I decided to bring an old business associate who was visiting from Philadelphia for the weekend to Mumbai Spice. His father came with us as well. To start, the associate ordered the Blazing Mumbai Prawns and I got the Tandoori Chicken Tikka. The father ordered the Salt & Pepper Gobi. My appetizer was absolutely divine and the others seemed to enjoy theirs as well. I am told that the prawns were extremely tender and flavorful. For our entrees, I ordered the Dum Rogan Josh, my friend had the Ginger and Garlic Lobster, and his father had the Chicken Achaari. The Indian/Chinese restaurant Mumbai Spice on Mass Ave in Boston was a huge disappointment when my husband and I went there at 6pm on a Friday. Dreadful, dull, cafeteria-grade food. Too bad, I'd wanted to find out what Hakka Chinese food was like. After going, to Mumbai Spice, I think I still don't know what the Indian take on Chinese cuisine is like. Lansing's hot & sour soup wasn't spicy, hot or sour, and was actually lukewarm in temperature to boot. Oddly it had uncooked cabbage and carrot in its viscous broth. Definitely too much cornstarch was used to thicken the soup. My dumpling soup seemed slightly better, but nothing special. I could have made the same thing at home in no time at all with bouillon and grocery store frozen gyoza dumplings. Worst were the entrees. Lansing ordered Kung Pao Chicken, that was also dull, not spicy and too viscous. This was weird because the waiter warned it would be very spicy hot, and Lansing said that was fine.My Singapore Noodles were ordered with chicken, but came with not one morsel of meat. The noodles were also incredibly bland. Worst meal we've had in years. We actually wondered if we were getting warmed over food that had been cooked earlier in the day, and toned down in seasoning for the American palette. Some restaurants only have a chef working during the day, and only serve warmed over food at night. That could have explained the poor food we were served, but at the prices Mumbai Spice charges, everything should be freshly cooked to order. We will never go there again. I would not be surprised if ,like the Chinese Mirch Hakka restaurant that was previously at this location, Mumbai Spice goes out of business after a year. The rice was very plain, not cooked with spices as I am accustomed to and required sauces from the entrées. Staff was friendly and quite eager, so that was a plus. Have been here twice now. The first time I went, it was my first Indian food experience in the States and I had high expectations like the naive child I was. Ordered Hot & Sour soup, Chicken Chilly and Veg Fried Rice. Soup was okay, too sour for my taste. Chicken Chilly and fried rice were fine as well. Nothing extraordinary but it all still tasted good. When we got our check we saw trust there was added gratuity of 15% for a party of 2 which isn't very common unless it's a big party. We spoke to the staff and they said it's 10% and no matter what we said, they continued to repeat that they've worked really hard and that they are sure it's 10% and didn't let us show them the manual calculations either. We were planning on giving gravity anyways, but our questions and thoughts led to lies on their side and a bad overall customer experience. Waste of time and money. I don't recommend. I ordered this for dinner tonight. Tried calling several times and never got an answer so I decided to order online. I ordered saag paneer and baignan barta at 7:50pm. I was told it would be ready by 8:20. After arriving at the restaurant and waiting for 10 minutes, I was told they were out of stock of saag paneer and was asked to order something else. Not sure how it took them 40 minutes to realize they were out of stock. Ridiculous. I ended up replacing it with paneer makhani. Waited another 20 minutes and finally got my food after an hour. On top of all this, the food wasn't good at all. The paneer tasted like soggy tofu and the makhani sauce was no better than store bought sauce. Baignan barta was fine, not great. The food is very authentic. They have some classic street foods you don't find at other places in the city. Ambience is superb too, very cool Bollywood songs. But the day I visited, my server was a bit passive aggressive, that was my first time actually visiting the place itself, maybe she was just having a bad day, I'll give her the benefit of doubt but I did not like it because I was with a special person. I was extremely surprised by my bland meal. I ordered tarka dal and was so looking forward to it but sadly what I got from this restaurant wasn't very flavorful or spicy. I asked for a medium to spicy level of spicy and I clearly got none at all. Also, this order had been made as a take out order but since I had more time than I thought, I sat at the bar to eat it. My dish was made super liquidy, which I was a bit surprised by, but most annoyed by its deliverance. They gave me the dish in one of those flat black plastic containers, rather than a cylindrical one more suited for soup/liquidy items, so it got messy real quick. I also got the smallest box of takeout rice ever. So with this I'm wavering between a 2 to 3 star review, probably two based just off this dish alone. They don't have a lunch buffet which would have given me a better overall impression of their dishes, but instead they have lunch specials. PROS: the staff was very very friendly. I started with Salted Lassi which turned out to be 60% froth, little lassi. Then i got Pau bhaji.. bhaji was bland and pau were did not even buttered. For main course, I ordered Veg Manchurian which was too much watery and no taste. It came with white rice and rice were dried like they were cooked one week before. Best part of the meal was water. I ate minimal food, paid my bill and got out. When i was walking back to my hotel, I started having stomach pain. Overall, very bad experience. This place should not exists. I came here with three friends last night. There were three other parties in the entire restaurant. We were seated quickly and the waitress gave us water in Mason jars that was lukewarm. Took our order pretty quickly, but we didn't get food till 1 hour later. And when the food did arrive,there were not proper utensils. Got there around 8:40pm and after waiting for a while at 9 pm they tell me that they are just putting my order through and it should be ready in 15-20 minutes. The food was solid, BUT not worth the price at all. Ordered the Karahi Achari Gosht and which was $23 with tip. The flavor was good, but the portion size was ridiculously small. I spent most of my time at the restaurant SEARCHING for the actual meat within the sauce because there were so few pieces in the already small bowl that was given to me. The service was good for the most part from two employees, except for one lady who gave me an attitude for asking for a to-go box. Would give 2.5 stars but due to not having that option I leaned toward 2 stars rather than 3 because of how upset I was with the very small serving sizes that were NOT worth the price. read more

While searching up Indian restaurants in Boston we found this really nice restaurant. Mumbai Spice had good service, great ambiance with optional outdoor seating and delicious food. We ordered Saag Paneer, Kalmi Kababs, Chicken Biryani and Chilli Paneer. The saag and biryani were really tasty and the naan and rotis were soft not leathery. The food was not overly spicy and most importantly food was not oily, which was a huge in our books. In all, Mumbai Spice is definitely worth a visit if you are in the Boston area and in mood for some yummy Indian food. read more
