We went to celebrate a birthday at our long time favorite restaurant. The Spokane institution The Mustard Seed. We showed up to a half filled dinning room and told that they couldn't seat us in the bar until the bartender caught up. We put on a "list and told to come back in 15 min. After 15min we came back and again the hostess had to go talk to the bar twice to see we could be seated. We didn't care if there was a wait. The bartender told no she was still too busy (with only two people seated in the whole bar), hostess came back to say it would still be a while. After watching two other tables being seated during this whole issue we left and took our business else where. The original founder Dave would be ashamed of the service to his customer that I got tonight. Sorry Dave your crown jewel restaurant has lost its luster!!! read more

As the Corona Virus quarantine wears on, we decided to order delivery from Mustard Seed after seeing a commercial on tv. We were delighted with the quality of the food. The Siamese Beef had real chunks of quality beef, not the typical cheap cuts. The Pad Thai was among the best we ever ordered. The Sweet and Sour Pork was equally flavorful and generous. The delivery guy had a milk crate to place the delivery on so I wouldn't have to bend down after he rang the bell and "safe-distanced." There are other Asian take-outs nearer to us but Mustard Seed was a happy discovery we will visit again. THANKS COVID!!! read more

My husband and I used to go here quite often for date night but life got ahead of us and we hadn't gone in awhile. When we went back recently, the food quality seemed to have changed. We got the halibut Osaka- it had a rubbery texture and smelled a little fishy. As this was the dish we always used to get and never had previous issues, we asked if they had changed their fish vendor or if it was maybe just the fish on our plates. We were told "we get what we get and there's nothing else we can tell you". Even though we didn't eat any of the items on our plate, we were told we couldn't exchange it for something else. When I wrote in to see if there was a way we could find out if the fish vendor had changed so we do not spend another $50 on a meal we aren't going to eat, we received no response. This place has always been beloved by the family. When in Montana or Spokane everyone looked forward to the food and family time together. Never again will we go to this restaurant the food was absolutely not edible it was cold The bill came to over $160 we were totally ignored by the waitress. It was the worst visit we have ever had . We hadn't been in awhile because last time we went it was disappointing. So we went for Restaurant Week and it was pretty good. The service was VERY good. We had the beef dish and a chicken dish that was offered for the special. The beef dish didn't have much beef or mushrooms as advertised...mostly large chunks of veggies, but the chicken dish was good. I always enjoy the salad/slaw. We had the shrimp with wasabi sauce for our appetizer which was yummy. I had a tangerine martini which wasn't very sweet...fresh and lovely. Dessert was not great. I don't know who they buy their cake from, but it had really thick hard frosting without much flavor. Neither of us enjoyed our dessert. Walked in the door to.great customer service. Very attentive and actively engaged with customers. Ordered the dynamite shrimp as an appetizer and the chicken teriyaki as the main course. The shrimp had a light crispy coating which was nice and the spice was not overpowering. Definitely a shareable size appetizer. The teriyaki bowl was a good size portion and after the shrimp I could only eat a few bites. It did have a good flavor though. I will be taking the rest home with me to eat later. My family and I went here for dinner. It took about 5 minutes before we were even approached by our waitress. When our food came my families was good but mine was cold. The waitress was told and took it back to the back. About 2 minutes later my plate returned with microwaved food. So my chicken Osaka was now tough but hot. I could not eat it. Long story short the manager was called and the waitress came instead. She was rude to us at this time and lied. I guess the manager did not think it was her job to talk to us. Note to management: Having a server tend bar, or vice versa does not work. It took us almost an hour to get through dinner because our server was doubling as a bar tender. It was WSU football and GU Bball night so the bar was really busy. As a result, the waiter/bar tender was not able to oversee the tables as he should. He gave it his best shot but it was just more than he could handle The food was OK, certainly not the standard that we have come to expect at the Mustard Seed. I think part of the problem is it sat a while in back waiting to be carried to the table. Hopefully management will get thier act together. I would hate to see this place die from neglect. read more

This is not an Asian restaurant. I love and have spent my life eating various types of Asian cuisines. I love the wonderful complexity of flavors that include spices and other ingredients cooked just to the point of mouth-watering perfection. This is not that place. My chicken coconut curry was indescribably horrible. There was no hint of curry or coconut. My daughter had what was called pad Thai. My daughter loves that dish and has had it in many restaurants. The dish she was served was more like sweet and sour mushy noodles. She said "this is not pad Thai". This restaurant was recommended by older friends who visit Spokane weekly. They really like this place. The service was very good the atmosphere was well appointed and clean. The other diners appeared pleased with the food. However, if you enjoy a more authentic Asian eating experience, I would give this place a pass. read more

I first ate at the Mustard Seed when it was located only in Missoula, and I loved it. When it came to Spokane I was overjoyed and continued to enjoy the food for many years. Sadly, that's no longer the case. Here are the details from our latest online order: 1. Even though we reiterated the fact that in three out of the last five orders they have neglected to include the sauce for the delicious Chicken Osaka, they left it out again! Strike 1. 2. We ordered shrimp wontons. They sent pork. To make it worse, the pork morsels were dime sized. Strike 2. 3. The once delicious BBQ pork and sesame seed dish has now devolved into large chunks of flavorless pork loin, and the wonderful hot mustard sauce has been watered down. Strike 3. 4. They asked if we would like extra sauce for the teriyaki beef. This puzzled, us because there has always been quite a bit of sauce. Not anymore. It was dry and less tender than previous. Strike 4. 5. The sweet and sour shrimp was pretty good, except for about a third of it that was over cooked to the point of being inedible. Strike 5! I don't know how many strikes a formerly wonderful restaurant should get, but five seems more than enough. Had this been a one of a kind episode, we would certainly give it more chances. I avoid chain type restaurants so much lately because I am a support local gal but this place was pretty decent. The miso soup was weird though - I like miso with mushrooms, onions, and miso - there were weird noodles and I didn't much like that. It's pretty much Americanized asian and I am not much of a fan of that - the lettuce wraps were pretty good. I had the halibut caesar and the fish was slightly overcooked and the caesar dressing wasn't very flavorful. The gyoza was tasty, but not memorable. TERRIBLE QUALITY AND SERVICE. Ordered Saturday 1-30-21 @630 and it took over an hour I live 10 minutes away. We got the wrong rice(white not fried) the lettuce wraps were complete s*** they were basically shredded lettuce! How am I supposed to eat that. And the spicy garlic chicken was stone cold. They asked if we needed silverware and even how many people and still didn't send any. Spending $100 with a $10 tip was not worth it save your money don't get this. When our food came out it was kind of mushy and drenched in sauce, I was kinda disappointed it was also a TON of rice instead of the entree as well. I just feel like if I'm paying 12 to 15 dollars for my food I expect more than just a huge pile of rice and a tiny bit of chicken. We also got an appetizer of the seared ahi and it smelt and tasted super fishy which was a little concerning. Once upon a time on Spokane, The Mustard Seed was an institution. It was a top choice for proms, anniversary dinners, and other special events. I regret to say, the mighty have fallen. My wife and I visited and suffered a terrible disappointment for a Saturday night dinner. We started with the coconut shrimp, which were giant balls of uncooked dough wrapped around otherwise tasty shrimp. We inquired if this was how they were supposed to be and they insisted it was not. After a remake I'm sorry to say it wasn't much better. Our dinner wasn't much better. In fact, the only thing saving this from being a 1-star review was the great service we received. I'd love to see The Mustard Seed reclaim its spot in the Spokane restaurant scene, but I just can't recommend it at this time. read more

This evening I was blown away by the phenomenal service and attention given to us by the wait staff. Everything was done efficiently and with a smile. The food was delicious. I can never come here and not get a side salad just to have a chance to taste that delicious ginger dressing. I think about it for more often than a normal person should think of a salad dressing. I always get the off menu Teriyaki chicken and green beans and am never disappointed. My kiddo gets the combo veggie and noodle bowl off the kid's menu and it's enough for multiple meals. This place has been around forever. I remember going to the valley location as a kid. Sadly, that one closed down. But on the bright side, they opened a bunch of Noodle Express locations instead. I can handle that. Some things to note: 1. Their white rice is cooked in chicken broth. So if you are a vegetarian like me, order the brown rice. 2. The hot and spicy tofu and peppers is the best thing on the menu. 3. Anything drenched in their osaka sauce is the second best thing on the menu. 4. They have the best thousand island dressing ever. I could drink that stuff. The Mustard Seed is always a great standby restaurant for when we can't think of anywhere else to go. Whenever I'm in Spokane, I HAVE to get my Mustard Seed fix. I've been obsessed with their almond chicken for years, and have never been able to find an almond chicken dish that I like as much as theirs. You also can't go wrong with the bong bong chicken or the shrimp fried noodles. When I dined at Mustard Seed this week, we were quickly seated and all of our dishes were ready within 15 minutes (which was great because our group was starving)! Our only complaint was that the family style portions seemed a bit smaller than what we'd been given in the past. We typically order the same dishes (the ones mentioned earlier in this review), but had to order an additional shrimp fried noodle dish this time because it wasn't quite enough. Was looking for a decent and reliable Asian delivery place. Looked around, and the Mustard seed looked pretty Good. They said that THEY deliver. I ordered online, their picture to portion sizes looked good, their prices seemed ok for what they portrayed, HOWEVER, come to find out they are delivering through doordash (not mentioned anywhere on the site, nor was I redirected to a site), I was charged much more for the food because of that, and when I got it, it was nothing as portrayed, spent about $20 on sweet and sour pork, when I got it, the box was nearly empty, I could fit the contents in one hand. On top of that the food was cold, and smelled stale. The site also did not provide a way to give feedback, or rectify order mistakes. This was supposed to be a nice experience before I switched to Keto, and they dashed it out the door. I was drawn to this restaurant by Tripadvisor, Google, and Yelp reviews. It seemed to be doing a rather brisk business when we arrived, so I felt relatively comfortable in my selection. We ordered the vegetarian spring rolls as an appetizer. They arrived in a reasonable amount of time with the prescribed save and a soy vinaigrette recommended by our server. The latter was oily and devoid of flavor, and the same can be said for the other sauce as well. My husband ordered the curry chicken noodle dish and I had the fried noodles chicken only. Both noodles arrived with an over abundance of noodles and other finely chopped ingredients. The extra sauce recommended by the server for the curry noodle dish did little to combat the dryness of the dish, and the fried noodle dish was too salty to eat. Our server was quick to remedy the situation and recommend a different dish. I opted for the pad thai with chicken. It arrived at our table drowning in a brown sauce the color of balsamic vinegars and with 1/2 cup of scallions, shredded carrots, parsley--not sure why it was all necessary--and over-cooked rice noodles. The 2 dishes had fresh ingredients but were relatively under-seasoned. The manager (Kevin) came by and swapped our dishes for their Chicken Osaka which was very very good.
