I have been a customer at Gandhi Bazaar for almost 2 years since we moved here from New Jersey. I see that their produce, especially vegetables are always fresh and clean. The staff is so courteous that if you ask for a specific item, they will personally take you to the right place and point out the item (not saying go to aisle 2 and look on your left or right). I think that's how customer service should be. Besides produce, they also carry a wide variety of other food products, like snacks, frozen food items and other miscellaneous iems. I came here all because I tried Uthappen and Sambar recently. I fell in love with the Sambar. Researched and found an authentic recipe. So many new ingredients that I didn't have. To find these items I searched Yelp. There were a few India markets, but most didn't have great reviews, Until Gandhi Bazar. So armed with my long list of ingredients, I head south on 183. Only a few people shopping so I could take my time. This market is much larger than I expected. Aisles were labeled for easy item findings. I was only there for perhaps 5 minutes when a nice woman asked if she could help me find anything. I told I wanted to try on my own first. She smiled and nodded and said if you change your mind ask me. So I walked up and down every row looking for what I needed. My basket was filling up. I was in paradise with all these new ingredients. Oh, did I mention the store smelled like incense, very nice. I was so pleased with myself for finding everything. Checked out and it only came to $32.00 versus pricing in Amazon was over $100.00 . I came here for something very specific (black salt for my tofu scrambles) and was mesmerized by all the items in the isles. I explored every aisle and saw so many different things from sauces to grains and beans to spice and snacks. Excellent small Indian grocery store with a lot of organic options (nearly all the lentils, spices, etc were organic) and the produce is really fresh. They also have curbside ordering right now. I picked up some dosa batter, curry leaves, a lot of lentils, fresh green beans, tomatoes, spices, gram flour, and some other things that are hard to find in other supermarkets. I really enjoyed the samosa and jalebi that I got here. They are located near the register. Yummy! I didn't snap a photo since it went straight into my belly...oopsy! This store has a variety of items and I really liked that they had a lot of prayer stuff. There is a lot to look at in here compared to other markets. The people who work there were really nice. Stumbled across this fairly large (bigger than the few others I've been to in Austin) Indian market. The store is very clean and organized and the staff is super nice and helpful. I only started cooking Indian food at home about a year and a half ago, so I'm still learning - and the gals working were more than happy to assist me with unfamiliar items. Apna has all of the main staples that I've used in the past, lots of pre-made curries and chutneys, an excellent spice selection of course, and even some imported from India items such as cookery and dresses. The produce selection is pretty limited and not very fresh; however, those are items I can get from my local grocer. Recommend. Apna Bazaar is a fair-weather vegetarian's paradise. You know the type: the newly-minted non-carnivores looking for variety when all those bagged hearts of romaine salads get boring. But if you've ever had Indian food, or are looking for something more exotic than Hamburger Helper and Wonder Bread, this place is awesome. My exposure to Indian food began with my Indian neighbors and continued with my Indian friends. Potato samosas (stuffed pastries) are my favorite; I stopped in for some today, but the man who runs the place said his wife won't make them until Friday. Fair enough, those things taste delicious. I can wait. Sometimes I have a craving for naan, and they have a good variety here, including whole wheat. There's a much more diverse selection of frozen dinners of some of the more popular Indian foods, but watch out--they may be vegetarian but they're just as fattening as their blander Lean Cuisine counterparts. Always check the nutrition facts. I picked up some baby eggplant (to stuff with nuts and rice), and this is where they have an assortment of turmeric to put in many recipes (I use it on cauliflower). There's plenty of fresh produce in a clean environment. I also browse the Indian DVDs they sell for $2.99. I can see why. I figured the character Srinivas was the guy on the front, but his involvement in a labor union and a convoluted marriage plot didn't jive with the picture of him smiling and giving the thumbs up over a smiling belly dancer. I have an open mind, but my experience with Indian cinema shall remain with Slumdog Millionaire and Monsoon Wedding. When I checked out, I got a bottled Fanta on an impulse. I love that the whole world loves Fanta but us (even those sassy Fantanas couldn't convince us). Big mistake: I think this Fanta was brewed from water straight from the Ganges. I didn't say anything to the friendly owner, I just threw it out once I left. I love Fanta, but not enough to spend the night crapping myself silly. I always notice at least two people popping in to buy coconut milk. Maybe I should try that instead. Apna Bazaar is quaint, tucked away, and clean; stop in if you're a South Asian cuisine aficionado or just wanting to try something different. Just don't get a Fanta. read more

We walked through the store looking for a middle eastern spice called Sumac, while we were on the hunt we saw lots of cool foods, some we knew and loved and some that were unfamiliar. As we headed out after failing to locate the illusive spice, a young lady asked if she could help us find anything, we mentioned the spice and she led us right to it. This is one of those grocery stores where I legitimately need a guide to take me through the aisles, pointing out all the Indian goodies I didn't know existed. I come by this ignorance honestly - growing up in small town south Texas didn't prepare me for the wonders of Indian food. But here I was, shopping for the ingredients for saag paneer for an Indian Tamale making party. That's another story. What you should know about this place is that it has rows and rows of all the Indian things. Chutneys and naans and samosas and chaat and these crazy delicious spicy pickles. There are like 10 kinds of paneer, 20 varieties of yogurt, fresh vegetables and garam masala by the bucketful. They even have water buffalo butter. WHAT IS THAT?? I don't know but I bet its super awesome. It's a drive if you're not up north but I'll make it any day for the simple joy of walking through and discovering a thousand things I need to try. read more

Stopped by Apna earlier today and George told me he is going to start serving food in the next few months (restaurant will be called Maharaja and open 1st week of May). Said he's from Goa (which is a very cool resort, beach area of India) and the food will be similar to what you'd find in that part of India. Lots of seafood, I expect. A very small Indian grocery store- stocking up items for some minimal need but certainly old produce. Can't go shopping here for produce or even a large variety of indian frozen food like paranthas etc.- they have it but just some basic items. On way out, I got tempted to buy the fresh roti(12 in a foil) and fresh thepla(4 in the packet)- BIG MISTAKE! The roti(breads) were kind of partially uncooked and thick- didn't look like an experienced chapati maker had made those. Same with thepla- too thick and strange smell- very different from how they are made at home. So- I am not buying thsoe $6 for 12 roti and $3 for 4 thepla ever again! read more

What a treasure of a store in Northwest Austin. This is the place to come for yogurt drink, plain or mint. Their prices are very reasonable. This is the place to come for plain yogurt. It is fresh, generous, and ready to top with whatever you prefer. This is the place to come for those amazing Metal Indian lunch boxes that you thought you only saw in the Bollywood movies. From Tea to cookies to amazing lentils, to fresh vegetables to everything in between. I can't imagine how this neighborhood would suffer if the store were ever to leave. read more

I don't have much experience going into other Indian markets, but as a market in general, they are one of the friendliest. Last weekend I went to go buy some naan from the frozen/refrigerated section. The girl behind the corner immediately came over to see if I needed any help. This wasn't the first time that this has happened either. The last few times I've been to this market, someone has been very helpful in deciding what to get. On top of that, they gave tips on to how to prepare the food. That's great service! Also, their homemade samosas and chutney are amazing. Recently a close friend brought an interesting skincare fact to my attention. Apparently my beloved Jurlique refreshing toner/spray was largely comprised of alcohol. I'm a skincare fanatic; I will spend whatever is necessary to maintain the quality of my skin and over the years I've gotten very good at it. I adjust my skincare whenever my skin needs seem to be changing. For the last year I've tried to use products that contain less alcohol (it can't be helped with regular toners, I tried one alcohol free toner and I actually broke out on my cheeks.... And girl, I don't breakout on my cheeks EVER). Regardless, this led to my executive decision to cut my beloved Jurlique out. Well after extensive research I discovered you could buy PURE rosewater and create a facial mist as well! The hunt was on! I tracked down a highly recommended brand at this store. Everyone has different skincare requirements so if you're interested in creating a rosewater most for your face, I recommend you do some research. I don't know where else I can buy this brand in Austin but I'm glad I found it here! In addition they have a great selection of easy prep Indian meals and spices on the racks! Next time I go to stock up on rosewater I will peruse the shelves more thoroughly! read more

During Covid-19 lockdown. I needed a few staples like rice and potatoes. I first went to HEB where there was a line 2 blocks long. I went over to Gandhi Bazaar and got potatoes and rice and then got a little adventurous and collected all the ingredients for one of my favorite Indian dishes - Saag Paneer. read more

Looks like Ghandi Bazar recently bought this location from another vendor. I love their south store so I was excited they opened something a little closer to home for me. The merchandise selection isn't as broad as their south location, but they have a reasonable smattering of spices, pickles, dry masalsa, as well as bulk portions of rice and flour, frozen naan, dosa, roti, samosa and I think they had pakora, and some really amazing house-made masala base (they have bases for tikki, butter, jalfrezi and vindaloo totally ready for your meat or veggies). Like their south location, they have some fresh produce that is in pretty good shape; while I was there I picked up some methi leaves. They have $1 samosa, usually warm, at the register from Curry in a Hurry and they are decadent. One thing I noticed was absent compared to their south location were their house-ground spices. I really find this makes a huge difference in Indian cooking (and I am defintiely to lazy to figure this out on my own) so it was kind of a bummer that they didn't have house ground spice mixes. That being said, they have you ready to make an easy and really yummy indian meal without ever leaving your house. read more

YASSS! As a Nigerian I am always stoked when I happen upon a traditional food store. They even happen to have a dope little restaurant in the back. A friend and I ordered half the menu and it was delicious. The store may not be large, but they have a pretty solid collection of goodies. This little Indian Grocery store is tucked into the strip center like a hidden gem. They sell the usual Indian groceries, with fresh vegetables brought in on the weekends, and fresh samosas made by the owner's wife every day at 5:30 pm. If you go, be advised they open at 11 AM in the morning. I guess the main reason I like this place is that it is so close to the house I can run up there and pick up the missing ingredient. OMG that's a shitton of beans and peas and legumes! Its clean, a huge plus for an Indian grocer, and they have a bit of everything. The lady working the counter helped alot, and I needed it finding the beans I needed. I definitely recommend the whole wheat pita bread! I eat it with my homemade hummus, heat it on medium heat in a covered skillet for a few minutes. I turned on a Friend to neem masks. I noticed the expiration dates were marked out on some things but forgot to ask why. Feeshy? But it was rare enough to not delete a star. Although you can get a wheelchair in the place, I'd be afraid of knocking shelves over, it's pretty cramped. I haven't eaten at the restraint close by owned by the same family, but I heard it was good. The veggies in the back looked a little old, and were pretty much priced what I pay at HEB. And I saw them stocking some things that morning, as I was the first customer in. Hopefully it isn't like that all the time. Man it seems lie I'm complaining a lot on a 5 star review... But it was well stocked, had lots of Indian stuff I had no idea what to do with, and once again, it was clean. I need some more pita bread! read more
