I've frequented this lovely establishment for a bit and am only now writing a review. Because of this, I can speak to their consistency being on point. They are shooting 100% across my order history both dine in and take out. As for the rest of it, you'll be hard pressed to find their combination of freshness & variety of flavors and textures in many other restaurants of any genre across this great state. We started off a little slow, waiting someone to come over and offer food and drink longer than needed, especially since we were the only patrons. But we ordered and since we were fairly unused to ordering Indian food we got a great amount of help ordering. Not too hot, light on spices, no onions and we got food we actually enjoyed. Yesterday while out and about I decided to go grab something super yummy to take home. I happened upon Hi Bombay and decided it was time to coddle the craving I'd been having for chicken korma for a while. I ordered the korma (comes with rice) and traditional naan to go. It was much cheaper than I was expecting. Staff was very kind and accommodating. They had me on my way quickly. Ambiance in the restaurant gives little hole in the wall spot, which I never mind. I was really impressed with this place. Of course, I'm a Taj fan- who in southern maine isn't?!- but I wanted to give these guys a try because I'd heard good things. I'm really glad I did. I got the paneer tikka masala and garlic naan, and DANG, was that flavor good. They do spice levels from one to ten- how cool is that?! I ordered online and it was ready within 15 minutes. As I waited, the place smelled amazing, was very clean, and had super service. The guy running it was so kind. He forgot my naan, and as I was walking home he called me, told me he forgot, then ran up the street to give it to me! That's above and beyond. The flavor is excellent. Spice is excellent. Butter Chicken (3.5/5) - It was delicious and the sauce was nice with the rice. However, I would've like a bigger portion of chicken. It was an average dish. The service was standard. Last time I was here was years ago, and I think it's been a few months since I've had take out from here. Similarly, I overheard someone else at another table remark that they'd been here maybe 5 years ago and they think they've tried just about everywhere else and thought it time to come back. And Hi Bombay is a good place to come back to, I think. I ordered the keema naan, which is filled with ground lamb. I remember liking it before and I did again, though I think it tasted drier than I remember it. I also ordered the murg malabar. I had never heard of it but I found it delicious. The server warned us up front that tandoori chicken would take a while to make. We appreciated the heads up so we could make the show we had tickets for. Like a ruby in a crown, Hi Bombay sits on the corner of Pleasant in the hilly, bustling Old Port. It is small and unassuming. You will be greeted like family and fed like a king. Their curries are extraordinary, and the flatbread melts in the mouth. Tandoori is incredible as well. My favorite dishes are the vegan and vegetarian selections, and when they have biryani it fills the air with spices and fragrances I am still trying to fully identify. There is something a little bit magical about Hi Bombay. Are there bigger and fancier options? Yes, I cannot tell a lie. However, if you are in the neighborhood, it would be foolish to keep walking. In the ever changing and much hyped (but frequently disappointing and often pretentious) food scene of Portland Maine, Hi Bombay is a rare gem and should not be overlooked. read more

Hi Bombay has been in Portland before most Portlanders have been here. It's got good Indian cuisine, but really can't compare with other out of state venues. I go there once a year because it's been loyal to Portland, so I'm loyal to it. Now that I'm moving north out of Portland, the new Portlanders might not show it the love because it's not fresh or nouveau. But, I've found a new place in Brunswick called Shere Punjab...I highly recommend it. read more

Wow. Hi Bombay is excellent. I had exclusively heard rave reviews about this place, and it most definitely lived up to expectations. While their interior could use some updating, their food is beyond delicious, and is perfect for those who are seeking authentic Indian cuisine. I tried a boatload of food, all of which left me 'fat and happy'--the Punjab Vegetarian appetizer (a mixed platter with samosas and the like), Papadam (who knew that lentil wafers could be so flavorful!?), Garlic Baan (a classic), mango lassi (essentially a mango/yogurt smoothie that's akin to a dessert), Saag Paneer (a creamy spinach-based dish with cubes of cheese), and lastly, the Paneer Tikka Masala (paneer in a creamy sauce). I can't recommend these dishes enough! Hi Bombay seems to be family-run, which I love. Our server was incredibly sweet and our food came out so quickly for how much we ordered! Fantastic Indian food. I have been here twice now while traveling for work and it is my go-to for Indian in the area. Last night I ordered quite a feast for one. I started with a mango lassi. It was thick, delicious, and mango-y and came out in a nice cup. For a starter I got the Onion Bhaji. These were crispy, delicious fried onion fritters with a tasty seasoning on them that came out with the three standard chutneys for dipping/topping. I also got a plain naan to have with my meal which was warm, buttery, and quite large. For my main entree I got the Murg Malabar. This was a fansastic coconut curry. I got a 5 on the spice scale (out of 10), and it was right where I had hoped it would be. It was a delectable warm dinner on a cold winter night. The inside is pretty standard, they play a nice mix of modern/older music and the service was kind and quick. I couldnt recommend this place enough for someone looking for some great Indian food in the area. read more

My husband and I ordered from Hi Bombay for delivery. The food arrived well packaged and hot! We ordered pappadam, Onion Bhaji, Samosa, Dal Shobra soup, and Co-co Nut Soup. The appetizers were great! We ordered some extra chutneys to enjoy! For our main dishes we ordered Butter Chicken and Boti Kabab Masala with rice. Both dishes were very good! My husband absolutely enjoyed his (Boti Kabab). I really loved mine too but would have been more enjoyable has the chicken been diced smaller. The garlic naan was delicious! Give this place a try! read more

Went for dinner here on a cold rainy night in Portland. Three of us had an appetizer platter, a couple of entrees and some wonderful naan. We also had some drinks. The food was excellent quality, a nice quantity and came out piping hot. It was the perfect meal to warm us up after being tourists for the day. Would highly recommend. read more

Food is fine, the service was not great. This place is not well taken care of and I did not feel clean here. The tables were not bussed and the restaurant is in desperate need of some TLC. The waiters need guidance in knowing how to better serve customers. We were rarely checked on and water was rarely refreshed. One dish was wrong too. Hi Bombay is one of the best Indian restaurants we've ever eaten at. The menu is impressively extensive. It includes both often seen mainstays as well as unique ones such as 'Nine Gems.' On a recent visit we shared chicken and mushroom, and the Nine Gems. The chicken was tender, perfectly cooked. The key (to our palates) of great Indian food is the sauce, which Hi Bombay does better than anyone else. It was rich, immensely flavorful, creamy, deliciously complex, with the perfect amount of spices. The mushrooms were fresh, expertly sautéed in the sauce. The Nine Gems, apparently a house specialty, was a mix of nine different vegetables, raisins, cheese, in its own wonderfully complex and rich sauce. They ask your preference for spiciness on a scale of 0 to 10! Amazing! When have you ever experienced a restaurant willing to custom tailor spiciness to your preference with so many gradations! (FYI a level of 3 was mildly spicy, just enough to enhance the complexity of flavors). The meal is served with a heaping bowel of long grained rice. That's another tell of quality in an Indian restaurant - do they use authentic long grain rice, cooked properly (meaning, not over cooked)? Hi Bombay aces this too, not like some places that just use whatever cheap white rice they can find. The service couldn't be nicer. The wait person was helpful in describing the different dishes, impeccably polite and nice, and very attentive with drink and rice refills. Hi Bombay would be among the best Indian restaurants by New York or Boston standards. In Portland, it's an absolute gem. We'll be regulars, and plan to return as often as possible. read more

Great food, slow service. Food was great -- just what we ordered and with nice flavor and exactly the spice level we'd ordered and expected. We were at one of only 2 occupied tables here for an early dinner one day last week, so the slow service was a big surprise, because there appeared to be two hosts/servers there with little/nothing else to do at the time. That was disappointing. They were very friendly when we interacted with them, but they were not attentive -- one of us had to get up and go to the counter to ask for more water. A sunny day here in Portland, ME and it calls for an outing. So, we decided to have a lunch @Hi Bombay. We enjoyed the lunch over all, below is the lunch we ordered and the rating as per my palate. Tomato Soup - 1.5/5 Punjab Special Vegetarian platter - 3/5 Garlic Naan - 4/5 Tandoori Roti - 2/5 Vegetable Biryani - 3/5 Shahi Korma - 4/5 Tomato soup was watery and not to our expectations. Spices were there, but not the authentic soup. Moving on, vegetarian platter was okay. Samosa and Tikki was the star of platter, rest of dish was so so. Garlic Naan was delicious, little burnt on a side. Tandoori roti was good, but burnt than usual and could taste it. Vegetable Biryani is okay, good spice and vegetables combination, but the raita could have been made better. It was sour and bitter, usually with Biryani, the raita that we have will be little on sweeter side to cool of the heat from Biryani. Shahi Korma was delicious! Even though I know this place has been here for a long time, this was my first visit. The food was SO GOOD. I had the leftovers for lunch a few days after visiting and they were still amazing. The staff was sweet and friendly. It's not a fancy place, but it felt intimate. Definitely will be back now that I know about this hidden gem. read more

Absolutely delicious! We got the chicken tikka as our appetizer, chicken was very juicy and it comes with a set of 3 dipping sauces ranging from sweet and spicy. I got the butter chicken this time, 6 spicy, which was indeed very hot! It's very similar to the chicken tikka masala from here, but I prefer the butter chicken because it is a bit more creamy and thick with the butter. The other dish was lamb with an almond and cashew sauce which was also tasty and had an almond-like taste. Our server was incredibly friendly as well. Love the Indian food here! read more

Eaten here many times ordered takeout. Food is wildly inconsistent. Tends to be too spicy and oily. Experienced extreme indigestion. The sauces are rich and oily, too much oil floating around. Avoid. This is not real Indian food. I've eaten Indian food in all major cities in the US Europe and India. The tikka masal has a strange taste. The bhindi is so oily it's inedible. My parents ate here in the nineties before going on a sailing tour. They too got severe indigestion as well and had to skip the sailing as they had to attend to their own personal digestive tour. This place has probably changed ownership several times. Maybe Nepalese or Bangladeshi chefs now? Regardless this place does a disservice to Indian food. Sad that this is what Mainers think is delicious Indian food. read more

Doesn't look like much from the outside and was pretty dead on a Friday night but we made the whole rounds all along the port area and couldn't get Indian food off our mind so we ended back there. Service was pretty ok but the food was fantastic! Samosas were hot and crispy, naan was perfect and we all loved that we could pick our own "heat" for the main dish. I loved the food it was super good but so over priced, three plates for almost 80 bucks is absurd. I recommend just ordering online and taking the food out to eat because the place felt dirty all the cups and plates had a weird egg smell, our table was sticky, it was just not an environment that makes you wanna eat.
