The Staten island railway is R46 very similar to the A, R,F- Trains in the New York City subway line !!!! Could be worse...but it's always struck me as kind of crazy that there's just the one line running down one side of Staten Island. (Supposedly, at the time it was built, too many homeowners on Staten Island blocked it from crossing their property, so only the one line could be built.) Sure, there are connecting buses that cover most of the island, but they're slow as hell because the nature of all the roads on Staten Island is to meander aimlessly. There are no "caterpillar" double-length buses on S.I. because even in good weather they'd probably get stuck. The SIR (used to be called the Staten Island Rapid Transit, or SIRT, of the Staten Island Rapid Transit Operating Authority, or SIRTOA) is basically an above-ground subway; my friend who's lived there over 20 years has taken it about once, that's how useful it is. Still, I decided the other day to take it from the ferry terminal rather than the bus I usually take, and it was a better deal, timewise. The MTA Railroad is kinda Garbage. The end of the Island you will find your white supremacist. The beginning of the Island you will have the real NYC. The actual train is sorta reliable. A lot crazies, when you get from the ferry to the train it take about 5-10 minutes. So that can take up time. The train itself is pretty average. The main reason I went on here is to warn people. Their is this racist Italian woman who drives the bus. I remember, I paid to get on. She will literally moan in pain while driving the bus how much she hates her job. She is your typical entitled staten island gal. She has black girl, light skin, and has a smoker face. She gives discomfort gestures when people of color get on. She smells like smoke and constantly talkin shit. She hits the break often and she only likes you if you are from the Island. I recommend taking your business to Manhattan, Queens, or Brooklyn. Staten Island lacks culture and it way to suburban. I am pretty sure their are nice folks. This place is close the Republican side of the city. read more

Journey from one tip of the Island to the other. The one and only train is both reliable and worthy. It runs on the ferry schedule which is available online, FYI. If you take it to the ferry it will cost you $2, which includes a free transfer to either a subway or bus once you get to Manhattan. If you disembark before the ferry...guess what? NO CHARGE. What the frack is better than that? If there was actually a train/subway system....with different lines, well I suppose that would be better, and would earn itself a fifth star for sure. I just happen to live 2 blocks from the train. I like to hear them go by. Not too close, just close enough for it to somehow sound romantic. read more

As part of the MTA system the SIR is just another subway line (it's elevated). Unfortunately it's only one line that runs the length of Staten Island so it's only slightly helpful in getting where you need to be, it's a quick way to get down the east side of the island though. One thing worth mentioning is that this line is completely free if you're not using the last stop by the ferry terminal. All the stops aren't "stations" as much as they are just platforms with a set of stairs. Once you get on/off at the St George Stop you swipe your metro card and pay. If you just get on/off at the next stop (Tompkinsville) half a mile away you can bypass the couple buck fair. If you do swipe your card, and take the ferry into Manhattan, you'll get a free transfer if you get onto a bus/subway once you get into the city. read more

Almost always on time unless bad weather or things on the track. On weekdays it comes every half-hour and on weekends, every hour. It costs no money to get on and takes you to the ferry. For commuters going to the city and who do not want to take the express (expensive) bus, this is a great alternative. Just keep in mind it is not the warmest place during summer, or the coolest spot in summer. Your trip can also vary in pleasantness depending on who is riding with you. Commuters are usually quiet and polite, whereas students and young kids can be rather annoying. Also during the late night drunk people can be a nuisance. Your trip really depends on the people who surround you. Overall it is an invaluable asset to me and any other city commuter. read more

You have to go to the ferry to catch the express train in the morning which makes your commute longer. The next train that comes will drop you off at the middle of the line then you have to wait for another train to take you to other stops that doesn't make sense. This service is really for people going to and from the ferry. Train is very slow. Sketchy looking people take it at night. Rowdy, loud, drunk people too. During one of my rides, a group of younger people sat right behind me even though the car was empty and were being very loud, having a lewd conversation, rocked the seats the entire time they were on. They threw an empty plastic bottle they drank out of narrowly missing me as I exited the train. The train and the train stations are also freezing cold in the winter. There's nowhere to stay to escape the elements, the stops are all outside. No bathrooms, elevators or escalators. It's nicer if you're riding the express train from one end to the other, if not you'll wait a while for it to arrive and get to your destination. read more

The trains are scheduled to meet the ferry. That's why they're not that frequent. Until recently, people circumvented the fare by getting off at Tompkinsville and walking to the ferry. The MTA added turnstiles to Tompkinsville. I liked the cars better when the seats were orange, not the current grayish blue color. A few hoodlums act rowdy. They get on at the intermediate stops. When the train runs express, it goes very fast. The train is a lot cheaper than the express bus, but it's not as comfortable. read more

Ok so I normally don't make reviews but this has got to stop. I have seziures and take medication every day which makes me dizzy/ tired and requires me to sleep which I can't do because of the loud noises that are being made all day due to the machines on the rail road between the hours of 9:30 - 2pm mon- Fri. It has to be another way to get this project completed. I used to find the train reliable but now that I am in need of catching an earlier train (the 5:47am) I find it to be absolutely horrible! Maybe if I didn't have to wait 20 minutes for the next train to arrive it would not bother me as much, but the fact that I, along with other riders, am on time but the train has already departed the station is uncalled for. Today was the "icing on the cake" as at 5:46 the train door was literally closed on my face as the conductor said "sorrrryyyyyy." This train was not even suppose to be there and the fact that she could not even open the door for me and another man on a non-moving train blows me away! I've been taking the train since before high school, never an issue. We went to get on the train at 11:09 at Tompkinsville. I got on the train but when my husband went to get on, the doors closed on his foot and did not reopen...not allowing him to get on. I am currently sitting on the train without him writing this review with several of my friends who watched this happen. We are utilizing this train as a means to avoid drinking and driving. Well thanks a lot SIRR. BIG LET DOWN. As a passenger, I didn't think I needed to write this review to tell the conductor how to do his/her job, but your supposed to check and make sure everyone at your stop is safe and on the train. Staten Island railway sucks. Laziest motherfuckers on the planet.. if you need to know your exit you better be Professor X because nobody will help you. This is my third time on the train at night and they never announce any exits ever or what car you should be in. I would have a higher success rate in Russian roulette. Now I gotta wait another 30 minutes before the next one comes around, and it better not skip my station again.
