is New Years Eve, not the beginning of their season), while the customers waited, after an hour they finally opened the tubing runs, BUT Wait, now the boss came over to yell at customers to only walk up through the deep snow w/ their tubes to return to the runs. (There are no magic carpets here, great exercise - though.) This boss was the same man who nearly drove us off the road on our adventure up to the ski resort, going nearly 70 miles an hour, passing several cars at once in the no pass zone. - Hmmm, kill your customers before they even reach the resort, not good for business. The views are spectacular. As a final comment, the tubing runs are too short. Snow Play at Big Bear is a much better deal and much more enjoyable. read more

First off, let me say that I'm a total n00b when it comes to winter activities. Snow is usually something I throw at people, not as a road downhill. I have nothing to compare this location to since this is my first time snowboarding. So for the season veterans out there, read someone else's review. Go on! Are they gone yet? Okay, here's the lowdown. I found the place enjoyable. The view is indeed breathtaking. Who knew there was a winter wonderland so nearby? Seeing all that powder atop trees and the roads plowed out a few feet is a sight to behold. Around 2pm, the clouds created this fog-like atmosphere where it got hard to see when you're up in the slopes. THE DRIVE UP Might want to take some chains for your tires, as it does get a bit slick. But that day, like many others, we managed without. CHECK-IN I actually didn't have to handle getting lift tickets. I hear there are lots of different resources to get cheaper tickets, from Craigslist, ski conventions, or various other websites. I was told to make sure you make reservations online at least a day in advance. Also check their website and weather reports the day of, to see if conditions are right for [skiing, boarding, or tubing], or you might find your drive up end up in disappointment. Oh, no reception up there either, so try as you might to do Yelp or Foursquare check-ins... If you're going as a group, set your watches and coordinate meetup spots! You might start pissing each other off otherwise. TRIALS OF A BEGINNER Get there early so you have more time to learn (and for softer snow). I was there for about 5 hours (11am-4pm) and that certainly wasn't enough time to learn the basics of heeling, braking, and balance. I hear it's just best to get some basic instruction and just learn as you go. I guess some people are more coordinated with their body than I, as by the end of the day, I was still eating snow. There's no shame though, as there were other people there learning and falling like me there. Wear sunscreen. Aside from an outfit, definitely bring sunglasses and (good) gloves. Possibly a scarf, bandanna, or some kind of facial covering. I brought a beanie along too, but I was sweating so much that I didn't even bother using it. I had no idea boarding was such a workout. Your lungs will feel it as there's less oxygen in the air, so you might want to take it easy to adjust when you first go up. Still recovering after the second day back. My forearms (from getting up all the time) and chest (perhaps from falling down funny) were killing me. Other areas of pain: knuckles, knees, and sore thighs. RENTALS If you do get there later and need a rental, wait till 12:30pm and rentals for boots and snowboard is $25 instead of $30. One particular fall I had caused one of the foot bindings to shift awkwardly. Had to go back to the rental place, which took forever as a family was ahead of me getting skis and there was only one guy at that section of the store. *ugh* Eventually though, he just handed me a new board. CROWDS Yeah for weekdays! There were still a lot of people up there, but certainly not enough to have a huge crowd see me flop down the slopes all the time. We arrived there before 11am and had to hike up pretty far from where we parked to get to the check-in area. SCENERY It's a lovely spot for taking photos, though your light meter will often be thrown off since there's so much white in the area. As a result, a lot of your photos may end up being darker than you'd like. My advice is to take closeups if you can. If you have a "snow" or "facial recognition" setting on your camera, use it. I just got lazy with my point-and-shoot, so I'll just be editing my pics in post. RESTAURANT LODGE They have a place to get burgers up there, though it gets crowded. It's a good place to get out of the elements and use the restroom facilities. I'm sure I would enjoy this place more as I develop my skills. We'll see. You're done with your morning surf session and ready to move on to the next activity. Why not go skiing? Located just over an hour's drive from Los Angeles, Mount Baldy boasts the most convenient slopes in the area. But get ready for an experience. From the crushed beer cans marking a path from the parking lot to the main lift, you know you're in for a wild ride. This is not a place for the resort-loving, fussy skier. You won't see people strolling around in meticulously coordinated Ralph Lauren ski outfits here or sipping Godiva hot cocoa in front of the lodge's fireplace. The "resort" area is a small structure where you can rent equipment (downhill skis and snowboards), relieve yourself in one of two bathrooms (the women's looked as though it hadn't been used in years, or cleaned, and the counters were slippery when wet), or feast on greasy burgers at the restaurant (no frills and musty). My sister and I refer to this place as "Dude Baldy" simply because we ran into no other girls while we skied there. The guys here are serious about skiing--quite hardcore and tough looking, though everyone was nice. I learned to ski here. The instructor simply stood at the bottom of a hill and said "now, come this way." I glided over and promptly fell down near his feet (he didn't help me up or pity me). After a few more tries though I got the hang of things enough for several enjoyable runs on the easier slopes. While convenient, don't expect to be coddled here or eased into skiing if you're new. The weather was fine until there was a sudden white out--which I hear happens frequently up there. Because commercial development at Dude Baldy is minimal, the landscape feels wild and far removed from city life. This is what I appreciate about the place the most. If I can give 1 star maybe I would, but this place was supposed to be the escape after being to Mt High and Big Bear for my birthday, all places were closed due to strong winds. As we pulled up at Mt Baldy, we're even shocked to see there's not even any snow on January in Mt Baldy, could you believe that? So, it was even shocker to see great reviews about this place on Yelp. Was I there during the bad time or what? I believe by January there should be snow, no?! Looking at the terrain, it even scares me, because there's no snow, so you could see pretty clear, let's say when you get lost, you could go down the cliff and to the street. This park is so darn small, it's actually scaring me out! I already gave Mt High a star, if I can give this half of a star, I would. There should be a sign before heading up to the mountain if the park is closed completely so people don't waste time... tsk tsk tsk! read more

If you've never been to Mt. Baldy you're in for a treat, er....experience. On my recent trip there wasn't much snow and 3 lifts were open; the main lift from the parking lot up to the mountain and it was a miserable and very slow ride on ancient chairs. I seriously thought it might fail at any time. The 2nd lift open takes you to ski-able runs, that's it. The third lift only gets you back to the lodge and the main lift down. The upside is the distance from home. It only took me 45 minutes door to door. The other upside is there are no crowds or lines. So if you can "rough it" a little you'll have much of the mountain to yourself with little or no traffic. This place is not for beginners! I'd avoid the rentals and the food if you can. Bring a backpack with your own food and drinks. If the lower portion of the mountain is not ski-able I recommend leaving at or before 3 pm. I would agree with Brent D's review on 1/18/13 read more

Very friendly ski resort staff from lift operators to the rental workers. Trust me, friendly staff makes your snow day much more enjoyable since we all ski/snowboard to relax and enjoy our day off. Closest ski resort from LA and the drive is not that bad. Beautiful landscape and just below the resort and side of it are hiking trails. It's a small place but since it's not overcrowded compared to Mnt High which makes its fun and more enjoyable. People you share the mountain with also makes you love or hate your day, I rather come to Mount Baldy than go to Mnt High because of the type of crowd. Only problem is the mountain don't get good snow much and they don't have a lot of snow machines, but if you time your trips with carefully planned weather you will have a blast. Went here for the skiing. Pre-purchased a lift ticket from Liftopia and got on the slopes for $35 for the entire day. It was about 4 days after a large storm that had dumped 25" of snow. They had two runs well groomed and I stayed on them the entire day. Unfortunately, by the end of the day, my nice skis both had core shots from rocks. The staff was excellent, the lines are nonexistent and the view was spectacular. However, damaging my skis while staying on the only two groomed runs didn't make me happy. Would I go back there again? Hell yes! But it would have to be right after a large dumping of snow. Waiting 4 days left the coverage a little thin even though I stayed on the two groomed runs from lift 3. All in all, it was a great day. Fun and relaxing for sure. read more

after waiting in line for 2 hours to get down (there was not enough snow to ride to the lot), I feel like I came close to having my toes frostbit.... they really should have prepared better, closed the lifts earlier maybe, or at least posted signs on what to expect. not enough flood lights either for operating in the dark, they're very lucky if no one was hurt. I will never go back after that experience. There was no crowd control on the line either, so groups of people were able to hang out in the bar, while taking turns standing in line with their buddies then jumping back in line a head of others who were waiting forever. not fair to the singles who had to stay in line the whole time. I would have gladly walked to the lot if there were flood lights on chair #1. instead of making snow for the terrain park that nobody rides, they could actually make sure there is a snow covered run to the parking lot. Can't beat the price. Skiied today for $14.99 (liftopia advance ticket). Only 2 lifts open (beginner and Mullin's Mile for intermediate/expert) - icy until sun warmed them up some. Had place to myself. Employees very friendly (esp Jake in rentals), ski operators, lodge folks. And the views were great! This is a good place to go for snowboarding and skiing, esp. for first timers like me. The place is really beautiful, you wouldn't think that you are just an hour away from LA. We took our four year old twins tubing here yesterday, and although we had fun, we won't be going back anytime soon. First of all, it was expensive. It cost $120 for three adults, two kids and one infant just to ride the chairlift to the top and back. On top of that, we had to pay $40 for two adults and two kids to go tubing. The main reason we won't be going back, though, is the chairlift ride to the top. It seems incredibly dangerous for little kids. It is very old and rickety, and I was white-knuckled the entire ride up and down, worrying that my kids might fall the three to four stories to the rocks below. read more

I'm no professional or frequent skier/snowboard-er, so keep that in mind when you read my review. I'm in Hollywood, and this place is nice and convenient...doesn't take as long to get here as it does to big bear. Also, it felt like less of a winding road to me. So Mt. Baldy....you park your car, pay for the ski lift, and be prepared for a 15 minute ride to the snow. If you fear heights, you've been warned! (But then again, you're gonna ride a ski lift at any other place you go to). I liked the ride up; it really prepares you and gets you ready for the fun ahead of you. Since I was there early in the season, there was only one slope open. They call it the beginner's slope, but I beg to differ. I am a beginner and I definitely had some trouble with it. Nevertheless, I still had fun and was glad it wasn't too far away! I recommend coming early. I was in by 10 and done by 2pm. By 2p.m., every ski lift coming up to the mountain was full! And this was on X-mas day....imagine a weekend day! Happy snow day! read more

I was pretty impressed by the restaurant and the ski lifts. I decided to hike this mountain for the 5th time, hoping to reach the top of Mt. Baldy (for the 5th time) but was unfortunately turned back due to the lack of proper snow equipment. I have hiked this mountain in snow before, but the recent downpour of El Nino has left this mountain completely covered in snow, and great for snowboarding and skiing. That being said, the fresh snow made it incredibly hard for hikers to walk through knee and sometimes waist deep snow. I decided to take the route to the ski lift from the trail head because it was the safer route than Baldy Bowl Rd. Upon making it to the Ski Lifts my friends who were not adequately equipped with waterproof shoes, were freezing their feet off, on top of cramping from not being use to mountain hiking. So we entered the restaurant where we enjoyed a fulfilling lunch and a beer, and decided that for their sake (their frozen feet's sake) that it was best we took the one way ticket down the mountain. The 1 way ticket down the mountain was $12 dollars and it was an exciting experience. The ski lift is a double seater and it was exciting to record the snowboarders going down the slopes. It was an exciting day. Great staff too. read more

The view on the lift ride was amazing!! The tubing was fun and the workers that ran the tubing were very nice. The down side was the man telling people where to park was super rude to people. Definitely not representing the company very well. He was an older man that had a dog. He had the cars park on this hill that I wasn't sure about when he told me to park there ( my fault for not listening to my instincts ) and then I got stuck. Luckily three guys in a truck helped to get my car off the hill as well as helped a few other cars. All in all it was amazing and we will definitely be back. read more

Our tubing experience was a bit disappointing... I'm glad I bought our tickets with Groupon & saved a little otherwise it would be a waste of money! I'm not that experienced when it comes with Snowboarding. I've been about 4 or 5 times so far. I actually bought my own gear.. so maybe I'd start going more. But anyways. The bf and I started the season by going to Mt. High. Let me tell you, I didn't enjoy it one bit. It was horribly busy that day, so we had to park at the 2nd parking lot. Then the lines were like 30 minutes long to just buy our lift tickets. THEN waited for a bus to take us up to the West (?? I think), where the bunny slopes and such are. And the snow was crap. In general, I hated that day. We left after 2 hours. The next time we went snowboarding, our friend suggested Mt. Baldy because he'd been there as a kid, and he remembered loving it. The thing about going to Baldy is that you have to choose the right day, with the right conditions. NEVER go up DURING a storm. Never never never. It's icy, snowing, and has black ice! The drive up the mountain is bad enough without worrying about that stuff. We went a few days after a rain storm, so we knew there would be a fresh coat of powder still. The drive wasn't bad. We live in Fullerton. It took us only about 20 minutes to to get off the freeway, and another 20 to go through the town and up the mountain. We bought tickets and got up to the runs in no time! Their bunny slope is reaaallyy fun, and it was pretty fun for me to go down, despite being a beginner. The bf and his friend went down a bunch of other runs, including the black diamond one (I'm not sure of the name.. but they have awesome names for each run. Like the Rollercoaster!). Anyways. We stayed for most of the day. Starting out at about 9 or 10, and leaving at 3. Traffic wasn't even bad going home either! Got home in about 45 (: MUCH better drive than going to Mt. High. We're hoping to go to Mt. Baldy another two times or so before the season is over. It's supposed to rain this week! haha. Oh and fyi, at Skidazzle, you can buy the season pass (I think.. or maybe a day pass) for Baldy for about $10. We have a season pass this year, but next year we'll be picking some up at Skidazzle! I know this review was sort of all over the place, but if you like snowboarding (or skiing!), you should check this place out. I went there on Christmas day and it was chaos. Mountain was supposed at 4pm but at 3:45 they were still letting people take the lift to the lodge. I waited from 4:30 to 8:30 to be able to go down the lift. It was a real health hazard! people were panicking, kids crying. At least 100 people in line on the FREEZING cold weather. Staff was very nice, its really not their fault. line to bathrooms were about 30 min long. They dared to SELL trash bags to freezing cold children for a dollar. For real... We got stuck there and that trashy lift was the only way out. They ran out of everything. Even the hot water for my cup of noodle was not hot enough... A real day in hell. read more

Used the groupon for the ski lifts and tubing today for my son and I. Drove from Glendale, CA (about 1 - 1.5 hrs with no traffic). Bottom line: don't go there unless you like to get hurt and get scared. It was about 40 degrees with a 25 mph wind chill. The lift up and down is about 15 mins each way (which seems like forever, trust me). With a 25 mph wind chill and 40 feet above the ground, it's very scary and some of the seats on the ski lifts (including my son's) are BROKEN. yes, and to make it even worse, the lift sometimes stops abruptly. They told me at the top that they don't stop the lift operations until the winds hit 60 mph!!! That's totally insane! Also, for the tubing, we went down the hill literally just once as my son didn't like walking up the hill (Big Bear last year has rollers that you stand on to get back to the top). I slipped on the ice at the top of the tubing hill and slammed my cheekbone on my son's head very hard. Very unpleasant experience. But this happened last year (or similar falling/slipping) at Big Bear tubing as well. Do not go here. I would not go here again even if it was totally free. read more

The greatest thing is the distance. It is only one hour drive from LA including the mountain road part. You cannot beat that. It is much closer than Big Bear. We took the kids to go snow tubing during Martin Luther King weekend. There were a lot of people. They warned us the return lift would be a 2 hour wait, which probably is an hour. The tubing park is crowded and people do not want to pass along the tubes. How rude and selfish. But the kids love the snow and tubing. It is a little pricey though because you have to buy the scenice lift for $20 per person and tubing ticket for $15. It adds up fast. But I will go back just because it is so close and convinient. read more

I purchased a groupon for this place to use on MLK day, what's funny is I called twice to find information about redeeming the voucher. The gentleman who answered the phone confirmed that we could not bring our own sleds and that the voucher would be okay to use on a holiday. However, they did not mention anything about having to activate the voucher. Fast forward to MLK day it was pretty busy despite the fact that my family and I got there before 10am. After waiting in line for about 10-20 mins. the gentleman at the window says,"did you follow the directions?" I informed him that I called and no one said anything about activating anything. He continued to reprimand me,"why not?" "Next time we won't be able to honor this,etc." He was soooo rude!! Also, if the majority of your customers aren't following directions then maybe you haven't made them clear enough. Anywho mt.baldy was covered in snow!!!!! It was beautiful. I love how close it is to LA and that I didn't need any chains to get there. Cons: There's no sledding permitted so if you're a big family you have to settle for body sledding and snow fights. They have a reserved area for tubbing but it's $20.00 per adult and it's a really small area. They do have skiing and snowboarding but in order to participate in those activities you have to make sure you purchase those types of tickets before getting on ski lift. Or else you have to upgrade them at the restaurant, it just seems really unorganized. Overall: It's obviously not a 5 star ski resort but it does do the trick if you want to experience a little winter wonderland. read more

ONE HOUR from my front door in S. Pasadena to the Baldy parking lot. ONE HOUR. Not an exaggeration. This place has decent runs for intermediate/advanced, and one giant bunny hill and a looooong skinny run for beginners. I am a 6th season beginner/intermediate skier, and balldy gives me the ability to go on my day off (usually a weekday) to just get some "quick" practice in. No this is not Mt High, and is not an augmented playground for snowborders... it is a peaceful, affordable, quaint, convenient, real mountain. I have never had a bad experience with the workers... in fact they usually seem really friendly. A downside is that they are not as high in altitude as big bear or mountain high... so when there is a snowfall, you gotta get there fast to enjoy it. They have specials on lift tickets before the season gets too far in, but I bought a season pass... why? Because it is ONE HOUR from my front door. Lifts are old, and almost scary, but it's old school... you gotta be tough and just suck it up. As far as the lines for the lifts, I have only once experienced a crowd... it was the first big snowfall of this season, and all the kids were still off of school for Christmas beak. I've seen a lot of mixed reviews about this resort, but I think the reality is your experience will vary a lot with who you end up working with and the mountain conditions. In my experience, I found the staff particularly understanding and helpful, especially Amy who helped me sort through a couple of clerical errors on my part. I felt her efforts went far above what I would've expected to accommodate me and my group. However, the resort has some pretty glaring inefficiencies, including but not limited to arduous wait times for rentals, a lot of things were closed, WiFi wasn't working, insufficient signage at the top, etc. In the end, your experience is what you make of it and my group still had a good time, but I think it could've been better. I was going to leave a 2 star rating, but Amy really made up for a lot of shortcomings of the resort. If you're planning to go, I'd definitely recommend brining your own gear to avoid their rentals. read more

The view is beautiful, and the people who are helping with the ski lift are nice. This review is mostly about the restaurant at the top of the mountain. We walked in and were ignored for about ten minutes, once we asked they told us we could sit where ever we like. After another 10 minutes of being ignored I had to go up to the bar to order food. I never once saw or spoke to our waiter. Even when we got our food someone else from the kitchen brought it out. It's a beautiful trip and can be a fun day, but maybe pack a lunch or don't expect great service. read more

We got a really good deal on lift tickets for Mt. Baldy ($18 per person) so we were very excited. Our 1st attempt was a total fail. 2 weeks ago was one of the largest snowstorms in years and our Lexus sedan was unable to make it up the hill even with chains. We were definitely bummed that we had to turn back without getting to snowboard but we were not going to give up. This morning, we piled back into the car but since conditions were completely different, we had no trouble getting to the ski area. Overall, the runs for beginners like us were limited and the entire ski resort is rustic and old. We rented snowboards and boots for $30 per day. It's a good thing we got there early because by noon, the snow had started to melt. By 2, we were ready to leave as the gravel underneath the snow was starting to be exposed in certain spots. In other places, the snow had turned into ice so when I fell, it no longer felt like I was sitting on a soft pillow but rather on a hard brick. I had a good time at a good price. If I had to pay more, I'd probably be pickier. read more

We're from out of country and just wanted to show our Aussie kids snow for the first time. Lovely scenic road in, beautiful warm welcome from the woman at the base carpark. Great so far. Slow, peaceful chairlift to the top, all good. Nice staff. But then we got to the tubing park, our main attraction for going. My family and another one who'd arrived for the 11.30-1.30 session ON THE OFFICIAL WEBSITE were told the session was now 12-2. That was no big deal, and the kids could entertain themselves for half an hour in the white stuff. But when we went back, they said 1PM! When we pointed out the discrepancies between the website, they simply said there were two different tube park managers and they decided day-to-day when each session would be. The stafff didn;t give a sh*t. The place was empty and they wouldn;t get off their seats - literally - to let four waiting kids have a go - "not unless you want to pay the full rate for the last ten minutes of the session". So we killed another hour - and were then told we had to walk back down to the restaurant to pay because their credit card machine couldn't be operated. We finally got on. The tube runs are tiny but enjoyable. It's hard work walking up after each one, and they were asleep in the car on the way home. They had a great time, but it's a super-shoddy operation and you should go prepared - or call ahead. Also the restaurant food is expensive and like a bad truckstop, and the locker room was a pigsty. But hey, we got to see snow and have a play, and were back home in LA by 6pm! Hope this review helps everyone. read more

Visited Mt. Baldy Sky Lifts on Friday January 8th. The experience was great. We showed up mid day and were amazed by the beautiful snow surrounding us. The sky lift staff is always very professional and friendly. The tubing slide is small and if you have small children the wait can get long but the kids enjoyed themselves. Plenty of space for snow play. The kids went on the tunes about 6 times. Best time to go is mid day for us from like 10-2. The only downer is that on our way down the sky lift stopped for about 25 minutes, which was very uncomfortable and cold mainly for my kids who were done. Overall, great experience. For all the people complaining, look around and enjoy mother nature in all its glory. It's breathtaking. read more

Since the change in upper management Mt. Baldy has lost the charm and the connection to their customers. They stop allowing the rollover your unused passes.it been 3 years of this and I got tired of throwing my money away. They do not honor online discounts if the customer wishes to pay the mountain directly. I received an email from the new management basically saying its too bad after all these years Baldy support that my frustration has lead me not to want to come back. That was it. I would think some incentive to keep myself, family and friends would be included. They stated that if they connotes to roll over passes like they used to that they would go out of business. I think not taking care of your customers who share with everyone they know about how great the small Baldy resort is will be the cause of their failure. read more

First time up on Mt Baldy...once the snow softened up, it was a gorgeous day! Pretty much every trail was open and the coverage was great! Locals were saying that mountain hasn't been covered like that in over 10 years. If you are a beginner-intermediate boarder or skier, this is the perfect place to start out. Get there early and get the best parking. And get there before the families that just go to see the snow for the first time and to go tubing. read more

Last weekend was probably the best weekend for snow at any of the resorts. We had one whole week of rain but the weekend was clear (and sunny!!!) Unfortunately bear mtn and summit were closed which left So Cal to divvy up between Mt Baldy and Mt High. Mt Baldy is typically a 45 minute drive from LA (where I met up with friends) but on this particular weekend - it took us 5 hours. We anticipated getting to the mountain by 8:00. We reached the base at 7:30 and didn't make it to the ticket window until 12:30. Chains were required causing traffic, and also, their parking lot filled up so we had to hike after doing some street parking below. They definitely had the altitude for GREAT snow! So the drive and hike were worth it. Also - I interacted with 2 really great workers there 1 who adjusted my bindings and 1 who co-taught my friend's snowboarding class. But the lift operators and one of the boot rental guys were rude. They just didn't have patience for beginners but I didn't let that dampen the day 'cause the snow was awesome! Bottom line - this place has great snow when there's snow but if you're a beginner (and especially if you are a snowboarder) you will probably want to go to Bear or Mt High. read more
