Well, I hope you like butter and cream. Because that might be all you taste. First time trying this place, and I'm struggling between giving a 2 and a 3. The food was a 3. They messed up the order slightly, so a point off (especially since they called me back; read on): Order pickup/accuracy: seemed good at first. Food was ready when I got there, or so I thought. I got out to the car though and they called me and said there was an error. So I went back in, and they did something, and gave it back. So, you would think that after that everything would be right, no? You would think... But having ordered 2 veg combos, I should have gotten two appetizers. I ordered one veg samosas, and one veg pakoras. I got only one, and it wasn't what I was expecting---it resembled thick potato chips. It certainly wasn't samosas. Maybe it was pakoras but it wasn't like any pakoras I've ever had---no hint of the cauliflower they say is part of the pakoras. Anyway. On the appetizers, they were one for two, at best. Food quality: There were 4 of us eating, and three of us gave it a "meh". The other one liked it quite a bit. Here's our order for the entrees, and my take: Baigan Bhartha: hardly any eggplant flavor. Tasted mostly of butter and cream. Saag Paneer: This also tasted mostly of butter and cream. Not like other saag paneers I've had, where the spices come through. This was more like German creamed spinach, but with paneer. Chana Masala: This one was pretty good. Tadka Dal: All of us agreed, this was under-salted. Even to me, who seldom puts salt on my food. Bhindi Masala: This was pretty good. Nicely cooked okra, with good flavor. Malai Kofta: These are dumplings in sauce. The dumplings themselves had a nice flavor, if you were able to isolate it. But mostly the flavor literally got lost in the sauce. And the sauce tasted, again, mostly like cream---hardly anything of the aromatic spices came through. It also had the consistency of Cheez Wiz. Desserts: Pista and Mango Kulfi. Pretty good. Wish I could have given a better review. Next time I'll go to the other South Asian place in Downtown Evanston, which has a better track record for me. read more

Mumbai Indian Grill Sherman Ave. We've only been here twice in four years but will definitely return more often! Our first time was pre-Covid and the place was a little hole-in-the-wall but the meal was delicious. Then Covid hit and the restaurant operated as solely takeout and delivery and we kind of forgot about it. Fast forward to six months ago, they reopened as a 'dine-in' restaurant, complete with white tablecloths and a refreshed interior. Still a simple and unassuming place, but we decided to try it again tonight and it didn't disappoint! The food is delicious. We started with the samosas, which came filled with flavorful potatoes and vegetables, fried to perfection. We also ordered aloo mutter (peas and potato curry), medium spice, and it was just enough heat to make my nose run. The tandoori chicken came out sizzling hot on the platter and I mean sizzle! It was seasoned and cooked very nicely. Took a couple of minutes for the steam to stop. We ordered a side of naan, which arrived hot and buttery soft, and yet lightly crisp on the bottom. I highly recommend this little spot. It's a BYOB too. Don't get turned off if you're the only people occupying a table (as we were). I swear it felt like they made dinner JUST for US. Absolutely delicious! Ate here for the first time this evening and I am sad I have let so much time go by before giving this place a try. The service was excellent, the gentleman working the front of the restaurant was kind and attentive! While it's an easy to miss restaurant from the outside, the inside itself is bare at best as well. We came for the food though, so as long as it's clean and the food is good, we will be satisfied. It's clean and the food is good! We had the Garlic Naan, Chicken Tikka Masala, and the Lamb Curry. You can specify what spicy level on a scale of 1-5 for all dishes depending on your tolerance level.. definitely try them on the spicer side.. you won't be disappointed. Wow, I have lived in Evanston ....for years and just ate here a month agofor the first time and have already returned. The waiter was attentive asking numerous times if everything was okay, checking on how we felt about the spice levels we had chosen. The food was delicious with balanced flavors and ample servings. The Naan was so tender and tasty. We were told that they had reopened their eat in business in the last year after covid. My wife and I have been looking for a great Indian restaurant that we could enjoy at a reasonable price. Mumbai Indian Grill, recently reopened for dinner, after being take-out only during the period following the pandemic. A grand reopening for lunch has been announced, so watch for the lunch specials. The food was exceptional. You can immediately recognize that the dishes are homemade. We ordered the chicken curry, which was very flavorful, and the vegetable rice biryani, which was more than ample in size and equally flavorful. It's great to eat homemade food in a restaurant again. The overall value of a meal is terrific. We paid $36 which includes tax and tip for our meal, and essentially had an extra meal since the serving sizes are quite large. The service by our waiter Bimal was better than excellent, attentive, and extremely friendly. You can order dishes from mild to spicy using a scale of 1-5. Some dishes come with your choice of naan or rice, while others come only with rice. The restaurant is located in the heart of downtown Evanston, which is convenient with plenty of downtown parking. The restaurant is tastefully decorated in a casual and comfortable ambiance which is appropriate for a relaxed meal with friends or colleagues. We are making  Mumbai Indian a regular go-to restaurant for lunches, dinners, and takeout because of its great tastes, superb value, and event service. Update: On our second visit we began with very generous sized samosas which were delicious. We then had our Saag Paneer and Tandoori Chicken. Both were excellent. The Tandoori was very juicy, made fresh, with great taste. We kept picking at it. The portion was huge. It's all dark meat. I prefer white meat, but really enjoyed it because of the way it is prepared. The spinach with cheese was equally good. We ordered naan with our chicken and rice with the saag paneer, and it worked out great. The naan was very fresh and we loved it. Amazing bang for your buck. I got the samosa chaat (pictured) and vegetable korma. The vegetable korma was rich and creamy with a nice kick (I got medium spicy -- sometimes medium is insanely spicy, but this was very reasonable), and there was also a TON of rice provided. But the samosa chaat is the best samosa chaat I've ever had! The flavors are incredible: spicy, sour/tangy, fresh/sweet... and the texture is amazing too. Every bite has its own unique flavor. Also, it's surprisingly big. I would definitely order this samosa chaat again. It's only $8, but it could be two meals for me... and I would try something else next time instead of vegetable korma, but that's just because I want to try more Indian food! I really wanted to give this place a good review but after my 1st and what will probably be my last experience I'm not sure that I will be returning. Let's start with the ordering experience. When my wife and I arrived, the place was completely empty. There was a man waiting to greet us and he did so with haste. We informed him that we wanted to do take out. He directed us to another man at a counter. As I ordered the food, the man kept motioning his hand as if to say "hurry up." After I finished the order, he printed the receipt and basically threw it at me. I almost cancelled the order. The wait for the food was rather short, about 10 minutes. We ordered the Malai Chicken Masala (mild), lamb sagg (mild) and garlic naan. We were brought our food and we left. The chicken was kind of bland and the lamb was a little tough but we continued to eat. The icing on the whole experience (sarcasm intended) was a nice, long black hair I found in the chicken as I was about to place my fork in it (see attached picture). I called the restaurant to complain and see what could be done. The guy who answered gave the phone to the chef (I do not know why) and then said he would refund the chicken dish. At this point I was done with the whole experience. We ended up throwing the rest of the food away. Sorry Mumbai but we will not be returning. If I had a choice, I could probably eat Indian food 6x a week and it'd be fine. I do like Mumbai Indian Grill. It's pretty decent, especially their $7 or so lunch specials. Their saag paneer tastes almost like American creamed spinach (in looks and in flavor) but I like it. Their paneer cubes aren't as soft though. I've tried their daal (a bit too salty for my liking) and their chana masala was decent. My #1 favorite is the saag paneer and they do a decent job, so I'll leave the review as is. read more

Came here for lunch expecting to order one of the lunch combo, but my friend insisted we order from the regular menu. I'm glad we did. I peaked over at the table near us and noticed the lunch combo portions were tiny. I'm not exactly a person who eats huge portions, but I could tell I would still be hungry. We ended up ordering a side of samosas, chicken masala and a goat dish, which I don't remember what it was called. We also ordered a side of naan as well, which was a good choice. The samosas were my favorite part of the meal. They were fried to perfection and came with two different sauces. The chicken was spicy but really tasty and went well with the rice and naan as well. Hmm not sure why this place has such a low rating. Honestly judging from Yelp, I may not have tried it. Until my Indian friend suggested to have dinner here one snowy night. Ordered the fried vegetarian appetizer, I think that was the worst part of our meal. It came with 2 different sauces, the sauces had more flavor than the samosa tasting appetizers. However, our chicken tandoor came sizzling hot, VERY flavorful. The naans we ordered we also very good, fluffy and warm. Very good service here. They allowed my friend to sit down while she waited for me for a good 20 minute, I was delayed because of snow and driving condition was bad. I've only had it a couple of other times before from other places, so I don't know how it compares, but the sauce was a nice balance of creamy and a bit tangy, and seasoned well. Sucks that it had super dry chicken though. Huge, dry chunks. Had a taste of the shrimp vindaloo, and that is one bold and sour dish. The portions (for take out) are a "small" soup bowl's worth of sauce.protein and rice on the side. I ate about half my sauce with the rice, so, probably not a bad deal depending what you get. I've been here before, and I will be here again. They deliver, and I will order here again. With the original Bombay Kebab now out of business, Mumbai Indian Grill (formerly Bombay) has replaced the gap, both spiritually, flavor wise, and almost name wise. What makes me happy with their food is not only that it's truly pretty spicy (Kali Dal will make you sweat a little), but also that it's a: consistently good, b: vegetarian friendly, and c: a small location. So a sit in is going to be very quick, very personalized. They make a spicy salad with cumin and it is basically delicious, outright. You also get a huge amount of it for the appetizer cost. We make a similar dish at home replacing the lettuce with tomatoes and avocado, and I could eat this every single day. Then we get to the food itself, Kali Dal, Paneers, Sags, all the good stuff - they are well made. I should note the Tandoori vegetables are unique here, and explicitly amazing. I came here with a large group on one of the busiest nights (for some unknown reason) I've seen at a restaurant in Evanston. The ambiance: It's really small. My group was 11 people; there was another table near the window with about 10, and maybe 5 other tables seating 2. If you've seen the interior, you can picture how cramped we were. This definitely isn't something I hold against them; I'm happy they were able to accommodate us. The environment is really lax -- definitely not somewhere I'd go for anything intimate (like, I don't know -- a date?), but it seems perfectly suited for friends to have a talk here. The food: I wasn't really a fan. I ordered the Lamb Madras Curry. It was spicy, which I liked, but it lacked a lot of flavor. It wasn't really savory to my tongue (a few others agreed with me), and the lamb wasn't seasoned thoroughly either. I did have ample rice and na'an to help by using them as vehicles, but I just wasn't having it. At least the $10 price tag isn't too too bad for what I got. The service: I actually gave them 3 (instead of 2) stars because the service here was exceptional given the busy night. My water was always filled. They split checks for us. No. I ordered baigan bharta. .spicy. Its the worst I've have ever eaten. Firstly, it tastes like tomato soup... cooked in sweet chai tea... and nothing in it looks/ tastes fresh. I did see a lot of positive reviews centered around the na'an so im wondering if people who "like indian food" really just like na'an because I'm actually offended. I like this place. They don't have a gigantic meno like many of the Indian restaurants I've been too but they have good specials and they have my go to Indian food dish. I've been here several times and will definitely be coming back again. The only bad thing I have to say is the bathroom is clean but there is a water issue sometimes I'm guessing related to the city sewer line. This place had great food until the management changed!!! The quality of food is shocking!!! We ordered a paratha, which was basically naan bread, it is not an authentic paratha!!! The green chutney that accompanied aloo tikki, was some kind of hulk green, I think it had more food coloring than any real food ingredients. Never in my did I come across. Translucent tamarind chutney!!! The wait staff was nice, ambience is a little cluttered with boxes everywhere. Placed on order via the Yelp app so I'm not 100% sure whose to blame here, but ... Ordered delivery at about 4:15 PM but the food didn't arrive until almost 7:00 PM. Their evening hours are 5:00 PM - 10:00 PM. Original estimated delivery time (according to the app) was 45-50 minutes. Had to call the delivery.com customer service people twice. Once at 5:20, which resulted in me being told that the food would be another 45 minutes. Another time at 6:20, which resulted me being told that the food would be another 5 minutes. In both call instances, the device person on the other end put me on hold and said that they called the restaurant to seek status. Presuming that this is actually what did happen, no matter. And no credit or discount or even an offer for anything to accommodate the unreasonably long wait. Will not be ordering through the app again and will not be ordering from this restaurant again neither. The food was actually decent when it arrived. But 3.5 hours from order to delivery? Note: the star rating is solely based on the food. The food here always tastes great. Tender and flavorful chicken tandoori. Curries I've tried are the chicken vindaloo and chicken tikka masala. Again, the dishes always are packed with flavor plus they give you a lot of meat. The biryani is good, but my personal opinion is that the curries are more memorable. And the naan? Always soft and chewy. This is definitely my favorite place in the area because the food is consistently great. To address the actual location. I am a huge fan of this place! Great food and quality right in the center of Evanston! You can also get unlimited refills during this special!!! They also have specific curries available for just under 8 dollars for lunch that include a curry and naan or rice!! The first thing that about me was suggesting an appetizer that was bigger and twice the price of the one I got but not letting me know. That's probably partially my fault. I gave up trying to correct that mistake. Secondly 15 minutes turned into 40 minutes. More than double. Not sure what sort of service cos the server didn't say anything until 30 minutes have passed. Lastly I'm missing my naan. Also this place gets really hot and stuffy when it's warm outside so I'm not sure if you really want to sit there.
