I started taking my daughter to Musical Children in January of 2013 when she was just over a year old. We have been going once a week for class for the past six months and my daughter has really gained a love of music, movement and a variety of instruments that are provided. The teacher Miss Carol has a wealth of knowledge about music and she shares her passion for music with everyone. When you sign up for the 16 week class you get a song book and a CD. We listen to the CD over and over and my daughter loves to dance to it. At each class we get to use a variety of musical instruments and we also sing along with little board books. Miss Carol shares with us her great love of Children's books too and she has a whole wall of books displayed and she will share with you about her favorites. I like how all of the instruments get sanitized after it has gone into a child's mouth. Miss Carol is very strict with her rules in the classroom, but as a former teacher myself, I can really appreciate her running a tight ship. I can highly recommend this interactive fast-paced music class for you and your baby/child (newborn 'til age 4). I enjoyed the time mostly because my daughter laughed, smiled, sang, danced and learned. I also appreciated the fast pace of activity and songs. Daddies seem to enjoy it, too. The cost of the class covers a 'semester' of classes (one day a week), musical CD and song book. Priority for time and day of sign-ups is given to current attendees. There are separate sign-up days for current parents/kids and new parents/kids. Don't delay in signing up as these classes offered 6 days a week (morn', noon, nite) fill up incredibly fast. Another bonus is second child in family is FREE! Ms. Carol Cesena is an experienced music teacher. She is inspirational and knowledgable. She keeps the studio incredibly clean and organized. No shoes inside, parents help in washing toys when babies suck on them, and small talk is kept to a minimum to keep the focus on our kids! I have attended "Miss Carol's" Musical Children class almost every Saturday for the past five and a half years, first with my oldest and middle daughters (who have since aged out), and now with my youngest daughter. All of them adore the program, and it is a treasured part of our weekly routine. Carol is a wonderful teacher who pours her heart and soul into the class, leading 22 sessions a week (three each on Sunday through Friday, and four on Saturday). She always decorates her studio to match a seasonal theme (e.g., Thanksgiving, Mother's Day), changing the decor on the walls as well as the selection on three bookshelves of books from what must be the world's largest collection of music books for children. The class itself is designed to instill a love of music and movement in children between the ages of 1 and 4 (although many families bring younger children who enjoy listening in). The reasonable cost covers up to two siblings, and gives you a CD of the music played in class and an accompanying songbook. This class is NOT for you if you want your child be a concert violinist at age 3. But it IS for you if you want your child to love music and dance, and develop a sense of rhythm through the use of percussive instruments. We have been attending Ms. Carol's classes for three (11-week) sessions now and I feel confident recommending her to everyone we meet. My son loves the interaction with the music, instruments and other children as well as Ms. Carol herself. Today was our first class with Ms. Karen who owns Musical Children's in Mira Mesa. Ms. Karen is ABSOLUTELY fabulous with her students. She greets everyone with a warm smile and gets to know her students and families. Everyone is invited and encouraged to participate with your little one(s). Ms Karen's first song with everyone is a joyous hello song that she incorporates all the kids names into. She then goes through many different songs that she adds marching, dancing, singing and musical instruments. My Granddaughter and I had a fabulous time! I have been in search of an activity for babies that isn't Gymboree and that encompasses music. This is is! Following the Music Class songs and activities, Teacher Carol runs a wonderful little program that allows babies up to 4 lots of fun and learning. She's very firm but fun, you can tell she has a love for music and children both. I've been taking my daughter who will be 2 soon, for the past three sessions now, and I can already see an improvement in her learning skills. I also take my son, who will be one in May, and he too is very interested. What's wonderful about this program, you get the music book with cd, to listen to at home. Musical Children has been one of the best classes I have done with my children. It is fun and fast paced. Every child gets their own instrument so the children never have to wait. There is a wonderful CD that comes with each session and we listen to it almost exclusively until the next session's! There are fun songs that teach my kids without them realizing how much they are learning. They are just having fun! Best of all it is affordable. Miss Karen is wonderful! She definitely loves music and loves the kids! Her class is full of fun and energy. Miss Karen includes a variety of songs and gives you a sense of rhythm with instruments and activities. My son loves her and the class. He enjoys singing and dancing in the class. I am so happy that I found this music class. Miss Karen is super nice. She has several class schedules every day, so you can for sure find one work for you. For example, she even has 6pm class on Monday and 6:15pm class on Tuesday. That's great for kids to attend after school. And she is very flexible with make-up time. Another thing I like very much is that Miss Karen provides CD, book, and audio to download for each semester. The collection of the music class songs is named for lovely animals. My son loves the monkey collection, the bunny collection, the bear collection...I should say he loves them all. And we will keep collecting more! Ms. Karen does a great job with the kids. My 3-year-old son loves going. The session moves really fast, which is good because it keeps the kids attention. Musical Children is run by a music teacher named Carol who had many years of experience as a piano teacher before opening this studio. Since she has no webpage, I'll give you the 411 here. General Info: - Her sessions are 11 weeks long and come out to be about $11/class, which is a great deal compared to other music classes for young children that run at least $13/class or more. - She does not allow any "make-up" classes, so if you miss a class, then tough. (She does allow you to have a friend & their child take your spot for the class you miss.) - She does not offer any free trial classes. If you'd like to check out her class, then you pay $10 for the class. She donates that $10 to the Scripps Public Library. - The classes are for children under 4. Children 4 and older are not permitted to participate. - Any second child (sibling) that is under 4, however, is free. This is great if you have an infant and a 2-3 yr old. Pros - - Carol really knows about music. She is really passionate about music. She is really passionate about teaching music theory (rhythms, etc) to you and your child. - This will give good exposure for your little one to different percussion instruments. - She is very organized and structured. - She is very clean. Every parent and child is required to use hand sanitizer wipes before class. No shoes in the studio (must wear socks). And if a child puts an instrument into the mouth, the parent must sanitize it right away. So if you fear the spreading of germs, then you don't have to be afraid at Musical Children. - She is a very nice person, and she is also very generous (donates regularly to the Scripps Public Library). Cons - - Not sure how much music theory my child really understood (at 2.5 yrs old). - She is very strict. Sometimes too strict. If a child puts an instrument in their mouth, she will MAKE SURE you know (in a way that could potentially make you feel embarrassed/ashamed), so that you can go sanitize it. If a child puts their hands on the glass door, she will wipe it down right away. If the child is too much in her face, she will immediately tell the parent to get their child (under control). These things are fine, it's just her blunt manner of expression that rubbed me the wrong way. - The class routine was very repetitive. I do get that kids need a routine so that they can learn, but I don't think it has to be exactly the same every time. She will even teach you the exact same lesson with the exact same words! It was like watching a video. I would hope that there would be a progression of learning in the 11 weeks, but I was really bored from the same exact songs done the same exact ways. - There's not much giggling and laughing happening in this class because of how structured it is. Overall, I'd say, if you're looking for a class for your child that is affordable and don't mind repetition, then try Musical Children for a session. Your child will get some music exposure. I'd say it was worth it for the one session but I would not sign up again. My child did not really enjoy it very much (he didn't seem to actually have fun in the class), and every time I told him it was time for music class, he said, "Noo...." It could just be my kid, since every one else on here gave her 5 stars, but I thought I could post a different perspective too. read more

I started attending Musical Children with my sister-in-law in 2001 when my daughter was about 5 months old; my niece was almost a year in age. I can attest that my daughter's love of hearing and appreciating music came from the classes that are fun and create a wonderful mother-child bond. All three of our children have gone to Musical Children, they are now 11, 9 and the youngest is 3. They have all attained a thirst for music due in no small part to Miss Carol and Musical Children. They all loved it, and have fond memories of the classes even to this day. This is the lasting impression that Miss Carol has had on them. Carol is wonderful, she truly loves what she is doing. An introduction to music at a young age is so important. It helps babies develop other skills, both mental and physical. We starting taking our kids when they were still very young and I'm sure that the skills that they learnt in the class are with them to this day. She emphasized that you must 'immerse' your children in music. That's why it's so important to play the CD's that she gives you and to play and practice the skills with them at home. This is a class that educates you as a parent as much as educating your kids. You need to go into it with this mindset to get the maximum benefit. read more

Both my kids have attended classes at Musical Children. I am always amazed at how enthusiastic Ms Carol is. She genuinely enjoys the children and allows kids to be kids (within safety guidelines of course). The classes are well organized and fun. Ms Carol's classes are for kids 4 and younger. My daughter--now 5-- has developed a musicality that I owe to Carol. She makes up her own songs, understands beats and rhythms, and enjoys music in general. I have attended Carol's Musical Children music classes for the past several years. First, my son was a participant, and now my daughter, who recently turned 3. We have always done the Saturday class and it is one of her favorite activities we do. She knows when it's time to head to music class and gets very excited, grabbing her shoes and running to the door! She loves the songs and instruments but most of all Carol! She is so thrilled to be there she runs to hug Carol each class. Carol clearly has a true love of music and children and it shows. As an elementary school teacher, I can attest to her wonderful teaching methods. She always has the children engaged and uses teachable moments to help the children learn about different instruments or musical terminology. She is always so full of energy and passion for what she does. Because of Carol's love of music, my daughter now loves music as well. She loves playing the CDs at home and playing along with her own instruments. Was told that she would hold my child's place. She said she would mail me a form which I took the next day to the location. When I get there our name isn't even listed and she gave the spot away. I understand spots fill up quickly but it just seems a bit untrustworthy. I know it's my fault for not coming right away but she didn't stress that there was any urgency and said she would hold the spot so no one else would take it. Muscial Children is a wonderful music class for young children. Our kids love this class and we do too. It's our Saturday morning routine where we can all have fun together as a family and the kids can get exposure to music in an interactive environment. Carol is a FANTASTIC teacher and is great with little ones. She is energetic, fun, and engaging and understands that children learn through example and doing. The class provides children with opportunities to learn songs and rhymes, encourage movement, and chance to play with many of the percussion instruments. We started our daughter with Musical Children when she was 1 and our son started at 2 months old. Both kids really enjoys and benefits from this class. We highly recommend it! read more

Our family has been in this program for 7 years and we love it! Ms. Carol is an excellent teacher and a great role model for the moms and kids. My daughter is a music class alumni but still asks to go to class and visit Ms. Carol. This is our last session with Musical Children and we are sad. I love this place! My daughter went when she was little. Now my son goes! The exposure to instruments and different types of music is great! It's definitely had long term benefits for my daughter. We have been going for 5 weeks now. It's a little basic and repetitive for older children but my 1 year old likes it. The teacher is obviously in love with her job and runs a tight ship but sometimes can be a little over the top with her rules, I mean kids have to build immunities too! but she runs a tight ship and is a good teacher and we like the classes. We'll probably sign up for another one after this one ends. If you children like music and instruments this would be something they would enjoy. We have been going to ms. carol for almost 3.5 years! I started my daughter when she was about 7 months old and till this day now 3.5 years old we have been attending. i also have a 22 month old and I started him at 5 months and a bonus is pay for the first chile and get the sibling for free. The price of the class is very feasible and worth it! My kids love Ms. Carol and her music! They love the hands on with the instruments, movement and reading a music book! We as a family are very satisfied with this class! I just wish the cut off age was not 4 and she would continue till the age of 6 or so :( But other than that we love it! read more

the class is cheap but not worth even the low price. the activities that the instructor does is pretty basic and nothing special. you don't really need any special training to do the things she is doing. the instructor is not engaging and seems like she is bored. maybe after so many years of doing the same thing, that's probably the reason why, but she hasn't tried to revitalize the program or do it differently to keep it current or exciting for the kids. i would recommend other programs that are out there and some that are free through the city college or the like.... read more

Lucky us---to have enjoyed some of these music classes before the girls were too old to attend! Carol's love for children and passion for music create a fun environment for stimulating little ones with songs, rhythm instruments, and movement. Each child is greeted by name during the class' welcome song. Since every family gets a CD and song book the kids get to know the music very well---the CD's from this music class are still the girls' favorite thing to listen to in the car! Carol often has a puppet on one of her hands that toddlers have fun running up to touch with big smiles on their faces. Very family friendly and interactive---not uncommon for moms, nannies, grandparents, and dads to be in the circle on the floor. Quite an impressive collection of rhythm instruments for the kids to experience and the huge gathering drum for everybody to play before class is fabulous! The studio is conveniently located and always plenty of parking spaces out front. read more

All 5 of my children have gone to Ms. Carol for music classes from the time they were 1 until they were 4. With my oldest son, we tried several music classes before we found Musical Children, and we were so happy when we did! There is simply no comparison. It was not the closest to my house, but I made the drive with all 5 of my kids because of Carol! She is the best. She has such a love of all things musical, and she imparts that to the kids. Her class is fantastic. So many different instruments and so much knowledge and excitement. My kids now have all gone on to play instruments and I'm sure it's because of the love they gained for music in her class. She does run a tight ship, and I'm very thankful she does...it gave my kids the opportunity to enjoy the musical instruments without the distraction of poorly behaved kids. I'm a little late in writing this review, but better late than never, right ;-)?! This class is a great introduction to music for little ones. Miss Carol is a great teacher! She is so enthusiastic and engaging. The children are mesmerized by her. She does have rules for the studio to keep it clean and orderly, which I can appreciate. The class is reasonably priced as it is 11 weeks, and supplies a book and a CD to learn the songs outside the classroom. I enrolled both of my children in her classes since before they were one year old. They are now ages 6 and 4. They absolutely LOVED it!! They still, to this day, ask to go to music class and we still listen to the CD's in the car. They like to name the different instruments in the songs from the CD and on the radio. It really has change the way they hear music. I'm so glad the had this experience. We only wish there was a class for older children. read more
