I really wish we had such a store in Las Vegas. It has everything and more one would need for all their asian necessities. They have aisles per Korean, Japanese, Filipino, etc... This store saves you from having to drive from store to store for your asian goodies. The prices are pretty decent In comparison to what I see. But, I've learned...you will always pay a price when it comes to.imported goods. They have all the frozen food, as well as a butcher with lots of seafood and meat to choose from. The store is clean, big aisles, lots to choose from...be aware because you must bring your own bags to bag your groceries. If not, either load your grocery into your cart or ask to buy their recycle bags for .95 cents each. These are pretty big bags that can hold a whole lot of groceries so if you forgot a bag, it's pretty worthed. At least it's reusable. Go green! read more

Stopped by the store after visiting Baguette House. The supermarket is much larger than the few Asian markets I've been to in San Antonio. The facility was clean with lots of fresh-looking produce. I love bringing white people with little food culture to this place. It's a smorgasbord of asian ingredients that never ceases to be a food education. Some of the fun items? Duck tongues, chicken feet and chicken feet...no bones! You can buy extra beef bones to make stock with, the butcher will slice pork butt for your bun cha that evening and there's a live stock tank where you can grab live fish. If I'm looking for asian ingredients like soy sauce, odd produce like chinese brocolli, asian long beans, different varieties of rice or sauces this is the place to go. Just wandering the isles is fun for me. Anything I might buy in bulk like rice, soy sauce, fish sauce or rice noodles, ramen are very inexpensive and usually fresher than from other sources. Go. Best place in Austin to stock up on Asian ingredients. In addition to stocking more than you'll find anywhere else, MT also has the lowest prices on things like sriracha, soy sauce, rice noodles, etc. Very spacious and very clean! Also very well organized, especially compared to a lot of Asian markets. Prices can be hard to find sometimes. They're usually on the shelves, but can easily be missed. You just have to look closely! Surprisingly good produce section, too! Very fresh, and great selection. I especially love being able to buy heaps of fresh lemongrass! It's a trek to get here from the south side, but well worth it to stock the pantry for several months at a time. read more

I usually do not give bad reviews, but i have been getting consistently bad service here. Sad, but not many options in Austin for Asian markets. Very high prices compared to other Asian markets in other cities I have lived in. Over the years i have learned not to ask for help. I have also stopped ordering seafood from the counter as they do not always follow first come rules. During check out my groceries are thrown into my cart without consideration. Hana is my favorite market, and, like Hana it has that typical Asian Market smell, you know, fish. I like the fish at MT better because their tanks look a lot cleaner than those at Hana, and, they're not near as crowded. Both stores are equally impressive. I basically live next door to the MT Supermarket and the Chinatown center that it is a part of. Its pretty amazing. My sister and I went in looking for some spicy chili garlic sauce and ended up wandering around the wonderful maze that is MT. They have about a bazillion types of fresh ( and live) fish. They have many Asian delicacies at really good prices. Although I must admit to being quite separate from the Asian food culture ( I'm more of a take out girl myself,) I could see that the selection was extensive. The market has been packed to the gills since day one! Warning. It smells STRONGLY of fish here. I do go in from time to time, but can't stay too long because of the smell. read more

Disclaimer: I am Chinese and grew up near Dallas, where the asian presence in nearby Plano and Richardson is ten fold what it is in Austin. And I've frequented Houston as well. MT is the only place in Austin where I can get stuff for a good homecooked meal. 'American' supermarkets are prim and glossy, but cannot match asian markets in terms of freshness. Yeah, you could buy the cleaned and perfectly cut frozen catfish filet at HEB, or watch one of the MT guys fish a live one out of the tank, kill, gut, clean, and bag it right in front of you. And the produce is fresh if you go earlier in the day/week. I'm sure to most other people, it's massive and an enjoyable cultural experience. When I bring other friends here they always point and ask what certain items are, and I can rarely give them a straight answer because I don't know if there's even an english name for it. To me, I'm just shopping for groceries and there isn't anything amazing about the place. In fact I find it a bit lacking in terms of what they offer, and I really miss the bakery and fast food sections I grew up with in other asian markets. But, it's all I have here in Austin and I'd definitely be depressed if it weren't there. read more

The mecca of Asian supermarkets. With this store combining Asian produce from many different countries, I really don't see a reason to go anywhere else. I haven't found an Asian supermarket in Austin that comes even close to what MT offers in selection. The space is clean, and the aisles are organized fairly well, although I had trouble finding some items which turned out to be on endcaps (like tamarind paste). Things that I especially appreciate from here include an amazing selection of fresh produce, non-refrigerated rice noodles (on a rack near the back of the produce section), and a ridiculous selection of Asian desserts. Holy god. One tip: do check the expiration dates on your canned goods, as with any cans. I did run into some bamboo shoots on the shelves that had just passed their expiration. read more

Eeew. Those of you who think 'size is everything'- not so here. And I think thats part of the problem. Not only does this place reek of Canal street, but the proportion of the store to size /goodness is way off. I think when you have a HUGE section, it's critical to keep it fresh. Every time I see something cool, upon closer inspection, it's wilted, limp and past it's prime. We dont want a Tilapia thats been swimming around 14 other DEAD Tilapia in the tank. Get a net and scoop 'em out before you open. Same with the Chinese cabbage. I know you have a fucking mountain of it, but most of it is wilted. Grab a bottle of fish sauce- only to grab a dusty bottle that expired 3 months ago. I could go on and on... Also, this is run like a big box. The staff are droned out and don't know anything. Amazing. So much variety. I love walking through here and seeing so many things I have never even heard of (Pan Dan cake) and things that I have heard of for much cheaper than anywhere else. Don't be afraid to ask questions and be adventurous. Also try the Pan Dan cake, I have no idea what it is but it tastes like I am eating a cloud! It is right by the registers on the pastry table. It's always a Taylor Swift concert at MT Supermarket. They love to play country music in the background. This is a good place to go grocery shopping for Asian foods. The Asian foods here are generally cheaper than other grocery stores. They usually have what I need and the items are easy to find. My only complaint is that a lot of items don't have price marks on them. It's not until you go to the cash register that you know how much it is which can be inconvenient. read more

Pretty much the only Asian super market in town that has what you would want all in one location. It's the standard Asian super market with the produce section and the fish market in the back with the meat dept. Large variety of Asian foods and you can get sauces and spices for every kind of Asian meal. Korean, Chinese, Vietnamese, etc... Only draw back to the store is well they know they are the major player in the Asian supermarket game in Austin so the prices are a bit on the higher side. I say that coming from either DFW or Houston where there are a lot of Asian super markets and there is some what price competition. I'm with Teri R. on this one - the place smells of rotted fish when you enter the door -- however, if you can pinch your nose closed long enough to get through the entry and into the store, a world of untold delights awaits replete with tons of packaged goods with amusing english translations. I really felt like a tourist. Loved all the cookware and kitchen items - if you're ever making a stirfry for 100 people, they have woks as big as jacuzzis. I also finally found the fabulous porcelain dishes I've been searching for high and low. Big bowls perfect for rice or noodle dishes. Yep. Awesome. Oh, and I was amused that they have no less than four aisles dedicated to asian candies and cookies. Found my gummies and lychee hardcandies. Yum! And moshi. Double happiness! I have faith they will get rid of the awful odor in the entry - I don't see how they'll stay in business if they dont, honestly. I've never seen such a clean and comprehensive Asian supermarket. This place has just about everything you need to make East Asian cuisine, from the obscure spices and vinegar to random snacks like green tea kit kat. What stands out to me is how clean this place is. You can walk past the fish section and not notice the smell. The produce is neatly arranged in an orderly fashion and presumably they discard everything that is rotting as well. It comes at a price though. Comparable goods at 99 Ranch would cost at least 30% less in SoCal and I would assume Dallas and Houston as well. We've just recently moved to Austin from Hawaii, and of course being the Asian/Hawaiian girl I am, getting some "staples" was imperative. Through Yelp, we discovered this "little" gem of a supermarket, and it really lived up to expectations. It's pretty far away from where we live (~5 miles, which does feel like a lot coming from our Island State) so I wanted to make the most out of our trip and stock up so we wouldn't have to return too frequently. But I already want to go back, as soon as I find recipes that can utilize all the amazing ingredients I saw in aisle after aisle of this giant supermarket/warehouse store. It's true - everything's bigger in Texas, and I'm glad that Asian markets are no exception. In fact, there were so many items there that I don't think are even available in Chinatown or Asian markets in Hawaii, which was a pleasant surprise. The best, of course, was locating Aloha brand shoyu and other products. I didn't expect that, so far away from home! But it really confirms that MT has pretty much everything you could ever want. I would definitely warn people that the organization seemed... very laissez faire, let's say that. It really reminded me more of some of the flea market style shops I saw when I was visiting China, more than a Western-style supermarket. It takes some time to compare prices, since not every brand of the same kind of product is in the same aisle, and the aisle labeling isn't always accurate. It was our first trip (being unfamiliar and looking for a LOT of different stuff) but it did take over an hour to find everything we needed, although I was also taking my time so we didn't miss anything. I wouldn't recommend going on a tight timeframe for your first trip, though. At the very least you'll be tempted to explore every aisle just because there are so many unique items available. I do account it somewhat to the thunderstorm that happened to brew while we were shopping, but I agree that the parking lot was not the most organized I've ever seen. It's definitely a cultural thing - many Asian cultures just don't have the same social guidelines for driving, and I'm sure that's the case here as well. I've been coming to MT since it first opened, and LOVE the place. Before MT, I had to go to smaller grocery stores & even order some things online cause you just couldn't find them anywhere. Now, MT pretty much serves all my needs, although I do still like going to the various smaller groceries around town for different items. I especially love the chinese long beans, which is very hard to find anywhere other than MT. My local HEB had them for awhile but quit carrying them, arrgh! I also enjoy the different veggies when I'm making a special recipe. And of course, they have chicken and even duck feet! My grandson is CRAZY about chicken feet, so it's cool to be able to buy them & make at home . I also enjoy the fresh tofu, and normally the bean sprouts are also very fresh. I like to get a big bag of them, and in the summer I actually just salt, pepper & a bit of lemon & eat them raw as a snack. Oh and MT is the only place I've every found the special kind of pepper I need for Sichuan cooking, they have the dried ones there, the bigger red ones kind of shaped like a triangle. I actually now prefer to use fresh Fresno peppers (which I get from Central Market), because I never could get the dried ones, & had to keep trying different peppers til I found a good substitute. Matter of fact, the Fresnos look like a fresh version of the dried ones I get. MT also has the Sichuan dried "prickly ash" peppercorns which I love. Used to have to order those online, and for a few years, even THAT was impossible, as they had an import ban on them. It was almost like doing black market deals to get hold of them, LOL! Thank goodness we can now get them again :) I also buy Thai loose tea at MT, it's sold in bags & is so yummy. All you have to do is brew it, add your 1/2 & 1/2 and some ice. And wouldn't be a complete trip until I've bought my Pandan bars, YUM! They actually sell fresh pandan leaves in the veggie section, one of these days I need to learn how to make Pandan cake with them :) read more

You know how to make Pho? Well I do now thanks to this place. Talk about non-traditional Christmas dinner... I put myself through a 9 hour process perfecting the perfect Pho broth. I wouldn't have been able to even come close without all the ingredients and helpful staff at MT. I also found their prices to be cheaper than HEB on core items for my broth. Although I don't have much new to say, I am updating this review to explain that this is the "M T" supermarket, but by no means, the "Empty" supermarket. hahahaha. Ok, now that I have that out of the way... (I think I stole that from another Yelper. Sorry about that, but it is priceless and cracks me up every time.) I love buying fresh whole fish here. The nice guys at the counter will pick you out a nice whole fish, clean and scrape the scales off of it and then score it ready for frying or steaming. So easy! I bought a lovely bass the other day and it was only about $5 - I steamed it with ginger and green onion and it was fabulous. The veggies are great, with a much better variety than your local HEB/Randalls and priced much better. Good variety of fresh and dried mushrooms. Fresh and frozen durian readily available. Lots of different kinds of rice by the giant bag. There are few things I can't get here which puzzles me. Although there are a gazillion noodles, there are no thin fresh chinese noodles, or hand made and cut noodles. Also -- no good frozen won ton. I haven't liked a lot of the frozen dumplings I've gotten, although there is a giant variety. I also could not find yellow bean paste, but that could have just been me. And I would sure like to see a better variety of the instant noodle bowls using non-fried rice noodles, which is a staple in other Chinese markets. That's right, you don't have to eat top ramen - there are actually healthy noodle bowls that are pretty fat free. Also - baked goods would be nice. What with the scarcity of Chinese bakeries in this town? Also - no dried bonito flakes (OK, thats really a Korean thing, I can get those at the Korean markets in town. The MT supermarket (haha, see, I did it again) is the only place to come for your fresh veggies and fruits, though. Can't wait for the fresh lychee season. YUM! read more

Austin is limited on Asian supermarkets so this is one of the few choices. Not comparable to the supermarkets in Houston. The produce is usually fresh and the fish and meat are bearable. There is a good variety of everything. The store also carries baked goods and Vietnamese desserts in the front when you enter. They can either be a miss or hit. The only complaint i have in peculiar is the taro. It's incredibly hard to find taro in Austin so I always come to MT supermarket but it's either covered with mold or rotting. I've came home with rotton taro so many times, which is annoying because they don't come cheap. Don't expect any of the staff to know where anything is. I've asked for help before and it would be easier to find the item on your own. Don't get me wrong, the staff are nice and respectful. read more

I love this place. It's very reminiscent of the Hong Kong Supermarket in Houston (by far the largest Asian market in Texas). The only thing this place is missing is a deli that makes fresh barbecued pork buns and dim sum. I like browsing grocery stores in general, you never know when they're going to start stocking something new. This place has a wide array of produce, and they usually always have lotus buds that look like those pods from Invasion of the Body Snatchers, jack fruit the size of toddlers, and shitakes on steroids. I really don't like that it's so far away. I find myself going to the Hong Kong Supermarket (the Austin one) just out of convenience. If I could hold anything against the MT Supermarket, it would be that they charge an extra $1 for a pound of baby squid. read more

As an Asian -- this is one of the best Asian supermarkets I've ever been to. (And I've been to a lot.) I was pleasantly surprised by how clean, neat and orderly everything was, and by the prices. It's a great and cheap place to pick up fresh meat or fish (if you're not grossed out by the displays or the fact that they kill the fish right before they hand it to you). I wish it wasn't so far away from me, but it's a sacrifice I'm willing to make once in awhile to stock up on essentials like fresh tofu, bamboo shoots, and hard-to-find asian veggies. I love love love this place! You can pretty much get all the ingredients you would need for most Asian cuisines, and that's saying a lot. Plus, fresh seafood! I used to live in Los Angeles and New York, where quality Asian supermarkets abound, I have to say, this is one of the better Asian markets I've been to in America. The place is so clean and spacious, a BIG plus for Asian markets overseas. Most markets I've gone to in the past usually focus on one region or cuisine, but this one aims to encompass them all. Ambitious. Though they're not nearly as well stocked in Japanese and Korean ingredients as they are in Taiwanese and Southeast Asian selections, but I commend the effort! But if you just have to have that particular brand of anchovy sauce, go to the Korean market. The key is to know what you're looking for. A lot of the products are actually repackaged for the US, so the graphics may not look the same but all the words on them are. I found more than one brand of fermented glutinous rice and salted bamboo shoot in chili oil....What?! I am satisfied! The sheer variety of products offered can be overwhelming. If you're just browsing or don't know exactly what you're looking for, it's easy to get sidetracked. I've seen people wandering around looking lost and confused, or just following their friend or significant other around the market in a daze. The staff really aren't there to give guided tours. Also, the turnaround time for some of the produce could be a little more efficient, namely in the squash and root families, minor point. Their leafy greens, on the other hand - great selection and very fresh. (They have water spinach!) All in all, if you know what you're getting and you don't believe that shopping in Asian grocery stores have to mean narrow isles and overcrowded spaces, then this is the place to come. If I lived right around the corner, this would be the only place I'd need go to for all my grocery needs, not just those specialty items. They seriously have everything. read more

The Asian big box supermarket has finally reached Austin - no longer do austinites have to drive to Houston for live fish and shell fish products. It is the anchor of Austin's Chinatown center - a 100,000+ sq foot shopping plaza. this follows the same format as most new Chinatown shopping centers - a big box supermarket and several spots for stores - videos, a travel agent, jewelry stores, cell phones, noodle houses, herbalists, a Chinese BBQ place, a Vietnamese sandwich shop, and a various casual to serve yourself dining places are scheduled to open... Its fairly new so the other stores especially the restaurants are still building out there spaces so you'll probably have to wait several weeks for these places to open. read more

Everyone from Austin knows that there are only a few places where you can go to shop for asian foods and this is definitely one of the good ones. VENUE: Your typical asian market so when you walk in you WILL smell mothballs and fish. Gross to some, nostalgia to me. Overall i think the place is pretty clean. There are some asian markets that will have tons and tons of flies just hovering around all the meats and fish and its so gross but this place has kept the creepy crawlers to a minimum. FOOD: They have just about everything to prepare any asian dish - even Filipino, Thai, etc. sauces and fruits. I just went to MT Supermarket again yesterday. What fun! I got a 10" diameter bamboo steamer (that fits perfectly in my 10 1/2" and 2" deep skillet), a Vietnamese style bamboo hat (to keep sun out of my face when sunbathing, a new habit on warm days to get the Vitamin D donchano), a couple cans of coconut milk for the cheapest anywhere in town that I know of (Mae Ploy and the one with AOK in the middle of the name are the best), some rice noodles and a fun and exotic treat. I love the dishes there (the glass ones anyhow), and there are so many exotic things to look at I always feel I am taking a mini vacation when I go there. I'm giving them a 5 stars because its to me akin to going to Disneyland, but the fact is I don't buy things with MSG (that knocks off most of the packaged soups there) or from China (too much in the news of poisonous stuff in the Chinese imports). This place is BIG and I know I have quite a few visits ahead of me before I'll feel like I have looked at just about everything new I could. This place is great. I bring friends from out of town here, whether or not they have Asian markets where they're from. We love the inexpensive produce (we make mango salsa, often from the mangoes bought inexpensively here, along with the onions, cilantro and hot peppers). I get my tofu, and he gets his dried squid. We stock up on frozen dumplings and bao to steam easy dinners. There's always something new to see, something different to try. My camera phone records some of the humorous product names, like "Peanuts smelling in garlic and salt." It's the kind of place you can spend hours in, every time you go. There's always something you missed last time. But now we can make our own Pho, hot and sour soup, and other Asian noodle, stir fry and curry dishes. read more

I really dig this place. First, I LOVE the fact that all Chinese markets smell the same no matter where you are in the country.... Second, I love the fact that I can get a box of really good Green Tea for $.79 that's right folks...under $1 for delicious green tea! I also like the fact that I can get 25 lbs of Jasmine rice there for under $20. One the more adventerous side, I managed to get some of the seasonings for the Chinese BBQ and Duck. I am very interested in trying them, and no MSG! The last thing that I love more than anything is walking down the fish and meat counter and seeing things in the case you would never see at an American shop. Chicken feet, duck feet, duck head, pork butt... Oh...the highlight was seeing some frozen green bean popsicles. I'm not impressed with MT market. Produce were pricey and seemed old and stale compared to other mainstream markets like Randall's or Sprouts. For instance, you can get cauliflower for less at Sprouts. A lot of the fish are frozen and looks to have been frozen for weeks. It's a decent place to get fish sauce or other items that you might have a hard time finding at other markets. I suppose for some, this place is as close to what they can get to a 99 Ranch or maybe because a lot of Asians go here that it's the real deal. But when a place sells low quality produce at a high price, I'd avoid it. read more

I went to MT Market after a frustrating day of trying to find snow-crab legs SOMEWHERE at a Chinese food restaurant in austin. After finding none, I figured I'd buy them fresh and cook them myself, thinking "well, if any place has snow crab legs, it'll be the largest Asian food market in Austin, right?" Nope. ...But they do have just about everything else you could imagine, (plus a lot of stuff you never would have imagined.) I picked up all kinds of sauces, noodles, etc. ...just wish they'd had those snow crab legs. Ah, well. Oh, and the fresh fish market in the back is something to behold. ...and smell. If you're expecting "Asian" to include Japanese, do not have high expectations. Also, for the record, when others mention "Asian supermarkets to "smell" like this", do not include Japanese supermarkets to smell like that either, because it doesn't (maybe I'm wrong, but I've never visited Japanese supermarkets that had aroma that leaves impression about it). Japanese foods are scarce but they are scattered. I've found most in the "International" section. Also abundant choices of Japanese treats, they even sell classic ramune there as well (I think it was about $1.50/bottle) and even sweet mochi based okashi. I couldn't find any taiyaki or dorayaki, but I'm not too fond of sweets so I did not look hard. Please do not get me wrong, I think it is worth it to go there for shoppers to purchase Botan Calrose (short grained) Rice. It is about $5 cheaper there as compared to Walmart and HEB (and sometimes, they're sold out, so MT is a sure bet to carry Calrose). And I mostly go there to pick up short grained rice. You can also find varieties of Japanese curry and mabo-tofu roux (sp?) since I'm not much of a cook and that's the flavor I am used to. Speaking of being used to the flavors, one of my Japanese friend likes QP Mayonnaise, but I didn't find it there, so if you want QP, you have to go to Asahi Imports instead (again, I may be wrong, I did not look hard enough, maybe they do carry it). read more

A lot can change in 4 to 5 years. Since I am more comfortable in an Asian market I raised it up a star. The produce selection is very cheap. The fish department seemed a lot cleaner, no upside down fish in tanks. It is quite hard to find things for newbies, u can end up walking back and fourth across the store. This asian supermarket has everything but almost having nothing. I came from college station, tx. MT market does not have what i need, like buns. I have more varieties to select in the bcs food market in college station. The price is also not so low as justgo market at houston chinatown. I am kind of disappointed. I really wished I hadn't failed foreign language in school (or Rosetta Stone) I really wish it didn't feel so WRONG to ask the closest Asian to translate. I really wish I knew the go-to brands to choose when shopping here... I LOVE this place... I love the "what is that??" smell you get in every Asian market I have ever been in, the "is-that-what-I-think-it-is" I get when I DO find something that resembles what I am looking for... Meat, Seafood, Veggies, oh my! (its like a Far East HEB) The store is huge and has just about everything... I didn't buy nearly enough!! I will be back! read more
