Soup, rice and 2 mains. $50 Mui Garden is famous for their curried brisket and Hainan chicken. We wanted to try their dry curry brisket--brisket is tender with curry sauce on the side. Not Rendang style...they just fry up the tasteless brisket and dip it into the sauce...disappointed! Second dish we had salt&pepper squid which taste good with all the garlic jalapeño bits but the thick batter had no taste at all. Watered down Red bean soup for dessert. Daily soup is mixed vegetable broth served piping hot. Restaurant is full, yet not too noisy maybe had good acoustics. Food is top notch. We ordered their two most popular items which are the Beef brisket curry on rice and the Hainan chicken and both were absolutely delicious. The beef brisket was very tender and the curry was flavorful and not too spicy. More on the sweeter/milder side compared to your traditional Malaysian curry. The Hainan chicken was outstanding. You know it's good when there's that jelly-like substance between the meat and the skin. Even the white meat was very moist. Comes with the typical red chili sauce, ginger/scallion sauce, and peanuts. The decor is a bit dated but everything seemed clean. Service was a hit or miss. We unfortunately encountered a very rude waitress who took our order. We already had our minds set on what to order but when we placed our order with her, she recommended that we get a set meal instead. When we took a while to peruse their rather confusing set menu and asked her questions, she grew visibly impatient and started making snarky remarks. So we told her we needed more time to look at the menu and ordered with another waitress instead and this one was much friendlier. Overall, the food here is excellent but be sure you're certain you know what you want to order before placing your order, otherwise you run the risk of being implicitly called dumb for not studying their confusing menu hard enough. This review is in between 3-4 stars. Mui Garden has been around for many many years. There is limited parking stalls on the ground floor but you can always go up the ramp for more parking on level 2. Don't expect any service from Mui Garden and I've always found the servers to be rather rude (yet they still expect their tips at the end...LMAO). I'm usually here for the exact same dishes: 1) Curry beef brisket - at $18, the portion was on the small side. There were only a couple pieces of beef. However, the taste itself is amazing and I'm already missing the taste as i write this post. The curry differs from other similar restaurant and I've been trying to find a cheaper alternative throughout the years but have had no luck finding one that is even comparable to Mui's version. Their version is creamy and has got a distinct taste to it. 2) Yang Chow fried rice - at $16, again, the portion was on the smaller side too when compared to competitors. I'm not a fan of fried rices but I can totally eat a plate of Mui's Yang Chow fried rice by myself! Mui has increased the prices by quite a lot since the last time I was here and I no longer think it's that affordable considering the portion they gave you. Plus I always have to deal with their poor customer service and it's not the first time that they'd throw the bill and changes at you. This place is a solid 3.5. Not fancy but clean and tasty. They use peanuts so if your party has peanut allergies be aware. Service is attentive and not rude. Food comes out quick. I was recommended to try this restaurant's beef curry so I stopped by and ordered #3 - Beef Curry Brisket on Rice. The curry was good and had a really nice coconut flavour to it. It didn't look like a lot of food or beef overall, but it was more than enough for one meal. The briskets were nice cuts of meat as well. It's very close to the busy intersection of No. 3 Rd. and Westminster Hwy, but you'd never know the restaurant is there if you just stuck to the main Rds. It's in a small building that has some parking up front and another 20 or so parking spots on the roof of the building. Went on a weekend for dinner and the place was crowded. Waited about 5-10 minutes for a table. Mid size restaurant, dated decor. The menu is large like most HK style cafes. You have noodles, rice, pasta, curry, and traditional Cantonese dishes as well. For dinner, you can get entree combos where you get 3 or more entree dishes and they'll throw in the daily soup and rice. We got the 4 dish combo, and tried their Hainan chicken, walnut shrimp, cod and tofu pot, and salt and pepper pork. All of them tasted pretty decent. Nothing stood out as being out of the ordinary delicious, but everything tasted as they were supposed to taste. Portions are not huge, but for the price it's fine. Initially, on our last day in Canada, we had planned to get dim sum and attempted to eat at a few places nearby; but we learned that it was Family Day and every dim sum place was packed. With that said, nothing else matters, but the Beef Curry! You have to get the beef curry! It's amazing and one of the best curries I've had. I had the Beef Brisket Curry Noodle Soup while my boyfriend had the Beef Brisket Curry with Rice. Curry had a thick, creamy texture with lots of flavor and the brisket was incredibly tender and juicy! YUM! On a cold day I was craving some noodle soup, so loved that I could enjoy the Beef Brisket Curry with rice noodles and a broth mixed with the curry, just what I needed and more. The beef brisket curry had yukon gold potatoes with, so was wonderful over a mound of rice! We weren't expecting much with Mui Garden Restaurant, but it served fantastic beef brisket curry with lots of other Chinese and Malaysian dishes. Mui Garden Last visit 3/29/19 After a few visits Pork, carrot & kidney bean soup (Chinese style). Perfectly salted, very clean tasting. Surprising since most Chinese restaurants the clear soups tend mild and underwhelming; this is in the tradition of the long simmering, more intensely flavoured soups. 3.75-4 stars. The Malaysian style beef brisket curry: very mild (non spicy) but delicious; the beef itself is very lean, gristle & fat free. The curry is very similar to Deer Garden's, not quite as coconutty but every bit as good (and large... We can never finish and always have about half leftover, at either restauarant). 4.5 stars. Stir fried fish (cod) with veggies (gai lan) was also spot on; fresh, perfectly cooked fish with fresh veggies (gai lan this time, 4.25-4.5 stars. We actually ordered pea tips (which are delicious and buttery here 4.5 stars) but as they were sold out, they graciously allowed us to add fish to gai lan. We ordered the dinner for 2 (you pick 2 dishes and they include rice and soup of the day).  We added 6 chicken satay sticks, which were also delicious and properly cooked (maybe a hair over, but with chicken you want slightly overcooked vs slightly under); it was nice having an entire plate with peanut sauce, fresh cucumber and pineapple. Satay sticks 4.25 stars. The dinner set also included dessert; most places offer hot red bean 'soup', which I don't care for (my wife does, but at most places it's too bland to enjoy); Mui Garden served us a sweet bean curd dessert, which she loved, and I found pleasant. 4 stars. Total bill for 2 was $55.40 after tax, before tips, but we had loads of leftovers. Pretty good value, and solid food (been here a few times, so far consistently good. Day. I only gave this place 4 stars instead of 5 stars because today's visit, the service was a bit unpleasant. The person that served us today was a bit rough and unfriendly. For Cantonese cuisine, this place is okay. We've been here a handful of times at the end of a day trip in Vancouver for some homey dishes. They offer a lot of "cha chaan tang" (cafe) items but for much higher prices. The main issue I have is their limited business hours. You have to eat dinner early in order to go here. Parking can also be kind of difficult. If you're a local, I'd probably come back more, but since I don't live in Canada (let alone Richmond) I don't think I will be returning much. read more

I was talking to my friend Grace about the delicious curry fish I've had at this restaurant and convinced her to go for lunch and taste their curry beef brisket. I used to love their curry fish but somehow I was disappointed that the taste of the curry fish had changed. It used to be that I couldn't get enough of the curry sauce to put on my rice and have left over fish. At that time, I would take the leftovers home and would ask if they can add more sauce. They won't oblige because they charge for additional sauce. Today, they served the curry beef brisket luke warm. After one bite, I called the waitress over and informed her that it is luke warm. So she took it back to reheat it. Came back steaming hot. Their curry sauce was flowing and at my first bite, I could tell it's mediocre. It didn't taste like before. So when the waitress came around to check how's the food, I told her it's not as good as before. She said it's the same curry sauce between the two dishes we ordered. NO NO NO. I love the taste of the curry fish before the pandemic. It was thick and tasted so good. Today, the sauce was runny and lacking. Not impressed at all. Came here for linner before the night market. Since it was 3 pm it wasn't as crowded as usual and we were able to get parking in front. If you can't park in front, there's parking on top of the building as well, just go around the corner. We got the 3 entree dinner option, which saved us some $$$ and came with a nice soup. Had the following: - Hai Nam Chicken Rice: Literally is just chicken and rice - but don't let the simplicity of this dish fool you. The chicken they use are a plumper, naturally flavorful variety that are par boiled. The chicken also comes with a delicious garlic+green onion sauce and a sweet + sour sauce, I prefer the latter. However, the key here is the rice - I really don't care much for the chicken... but combined with the rice, it's really addicting The rice is cooked with broth and oil from the chicken boiling the chicken, making it very savory (and slightly oily, but so good!). They give you a pretty generous pot, though if you're bigger than a group of 3 or 4 you may need a refill. I don't recommend taking the rice as leftovers, as it becomes rock solid the next day (though steaming + frying it helps put it back to its glory). - Sweet and Sour Pork: Honestly I don't care much for sweet and sour pork at other Chinese restaurants, but this place does a great job. The pork is crispy on the outside and tender inside. Also interesting is they seem to add longan in addition to pineapple chunks to it, which is really tasty with the sweet and sour sauce. - Stir fried green beans with minced pork: THIS IS MY CRACK. Haha, honestly it's really good. Very salty/garlicky/savory and it goes well with the Hai Nam chicken. They're generous with the amount of minced meat they put on it! - Wintermelon Soup: Since we had the dinner combo option, we got a large bowl of wintermelon soup to share. It tastes... healthy? It's light, not too salty and was a great break between our rich/savory dishes. Also wintermelon has this mellow taste, it's kind of hard to describe. Normally it comes with a side of salted/roasted nuts that you can dump into the soup, but I like eating those separately. Try their curry. It's amazing. We got the chicken curry to share. I only had the curry sauce to top my rice. It's so good, like homemade. Not one of the ingredients were overpowering the other. Then, while eating I noticed that they had awards for their curry! They have multiple awards up on their wall for their curry. It's definitely worth trying. I also had a tofu dish with mushrooms and shrimp. Normally, I don't like tofu but this was one silky and smooth so I thought to give it a try. Ended up happy I did and want to give tofu more love from me from now on. Their staff can speak English fluently and genuinely cared about their customers needs even if they were preoccupied. 3.5 Stars. I found it so hard to review this restaurant because I felt that my experience here was better than a lot of the Chinese cafes but honestly, it wasn't anything special. The food at Mui Garden is prepared with fresh ingredients and the restaurant itself is very clean and spacious. The staff are fairly polite and everything comes out quickly as well. Their classic dishes like the beef brisket curry on rice or their cheap toasted sandwiches are good, but I feel like they just aren't for me? I mean, it's a great deal because there are specials where you only have to add a dollar to get a bubble tea, but the food isn't actually that cheap if you want to get full and I honestly have to say that I wouldn't come back too often even though I live quite close by. I actually found my pork chop bun quite disappointing since the french bread was far too hard and chewy while there wasn't enough filling to justify the amount of bread that was given to me. The fries were excellent though and tasted like the ones that you can get at the costco cafeteria. Anyways, come here for the curry but don't expect too much out of the other dishes! read more

If you've ever been around the Victoria Drive area near East 41st Avenue, you've probably seen the popular HK Style Cafe known as Mui Garden. As it turns out, they also have a Richmond location (they had another location on Main Street that closed out last year). The Minoru Blvd location is a bit hidden from the street as the entrance is on Firbridge way (1 block north of Westminster Hwy). We stopped by for lunch on the weekend and the place was fairly busy. As with the Victoria Drive location, service is curt and to the point. Our first dish was the Baked Pork Chop with tomato sauce on rice ($12). Mui does a good job of preparing the tender bone-in pork chop. Mui Garden is known for their curry so I ordered the Curry Beef Brisket on Rice ($10.50) which was delivered in an overflowing bowl. This isn't a spicy curry but it is so good! The beef brisket was perfectly tender and was accompanied by a large chunk of potato. You really need to eat this with rice to sop up all of the glorious curry sauce. After we finished, it took a bit to flag someone down for our bill (they only accept cash or debit). My partner also told me that their hainanese chicken is bomb but since we got decided to go with the dinner combo ($32) with 2 dishes, rice, soup and salad we opted for the green beans with minced meat as our second dish. We got to choose from oil rice or regular steamed rice and we both went with the oil. The beef brisket was nice and tender (5/5) and the curry was thick and flavourful. The oil rice itself was yummy. I didn't need anything else. The green beans tasted good (4/5) but it was a bit tough and I'm used to being spoiled with young green beans. The dessert we got was the bean sheet soup dessert which tasted ok. The melon soup wasn't that good in my opinion but overall and pretty decent and filling meal for a set price. Mui Garden, some of the worst customer service I've ever recieved and most disrespectful staff I've most certainly encountered in my life. - Boy was that a mouthful! And I hadn't even taken a bite of any of their food. I'm sure as many of you have read in previous reviews, "I genuinely wish I could give zero stars". My girlfriend and I were out in Richmond with a taste for something different than our usual Chinese/Malay dinner spots and thought we'd give Mui Garden a shot. From the above I'm sure you know how this tale goes. So first off upon arrival we were told by one of the staff members that based on our appearance, we wouldn't be able to fit in the booth. I mean I may have added a couple pounds over the summer but there was no problem whatsoever with the seating situation. Just rude! Then we were asked if we'd like water or tea, apparently we aren't allowed to have both though cause this is their restaurant and their rules so the customer in this case is always wrong. At this point I'd had enough, I'm not going to be made fun of and told what I can and can't drink when I'm paying to enjoy a meal out. End of the day, I'm glad to have visited this place as now I can warn others to stay far away. Dined at Mui Garden last weekend for dinner. This is a casual dining restaurant that offers HK cafe fare alongside traditional Chinese cuisine. It is located off Westminster Highway near Richmond Centre. Part of a building complex, there is fairly limited parking right in front. You may be able to find some street parking here, but there is also parking on the roof of the building. Yes, the roof. Be careful heading up and down. Roof parking is quite tight. I would not recommend it unless you are good at parking. The restaurant has a mix of tables and booths and has two dining rooms it appears.Got a booth by the window. The restaurant is bright lit with TVB playing on the LCD TV in the front. The menu is quite lengthy. Decided to go for the regular Chinese fare. They have a deal where you can choose two dishes from a large list which comes with soup, rice and a dessert for $26. Add $13 more for each dish/set that you would like to get. Thus, 4 would be $52 and 6 would be $78. Got a mixed meat hot pot, Hainan chicken and a fried rock cod in corn soup dish for $39. It came with a pork bits soup that kind of resembled ham in look, but not in taste. This meal is supposed to be for three, but it could definitely feed four. The hot pot has an array of meats including pork kidney. I decided to skip this as it is a bit too adventurous for me, but I liked this dish otherwise. The Hainan chicken comes with a side of roasted peanuts and two dipping sauces. Usually I don't eat this dish, but seeing it was a signature dish of the restaurant, I decided to give this a try. It turned out to be good. My issue with this dish is that sometimes there is a lack of flavor, but no such problem in this case. I thought the fried cod dish a bit odd. I think it would have been fine to eat fried cod alone. Mixing it with creamy corn seemed unnecessary and a bit overindulgent. I like Mui Garden food wise, but the service here was horrenduous during my visit. It was difficult to flag someone down to order and pay. After posting a short review about Mui Garden on Zomato, I was craving their Beef Curry again, so decided to have it for dinner. Mui Garden is a Hong Kong style cafe that has different types of Chinese (more like Cantonese), Malaysian and Singaporean dishes. I used to get their Beef Curry only, but today I wanted to write a more detailed review so ordered some more. So for my b-i-g appetizer, I got their one of signature dishes Hainan Chicken (Whole $25, Half $13.50) - 4.0/5.0. It was my first time trying this type of chicken. Unlike its plain looking... it tasted amazingly good. The meat absorbed the sauce very well, and the meat was somewhat chewy and soft at the same time. Hainan chicken tastes even better with the dipping sauce - fresh ginger, scallions and vegetable oil as the base. Their Chicken Rice - 4.0/5.0 is pretty good too. It's basically the long grain rice cooked with chicken broth. It's just as aromatic as the chicken. Pan Fried Sliced Beef and Rice Noodle ($10) - 3.5/5.0 had more beef slices than the noodles! They are really generous when it comes to the portion. Not too oily and the noodle wasn't too soggy. The bean sprouts were still crunchy. Nicely cooked. Finally, my favourite dish Beef Brisket Curry ($12.50)! - 3.5/5.0. I'd given this dish 4.0/5.0 but today their curry was too salty to the point I was thinking of putting some water in it... I wish no one tries their saltier version of the beef curry seriously. When it's properly cooked (usually they are!) it tastes amazing! It's very creamy and rich in flavours with huge chunks of beef briskets and potatoes. This type of curry (I guess Malaysian) doesn't have strong, pungent smells or spices so I can enjoy even more. This dish contains a lot of fatty coconut milk so you would get easily full. I finished a half still. Overall, it was very satisfying lazy Saturday dinner. I almost danced while eating. I am going to finish the rest of the chicken if I get hungry tonight - I will be. PROS + Their food tastes really good and seems very authentic too + A variety of food + When you crave either Malaysian, Cantonese or Singaporean dishes just go to Mui Garden + Very generous portion at cheap prices CONS - Beef curry today wasn't too good.. so sad! This place is nothing really special. Food: 7/10 Service: 8/10 Atmosphere: 7/10 We had the 'oily rice' which was unique for a restaurant to serve (imo) and the service was ok. Feels like a regular old Chinese restaurant, but the food service was super fast. I highly recommend their Curry tho. Probably the best one I've ever had. It's Malaysian and it tasted really good, especially if you pair it with the oily rice. My buddies and I usually come here for a group dinner, so we do come here quite frequently. read more
