1891 Restaurant. It's not open to non-club members, we were guests of our good friends. It far exceeded our expectations, just excellent overall. The a la Grivois cocktail started the experience on a high note: amaro and vermouth together make for a velvety sweetness. The house green soup was a winner, I'm sure the French Onion would be also. We were there for prime rib night and their version rivals that at Clyde's: a hearty cut and full of flavor. At first glance, I was disappointment to see scalloped-type potatoes, but these were the best I've had. The warm bread and salad were above par. Always a good time. So excited to try the ice cold plunge on my visit. Hitting up the sauna steam room and jacuzzis this ice plunge bath was addicting and my sis mom and I made a competition out of how long we could stay in. Yeah just one minute til our bits got cold and on in to the jacuzzi we went for everything started tickling and pins and needles feeling. And once I warmed up I had to jump right back in the ice plunge. The. After all that relaxations and jolts it was time to shower and enjoy a Smith's tea over in the tea lounge while staring out into the soccer field. I went to buy some Smith's Tea on 23rd for my mom to take back to the East Coast as she decided Portland Brunch was her new favorite tea variety and turns out you get a discount with a MAC membership. So my family are not members at MAC. This place is amazing though. It is spacious and is connected to Providence Park. I wasn't aware of this. It has multiple dining options. It's basically like a Vegas Gym without the slot machines. Tonight my family was invited by an employee (thank you Robbie) as dinner guests. The kids and I got a mini tour around the facility and I walked around and looked at all the cool art and statues before dinner. Dinner was quite nice. I got the cheeseburger (add bacon), the kids got Mac and cheese and others got the chicken. As for my dinner, i ordered the burger medium rare, and it was cooked perfectly. The juices were flowing out of the burger, but the roll was able to stand up to it. The burger was 10/10 and the fries were crisp and tender. All in all a very enjoyable meal. read more

It's hard to describe this place in a post or written description. You really have to see it in person to really appreciate it. One of the premier clubs in the country. I have been fortunate to be a member for many years and see its evolution over about a decade since my first visit. The size of the club is extraordinary. There is literally something for everyone! The real benefit is the plethora of amenities for kids... I wish I had been a member here as a child. The staff here is amazing and their contributions cannot be understated. Special shout outs to Molly at Joes, Emily at the front desk, Ellen at At Your Service, Drew in Outdoors and Kristin in childcare. You could spend all day here and never run out of things to do! My only wish is that they had a separate, designated coffee bar. I love that there is a parking structure adjacent to the club and so many events going on all year long. The members are generally pleasant here; it's hard to have a bad way when you're at the MAC. Members can bring unlimited social guests but there is a limit on how many times you can bring athletic guests. Definitely find a member to sponsor your first visit and experience the marvelous nature of this place yourself. You won't regret it! read more

I attended the crabfest at the MAC with a member and can I say hands down, best crab buffet offered in Portland! The visual presentation was 100/10. Some menu highlights - unlimited crab, prime rib, paella, beautiful salad and roasted vegetables, clam chowder, dessert bar and made to order bananas foster. The service was also excellent-they provided hot towels to wipe your hands, bar service, and they cleared plates consistently as you revisited the buffet. The crab and prime rib were their STARS of the show, lots of butter, cocktail sauce, an jus and horseradish. They thought of everything! I've been 3 times and this dinner is so consistent and delicious for the price! read more

I'm a 26 year old, female legacy intermediate member, and I've been debating whether to let my membership go. When you turn 26, you can typically either initiate (meaning you pay an initiation fee and higher, more frequent dues), move to nonresident status, or leave. For months I've seriously considered leaving and I've looked at other gyms in the SW Portland and Beaverton areas. Here's why I've considered leaving: - There's not much of an appeal for single members in their twenties post college. - Most of the members in the Fitness Room are either school aged (14-22), middle aged, or in retirement. - It's crazy expensive. I don't think I can lay out the numbers. The initiation fee is the cost of a used car. The monthly dues are *easily* 3x more than other gyms. - Some of the members are ridiculously rude. As in, they won't stop for pedestrians and won't stop at stop signs in the parking lot. Some can be incredibly possessive and entitled about equipment and their "spot" during workout classes. *Spoiler alert* Those are only *some* members and you'll find people like that anywhere else. I've done lots of online research and went to Crunch Fitness Beaverton and the 24 Hour Fitness in downtown PDX near the Wells Fargo building. Here's why I've decided to stay: - I feel safe and respected here especially by the staff, who are always professional and friendly. - I don't have to worry about being scammed with fees and payments. - The equipment and facility are top notch. You don't have to worry about broken equipment sitting unfixed for long or going unnoticed. - Nice perk: most of the treadmills have their own screens so you can watch TV, plus they have a giant screen with multiple TVs. - Parking hasn't been an issue on weekday evenings during COVID, and I don't think it will be since I'm guessing a lot of the members will be able to work remote/hybrid. - There are multiple staff members in most of the areas, like the Fitness Area, rock climbing, etc. - Customer service is amazing. The front desk staff are consistently super helpful, friendly and professional. They kindly enforce the rules and standards. Fitness staff are also friendly and welcoming. - I've never felt unsafe with the members. You can also request to have security walk you to your car. I learned that, sadly, there is no "middle class" gym. You either have the Crunch and 24 Hour Fitnesses, or you have the MAC and OrangeTheories. The MAC has essentially anything you need. At this club, there really is more of an interactive, community feel. While it is incredibly exclusive and pricey, unfortunately that's the way the "fitness market" is with the extreme high end and low end. For me, the difference in financial cost is worth feeling safe and respected. The nice thing is that once you're a member, the family dues aren't that expensive per person compared to single member dues. It really has everything most people could think of, including towels. Apparently towels aren't offered at most gyms these days... The MAC has done a fantastic job at staying safe and clean during COVID, even reducing dues while closed. Obviously it still needs money to take care of the facilities and very well deserving employees. One area for improvement is their DEI initiatives. They have come a long way from discriminating and excluding minorities, and I am happy to see them continue to grow. Keep it up, MAC! read more

My Mom was a swimming coach for this club and also swam on their team in the early 1950s. I'd always heard that they kept meticulous personnel records and offered membership benefits to family of former employees. I lived right across the street from them and always had a good relationship with them from a property management standpoint. One of my residents was a member, so she and I went to lunch there one day and went to their human resources department to check on the situation. It was really fun to see my Mom's name on the computer and talk about the membership benefits. I believe they waived the initial membership fee. The MAC Club is an old Portland institution dating back in origin to the 1890s I believe. It is also very expensive and definitely out of my league, but at least I could have been a contender! read more

One of my dear acquaintances had an unfortunate experience at the Multnomah Athletic Club, and today I will share that experience with the people of yelp. At the ripe age of 9, my acquaintance participated in a summer camp at the MAC. My acquaintance herself is not a member of the club, but she was able to take part in the program because one of her friends was. Her father is a construction worker and took her every morning. The snooty snoots at the clurb LITERALLY PATTED HIM DOWN all five days he dropped his young impressionable child off. This is outrageous behavior. I would give it a 15 on the scale of 1- ludicrous. These people saw her father for a full week and every day patted him down because he was wearing construction clothes, like i'm sorry it wasn't Ralph Lauren??? Anyway Joe's tastes bad, the mac dances feature an overwhelming amount of Brandy Melville, and there is not a single person on this planet that could tell you what proper elevator attire is. It's a nice place but if you are there for an event, you have to park far away...if you are there for an event more than likely you are wearing a business suit, heals and when it's raining not fun to have to park far away from the actual club. I strongly urge you to stay far away from this place run by completely incompetent staff! My daughter took a lifeguard training class there 2 years ago and they did not correctly file her paperwork. They cashed my check for $245, she passed the class and test but now when she needs to recertify (lifeguard training needs recertification every 2 years) they have "no record of her ever taking the class". This means they never turned in the paperwork for her certification! She has been working as a lifeguard for almost 2 years!! This is a legal liability and poor management. I have left at least 10 messages to the management and no one knows anything. It is ridiculous and dangerous. Do not risk it! read more

We attended a fundraiser here this past week, so our exposure to the whole place is probably less then complete. The food was good, the staff seemed pretty aloof. Security is also less then consistent on who they ask "where are you going?". My observation over a few minutes was that white guys made it through easy, women were asked more often. Maybe not surprising when you consider where youre at. One thing that really struck me though is that for a place that is so expensive, the architecture and general design seemed more like an Applebee's then a place that would cost most people 2-3 months of wages just to join, not to mention 10x the normal gym costs. Based on my experience, I think the space would be much better utilized as additional Timbers/Thorns seating. Think of all the extra seats we could cram in there?! RCTID! That's all. read more

This place is THE exclusive member only venue in Portland. It's old and some of the rules are played out but that's what's good about it. Yes it costs an arm in a leg to join, and you have to be a selected in a lottery, that's what's so great about it. The food is awesome, (monthly member perks!) and the drinks are discounted. My favorite is the Blue Goose Martini found in the men's bar! I can't wait to watch a Beaver game out in the patio!! On another note, if you have kids this is the place, because during the fall and winter the MAC has family fun nights every Friday! This is where adult can enjoy wine and cocktails while socializing with other parents and friends. read more

We had a group holiday party here in a private dining room. We do this yearly, and it has been good up until this last party. Drinks....$13?????Really.....for 50cents worth of liquor. Dinner was served family style but they brought out everything pretty much together....the charcuterie plate was only to the 3rd person at the table when they brought out 2 salads.....before those were passed around they brought out chicken (tough), what they wanted to look like steak (pot roast that had been seared on the ends), potatoes, beans, and then to follow all that up, they brought out a caesar salad. It was awful looking at all that food on the table, being rushed to eat....it was like they couldn't get us out of there fast enough.....hope we go somewhere else next year. read more

ok, after two kids and many more experiences at the MAC I'm really enjoying it-- they have great restaurants at reasonable prices, and wonderful wonderful activities for kids-- we've been doing their family Fridays as well as the summer camps, and the level of instruction and attention is second to none....hence the high cost of membership. there is an amazing women's lockerroom with hot tub and dry sauna and steam room, the towel service is fantastic, and they offer nanny memberships so our nanny can take the kdis to their lessons and activities. As a kid, my sister and I spent endles hours entertaining ourselves, taking classes, doing homework at, and eventually 'working out' at this club-- definitely it felt like a 'second home'. I'm all grown up now and am not an active member, and live in SoCal...But when I was planning my wedding last year up there, I thought the MAC club would be the perfect place for our rehearsal dinner (my dad is still a member) and to host all of our out-of-town guests. It was over-the-top special, thanks to the banquet and event coordination done by Shaun Perry there (sorry Shaun, I don't remember your title exactly). He made it so much more beautiful and special than I even hoped (or asked!) for and because of him, the rehearsal dinner there was my favorite event besides 'our vows' of that time. The food was fantastic also, and Shaun helped me select really yummy options from the expansive menu. To be upfront: this review of the MAC is based on a wedding reception we attended last year as well as our interaction with a staff member as we searched for a wedding venue ourselves. I have no knowledge of the MAC as an exercise facility but we were so happy with our two experiences I felt I needed to acknowledge them publicly. Last year my friend held her wedding reception at the MAC (note: you must be a member or know a member). It was gorgeous. Excellent staff, great food, and easy transitions throughout the evening. Aside from a slight mix-up with alcohol, my friend was very happy with her reception and felt well taken care-of. Over the past few weeks my fiance and I have been looking for wedding venues, and the MAC came up as an option. Although it was ultimately out of our budget, the coordinator with whom we worked - Kayley - was extremely helpful and professional. She was willing to provide different options and scenarios at different budget points, and when we informed her that we were going to search elsewhere she was gracious and glad we had been able to solidify our budget to meet our needs. If you belong to the MAC or know a member there, consider calling them for information about a wedding ceremony or reception! read more

I only go here for networking meetings but the facility is beautiful and the staff has always been very helpful. The typical clientele is a little uppidy but I just smile and keep on going! The food is always very well displayed and tasty, and the staff refills and cleans continuously. If you are looking for a place for a banquet, large meeting, reception... I was able to try out the MAC as a guest because a friend is a member there. Let me rephrase, he inherited the membership because his family have been MAC members for ages. I can't think of another place that's so exclusive in Portland, which really gave me high expectations for this place. I wouldn't necessarily describe the MAC as a high-tech, cutting edge facility. Rather, it's very understated but the decor and uniformed staff reminds me of a fancy hotel rather than an athletic club and you can tell no expense has been withheld to give their members a comfortable environment to get their fitness on. My favorite features are the crystal clear pools which have a balcony area for onlookers. I also noticed a couple restaurants/cafes that I didn't have a chance to check out, but can easily see how someone could spend a whole day at the MAC. Overall, I'm impressed by the MAC but will stick with 24 Hour Fitness for now...at least until I get the magical invite to become a MAC member. :) read more

I've been a member since I was a kid (I'm 25 now). I absolutely love the environment and the people here. I used to go to the camps, play on the volleyball team, and use the pool on a pretty regular basis. Now, I mostly just use the weight room/fitness center and do personal training with Derek Kirkland. He's the BEST trainer, although they are all incredibly nice and friendly. I love the MAC because it's clean and the amenities are fantastic. MAC snacks (which is now Joe's) has been remodeled and its kid friendly and again, pretty darn clean. The locker rooms are great as well. I just love coming here. Not to mention the amazing view onto Providence Park watching soccer and what used to be PGE Park watching the baseball games. I just had a baby girl and can't wait to use the facilities for day care and put her into the camps. The staff is trustworthy, friendly, and actually take their time with kids. That's super important to me and I love that they can have fun while I use the gym. Some of the rules and regulations are outrageous but for the most part, I am lucky to be apart of such an amazing environment. read more

I've been a member for over 10 years now and no other club can compare in my mind. Yes it's expensive, but you're paying for a TON of stuff. There's free workout classes, a giant workout room, stretching room, smaller workout room, renovated lockerooms, 3 pools, adult-only spaces, multiple restaurants, meeting rooms and banquet halls, a library, special viewing deck to watch Timbers games...the list goes on and on. They provide countless non-workout classes for all ages and have great camps for kids. And Family Friday is a must if you're a young family! The MAC is fantastic. It is old but never outdated. They work to ensure the athletic area and formal areas are held to high standards, and even though people get angry about dress codes, it keeps everyone looking nice. The MAC is the nicest club in Portland for a reason. There's many reciprocal clubs across the US that you can use as well if you're a MAC member. read more

I have been a member at the M.A.C. club for about 42 years and I'd like to say it's an excellent place to stay fit.I usually go down there 3 or 4 times a week and workout in the gym.One of my favorite people (God rest his soul was Joe Loprinzi)Who I see a picture of,every time I workout there.It is also a great place to play tennis,swim,anything athletic,I mean anything,if it's athletic,it is down at the M.A.C.I was in a motorcycle accident 24 yr's ago ,which left me partially paralyzed.I started to go down to the M.A.C. club a year later,to gain some of my phisque back and by golly it's been a godsend of a place to also just go down and blow off some steam ,in those moments of uncertainty.Thank you to all of the staff and those who work down there.
