We really enjoyed Maxwell's at the Merrell. Both dinner and breakfast are very good. The chef is wonderful. This is by far hands-down the best restaurant in Muscatine, Iowa. My travel companion had a cold and we were able to ask for a home remedy. They were gracious enough to give it to us. The home remedy is a teaspoon of cayenne pepper and a shot of milk. I was extremely disappointed with our recent dinner at Maxwell's on the River. The menu was very limited, and I almost walked out after seeing it. However, I had promised my husband a nice steak dinner, so we decided to stay. The steak choices were an 8-ounce filet mignon or a 10-ounce sirloin cap served sliced sushi-style. We ordered the $52 sirloin cap, and it was incredibly chewy. Thankfully, it was already sliced, or we might not have been able to cut through it. I told our waitress how tough it was. She apologized, but did nothing to correct the situation--there was no offer to replace the steak or make things right. I ordered the yellowfin tuna appetizer because I used to love Maxwell's previous tuna dish so much that I would order it as my entrée. Unfortunately, this version was disappointing. The tuna was okay but had very little flavor, and the cashew chimichurri sauce was mediocre at best. The Brussels sprouts were overcooked, and the sauce seemed like it was trying too hard without adding much to the dish. Dessert was crème brûlée, but it tasted like plain vanilla custard with very little flavor, topped with overly caramelized sugar and berries. I truly wish I had trusted my instincts and walked out. For what we paid, the meal was nowhere near the quality we expected. Honestly, the two-for-$25 meal at Applebee's would have cost a quarter of the price and probably would have been far more enjoyable. We will not be returning. read more

Highly recommend if you're in the area! I was in Muscatine for work and we stayed at The Merrill and am so glad Maxwell's is right in the lobby. We travelled at the end of January and after a long day of travel and many delays due to heavy low fog, we were definitely excited to have a restaurant right in the hotel. There is a parking lot across the street and a parking deck behind as well so there is plenty of parking. The restaurant is located right in the lobby and also has a full bar. My coworker and I were dying for a drink and some food after a long morning. The bar has speciality cocktails, but also a full bar, wine, and beer. You can check out their speciality cocktails, wine, and beer lists on their website as well as make reservations. For food, my coworker and I decided to share a few appetizers. We ordered the Brussels Sprouts, Wings (1/2 Honey Sriracha, 1/2 Ginger Scallion), and the Baked Goat Cheese. They were all DELICIOUS! The flavors were great and the portions were as well. I've never had goat cheese before and it was so amazing I couldn't stop eating it. The sriracha wings were spicy, but not overwhelming. Later, some other people met us and we ordered the shrimp tacos which were also very good. The next morning we also had breakfast and I ordered the Omelet which comes made-to-order and you can choose 4 different additions. It also comes with potatoes. All delicious. Additionally, the service was also great as well! If I'm ever back in Muscatine I will definitely plan to return. read more

The food never disappoints here. They take a lot of pride in presentation and flavor. I travel here once a month and have never had a bad meal. The wait staff are great, they get to know you after a few visits and are very quick to serve you. The restaurant is right in the Merrill hotel. It's very nice and well kept. Great fine dining feel without the need to be dressed to the nines. While a little more expensive than most other places in town m, the presentation and flavor make it worth it. read more

We went at 6 on a Thursday. The drinks were unusual, but very good - the lemon Meringue Martini was nice. The Stracchiatella appetizer was wonderful. The Ribeye was perfect - didn't need to use A1. Stopped in for lunch and had an outstanding selection of salads, sandwiches and sides! The Ruben and Berry burger were delicious. Both served with a side salad. The salads was excellent, fresh and flavorful. We had sides of clam chowder, sweet potato fries and wings. All were delicious with nice presentation. We've been to Maxwell's several times and were very pleased. Last night was the last time. Our server was slow and inattentive. even though she was not busy (she was standing at bar). We were seated and given drink list and sat for 10 minutes before she came for our order. Repeated requests for table service, salt and pepper. Salad very difficult to eat as it was in tiny pieces of lettuce, think dime sized. Pork chop ordered was requested to be cooked the least amount possible and was actually very dry and overcooked. The carrots side dish had peanuts sprinkled on them. I don't know how the chef expected you to eat them when you only have a fork and knife! The $300 would have been better spent elsewhere. read more

She had been waiting us - sweet person- and we were at our table within seconds. Rarely do I choose a selection from every course on the menu. Everyone agreed that in this case we had to. Here's what we went with. Starter (shared /4 ppl) Brussel Sprouts - get them. You'll thank me. Scallops Soup or Salad We all choose the Lobster Bisque Entree I ordered the Filet Oscar. It was paired with asparagus spears. My husband ordered the Sea Bass. It was paired with lemon risotto. Dessert Chocolate Torte Our friends enjoyed the Crème Brûlée Wine The Prisoner Red Blend King Estate Pinot Gris Side note: the wine list is very good The menu was terrific and our servers were outstanding. Truly outstanding. I don't recall our main servers name unfortunately. The wine steward, Ryan, opened and presented wine better than I've experienced in fancier restaurants around the world. Nice job! I was remiss in taking pictures. Too "in the moment", but I'm 100% fine with that. If your in the area, or in driving distance it's worth the drive. Exceeded Expectations While staying at The Merrill I was directed to Maxwells by the staff when I checked in. Being a veteran of many hotel restaurants and not always being impressed, I walked over to Maxwells to have a look before I went up to my room. What I saw was a very well designed dining area, very new and distinguished. The bar itself was shiny, charming and aesthetic. I went back to my room, had a quick workout in the fitness center, went for a nice long walk along the river, and then went to Warrior Crossfit for a WOD. When I got back to the hotel, I went back to my room changed, showered and heading down to Maxwells. I was very fortunate to arrive when I did as the restaurant was starting to fill up. I went to the bar and sat down and took in the ambiance for a couple of minutes. The bartender, who served me was a joy to talk to and I also stuck up a conversation with some folks at the bar who were staying at the Merrill as well. As you can imagine from all my activities that day I was famished, so I came with an appetite. Despite that over the last couple of days, I had consumed quite a bit of food. That said Maxwells was a perfect place to have a meal. The food was very well imagined, had just the right portion size and it was very high quality. I started off with one of the salads on the menu, a harvest salad which was composed of locally sourced items. The portion size just right and the ingredients were very fresh and high quality. My salad was composed of field greens, roasted beets, citrus, goat cheese, candied pistachios with a light coating of apple cider vinaigrette. This was a very appetizing and flavourful salad. Next up was the main and the side. Please note that some of the mains are served al la carte, and some have sides on the plate. The main dish was a summer feature, an amazingly light and flavourful pickerel dish about 7-8 ounces drizzled with a citrus vinaigrette, topped with lightly sauteed mixed veggies. This dish was top-notch, as an angler, I have caught and eaten pickerel shortly after catching it. This was was fresh and not fishy tasting at all. Pickeral itself is a light and flaky fish and should be prepared gently as it was at Maxwell's. They know what they are doing in the kitchen. My side was absolutely delicious creation, grilled and slightly charred asparagus with pecan smoked bacon, roasted peppers, with a light drizzle of balsamic. Wow just amazing, Maxwells is the perfect companion to the hotel as it is an extension of the high standard that defines The Merrill. read more

I ordered breakfast from here, it's expensive for one. I paid $12 for pancakes. Don't get me wrong they were huge but they came very burnt & i unfortunately found a hair in them as well. The breakfast potato's were good but they give you like 6 pieces for $4. I was just confused on how they could send it out like that knowing the pancakes were black, but since it was for take out I guess they just didn't want to remake them...? read more

For restaurant week we went here yesterday for the Chilean Sea Bass - Delicious! Tuna app was good too as well as my wife's pecan chicken! Service was sketchy bc they were over-whelmed by a party of 20 - ok. But....the price of my old Fashion $16? I can live with that - had to go to bar to order the next drink which was a Jefferson bourbon dble - when i got my bill i about shit my pants -She CHARGED $16 per shot?!?!?!?! $32 for a fkn watered down bourbon loaded with ice & water- Thats just plain WRONG!! We were a party of eight. The restaurant was not too busy, two or three tables were already seated by the time we arrived. Throughout the time we were there maybe one other table was seated. We ordered drinks which were slow to arrive. Eventually our food order was taken. There were some salads and sides - everyone ordered a main. Food coming out of the kitchen was very s...l...o...w... like 30 minutes slow between courses. I ordered a salad, the Berkshire pork porterhouse and side of potato mash. The salad was fine. Unfortunately the chop was cooked well beyond done that I couldn't cut it, much less eat it - but if you like it that way, then by all means. The mash was plain gooey. To our waiter's credit, my pork chop was taken off the bill, but there was no offer to order another main. The consensus of our party was that the food was just okay and not memorable. If they can work out the timing in the kitchen and not overcook the chops or serve gooey mash, the dining experience would be much improved. read more

Whoa, whoa, whoa. I came here for a business happy hour and loved the atmosphere and decor. We started by ordering appetizers - Cajun fries, Parmesan fries, wings, charcuterie and they were ALL delicious! We proceeded to order dinner and they knocked my salmon outta the freaking park. Perfectly cooked with the right amount of seasoning. I paired it with beautiful Brussels sprouts. I had to end the meal with their chocolate torte (don't judge me!) and I've gotta say it was 5 stars from beginning to end. Service was superb. I had the great good fortune to spend the night at the Merrill Hotel in Muscatine. It was absolutely wonderful. But even if you're not spending the night, Maxwell's restaurant is not to miss. EVERYthing was prepared to perfection. Breakfast omelet and potatoes were perfect and delicious. Their sandwiches and everything else was perfectly made. Treat yourself. The food and atmosphere -- which is very comfortable, whether with others or solo -- is so worthwhile. The prices are incredibly reasonable, so there's no reason not to.
