We enjoyed our stay at Murray. Would recommend it. But like everything many options on the island to consider. For our first time staying we were happy we choose this place. But as we walked around there were others that appealled to us. The precheck went well. They would call when ready. We left luggage in luggage hold room. Did some walking. We're called and flawless. The Amiga restaurant is ok. We had one breakfast but not eat there again. Having the complimentary coffee station and doughnuts from 8:30 to 10:30 was great. The front porch has three rocking chairs which we used a number of time. I would recommend adding a fourth. I know that during the day they have a free sample fudge table and trying to get people in for Amiga bfast and lunch. But at least when the Amiga closes at 4:30 put the fourth chair out. The lobby area seating close to the elevator. Secluded. Nice chairs if you want to listen to a podcast or read a book. The pool deck area and small 3 foot pool/hot tub was nice. Queit and calming place. Rooms are small. Queen bed and ours was comfortable. AC unit did ok. Though at times it felt damp. Sink is in enclave I. The room. Shower and toilet in its own room. Shower is small. One dresser and TV. small bed side table. All in all it works. But not a place to hang out in. I did like that Murray is right across from Arnolds and near some decent restaurants plus the grocery store. The staff were helpful and friendly. No comment on room pricing as there is limited room inventory on the island. When you go expect inflationary pricing. read more

Our visit started with meeting Brandon & Michael at the front desk. Brandon actually remembered my phone call asking for extra towels. Amazing! He also stopped at the room to let me know I'd left the key in the door of the room. The hotel is a quaint, old structure - well maintained and accessible. The room was well appointed with a view overlooking the street and the Pink Pony. I was a bit concerned that it might be noisy after hours, but it wasn't. Check out was equally smooth. I've stayed at many places on Mackinaw Island over the years. This is a lovely hotel on the main strip of Mackinaw Island. It is easy walking distance from everything downtown. They have a pool as well as fudge and a Mexican restaurant inside. There is one elevator on site that wasn't working have the time we were there. This was an issue because we had a baby and where hauling a stroller up and down the stairs. When we booked this hotel, it also said we would be able to get a baby bassinet, they did not have this. We also booked a room with two twin beds, but really they were full size. When we asked the front desk about this, they said the beds were "their version of queen size". There is free coffee and tea bar down stairs which was nice. Overall though, there are better places to stay on Mackinaw for the money. read more

If only I could leave a negative star. Absolutely awful. Room is 9x10. Queen bed actually lifts off the floor if I sit on the side. Mattress is definitely from the 50's. Closet is a rod stuck in the corner of the room. Bathroom is so small you can't turn around so they stuck the sink on the wall in the room. And they think it's appropriate to charge Hilton Grand rates! Go ANY place else on the island! read more

So we are told that the original big draw was the Mackinac Island fudge, so we knew we had to try some while here. There were at least two fudge shops on every corner and more than one "original." Some were interesting due to large windows to view the fudge being processed on marble slabs. Some had special deals, some had attractive packaging to take home. All vying for your attention. What sold us on trying the fudge at Murray Hotel was (1) samples by the door and (2) nice cool tables (in their Mexican Cafe) to sit and enjoy the fudge and a respite from the traffic (bicycles & horses) and heat. Fudge was thick and gooey and delicious and a delight. The choices were great also, making it hard to choose. We decided on the Turtle fudge. One of the best I have tasted. One thing I just didn't like is the constant strong smell of Mexican food from the first floor where they serve it. Good creamy fudge with a fabulous assortment of flavors and colors. The hotel was clean. The beds were comfortable. But then the tub drained backed up during my shower The three staff members that we needed to interact with were a disaster. Upon checkin, the first staff member was a bit snotty. Maybe I wouldn't have noticed that if we hadn't just been treated so wonderfully from everyone on the Shepler's Ferry. When we tried to buy fudge, the other two women couldn't interrupt their gossip session to get our order so we left. And yes, my husband spoke up to say 'could we get some of this fudge, please'. The one woman seemed to hear him as she moved her body slightly towards us... but her coworker didn't pause her story and I guess it was pretty good cuz the other one just couldn't seem to pull herself away from her coworker. There was a long pause of disbelief feom us before we walked away as the two women continued. read more

The hotel located right across street from the star line ferry. So very convenient! And normal check in hour are 4pm, and they allow us to check in around 12 noon which is nice. The lobby is cozy and busy, has small restaurant area, fudge area and reception area. The decorations brings you back to the old days, though it's nice. We stayed here for 2 nights. The only thing is the sheets is so thin. Next time, I'm going to bring my own bed sheet! read more

We have stayed at the Murray previously and it was a great deal. I booked through Agoda this time (third party). I broke my foot one month prior to the trip and attempted to reschedule (didn't ask for refund). They said they would contact the Murray and then relayed that the answer was no. I called the Murray directly and they also said no even with medical documentation that I cannot travel that weekend. Their published policy is that they do allow cancellations less a $25 fee. I understand that I booked third party and will not do that again. My issue is that the Murray didn't attempt to help me or brainstorm a solution at all. The woman on the phone was curt and matter of fact. The Murray will still make the same profit on my room whether I go or not. If I cancel they will make third party profit AND they will fill that room. They could brainstorm a courtesy credit or something. Nope. End of the conversation. I'm not canceling. The room can remain vacant and they can get paid a portion from the third party and I will never return there and will share my story with others. Their other option would've been to get paid by the third party for my room and then turn around and sell those rooms and make more profit. They could then extend a discount for our rescheduled trip. They would then make money on those rooms twice and whatever money I spend while I'm there. Instead they're getting the money from the third party and thats it. AND I can assure you that we won't be back and neither will our friends or family. read more

This review is two fold. First the restaurant. Then the hotel. Breakfast = 0. I should have stuck to the protein bars I know my husband keeps in his briefcase. Or the slightly brown banana that my 4 yr old put in my handbag on top of some high heels I took off and stashed. It was the worst breakfast I think I've ever eaten. Even worse than some of the breakfasts in bed that my kids have made me over the years. I don't have to eat fussily. --I like simple foods. There's a place for snobby eating, but there's also a place for a taco truck in my life. Keep that in mind, as you read this review... If you like overcooked scrambled eggs the size of peas and chalked full of dried parsley (but missing salt) or a glass of orange juice the size of a salt shaker, by all means, order up, big boy. The potatoes were frozen. Cooked, mind you, but previously frozen. Again, no salt. I don't own a salt shaker. I'm not someone who adds extra salt to foods. But nothing I ate tasted as if it had any salt added at all. They put the B in BLAND here. Buffets often have yogurt. Oh, they have it here too. --in a big community bowl everyone can scoop out of. Haha!! I just about choked when my son said he wanted soft serve ice cream at 9 a.m. A wee bit early if you ask me. I'd already paid his $10 flat fee so I relented. It was "soft serve" alright. So soft in fact, it was a puddle in his bowl. If after all of that, you still want eat this, you and I can never be friends. Sooo...yeah, no stars. Hotel = 3. Maybe a 3.5. It's old and pretty steeped with "granniness" but this is Mackinac. I actually like it. It has charm. Old wallpaper, hard beds, pillows that could have come from my great-aunt's estate sale.. I feel like I'm sleeping in my grandma's attic bedroom. I love it though. Just as I love leaving my pillow top and big feather pillows to go stay at my grandma's. It's vintage just like my grandma is. You can't come to this island and get upset about cost. It's expensive. I'm paying as much for this room (deluxe) as I would for a room at the Chicago Ritz. As much as I love the Ritz and my great city of Chicago, you have to appreciate waking up to the sound of horses clip-clopping along instead of fire trucks and ambulances. But the food.... If my kids want to eat at the pizza buffet they hold here in the afternoons, I'm going to take my chances on the sure-to-be brown banana that's been sitting on top of those non-sensible shoes. read more

Pros: cute and quaint place to stay right in the middle of downtown. Had food options as well as fudge right in the hotel. Hot tub available off the second floor. VERY CLEAN! Polite staff. Cons: breakfast buffet was awful. Poor quality food. Worse than a free continental breakfast, but this we had to pay $10.99 each for! Plus $2 extra if we wanted juice (which was clearly mixed half with water). Hot tub was a nice amenity, but with a hotel that has as many rooms as it does, the hot tub had a sign posted it only had vacancy for 15 (!) so every time we went to go enjoy it, it was packed full. Overall; I would consider staying here again, but wouldn't waste the $ on their breakfast. read more

So I am not a huge fudge fan and often won't pay for overpriced food. But holy cow this was place good and worth it! A lot of money for non-existing managers - Unfortunately, if you need assistance from a manager you may have to wait a long time. Stayed at this hotel for a weekend and needed to discuss my reservation with a manager. There was a family emergency where I had to check in a day later. I was shocked when the front desk workers repeatedly informed me throughout the weekend the manager was "off the premises" I must have went down to check if the manager was in 4-5 times throughout the weekend. Only until the end of my stay as I was walking out of the hotel to leave was a manager magically available. It wasn't the right manager, however, as I needed to wait to speak with a different manager who was in charge of reservations. The entire process was draining to say the least. The correct manager was found and gave me a call the next day. He was demeaning and talked over me - blamed me for how I booked the reservation and said I needed to give them a 2 week notice in the future. I will not be staying at this hotel in the future - I advise other families to book elsewhere as well. read more

To me, this is just the type of old hotel that you want to stay in while on Mackinac Island! A nice old hotel with the feel of the early 1900's. Creaky old halls, small lobby, tiny elevator, big staircase, old-time wall paper, and lots of fascinating old photos in the walls. In short - just what I was hoping for. They don't have a pool; but they to have a very nice Jacuzzi with a waterfall on the second floor roof. Don't get me wrong, this is not a full-service hotel on the scale of the Grand Hotel, but It is also a quarter the cost. Friendly service and small comfortable rooms. When we got off the ferry we were greeted by a friendly young college student from Poland who strapped our baggage on his bike and schlepped it over to the hotel. After a short walk to the hotel we checked-in and he took our bags up to the room for us. As I mentioned, since this is an old hotel, the rooms are small but comfortably appointed and clean. It seems like most of the staff are college kids from around the world that come here to work the summer. We ran into kids from Macedonia, the Philippines, Malaysia, Mexico and Poland working at the hotel. The Murray also has its own fudge store with very creamy fudge that we liked; and as a guest we were entitled to a 10% discount. The hotel also has a breakfast buffet and a Pizza buffet for dinner. I would pass on the breakfast buffet if I were you. They also have a small Mexican restaurant but it did not look too impressive. We enjoyed our stay recently at the Murray Hotel and found the staff to be extremely friendly. Check in was super easy, including getting our luggage from the ferry and all the way up to our room with help from the dock porter, who was helpful and nice. The room was definitely historic (dated, some would say) and tiny (there was barely room to walk around the double bed) but we didn't spend much time in the room so the location right downtown near shops, restaurants, the park, and the dock more than made up for the cramped quarters. A highlight of staying at the Murray Hotel was the great hot tub/pool deck area with plenty of chairs and tables -- A great spot to get some outdoor time while being steps from our room. We also had quite a bit of road nose since we were on the front of the hotel, but that was more than made up for by having a view of the marina. We had the buffet breakfast both days and it was fine; Very convenient and nice to be able to fill up before venturing out for the day. Bottom line: Prime location, tiny room, great service, awesome pool deck area. I would recommend this hotel to individuals or couples visiting Mackinac Island. read more

We only visited the fudge shop and did not stay at the hotel. We sampled most of the fudge shops on Mackinac Island and found Murray's to be the best. Plus, they offer many more, innovative flavors than the "traditional" fudge shops. We like it so much that we brought Murray's fudge home as gifts for our friends and family. From 8-10am they take a $3 per pound discount on any order. After that, if you buy 2 pounds, you get a half pound free. read more

Nice hotel, right across from the Arnold dock. The rooms are pretty small which is expected since they want to keep everything historically accurate and it's an old building. It's definitely big enough though. They have good amenities like LCD TV if you must watch TV and wifi. They have a combined pool/spa on the deck which is nice if you want to relax. They sell fudge onsite to care for your immediate fudge needs. They have a breakfast buffet which is decent. They have a porter who can help you get your backs from the harbor to the hotel and also up to your room. They have an elevator which is great if you have any family members who aren't up for walking 3-4 levels of stairs everytime you want to go somewhere. Even though it's an old hotel, it's not creaky and I barely heard other guests even though I'm sure most rooms were sold out since it's in the peak season. The beds were comfortable and I slept well. Everyone working at the hotel were friendly. The wifi wasn't fast but the wifi speeds are generally slow everywhere I went to on the island. read more

The hot tub area is great and a nice place to take a break in the day. Blake, who checked us in, was very friendly and helped get us into a room when we arrived despite us being there before check in time. Nice rooms, friendly staff, great fudge, and a fantastic hot tub. But only stay there, and I say only if the smell of burritos do not bother you. There is a burrito cafe in the lobby that makes the whole hotel smell of burritos! The smell eventually clears the lobby but lingers in the hallways on the upper floors. If you want to take advantage of their free coffee and donuts in the morning take them out to the rocking chairs outside along the front street. I did not try the burritos so I cannot report if they are good or not. Instead of a 4 I wish I could give them a B for you guessed it, Burrito. read more

Luggage was brought right to hotel as we got off boat and was very welcoming. Room was very cute and historical. I rented a bike overnight which I could park about a half a block away behind the hotel. Also the fudge is pretty good. I have been to the Island on numerous occasions stayed at most of hotels from Stone Cliff, Mission Point, Iroquois, Lilac, etc... And the Murray Hotel has proven to be the most cost effective. That said, I have never been more disappointed in service at a hotel on the Island. Why you say, as I am such a positive guy. Come with me to the Island, after racing up from Chicago my close friends were getting married on the Island so I took a week off. Started at Stone Cliff after the race, then to Mission Point where some of the pre-wedding activities were. I decided to move to the Murray because, as the best man, I wanted to be in the centre of it all as guests were scattered all over the Island. My bags were delivered to the Hotel from Mission Point Resort after throwing on my tux for the morning ceremony. Ran back to the hotel after the phenomenal lunch reception on the Grand Hotel porch to check in, the staff offered to bring my bags to the room for me, I accepted, signed my paperwork, and headed out to the post reception shenanigans at the Gate House. Imagine my surprise when I arrived back at the hotel quite late, little buzzed and ready for bed after a crazy day to find that none of my bags had been delivered to my room in the 7 hours I was running around on the Island. Head downstairs and apparently Wake Up the front desk clerk, who seemed rather ticked he was roused from his sleep, and collected my belongings. Far to much for me to get in one trip ask for help, grumble grumble, he agrees picks up some packages shuffles off to the elevator and proceeds to drop a $50.00 bottle of booze on the floor, no apology just an angry look as if somehow it is my fault. Next morning I head to the Front Desk to talk about my experience so far and all I get is some attitude from the front desk staff, allegedly no manager to talk to but a promise that a manager will contact me... Never did. Get home from the Island follow up with them and am told a Manager will call me back, nope. Follow up with reservations and am told that they will certainly make this right and to expect a call from someone, NOPE. Follow up a again and am told that I will receive a call and they do not know why I have not received one yet.... Never called. This is the only low light I have ever experienced in my 10+ trips to the Island when it comes to accommodations. This include staying on a smelly boat, in a room with the girls parents in the next bed, cramming 6 in a room for 2, and plenty of other interesting situations. read more

Stayed at the Murray many times; in fact we've stayed almost everyplace out here. I've got to take issue w the yelper who complained about the yogurt, and explain a bit about Mackinac customs. On the mainland, people are green because they want to be. Out here, residents and businesses HAVE to be green. They pay for all non-compostable trash to be ferried to landfills on the mainland, so little individual yogurt tubs don't cut it. And really, isn't a bowl more elegant? It makes me feel more like an honored guest than a hungry modern American suburbanite. The "soupy" yogurt is delicious, homemade, and presented in an elegant bowl. Didn't your grandma ever decant her ketchup at a fancy lunch? Don't you put the chips in a bowl before company comes over? Same thing. We are not hungry wolves! We have seen yogurt in a cut glass bowl before! And no, we do not need soft serve for breakfast! Because we have been to enough rodeos to know the machine is not ON at breakfast time; soft serve is not on the menu even though you've "paid $10!" It is enough that the room is clean and cozy and the breakfast tides you over till lunch. The Pultes are actual human beings--not a corporation--trying to do something nicer than offer prepackaged tubs of Dannon. Surely we can limit our criticisms to things that might actually be WRONG. read more

Location was great. Now that I've said something positive, we can move on. The Murray Hotel is historic for sure, and I can understand the lack of updates trying to keep the "character" of the building. But the rooms are beyond tiny and have no closets. The bathroom was dark and the walls were paper thin so you could hear your neighbors entire conversation. Thankfully we weren't staying next to any party animals. Every time I showered the smoke alarms went off. Excitement! Our room looked like a cross between someone's grandma's guest room and a scene from a horror movie. The bed wasn't terribly comfortable and it was only a double bed so it was a bit more intimate than the king size we are used to (or at least a queen in a hotel). The photos lining the halls were downright creepy and I swear the weird photos of strange children in our room had eyes that followed you. How relaxing! We didn't eat the in-house fudge or try the restaurants located within the hotel because they didn't look that great. The pool wasn't a pool at all, more like a cross between a jacuzzi and a fountain. It wasn't that warm when we stayed on the island so we didn't use it. There is only one ice machine for the entire hotel, and good luck finding it as all the hallways look the exact same. The hotel staff was nice enough. They left us warm chocolate chip cookies on the nightstand our first night, which helped. I appreciated the convenience of being able to stay on the island and so close to everything. If you are expecting ultra modern, then I believe all of Mackinac Island will disappoint you. Their fudge was the creamiest of the lot. The gals working there were very friendly and encouraged the sampling. I also liked buying by the pound instead of by the slice like most of the other shops. We'd purchased a lot of fudge and the stuff from the Murray Hotel Fudge shop was some of what made it home. Had a recent 3 night stay at the Murray Hotel. The Pro's would have to be the DELICIOUS fudge, donuts, pool area, and food options (Loved the Taco salad at Amigo Burrito, while my girlfriend enjoyed the Pizza & Salad buffet). The only con i had was regarding the housekeeping on staff. We did not get the linen changed on our beds, but i did appreciate us being checked on to see if anything was needed. Overall though, it was a decent experience & we are open to staying at Murray Hotel again for future visits. read more

I'm actually not sure why it's so much cheaper than everything else, I guess it's just that the rooms are small? The location is perfection, the beds are fine, the room was very clean, there's a pool - oh well, don't question a good deal I guess right? Bought my fudge from Murray's Hotel Fudge Co. because of how incredibly friendly the sales ladies there were. They let us tried as much fudges as we wanted, and they were not your traditional fudges, they were creamy and exciting flavors! Prices-wise is the same as Joann's, about $15/lb and buy 2 lbs get 1/2lb free. The best part though was that you could buy however much you want from the blocks. I bought just a little over a pound and 5 different flavors as souvenir, cappuccino, orangesicle, chocolate pecan, heavenly goo, and something delicious with peanut butter. I believe they have an early bird special before 10am, so come earlier if you can. I am glad I went there. read more

Charming hotel and very centrally located, if you aren't claustrophobic, noise doesn't bother you and you want to be right in the center of main street. I have mixed reviews about this Hotel. We stayed in the "Historic Standard View Room with a queen bed". Pros: The location is amazing, right across from the ferry... it doesn't get better than that. Your luggage can be brought over for you, which is super convenient. The staff is friendly and helpful, and you definitely get a "historic" feel as soon as you walk in the door. The outdoor spa area is small, but nice. They have food options available, which we never tried, but it looked great. The room is pretty clean, but the bathroom floors did look pretty dirty. Cons: The room is small, even small is an understatement. Our door was inches away from our bed, and everything in jammed into the tiny room. Our 2 carry on suitcases couldn't be placed anywhere without being in the way. The shower became my worst enemy. There is one small shelf which fit one shampoo bottle, and nothing else. I had to set everything on the floor outside the shower, no big deal. Anything that was set on the shelf somehow slid off when I wasn't looking, and would fall to the floor of the shower. Sleeping in is not a possibility here. We were woken up by walkie-talkies which were carried by the maids, at 8am. Their walkie-talkies were still on full blast when we left our room at 11am. I totally understand wanting to start cleaning, but come on. The walls are thin, and the doors didn't close all the way. You could hear any conversation in the hall or the rooms next door. Overall, I would consider staying there again. The location is great, along with the price, but I would definitely pay more if you were looking for a more relaxing stay. read more
