Was a patron here for over a year, but after yet another awful haircut I won't come back and can't recommend this spot to others. I liked the price and location and after my bad hair cuts I would communicate next time what I wanted and show photos. However both Wes and Kirk just cut hair how they want. Friends and family commented on my sloppy and uneven cuts. Several times I'd come home and try to fix things myself. Buyer beware. read more

After the salon near my house closed I had to find a new barber, and this place is close to work so I checked it out. I was a walk-in, not knowing they take reservations. I waited about 15-20 minutes, not bad. Patsy cut my hair and did a good job, did exactly what I wanted. The price at $23 was a bit more than my previous barber but the neighborhood is probably better. Plus, I would much rather support a local barber than one of those national chains where the quality is often poor. Cash or check only. Steady stream of putative regulars while I was there, so clearly the place does good business. Next time I will know to make a reservation in advance. read more

I'd be very cautious about using Mustang Barbers. I went for a walk in and the vibe was great. I honestly really liked my barber. He was kind and fun sort of a willie Nelson old school Texan type. The haircut on the other hand... I have no idea what happened but I look like my barber was blindfolded. Scheduled another appointment at my more regular shop tomorrow and praying they can fix it or I'll have to just buzz everything off. Paul, amazing work, sir. Lots of possibilities. I'll be seeing you again, brother. I was enjoying my lunch at the Thai restaurant next door. I needed a haircut, and look what was right there! How convenient. When I found the Yelp review, I called to see if I had to have an appointment. They said to walk on in. And I did. It's still a bit reminiscent for me of my days of yore, going to the Air Force barber, when we were kids, and you had to worry a little bit about how your hair might look the first time you walk out. I have avoided haircuts because I used to have super long hair for years. Now I actually have to deal with the speed of my hair growing again since I chopped it off several months ago. Well, I had a very demanding and complex set of specifications for this operation (and believe me, when you're used to getting one hair cut every 5 years or so, it's an operation!). I waited a measly 10 minutes when Paul came in the door and took charge of the place. I was up next and he had an appointment coming in in a little while. But he stayed the course, calmly and coolly responding to my requests and taking as long as was necessary to do the job right. He asked the next appointment to wait a bit when they arrived and they gladly did. Most people coming in were regulars, and they know how the place works. Back when I had enough hair to blanket a small village, I only trusted my locks to a select few and paid handsomely for their expertise. Flash forward to now and my main stylist is my boyfriend and his pair of trusty trimmers. But even he has his limits and it was time to find someone who could fancy up his handywork. Mustang Barbers is a testosterone-filled establishment for sure but I never once was made to feel out of place. I really just needed a little cleanup and walked in on a Saturday afternoon looking for someone with 10 minutes to spare. I'll have my usual. Long ago I fantasized with getting my hair cut at a real barber shop. My mom was one of those mom's who cut her kid's hair. I always had the same cut, with way too much left on top and with my curry hair it was more of a fro. Luckily I finally managed to break the cycle before high school. Since then I have bounced from barbershop to "salon" to stylists to just about anyone who cuts hair. I was never comfortable. I've had one person who cut my hair as if it were punishment, I was surprised I didn't lose an ear! To a girl who would massaged my scalp for 10 minutes only to make me feel dirty afterward. In between, there were many poor haircuts both high dollar and low dollar cuts. Sometimes one was good for 1-2 cuts, but then inconsistent. I have gone back and forth between barbers until I found Mustang Barbers. I was suspicious, like I always am when trying a new barber, but Donna was great! She quickly sized up my hair asked for my hair style and worked from there. She uses scissors too, so I don't feel like a poodle being groomed. Each time she takes the time to get it right. I've been going here for years, and will never go anywhere else. It really is the only real barber shop around. Not like these gimmicky type places, that lure you in for a bad haircut with women in short shorts, or ALL SPORTS shops. At Mustang, you can make an appointment, or just walk in. I've never seen a walk in wait very long at all either. It's mainly all guys of course, but hey, that's the way i like my barbershop. There's no frills, nothing fancy at all. We just sit there, and talk about sports or shoot the local breeze, and everyone talks across and over each other, it's great. It's family owned, my barber is the 3rd generation, and i hope he keeps this place going for forever. Cause it's a damn good haircut, and even better people. read more

Man what an awesome place. Old school barbers are hard to find, and when you do find one you keep them! This place was nothing short of stellar. You walk in, they had about 8-10 barber chairs set up. it felt like a place a man should be. Barbers chatting it up with the customers, talking sports and whatever they feel like. Its a mans place. The way it should be. I get a basic cut and a beard trim, $17. Man you cant beat that! the barber was great and cleaned me up nice. If/when i go back to Dallas, im going back to see that place. I've tried almost a half dozen barber places now since living in Dallas and have only come across one that so far has met my standards for a reasonably priced, good trim. I had to get a haircut once a week/every two weeks in college along with every other cadet, where officers and even the resident 3-start general would frequent, so suffice to say, I'm pretty well-aquainted with barbershops.. and the whole "Man's Barbershop" cliche. **wincing in pain at use and even thinking of that hackneyed, banal qualifier** So I read a few reviews of this place, figuring on my list of searches, I'd give it a try since it was a little closer to where I lived, compared to the one nearer Parkland. Now what I consider an authentic, "man's" barbershop is one where guys just walk in, take a seat and sid'down, and watch whatever sports is on the TV while waiting his turn. Not this place. I come in, see seven barbers just diddling around by their empty chairs whose expressions took on this look of shock and horror when they realized I was a "walk-in" as they each chorused probably two or three if not more times as if I, their compatriots, or my gf didn't catch the implication the first time. Didn't realize I was getting my nails done. Next time I'll call and make an appointment with my hair stylist. Moving on, as four of the barbers continued to just sit in their chairs for the next 30-40 minutes doing nothing--oh wait, reading something on the iPhone or the paper--all the while insisting that I would be "squeezed in as quickly as possible," I began to draw comparisons between these sissy-style barberships I've come across thus far after a year in Dallas, compared to the ones back in College Station or even back in Hurst (my old hometown barber to whom I've driven numerous times to get a great haircut and razor shave for $15-7). Eventually, after much patronizing as if these vain glorious sculptors and fine-artisans of hair were doing me a tremendous honor and boon to sit on their thumbs for 3/4s of an hour, insisting I'd somehow be fitted in despite their clearly "busy" schedule (only two chairs then were filled), I got to sit in one of the barber's thrones. Haircut = electric trimmer + basic scissor/comb trimming. Not even a straight-razor shave for edging/back/sideburns. Was it a great haircut even? Having realized how mutable hair is and done what we jokingly called "buddy-cuts" back in the day, it was average, and I know a guy near Lake Highlands Station who coulda given me the same for $13. This one cost me $20. (The other place I'd go nearer to my school but more off the beaten path in terms of my commute between school/home was $20 and included a much better trim and razor-shave and even a scalp massage). Not to say the individual who did my hair wasn't an amiable fellow, and the conversation was standard. But for what I waited and paid and for the attitudes I detected, Jason and the Argonauts better have been questing for the damn Golden Fleece off the top of my head after it was all said and done. On a side note: Shoe shines? Well, they apparently discontinued that service (I suppose from some walk-in individual), but if you really want one that bad, get a can of polish and a cotton t-shirt from Target and just spend about 2-5 minutes spit'n'shining. While it may add to that old-school feel of a classic barbershop, I couldn't help shaking the vibe that its mere presence somehow factored into the cost of my haircut. Love this place! Found it when I first moved to Dallas and won't get my hair cut anywhere else. I used to go to the chain places.. yeah this place costs a couple bucks more but its still very reasonable, and the haircut is far better. So is the conversation. Its a guy's place. I get my hair cut by Travis, he's a younger guy, which is cool, because this is the only time I've ever had a guy my age cut my hair. Makes it much easier to relate to him while you're sitting there. I've been having my head cleaned up by Phil and his staff for 34 years. Back when Phil had hair too. Now his son is cutting my sons hair, since they all have some. I just go in for the atmosphere these days. OK, not really, I still have some hair to cut but I would go in just to talk to Phil if I didn't. There is not a more comfortable place in the world to get a haircut. Everyone is family. If you have to have boobs hanging in your face while you get a haircut you need to go to a style salon and keep on paying $50 for a haircut. Haven't had time to stop in at my barbershop, up in McKinney, and won't anytime in the next foreseeable future. Still, I needed a haircut. So, being in Upper Greenville, I checked out Mustang Barbers. I can't really complain! I followed the advice of several on here and called ahead to make sure they could give me a cut today...no problem there. They fit me in with Todd at noon. As I pulled up and walked inside, there were five guys working and all of them were friendly and easygoing. Todd got me in early, too. As I was getting my haircut, a couple of guys came in without appointments and were seen immediately. Don't know if it was because of the time of day or the actual day, but the guys cutting acted like it wasn't a big deal at all. I was a little worried about this, after reading a particular review on here, but I think that guy must have a chip on his shoulder, because these guys were legit barbers with a good atmosphere. Only down-side was it's about $6 more than what I'm paying; although, given where they're located, I can see that being a typical price. All in all, enjoyed the cut, the feel of the shop, and yes, they DO give straight razor shaves for cleaning up around the ears and neck-line. (Again, what's up with the Aggie?) read more

This is the type of barber shop that you see in movies where a bunch of guys sit around and talk about what's going on in the world of sports while getting a good trim or a shave. This is actually where I was when the Cliff Lee deal went down. And when ESPN was making the Pony Exce$$ documentary, where did they go for local sports talk? None other than Mustang Barbers! As for the haircuts themselves, Travis and the rest of the guys will make you feel at home and give you a good haircut that would cost $50 anywhere else. Todd does a great job. I have been going to Mustang for the last two years since returning to Dallas. This is a real barbershop that looks like a shop from 1950. Nothing trendy, just a great haircut at a reasonable price. My hair, whats left of it, is difficult for most barbers to cut. They just wet it down, cut it, and when finished it looks like hell more often than not Here that doesn't happen. Todd is a real barber and a master of his craft. He makes me look like I got the haircut I wanted. As to the people that want to drop in any time you should realize that this place is busy because they do great work Be ready to wait or come another day when you can't remember to set an appointment. read more

I know its tradition to sit facing in but I want to see how my hair is being cut, I asked for something not to be touched and it was plus the person cutting my hair cut his hand open and never cleaned the working area or changed the razor holding. Excellent place for a haircut. When I moved to Texas, I wanted to find a barber so that I had someone to see regularly. For a few dollars more than a mediocre chain-style cut, this place did a phenomenal job. Each time I go, they're consistently perfect. Can't imagine going anywhere else at this point.
