They've been my number one for a long time. But after trying the fish and chips at The Hog & Hen, I think there's a new champion. The Hog & Hen uses 100% cod, and it's outstanding. The fish is snow white, incredibly flaky, unbelievably moist, and cooked to perfection. Then there's the beer batter..... light, crispy, and fried to a gorgeous golden brown. Every bite had that perfect crunch followed by tender, flavorful cod. One thing I also appreciated, the seasoning. So many restaurants serve fish and chips that leave you reaching for the salt shaker. Not here. As soon as the fish and fries came out of the fryer, they were seasoned just right. It's a small detail, but it makes a huge difference. My only knock and this is purely personal, is the fries. I'm just not a fan of fresh cut fries. I prefer a crispy steak fry or something with a little more crunch. That's simply my preference and certainly not a deal breaker. However, here's the bottom line, the cod is absolutely phenomenal. It's one of the best fish & chips I've had, and it has officially took over my number one spot. I'll definitely be back many more times for the fish & chips. The restaurant felt cozy with a lit up Christmas tree in the entryway and wreaths hung along the walls. The menu was specialized for the evening with two options to choose from for each course. We both ordered the butternut squash risotto for the appetizer. Prime rib with mashed potatoes and maple glazed carrots for the main course. For dessert I went with the cake pops(pink champagne and double chocolate) and my husband chose the blood orange tart. As always the food was wonderful. The cut of prime rib was thick and not fatty. I was very impressed with the portion sizes. The au ju sauce elevated the flavor of our prime rib. The cake pops were the perfect end to my meal. Great flavor and texture. I was perfectly full by the end of our meal. Even though the dining room was quite crowded, we appreciated the noise level and that we had no trouble hearing each other speak. Our server Alex was attentive and helpful. He offered to have my prime rib grilled longer to be a bit more done which I really appreciated. We left happy with our choice to have our final meal of the year at The Hog and Hen, always a great experience!

The portions are large and the quality is high. I have been to diners where they use deli meat and you can tell, it's just not as good. At Yellow Mills they serve carved roasted turkey. It's delicious! The sandwich and mashed potatoes come smothered with gravy; the ultimate comfort meal for me. My partner ordered the fish fry with fries. It typically comes with coleslaw but they let him upgrade to a salad at no additional cost. Prices are reasonable, less than $30 pretax for our pictured entrees.

In addition to the chicken, it included lettuce, mushrooms, and bacon and dressing that did not leak outside the wrap which is always my fear in ordering a wrap. There's a variety of so doesn't soft drinks inside of a chiller. Order at the counter and staff will happily bring your food pronto.
