My lobster was absolutely delicious. However, I was so upset that I had to ask for underneath my table to be cleaned before we sat. I was a little bit embarrassed because we took friends there for dinner. The server came with his bare hands, just cleaned the floor. Picked up the butter that was on the floor the napkin the crumbs it was actually kind of gross ..no broom or anything. Mind you the woman who sad us sat at her desk. Watched us sit on top of each other while we waited for the floor beneath us to be cleaned. We waited a while to be served. Once our server did come, she was very nice. Explain the man well and like I said my lobster was really yummy but I don't know if I'm going back. This is my third or fourth time there are my complaints are always the same I keep returning for the yummy lobster, but can't do it again. Mind you across the bridge to go to this place. This was my second visit to the Barge for a Saturday lunch. The restaurant has been around since the 1920s and has a nice location near the Perth Amboy waterfront. It's not on the water, but you have water views if you ask for a window table. There is also an outdoor patio for the warmer months. The lunch menu has a nice selection with reasonable prices. The meal came with bread and salad and your choice of French fries or potato. I, once again, ordered the Grecian stuffed filet of flounder and thought it was delicious. The rest of the table ordered a variety of items including turkey club, shrimp scampi, and the flounder. Overall, a nice place for lunch. The service is efficient and friendly. Very friendly staff. Outside seating if that's what you like. Reasonably priced seafood right near the water. Clams oreganata was delish. Zuppa de clams appetizer was enough for my entree. Although food is adequate say around B+ the cooks appearance is less than adequate. Dressed as if he's going to play in a softball game the look is definitely a major turn off. Dining area is small tight and a bit cluttered looking. There's no ambience just basically set to make profits at the expense of adequate styling, a bit run down look. Not worth spending good money on this place the experience was one which left me with the feeling of never returning. Used to come here as a boy and I was happy to see that this restaurant is still thriving. It's a decently sized restaurant located in the water. The staff was super friendly and attentive. We were seated immediately and hot bread and butter was down on the table as we sat. The prices are very reasonable and the portions are quite large. I truly enjoyed everything I ate that night. The lobster combo was huge, buttery and soooo very tasty. The clams ala diablo were plentiful and with just the right amount of heat. I'm so glad I decided to take a ride and try The Barge Restaurant and Cocktail also know as The Barge Restaurant and Banquet Facility. It's located across from the Arthur Kill Waterways in Perth Amboy. There is a patio and indoor seating. I chose indoor seating because there were construction crews working outside at the time of my visit. The Barge Restaurant has been around since 1925. It's mostly seafood, but they do have a nice selection of soups, salads, burgers,wraps, steaks, pasta, and chicken. I came here for lunch with a friend. The lunch menu has a good amount of selections to choose from with reasonable prices. I chose for my entree the Broiled Scallops. I was surprised I received 12 scallops for a lunch entree. It came with a house salad, and a choice of a side. I chose a baked potato. My scallops were delicious, and perfectly cooked. My salad was crisp and a nice size. My friend ordered their Lobster Salad Wrap. She had a choice of sides and chose their potato salad. She throughly enjoyed her meal. The Barge offers an extensive list of desserts, so many that they couldn't list all of them on their menu. I had to go onto my iPhone and download the rest. For dessert I chose their Chambord Parfait with Vanilla Ice Cream and fresh Whipped Cream. It was so good! This is where will power comes in. I had a couple of spoonfuls, but I could've eaten the whole dessert. The second dessert I shared was crème brûlée. It too was very good with a very creamy custard interior and a hard shell on the exterior just waiting to be cracked with my spoon.Whipped Cream was piped on the side of the dessert. The interior of the Barge is your typical nautical theme with blue walls, and Nautical wallpaper as you walk in. They have white linens on all the tables, and the tables are distanced apart. The staff was very nice, and friendly. They did their best to accommodate us. The service was a bit slow, so I'm giving them 4 stars. I think they needed more waiters. This restaurant has two dining rooms which are spread out. The Barge Restaurant is open for lunch and dinner. Next time I come I'd like to sit outside and take in the views of the waterway. Been going here since I was in single digits ages. My family would always go here for birthdays and such and we ended up getting into seafood at a young age with the help of going to the barge ! I am now 32 and we go with my family at least 3 times a year. We always have such great memories. The host Mary watching us grow up and now my own son giving her a hug everytime. The wonderful Linda the best waitress ever. I changed it up this time and ordered the Grecian stuffed flounder which was very delicious ! Also recommend the fried scallops! i hate giving bad reviews but we just walked in trying to get a table. We open the door and a worker standing on the stairs, asks what we want, we ask for a table. He looked us up and down (we had just come from a walk) and said "what". We asked for a table again and he just stared at us. I asked if we were able to sit for a drink and appetizers. We had a gift certificate for here. First impression was place was nice but then boyfriend had a dirty water glass and we had a bug in the sangria. Waitress apologized and brought a new glass and new sangria. No compensation, but ok. We shared the shrimp and crab cocktails, shrimp were huge and crab were decent size chunks. I had the flounder stuffed with crab, rice and veggies. Flounder was terribly bland as was rice. I had to ask for butter for the flounder for flavor. The staff were friendly, and maybe it was an off day but the food was also having an off day. My sister's sea scallops were bay scallops and bland. The fries were decent. My mother and I had blue point oysters which were still attached in part to their shells and some had partially submerged below the water which has melted from the bed of ice they were on. I've never been served oysters which were on half ice and half water; they had obviously been out waiting to be delivered to our table for long enough for some of the ice to melt. I tried two but was afraid of getting sick and told the staff about the melted ice. The cost was taken off our check. My lentil soup was also bland. Went for a Saturday dinner for a party of 3. We were greeted with smiles and there was no wait. I didn't see the bar area and was seated towards the water. This dinning area had no decoration, white table cloth, family setting and low music. It is across from the trees from the water and has big windows, gives a beautiful serene view. Thus far the juiciest oysters I have eaten, we didn't care for the shrimp cocktail, and the raw clams were good. Main course were all delicious. We had fry platter (flounder, shrimp, scallops), grilled salmon, stuffed lobster, and broiled dish (half lobster, scallops, shrimp and stuffed clam). All dishes come with a salad and a side (veggies, rice, French fries or bake potato). They should add mash potatoes to their menu, clam strips, and some wild caught fish. Came here for dinner on a Saturday evening I hadn't been here in about 10 years but everything was just as I remembered it. We asked for a table out on the patio since it was a nice evening and were promptly seated. They have a nice small patio and they also had some entertainment a gentleman was singing songs and playing a keyboard. He was taking requests and dedicating songs. They were also getting ready to start playing a trivia game when we were leaving. We were given our menus along with a basket of bread and crackers and breadsticks with some butter. We each had a small green salad with some balsamic vinaigrette to start. For my entree I decided on the stuffed baked main lobster with a baked potato. It was pretty good it could have just used a little more seasoning in the stuffing. It did take quite a while to get the check and pay the bill but I guess the server was just busy. I'm not sure if they cover the tables inside as well because I really didn't see him that often. Either way he was very friendly and we enjoyed our dinner. Eh. My friend had her birthday dinner at the Barge. The first thing we asked sitting down was if we could have separate checks, and the waitress told us that it was clearly stated that they do not do separate checks. They did not tell my friend this when she made her reservation several weeks ago, nor was it on the menu or the website. Anyway, our waitress said that we could pay by amount at the end, so we ended up doing that since we were already there. When it came to the food, it was OK. I got the chicken parm with linguine which was pretty good, but it was not worth $17. Many of my friends ordered seafood and were very unhappy. The mussels were not cleaned well and two of my friends said they tasted gritty. My other friend had the salmon and said it was greasy. When it came down to the check, it took my former server friend 15 minutes to figure out how much everyone owed, which would have been so much easier if their system was updated, or if servers write out separate orders. This would take longer but it would be so much easier on both ends. Our waitress was nice and attentive the whole time, but we could tell she was getting noticeably impatient, even though it was something that could be resolved if they did separate checks in the first place. I felt bad for my friend who deserved so much more. There are so many other places you could go for a group occasion. While the Barge has its positives - the location (which is pretty touristy) and some of the food, the system is just updated and communication is not the best. We're in town for a month and this is close by. We've been leery of eating out during Corona but decided to venture out. We were seated outside. All the staff were wearing masks and they had sanitizer you could use on your way in/out. They gave us (nice) paper menus & place looked clean. Felt reassuring during these times. We had steamers, fried calamari & steak. Steamers were great. Well cleaned with tasty broth (just a tad too salty) + butter on side. Calamari was perfectly cooked, very large portion (I'd be happy with half as much) with marinara that tasted homemade. Bf's steak was cooked just right, which was also large portion and steak fries were great. Wine was modestly priced ($6) and enjoyable. Our server Solomon was excellent & friendly even though we were needy customers who asked for lots of things (he even put our leftovers in the fridge while we took a walk). Covid restrictions are lifting and mask wearing is now optional, but the staff wears masks and sanitizer is available. Our party of four ordered jumbo shrimp cocktail and bacon wrapped scallops. The shrimp were fresh and succulent. The bacon was crisp and the scallops tender. They were a good start. We noticed that only one style of clam chowder was offered and that was Manhattan, which disappointed us who prefer New England and there wasn't a bisque on the menu either. For main courses, we ordered flounder stuffed with spinach and feta, a stuffed lobster and Chioppino, a dish with clams, mussels, lobster and scallops over linguini with marinara. We all enjoyed our meals, but needed to ask for a cracker to get to the lobster claws rather than have it delivered with the dish. Then the First Lady came back and said there was room. We decided to leave since we were clearly not welcomed. You lost a customer and I will make sure to tell anyone else of the poor service. The history of The Barge is enough reason alone to give it five stars. My grandparents and parents were born and raised in Perth Amboy, my grandparents owned a home on Water Street #214 just around the corner from The Barge. We went to The Barge many times while my grandparents were still alive. My grandfather, John Swallick, was the Chief of Police in Perth Amboy from 1954 until his death in 1963. I took my wife to The Barge on many occasions while visiting my grandmother at her home on Water Street until her death in 1995. The Barge always delivered good food and a great time. I'm looking forward to my next visit soon. I know a lot of businesses suffered during the pandemic. It's nice to see that The Barge remains a mainstay in the Perth Amboy area. Reminded him about bread basket. Still waiting. Reminded again. Asked him to make sure potato skins weren't on bill since we never got them. Didn't apologize Never did a "is everything okay" check. We had empty glasses and had to ask for refills. Got our drinks. He had a very unhappy look on his face. He finally asked if everything was ok but he was a couple feet away from us, like one "foot out the door". Gave him our dessert order. He didn't ask. Waited too long for bill. First time trying out this restaurant. I notice the decor. Love the mural on the wall as you entered the restaurant. I came here because my friend suggested this place. So glad we came! My friend and I were the first customers to arrive that day. There was construction outside due to a sink hole outside but once you walked inside, it was nice and peaceful. My waitress was pleasant and had helpful suggestions. I brought my 3 month old baby in and they were just so accommodating. I wish I knew my waitress' name because she was excellent. She mentioned she has been working there for 10 yrs. Our waitress took our orders right away and got us a bread basket. The drinks came out so quickly. My friend ordered a cappuccino served with rock candy as the stirrer.. thought that was a nice elegant touch and clever. i ordered the grilled salmon with home fries and cole slaw. The salmon comes sizzling hot on a hot plate but the waitress put my salmon on a regular place because she didn't want any of the salmon oil to splatter on my baby which she was on point and so considerate. She apologized for it not being on the hot plate but I was impressed that she was thinking of my baby's well being. My friend got the same dish as me plus lobster tail. My salmon was cooked perfectly. it was moist with mild flavor but thats how i like my salmon. The home fries were charred and flavorful. Best home fries ever. Cole slaw was as expected- delicious. My friend was satisfied with her meal as well. Then came rice pudding. All the dishes that came out had a nice presentation and this rice pudding had whipped cream on top. The Barge is our go to place for all our family celebrations and whenever we have company staying over! We have brought family and friends visiting from India and Europe and they have loved the food, the ambience and the view of the marina from the windows. Husband only ever orders the broiled salmon while the kids are partial to the lobster menu and the crab legs and since I might be the only vegetarian ever going to The Barge always order the Greek salad and it's always great.
