Mudhouse Coffee located on King Street very near Calhoun Square is a great coffee house. It is part of a small chain which originated in Charlottesville VA. Usually I swerve away from chains but I have to say this family owned one hits the spot. The ambiance is so inviting and cozy. It's a place to chill with a coffee, read a book, people watch and scroll on your phone. The coffee is very good. The staff are friendly & efficient. 5 stars for great coffee on Kings Street with a hidden outdoor seating area that calls you in! I was in downtown Charleston looking for a spot for some laptop time with caffeine and stumbled upon Mudhouse. What called me in was a glimmer of the back outdoor area I could see through a gate. You order coffee at the counter and I also grabbed a sparkling water. Walk towards the back of the cafe and you can exit to the back area that is gorgeous, green, and features many different seating options. I was thrilled to be able to work here without feeling like I was taking too much space in a small cafe. It is the absolute ideal spot on a nice day! Mudhouse uses ceremonial grade matcha for their beverages, and the baristas were patient in whisking, which I appreciate because I've seen some coffee shops committing atrocities (e.g. storing premixed matcha in syrup bottles). Also, shout out to Carlie and Wright, super sweet baristas! Their matcha latte tastes great by itself, but if you have to pick a flavor to enhance the latte, pick the brown sugar cinnamon syrup. They sprinkle the cinnamon inside the cup before pouring the syrup and the rest, giving the beverage a beautiful golden look. Finally, their outdoor seating in the back is such a vibe. It's mostly unused, since people don't know there is seating back there. They have bean bags, where you can lay there, relax, and look up at the sky. Just watch out for mosquitoes though. read more

Inside and outside are aesthetically pleasing. I felt like the ambiance was a bunch of chill college students working on their school work and getting a vibe to eat. The place was not noisy. Service was okay! I ordered an affogato with chocolate gelato. The cashier let me know that they didn't have anymore nuts to put on top which is fine. I was a tad surprised they ran out of it at 8AM. He made an honest mistake and forgot about my ham and Swiss croissant. When I asked him about it, he said he would put it on the oven to heat it up. Affogato 11/10: This was absolutely worth it all! Perfect blending of strong espresso and sweet chocolate gelato. Really complimented each other. Unsure if the nuts would've made a difference. Ham & Swiss croissant -1/10: Edible. When it came out of the oven, it wasn't warm but to be frank, the bottom was COLD and hard. I wouldn't say it was frozen. But you can get a better quality croissant from a Wawa. Stopped by after work, staff was very friendly and thankfully it wasn't too crowded at that time, so we didn't even have to wait in line. Got a caramel iced latte, gladly accepting the warning that it came with 4 shots of espresso. It's a cute spot with lots of seating lining the sides, it was pretty quiet when I was there - I guess most people aren't getting coffee at 4pm like I do haha My latte was yummy - had a good flavor. I also had the chicken/bacon/ranch wrap, which came with chips as well. It was simple, but had a nice amount of cheese on it. Obviously, it's not a fancy dinner, but it hit the spot! read more

The woman at the counter was super friendly as I ordered an iced vanilla latte. She informed me the syrup is made in house and I was so excited to try it (the difference in taste is always dramatically better than those generic syrups). It was a quiet Sunday afternoon so I sat at a table to enjoy my coffee. The table was a cute marble flower and I enjoyed my coffee very much. Parking around here is terrible so be prepared to do some walking. Once you get here though the courtyard in the back is a cute little oasis! It has lattice and coverings and patio seating, which is great for doing a work from home day. The coffee menu is pretty limited, but they do have different flavoring. You can add. They have a food menu but everything is pre-prepped and limited selection. I got the Caprese bagel sandwich which had roasted red peppers on it pesto and sliced mozzarella. Really solid cafe in the heart of downtown Charleston with lovely coffee selection! The iced vanilla latte with either almond or macadamia milk is my favorite. I guess you can't get any regular priced thing on king street. The smallest of all their lattes is $7 or $7.50, before tip and before tax. I got a toasted marshmallow latte and my sister got an iced vanilla latte. Coffee was good but I wouldn't say 7 dollars good. They pour their espresso directly on top of the ice so the syrup was sitting at the bottom of the cup. Once mixed it tastes good. All the workers were laughing which is nice to see but I felt like me being there was an imposition on their own conversation. read more

I stopped in for a much-needed pick-me-up after walking all day. The staff was friendly, but the pickup area could have been much better organized. You place your order at the front, but drinks are handed out all the way in the back, which created a long, confusing line of people waiting. The barista making drinks was at the far end and it was difficult to hear names being called--she actually called mine four times before the cashier had to hand it to me. A system where you can sit and be called up, or at least a clearer pickup process, would make things run a lot smoother. read more

Visited Mudhouse for morning coffee the first day we arrived at our hotel, and ended up there every morning of our stay. No real reason to go elsewhere, even with Starbucks in our lobby. Fresh brewed, mild to bold flavors, regular and decaf available for any drink they prepare for you. Breakfast sandwiches, sweet and savory croissants, sweet and savory scones, a variety of muffins, pound cake, coffee cake, homemade pop tarts! We sat twice outside and twice indoors, both spaces are cozy and can be intimate without being tight. The vibe is a touch hipster, warm, friendly, relaxed, not chaotic. Very clean, spacious restroom for customers. On weekdays we observed folks on high chairs or at small tables with their laptops, clearly already at work. The staff was friendly, accommodating and eager to please. Prices are in line with any artisan coffee house. Loved Mudhouse, worth a visit. read more

Oatmeal is good, but not great. Taste was good, but had hoped for a little variance in consistency (no nuts / fruit). I appreciate that it's more natural though. Next time I'm going to try one of the baked goods. Those looked amazing (but trying to be healthy). Coffee: 4.5 stars. Flavor is spot on, but not a huge fan of oat milk and whole milk also isn't a favorite of mine. Would have liked a 2% or (better yet) skim milk. I know some people this wouldn't be an issue - but I prefer a lighter milk option. Atmosphere: 5 stars. Really cute spot and a lot of seating. Clean surfaces and brightly lit. If I am to sit in a coffeehouse my # 1 choice in Charleston would be Mudhouse Coffee Roasters on King Street. Having won the Micro Roaster of the Year in 2017 in their home state of Virginia I can see why this roaster is extra special and a cut above the rest! The interior reflects the local charms of Charleston with exposed brick walls and rustic flooring. Cozy tables line both sides and some have comfortable loveseats as well. Front windows provide light and good people watching and of course laptop outlets are available throughout. The very busy counter and kitchen area is complete with all the fancy machinery needed to brew, roast, blend , pour over and steam whatever you would like. Give a look at the La Marzocco KB 90 espresso machine complete with Mazzer grinders! Now that's impressive! For the iced tea totler there is a machine for you as well~ the Marco Mix UC 3 will boil water in preparation for the sweet teas that Charlestonians grew up with and live on to this day! The crew is super friendly and willing to explain in detail all of the brew choices available. You wind up getting an education. Take the time to lookup the background of this establishment. Very interesting evolvement stemming from a single outdoor coffee cart and their expansion continues in the Richmond,Va. and Alexandria, Va.areas. read more

This place is very cute, a very traditional indie coffee shop vibe that's pretty quiet and a nice place to take a little rest. It's located off of the busy shopping strip in Charleston. I stopped into Mudhouse today, I got a Nitrocano (take an Americano then make it cold and run it through the nitro process), my friend got the M-Egg Ryan sandwich. He moved his sandwich. My coffee was really unique, it had the flavor of an Americano... dark like espresso but not super strong, but with a creamy texture despite not having any actual milk in it. Food and drink came out fast and the staff was friendly and helpful. I liked the vibe inside, very chic. Price was around $18 for the sandwich and coffee; a bit high compared to Starbucks but not too outrageous by King Street standards. Would definitely stop in again next time I am in the area and wanting a coffee. read more

I'm pretty sure I just paid $9 for an oat milk brown sugar latte, which is probably $2 more than the norm. But the espresso shots were well balanced, the brown sugar brought a subtle hint of sweet, and the vibe, with real ceramic coffee cups, is exactly what you should get from a third-wave store. It's right on King Street, which is probably part of why it's so pricey. I'll be coming here for the rest of my vacation in Charleston. read more
