Unfortunately, this cemetery is surrounded on three sides by busy traffic, retail outlets, and a few residential homes nearby. The cemetery as a whole is very orderly, neatly arranged, and well manicured. This is still a very much active and ongoing cemetery with additional space for those who want to make this their forever home. You can choose burial or above ground mausoleum space. This place is very well attended by those who are still with us due to many graves and mausoleum spaces being covered in flowers and trinkets. There is an on-site enclosed chapel for services honoring the dearly departed. Closer to 61st St. you'll find some of the older headstones and family vaults. The only drawback of the cemetery is the fact that it gets easily flooded in a heavy rain, or especially in a hurricane, causing some of the stones to fall over.

The one thing you notice right away is how well organized and how magnificent many of the cemetery markers are. There are also quite a number of mausoleums to be found on the property. There are countless headstones dating from the latter part of the 1800s but most are from the 20th century. This cemetery is filled with the who's who of Galveston. This singular review does not even begin to explain the scale and scope of this historical cemetery. They did my mother's funeral in 1983 and they were awesome then too, very caring and accommodating. I am sorry if anyone has had a bad experience but ours was amazing! They also performed a funeral for a friend who was killed in 2011 and it was one of the largest funerals and visitations I have ever been to. I believe the guest book was over 900 for visitation. They did an excellent job coordinating the fireman and getting him buried in a different county.
