This is a big hospital to go do tests in. You will need to get clearance to go in to do tests. I had to get a take home sleep test. Going to sleep center is a basic cardio walk. I am not complaining because I take a cardio walk a few times a week. So I will log this in. Enough of this cardio walk stuff. When I got there, I had to go to a door with a door bell. I did a ring. A bit later a tech came to get me. I felt glad it was a familiar face because just a bit ago my husband had to complete the same test. It was just like completing a review. I am happy that I get the same test. It is very easy. It is very small and compact. It is a few small pieces to put on plus a watch device. The instructions was much easier than finding the place. The tech name was Danielle. If you get her, she will make you laugh. I enjoyed her very much. read more

Overall, I chose this hospital over others. However, after several visits over the past couple of years due to my grandmother's health, I've noticed a consistent issue. There seem to be frequent handoffs among staff--whether during lunch breaks or shift changes. At times, the incoming nurses or technicians did not appear to be fully briefed on the patient's situation. This sometimes resulted in staff entering the room without a clear understanding of what had already occurred or what the next steps in care were. Because my grandmother is nearly 90 years old, this lack of seamless communication has been concerning. There were moments when it felt like a mistake could easily happen simply because information was not clearly passed along. While the staff have generally been kind and attentive, improving closed-loop communication during handoffs could help ensure continuity of care and provide families with greater confidence in the process. read more

I have gone back and forth about writing this, but after my most recent visit, I cannot stay silent. I am a Black woman living with sickle cell disease and multiple intersecting identities. That reality already means navigating pain, fatigue, and unpredictable medical crises. What should not be part of that reality is feeling dismissed, stigmatized, and dehumanized while seeking emergency care. During my most recent and dare I say final, visit to Tacoma General , I arrived in a sickle cell pain crisis with escalating pain, chest tightness, severe fatigue, temperature fluctuations, and headache -- symptoms that can signal life-threatening complications such as acute chest syndrome. Despite repeatedly reporting worsening symptoms, I waited for hours with minimal reassessment and little communication about my care. What was most alarming was not the wait itself, but the way my condition was framed and discussed. At one point, while I was actively reporting chest pain and worsening symptoms, Dr. Kyle McClain, the attending I was assigned to at the ER introduced the idea of a "pain contract." The timing and context of this discussion felt inappropriate and a stigmatizing micro aggression. Instead of focusing on the urgent clinical picture, the conversation shifted toward opioid policy. For patients with sickle cell disease, a condition historically undertreated and burdened by stigma - this framing can feel accusatory rather than protective. Let me be clear: I have NEVER misused my prescribed medications. I follow my treatment plan, including monthly blood exchanges. The suggestion of additional scrutiny during an active crisis felt less like safety protocol and more like an assumption rooted in systemic bias. At a previous hospital visit last October. I advocated for my pain to be taken seriously, Dr. Jeffrey Schaefer alluded to the idea that I, a sickle cell patient and warrior who strongly advocated for myself was seeking "special treatment." This framing is deeply troubling. Expecting evidence-based, timely treatment for a documented medical crisis is not special treatment, it is appropriate care. Statements like this reinforce the harmful stereotype that sickle cell patients must prove the legitimacy of their pain. These interactions did not occur in isolation. They exist within a broader pattern that many sickle cell patients experience: * delayed pain management * skepticism toward reported pain * stigmatizing assumptions about opioid needs * lack of urgency despite known complications * emotional exhaustion from constant self-advocacy As a Black woman with a chronic illness, these experiences exist at the intersection of race, gender, and disability. The cumulative effect is not simply frustration, it is medical trauma. I want to acknowledge that emergency departments are overwhelmed and many healthcare workers provide compassionate care under extreme pressure. This review is not an attack on individuals working within a strained system. However, systemic issues and provider bias must be addressed if care for sickle cell patients is to improve. Patients in crisis should NOT have to fight to be believed. We should not be made to feel criminalized for needing pain control. We should not be forced to choose between suffering silently and being labeled difficult. I urge Tacoma General to consider: * enhanced training on sickle cell crisis management * education on bias and stigma in pain treatment * improved adherence to evidence-based guidelines * implementation of individualized crisis care protocols * communication practices that center dignity and respect No patient should leave an emergency department feeling invisible, dismissed, or stigmatized while seeking care. We deserve timely treatment. We deserve to be heard. We deserve dignity. And we deserve better! read more

We came to Tacoma General after my partner was in a mountain bike accident, and I'm incredibly grateful for the care we received. From the nurses to the doctors to every staff member we encountered, the kindness, calm, and attentiveness made such a difference during a really scary time. I would never recommend this hospital to a loved one. The level of care for how 'concerned for my health' they were did not match up. In addition to having Covid and pneumonia, being dangerously low on electrolytes, and having a miscarriage - you'd think they'd care to check in on how their patients are doing. I haven't seen my nurse for going on over 7 hours. I saw my Doctor the most today (twice) for a span of a whole 20 minutes. The doctor in training? Only saw them once for less than 15 minutes. I miscarried in a room by myself because my doctors didn't care to check in on me. If I ever have to go to a Hospital again, you can bet if I have a choice it'll be anywhere but MultiCare Tacoma General. read more

I am a recently retired MD and practiced in Tacoma for 35 years. By comparison, previous care at St. Joseph was good but this, my first time to TGH, is a disappointment. Care was slow and there was not a bed in the ED so I laid on the concrete floor from 5pm until 1:30 am. Getting a medication for pain took an exorbitant amount of time and typically 3 requests and then well over half an hour. I am not Catholic and I don't have any special ties to St. Joe's to recommend it - this is my experience. I would avoid Tacoma General Hospital if at all possible. Many of the staff were excellent and compassionate but often problems like this stem from poor leadership and la k of oversight. read more

From not giving correct medication to patient, to the treatment received from many nurses, staff, and doctors we are disgusted with the treatment our family member received. The bad treatment outweighs the few caring providers. We had to go to the patient advocate and house manager to keep our family member safe and humanely treated. Poor case managers. Intake nurse was very rude and unhelpful both times I came in. The ambulance brang me in for a possible neurological episode, I explained to Drs I was in and out of it while sleeping and my body was trembling while my eyes were rolling back without any control. After a couple minutes of that happened I was very confused and dialed 911 after advised to be the VA nurse hotline. I was never even taken back into the ER. I was given electrolytes and my vitals were taken. No EEG and no brain MRI. That following week a had 2 similar neurological episodes but refused to go to Tacoma General because why would I go to the ER if I'm just going to be sent back to wait in the waiting room for 6 hours and given electrolytes. I needed to get labs done on Sunday & the hospital was the nearest location so off I went. Typically I visit the Lakewood location. With orders on file, free parking it was my best experience! Also, no line! Quality care! Clean! Friendly! When you walk in there's a mini checkpoint & give you a mask.. Multicare Home health has managers JH and KM who treat employees like dirt. They are not respectful and play favorites to certain nurses making e cases for them and the nurse JM negligence. Reporting concerns does nothing they only say..that's how she is...when pts are put in jeopardyfrom this nurses negligence and causing I fections with pts as well as unprofessional conduct. Reported to mmngt who turned away from reported pt and family concerns. Stay away from those managers and this supposed agency. Anyone should be able to go to an emergency room and feel safe, free of discrimination and malice, to receive a professional standard of medical care. This was not the case when I arrived at the Tacoma General ER at approximately midnight, then leaving at approximately 7:30 am, after 7 arduous hours of incredibly substandard care, rights violations, and flat-out cruelty. Overall, it took over seven hours for them to inform me of what was wrong with me, a ruptured ovarian cyst, before refusing treatment and care, and lying to security to have them force me from the emergency room. I have never experienced abdominal pain, or any pain, like this in my life (accompanied by vomiting, fever spike, and intense nausea before coming into the ER), and was treated with no humanity or dignity. My pain and questions about my health and patients rights were visibly laughed at on multiple occasions by those mentioned above, as well as those that refused to provide identification, including a male RN, and a member of the ER intake staff. My fiance' was laughed at and had questions dismissed and ignored too. During my stay in the TG ER, the staff violated multiple WAC 246-320-141 Patient rights and organizational ethics components, as well as violated most of the patient rights outlined in the Washington Hospital Healthcare System Patient Rights. Ultimately, they refused to treat me when I told them I would not consent to being injected with opiates. They did not provide any alternative. I later saw the notes they put in my patient MyChart; these are filled with blatant lies, about myself, and about their course of action/inaction. My fiance' is witness to everything that happened, including discrimination via multiple avenues, again, which should be protected against according to patient rights afforded by WAC 246-320-141 and the Washington Hospital Healthcare System Patient Rights. This whole experience just goes to show how much apathy has plagued and negatively impacted the U.S. and WA state healthcare systems, especially when it comes to women's reproductive health. read more

The people in the reception area of the Emergency Department are cold fish. I came in with abdominal pain of 9/10 due to an ulcer that had been eating a hole in my belly for days. I was crying and wailing and was ignored. Then I felt my ulcer perforate the wall of my digestive tract and leak acid into my peritoneal area. The referred pain often feels like it is going over to my right side and under my right scapula. I told them about the progression of the ulcer and they looked at me like I had two heads. I'm sure nothing about a perforated ulcer made it to a nurse or doctor. read more

The care that I received from Dr. Krishnadasan and staff was amazing and my nurse on the ward Lindsay is far and away the finest nurse I have ever worked with, and I have had some great ones. Thankfully this was my last appointment, I moved to Moses Lake last year. Dr. Irwin is good, but the Multicare Health System is poor, hence the low rating. Is it the Insurance problem or staffing??? Positives: ER staff, Multi Care surgeons, and IC Unit doing all they can for patients and families. The following complaint was addressed by Valet management and the Patient & Family Relations Department. Both called me back within 24hrs. after I left messages. Certainly was thankful for that. :-) Negatives: 1) the construction that inconveniences patients and families; 2) the VALET/CONCIERGE personnel working at the MLK entrance are disrespectful, unaccommodating, and unwelcoming to patients and families needing assistance. I was told repeatedly by Donna, the concierge lead attendant (in front of the security officer) to bring the wheelchair back after taking my mom up to wound care. I find that to be unaccommodating and disrespectful due to the fact there were other attendants on duty who could have gone up to get the wheelchair within the timeframe my mother was at her appointment. (Fortunately, an attendant came up to the wound care floor, bringing another patient. I asked that attendant to take back the wheelchair on their way down.) Obviously, there aren't enough wheelchairs to accommodate patients, nor do the concierge employees demonstrate hospitality or concern for patients/family caregivers. read more

The Second floor staff and Security staff: One if not the best hospital in the pierce county area! The nursing staff, including the surgeon who removed my wife's severely deteriorated gallbladder, were extremely pleasant,professional and absolutely incredible!! They were attentive and very informative, not to mention patient!! The Security staff was awesome!! They were very interpersonal and very professional, they went above and beyond their duties to assure me an area I could relax stress free from having to lounge in the hospital rooms corridor. During my wife's procedure. I felt secure and confident with the hospital staff (including the security staff) I had enough to worry about at that moment. It relieved me to know they cared!! My daughter was treated very poorly.The staff was cruel to her.She and her fiance wore masks the whole time which they always do when needed.No one there was doing this,even nurses and doctors during the exam.Was this discrimination?Yes. The staff made her wait 6 hours,while others were taken ahead of her .The massive pain she was in was addressed by giving her opiates[morphine] which she refused and asked for something else.Staff wrote up a record of the visit and accused her of refusing care ! Staff was kind and super efficient with time. Boy does this staff handle a lot. I witnessed a man make a fool of himself coming off super disrespectful and demanding, and the hospital staff handled it with ease. It was very full when I came in. It was a trauma day so several patients were being assisted within the waiting room since hospital beds and rooms were full. The only thing that was concerning to me was a receipt of my paperwork. There was so many errors. Nurse documented things I never said (assumptions) and incorrectly documented things I did say. I know they are busy and want to get documentation done ASAP, but it really is important to listen and document correctly. Due to so many errors in my paperwork, I wonder if I should reach out to records to make the corrections. read more

I am finally out of pain, and I can't recommend the surgical team and nurses enough. They were caring and compassionate, and they actually listened to me to ensure that my concerns were heard. While I hope I never have to undergo surgery again, if I do, I know I can trust Tacoma General. Swelling and inflammation from a hernia and infection and instead of doing the surgery to fix it they decided to treat it with drugs and sent me home 2 weeks later and not 5 days after i got back home the swelling and inflammation has returned. So the surgeons just decided instead of a permanent solution just to do a temporary one with drugs. read more

Then try to justify it too her family whom already stated too not do that. the side affects are greater with dementia. Than argue with the family and try too put the blame on them. My experience for the last six months of treatment at TGH has been stellar. Everything from the schedule coordinators, the physicians, nurses, aides and their financial navigators have been of great service to me. I had a five day stay at Allenmore Hospital, their sister facility and that was the best hospital service I have ever experienced. I have found that the front line workers, all to be professional and content employees who are not afraid to express their unique personalities while working - is the right combination for me. Already faced with some scary challenges, during Covid19 no less, has been especially trying for me. Dr Masood, Dr. Stevens, Dee, Franetta, Dr. Levitan and Betsy in social services are helping me cope and even put some lightness and humor which gives me more encouragement to stay on a healthy path. Lastly, we utilized their financial Navigator, Diana and she was able to provide us with much needed and appreciated assistance for my care. I am having surgery soon and afterward I will update this review again. For now, I am very confident I am at the right facility for me - and I am an avid researcher when it comes to my healthcare choices. read more

8 days and 7 nights in this hospital. Every day was grueling. Over staffed and no one helping the patients out of ICU. The bed had another patient's blood on the underside of the bed. The sink smelled of mildew. The toilet had rings of mildew around it and the shower stall was scary. I had to spray lysol everywhere. I was seriously afraid to touch anything. Each Doctor that came into the room never addressed the parent with any kind of direction or update. The Nurses station was overstaffed and no management around. They played at will. Patient in the next room was throwing things at the wall to get the nurses attention to help with his pain medication. It took hours for the medication to be given. It took help from an outsider to get the care these patients needed. This is my experience and my opinion from an awful experience. Never again. read more

Deceptive business practices. My wife had simple iron infusions done and was told it would be between $250-$275 per infusion. Once we received the bill, it showed that they charged that amount for only the medication, and another $1380 for each visit for hooking her up to an IV. She received infusions at another clinic and that portion was only charged $180 each infusion. Now we are stuck with a $5000 medical bill and they WILL NOT BUDGE. We have called 15-20 times over the past few months, and it is so difficult to find someone to talk to who knows what they are doing. They are asking us to submit for financial aid - the issue is with telling us one price, and charging something completely different after the fact. How can they possibly charge $1380 to hook someone up to an IV, and walk away for 30 minutes. Such a scam. Stay away from MultiCare - every other infusion clinic has been reasonable. read more

A one star rating is too high of a rating for the ultrasound tech in the radiology department that I seen this morning. She was the most rude person I have encountered thus far at Multicare. I said good morning to her and her response was, " phones need to be off back here!" I was in the waiting room and was trying to put my phone in my purse, I wasn't using it in anyway. Every instruction she gave me was rude. She started my ultrasound and then proceeded to question whether or not I followed my doctors instructions (the date to return) for this follow up ultrasound, which I did. She made comments about how she "couldn't see anything". I am overweight, but there was no need to make me feel worse about it, it wouldn't help her get better pictures by making me feel poorly. She didn't talk to me or explain anything she was doing except for the criticisms I explained above. I can't even explain how horrible she made me feel. I let the silent tears run as she did the ultrasound. She is the reason I will not ever return to this department at this location. read more

Everytime I have an interaction with 90% of multiscare employees it is a negative experience. It is especially prevalent within the ER staff. It is obvious that the culture of multiscare, which starts at the top and trickles down - thus permeating the entirety of the employee base, is NOT client centered! I happen to work at an inpatient crisis clinic and would be fired in a heartbeat if I pulled 1/16th of the crap these medical facilities do.
