Hooray! Mughal Palace has finally opened the dining room. We've ordered take out for 3 years and ask regularly when they were going to open the dining in option. The ambiance is cozy, the service highly attentive. The owner, whose story is in the menu, served us personally. We ate garlic naan, lamb, and beef dishes that were divinely perfect. I mean, I've had a lot of Indian food in many different states, and so pleased to have one of the best in our "backyard." Now that the dining room is open, we were able to experience the free crispy things with 3 different glorious "sauces." This was an entrancing foray away from every other restaurant's free bread and butter. We will dine in every possible chance going forward. read more

Absolutely amazing dishes! My wife and I ordered Mughal Palace Sunday after looking for good Indian Cuisine these past few months since moving to Hallowell. It was right under our noses. I ordered the Chicken Tikka Masala and she Ordered the Butter Chicken. We chose the Garlic Naan which was very flavorful and made in house. For dessert we ordered the Gulab Jamon which was a pleasant surprise, neither of us have tried that anywhere before. The Chicken Tikka Masala (Medium Spice) was the perfect blend of spice and flavor. The chicken was perfectly cooked and the rice was also perfectly cooked and had just the right amount of flavor to compliment the main dishes. The Butter Chicken was also perfectly cooked, the creaminess and flavor was absolutely amazing and hands down the best Butter Chicken we have ever had. Like I mentioned, this was our first time trying Mughal Palace and we will 100% be back, with friends and family. I could see this place easily being in my top 5 local eats. Well done! read more

This food is outstanding! We had the nav rattan korma, saag paneer and chicken tikka and garlic naan. Everything was fresh and spicy( they offer mild, med, hot and we got medium). Came here on a Thursday night in October. Was not taken back by the outside look of the place because normally when a place doesn't look the best on the outside, they tend to be delicious on the inside. We were the only ones in the restaurant but I was happy because that meant our food would come out quick. I'm guessing it was slow because it's not tourist season. I started off with a mango lassi, which I ALWAYS adore. My husband had the cauliflower fritters and samosas for appetizers. He said the fritters were just okay & wished it came with a sauce, but he thoroughly enjoyed the samosas. I asked our waiter what he suggested for my meal: chicken or lamb. He recommended the chicken tikka. I felt like that was too safe of a meal because everyone gets that at an Indian spot, so I chose the Chicken Butter & got some garlic naan to go with. My husband went with the Lamb Korma with no nuts (tree nut allergy.) We paired our food with the mango chutney and raita. First of all the garlic naan here is the ABSOLUTE BEST garlic naan I've ever had. My chicken butter was excellent, great flavor. The only negative for me was the chicken to sauce ratio. Lot of sauce, not enough chicken. I didn't mind though because once I finished my chicken I dipped my garlic naan in the sauce and yum yum delicious!! My husband said the Lamb Korma was just ok, he would've preferred the meal I had. The chutney was good. I asked for plain yogurt but they gave us raita instead which to me tastes like tzatziki sauce which goes better with Greek food. Overall meal was wonderful. Very satisfied & will return if we are ever in Maine again. Would love to try the buffet! This place should be more packed with all this delicious food!!! read more

During our 3days Acadia National Park outing, we saw this place on the way and decided to stop by for lunch while retuning. And here we were today for a lunch while heading back home. We had a la carte for the lunch in this restaurant, the food was tasty and good. 1. Butter Naan 2. Garlic Naan 3. Malai Kofta 4. Chicken Vindaloo To start with butter Naan, it was soft, airy and light (4/5). Garlic Naan was good too, but the garlic was not raw for our taste, could have fried little more (3/5). The Malai kofta was creamy and delicious, it had right consistency of gravy(sauce) along with 3 vegetable koftas (4.5/5). The chicken vindaloo, it had a great taste, could taste good range of spices and was prepared as ordered with right amount of heat. Only down side, the chicken was not tender enough, was little rubbery (4/5). A la carte comes with free papadam (4 count) and 3 different chutney (onion, green chilly and tamarind, jaggery). The entrees that we had above comes with white basmati rice. They have got the buffets for lunch only till 3PM. Only reason to gave 4 stars, the person/staff at the hotel wasn't welcoming or friendly. Personally I feel, treating customers with friendly gestures matters the most. My favorite Indian restaurant in Portland so far and also loved by my 2 Indian colleagues. The naan (garlic and onion) are to die for! They do not shortchange you on ingredients and flavor here! Service is speedy and friendly. You can order dishes from a 1-10 spice level. Make sure you ask your waiter before committing to a very spicy level (6 or above), because it might just be a little hotter than you had in mind. So far, we have loved all the dishes we've tried, including butter chicken, seafood tikka masala, and the chicken briyani. Keep up the great work Hi Bombay! read more

The chicken curry, chicken saag, and naan are all amazing. Best Indian food north of Portland.

As far as lunch buffets go, I am skeptical of them especially at Indian Restaurants. But this is a refreshing exception. The lamb biriyiani was spot on--add some lamb curry and gravy if you want more meat. Drizzle some raita (yoghurt) and you are rockin! The cauliflower fritters were bangin' with mint and tamarind chutney. The Chicken tikka were a bit tame for my preference, and the naan kind of flat like roti. The basmati rice had a consistent fluffy texture. Add more interest with the onion and sticky mango chutney and mango pickle. These make the mild chicken tikka come alive. The milk tea was warm and not too sweet. But the kheer and gulab jamun surprisingly good with great texture and flavor. Even the syrup in the gulab jamun had a lovely spice and honey like scent. Complete the meal with the price point and we are sold--we will detour here for lunch every time we are near! read more

Hi Bombay, oh what can I say, about dear old hi Bombay? I can say how much I love it! I spent 10 years living in New York in a part of queens that had its own Little India, so authenticity was prevalent. However, I grew up here in Portland and hi Bombay was the standard by which I judged Indian food in New York. Are there places in New York that are better? Yeah, but that may have to do with just how many more places there are. Since I moved away and then moved back, a great deal more ethnic restaurants have sprung up. Thai, Chinese, Szechuan, Indian, Latin and many others I'm sure. But hi Bombay was here long before them and there's a reason it has stayed for so long. There korma is the basis by which I judge Indian food and I have never gone there without getting at least an order of garlic naan and onion bhaji and samosa. I used to work at a local Indian takeaway here in Portland, which no longer exists. So I know something about how the food is created. Whatever magic it is they have in the kitchen is the real deal. And I love that they offer spice range from 0 to 10. Because it means you have every opportunity to dial in just how spicy you actually want it to be. I lovingly and jokingly tell friends and visitors that the scale is from American to actual Indian. I freely admit I am a spicy food wimp, but the food here at level 0 1 or 2, suits me perfectly! It has been delicious every time, no matter if it was the shrimp or the chicken or the vegetarian! I will be loyal to this place as long as I live here. read more

In love! Deliciosoooo (delicious in Spanish) HUGE Fan of Hi Bombay. Love the flavors - when you ask for spicy they sure give you spicy which is perfect for me. Bread basket was excellent - man oh man that Naan. Portion sizes are pretty good - great for sharing unless you go with heavy eaters. But the prices...oh the prices put too much of a strain in my wallet. It gets very pricey here. I wish Hi Bombay had a buffet option like Taj. Taj's buffet option honestly sways me to travel to SOPO to get some delicious Indian food. Hi Bombay's food definitely has more of a kick, but you can't beat Taj's price with the buffet. I'm definitely comparing because it's a dilemma I am faced with when I'm craving Indian food. This place is excellent. Service was fine. I read some bad reviews regarding the service. They take your order, make you the food, bring you the food - simple. That's fine by me. I didn't feel any ill will or attitude towards my group. In Taj they smile and talk to you more and maybe that's what people want, but Hi Bombay they weren't rude - just more straight to the point. Great food. The garlic naan and onion bhaji are both great. We also tried the aloo naan which was okay. Split a lamb rogan josh which appeared to be a fairly small portion even for one, but was very rich and filling and was more than enough for both of us. Definitely happy we got the naan to go with it. The prices are a little high, though the drink prices are very low. A note about spice - the menu touts a 1-10 scale for spiciness and we ordered our entree at a 2. It's hard to say what that means for the chef, but it was fairly spicy. Not too much for us but enough to warn folks who can't deal with spicy foods. read more

En route to Bar harbor we were hungry and it was past lunch hours, luckily found Mughal palace to be open all day long! They have huge parking space, also have outdoor seating good for summers! The ambience is quite stodgy, loved the service and food was brilliant! We were four adults and one kid, ordered some naan, veggie Briyani, Daal Shorba Soup (Perfect to eat it with a cup of rice, was just like light sambar) and Bombay Bazi curry! The naans were huge, very soft and was perfect to eat with the curry. This unique style curry was medium spicy and loaded with veggies. Even the Briyani was delicious, good to be shared, the saffron touch with the spices was just perfect! Excellent Indian restaurant in Portland, managed by the same owners as Shere Punjab in nearby Brunswick. Same great food as Shere Punjab, menu also. Extremely friendly and wonderful food. Two huge parties of Indians eating lunch, if that says anything. The vegetarian appetizer platter was perfect, three pieces of Indian fried cheese, one large samosa, two chick peas patties fried and two fried vegetable patties, all with the yummy spice sprinkled on top. This was served on lettuce, which I ate, because it was also sprinkled with the yummy Indian spices. The saag paneer was delicious with large chunks of Indian cheese and fresh spinach and cream. The pori bread was puffy and light like a balloon when it was served and soon deflated when it lost its air. Service was excellent and fast. Free parking out back. Awesome place. read more

Very good Indian, and the rice has saffron in it which you don't always see. I'm hungry just thinking about it! I had the butter chicken and mom had the lamb vindaloo, both of which were on par with other authentic Indian restaurants I've eaten at. The cauliflower fritter appetizer was something I hadn't seen before and was DELICIOUS as well as unique. Per usual the garlic naan was delicious, but honestly when is it not? Under new ownership - same as Shere Punjab in Brunswick - and the food is amazing! The food came out piping hot and loaded with flavor. We started with two soups -- the vegetarian tomato soup and the dal (lentil) soup, and both were fragrant and delicious. The onion chutney was bright red and deeply flavorful, while the mango chutney was the perfect combination of sweet and savory. Hot, fresh naan bread made the perfect pair. For mains, we loved the richly flavored, tomato based chicken curry; and the deep-green sag paneer (cheese cubes in spinach). Service is professional and polite, and the price point affordable. Since I commute between Maine and Massachusetts, I eat out a lot. I live in both places, so I know the restaurants I like. When I eat out, it is often either Viet or Indian, since both cuisines are relatively inexpensive and can be wonderful if done right. I live near Mughal Palace, and we eat there fairly often. It is a good, completely reliable restaurant run by a Bengali fellow and his family. Several of them, including kids doing their homework. If you like Indian food and can tell good from mediocre, eat at Mughal Palace. Trust me on this. Supper starts with a plate of papad (poppadoms) and relish, on the house. If you need another plate of papad, it costs $2.50. You can make a lovely lunch of it and lentil soup, but I'll get to that. The papad is perfect: well-fried, neither burnt nor greasy. The onion relish is always freshly made and spicy, but not burning hot. The lentil soup (dal) is always piping hot and just spicy enough to be interesting. The veg pakoras are crispy and just out of the oil. If it isn't busy and you ask nicely, they might make you onion fritters (bhaji). Best in show. I won't go on about the rest of the menu. If you liked something in some other Indian restaurant, you will probably like it at Mughal. It will be cooked right. Tell the waiter how you like it and the kitchen will do a good job. The food is halal, so don't expect pork. But they have a beer and wine license. I ribbed the owner about it once. He said just because most Muslims don't drink, most of his customers aren't Muslim. Good point. Besides, a guy has to make a living. My personal experience of the place would rate five stars. Heaven gets only four. read more

I've been talking about going here for two years. So today we finally went. Lunch was good, but the menu for lunch is very limited. That surprised me. Portion size was good-we didn't leave hungry nor were there leftovers. There was only us and one other table-so it was surprising we were being rushed. We were about half done our appetizer when our meal came out. No offers of refill on any drink-water or soda-and no suggestion of a desert. I did like that they brought the card reader to the table and the restaurant was clean. I'll try dinner next time when we can try the more extensive menu. I'd like to start by saying I'm pretty new to the whole Indian food thing... so I don't have much to compare this to! BUT! I have tried at least four of the vegetarian dishes here and they were all really good... My favorite so far is shahi paneer, but I also liked the channa masala and malai kofta a lot. The samosas are really yummy. A friend who is more familiar than I am with Indian found the food to be "pretty good" but not amazing. And she said the portion sizes were on the small side for the price, based on her experience. But overall, yum. I crave this on a regular basis! read more

I have had two pretty dissapointing visits. Several years ago, I went and didn't think anything too special of the food. I remember the byriani being excellent, but not being in love with anything else. I also remember chipping my tooth on what I believe was a piece of broken ceramic plate that somehow found its way into my curry. This week my wife and I decided to give them another visit. Having spent the last 2 months in South East Asia eating what I can only describe as the best Indian food of my life, I was hankering for some masala spice and naan. Our most recent meal was as lack luster as the former. The food was..."meh" and the service was pretty aweful. Our server seemed much more preoccupied surfing YouTube than on paying attention to my wife and I. While we were ordering our meal, he spontaneously walked away without saying a word. The wait for the check took forever which was super annoying considering we were the only patrons in the whole restaurant. Not sure if I will be going back. read more

I love Indian food and was very happy to have a new Indian restaurant in the August/Gardiner area, however there are some changes needed before I'll think about going here regularly. I went with a friend and we ordered the Chicken Tikka Masala, the Shahi Paneer, and the Keema Naan. All of the food was good, but certainly not as spicy as we would have liked or thought we had ordered, however maybe just ordering a higher spice level next time will be the answer. The service could also use improvement. They did not check on us after we got our food and then they took a little too long to bring us our check.
