We visited Murdochs on the evening Saturday August 3rd to buy t-shirts and souvenirs during our visit to Galveston. While we were there, my 11 yr. old son attempted to use the penny press to make a souvenir. He makes these everywhere we visit and his collection is at almost 100 pressed pennies, so he is a pro at correctly choosing his design, entering the money, and turning the handle to press his penny. The penny he pressed was defective and no image was clearly visible when it came out of the machine. In all times he's made pressed pennies at other souvenir shops around the country, this has only happened a handful of times. Other stores quickly apologize and give him a refund to try again or if they are concerned that the machine is defective, will give him a refund and then take the machine out of service by putting an "out of order" sign on it. Based on our previous experiences, we told a sales associate what happened and showed her the defective pressed penny. She offered to get the manager to help us. When the manager arrived, my 11 yr. old proceeded to tell her what had happened. To say that she was rude and cruel to a child is an understatement! She proceeded to tell him with a look of disgust on her face that it was "your fault because you didn't know how use the machine!" When I assured her that I supervised him and was 100% sure he used it correctly and has used a penny press almost 100 times, she then told him in a very cruel and mean voice that "it's a gamble when you play that game so I am not giving you your money back!" I told her that a penny press machine is not a game, you put your money in and get a pressed penny. I told her that it is not like a claw game where you put your money in and may or may not successfully use the claws to get a prize. At this point, I looked over at my son who eyes had started welling up, not because he lost his money but because of the ugly way she was talking to him and blaming him (he later told me). Upon also seeing this, instead of offering an ounce of decency and kindness to a child, she stormed off and just left us standing there - no help, no apology for the defective machine, no refund, no nothing. At this point, I looked around for my husband who was carrying all the things we were going to purchase and instead saw a several shoppers with looks of shock and sadness for my son after having witnessed the way she had treated him. Understandably once we found my husband, we left everything we had chosen to purchase on the counter, walked out and up the street a couple of blocks, and spent our money at another souvenir shop. I'm sure the owners of Murdochs aren't missing our $100, but it makes me wonder how many other customers have been treated like this by this manager. It also makes me wonder, if she treats an 11 yr. old child who respectfully asked for help like this in public and shames him in front of other shoppers, how on Earth she may treat the staff that work under her when no one is around. It goes without saying that we will never go back to Murdochs in Galveston. read more
