In one instance they then did research on the issue, and I took the car back (I could only leave it for a day). With the issue still not resolved they did additional research and wrote up a quote for what they believe is causing the issue. They didn't charge me for the first two visits when they could have easily charged for diagnostic/labor time, but they want to get the job done correctly. I had a comprehensive ac evaluation at PepBoys in Lindenhurst a couple of days earlier, was told the Freon was full and they found no leaks but the "compressor did not engage". The ECV issue is common with that model and year. I decided to shop around as I have been looking for a competent and honest repair shop since my go to guy of 15 years sold his shop. Understandably Cosmos Auto wanted to confirm the issue before providing a price and told me to bring my car in for a free ac evaluation. Nice clean place and people pleasant. I waited in their comfortable waiting room for them to evaluate the ac. After a while a guy came out and told me I did not need an ECV valve or a compressor and they found no leaks but the "Freon was absolutely empty" contrary to what I was told at PepBoys. The cost with tax was approximately $250. They added, though they didn't think so, if there was a "minor undetectable" leak, a dye in the Freon would reveal this in a few months. I was excited to finally find a competent honest replacement auto shop. I told family, friends and work associates and had plans to bring my son in law' s car in for engine work and my nephew's car too. I drove my car to work the next morning about 12 miles, ac worked beautifully and it worked driving home too. The next morning I turned the ac on and it blew hot air even hotter than it did before the Freon fill up. I called Cosmos Auto and a woman told me that the dye in the Freon is to determine undetectable leaks in the ac. Since the ac lasted no more than 24 hours if it was leaking, it was not a minor leak requiring dye to detect it. This appears to be a tactic to force customers to come back to an auto shop for expensive ac repairs. Needless to say, my search for a competent, honest repair shop continues.

It is the nightmare of mechanics. They are not honest. I was a long time customer at this shop with two different cars and it did not occur to me that they were damaging my car and not changing my oil (when I went in for a routine oil change). It took a string of events that caused me realize what was going on. First my car had been having a problem with it's headlights where the right low beam would turn off with a brand new bulb. I took the car into be fixed and was given a temp fix several times, but not explanation and never a permanent fix. I was having trouble starting my car. I took the car to the shop with a friend following me. They checked my car and told me my starter was going and to bring it back the following day. I specifically asked the owner if I could leave it that night since I had a ride home. He told me the car would be fine for another few days and to bring it back. It died that night in a parking lot. A different friend came out to try to help me get it started so that I could drop it off at the shop instead of having it towed. He was unable to get the car started but informed me that my oil (which had just been changed) was very dirty and had either not been done or done poorly. I wound up having to have the car towed costing me more money when I could have just left it there. While having the starter replaced they once again temp fixed my low beam. This time when I picked the car up I was informed that it was the last time they would be able to temp fix my low beam because my fuse box had melted. Suddenly, I was given an explanation. They appeared to not know why my fuse box would have melted. I purchased a new fuse box which was pretty expensive. I asked the shop if they could install it and bill me since I was a consistent customer and the fuse box had been expensive. It's also good to mention that whenever they needed a part for my car they had me pick it up from the dealership (even the dealership was bothered by that). Brakes Inc told me specifically that they just decided to no longer bill because of too many outstanding bills from other customers (convenient). This forced me to seek out another shop and a friends husband installed it for me since it was a plug in. He informed me that the reason my fuse box melted was because a second master power line had been installed. Why didn't Brakes Inc tell me this? Why didn't they fix this before it melted my fuse box? Bad service. My headlight problems continued and I had to seek a car electrician before finally bringing my car to the dealership. Turns out the second master power line was frying all of the wires in my harness. Fortunately for me it had only been affecting the headlights, but I did have to have all of the wiring replaced. Since changing mechanics, I have had no more major problems with my car. None. These guys either take advantage or they truly know nothing about auto repair. I leave this review where I can because they are so few reviews out there and if this happened to me, I am sure it's happening to other people. I wouldn't trust this company. I went there for years and I felt very betrayed by them.

He first suggested that the turbocharger was causing the noise, but this is a car without a turbo. Then he said it was definitely an engine problem, and later added that it was a gasket in the exhaust system. The person who works on exhaust systems says he does not repair the exhaust gasket that he damaged. I spent money on things that were not the most important and that he thought should be done, and still nothing has actually been fixed. I do not recommend.

I was a loyal senior customer of A & R Auto in Smithtown for years and referred friends and family…read morebecause I trusted them. I had made an appointment for an oil change using a VALID coupon that was advertised on their website and Facebook. When I arrived, I was told they would not honor the valid advertised price because their website hadn't been updated, and they wanted to charge me an additional $20. I was trying to explain in a calm manner why this VIOLATES federal laws like the Federal Trade Commission Act. I was truly shocked that a small business like this was so unaware of basic business practices. When I questioned why I should have to pay more because of an error on their website, the conversation turned into a heated argument. I explained that customers shouldn't be penalized for a business's failure to update its advertised pricing. I asked to speak to the owner and instead a male employee came out to yell at me when I attempted to explain how this could be misconstrued as a Bait & Switch tactic. They eventually agreed to honor the coupon, but then told me to "never come back." After years of being a loyal customer and referring friends and family, I found the entire experience horrific and unprofessional. Businesses make mistakes, but how they handle those mistakes--and how they treat loyal customers--matters. Unfortunately, based on this experience, I can no longer recommend A & R Auto, BUYER BEWARE
