That "sauce" dripping down the bottom of the container is mostly oil

Sorry my fellow Foodies who rated My China Cafe with 4 or more stars, I think maybe Covid has removed your taste buds. I waited until my 2nd time ordering food from here to review. #1 message to management : change the frying oil once in a while. SOOO easy to tell when they don't as fried foods come out dark, hard crunchy, and with an odd taste. I ordered the Triple Delight with beef, shrimp, and chicken. greasy mess that you could see the oil. Satay chicken sticks were over cooked, hard on the outside, and greasy dark meat chicken on the inside. Fried pork dumplings had an odd meaty center. I've eaten this type of "fast food"Chinese food for over 35 years at many, many places all over NJ and sorry this is one place that I will just skip a meal before ordering again.

    Roast pork wonton noodle soup

Chinese take out joint with a few surprising authentic dishes. I was feeling some wonton noodle soup on a rainy Saturday, but I wasn't about to drive to Chinatown. Fortunately, i discovered that My China Cafe was still open at 10:30pm, so my friend and I drove over to grab some food. They have a surprising number of authentic Chinese menu items. I ended up ordering the roast pork wonton noodle soup, the West Lake soup, and a few pieces of Magician fried chicken. The roast pork wonton noodle soup was a bit disappointing, since the wontons were typical of other Chinese takeout places and the broth was bland. Price wasn't bad though. The magician fried chicken is skinless fried chicken. Whatever the batter is, it's seasoned well. The chicken is good and it's cheap. West Lake soup is my favorite Chinese soup. Initially, it came with no cilantro, the signature ingredient of the soup. I inquired, and the chef was impressed by my knowledge of traditional Chinese food, stating that the cilantro isn't included by default because many people complain about it. Not a bad spot for late dinner takeout.

I got laid off from my job in Hackensack, which was a few blocks away, in June. I got a new job quickly but they are outside the delivery zone. I'm so sad. My new job is in Oradell. Such bad Chinese food over there. Horrible. I can't take it. I miss My China Cafe tremendously. I might have to stop there soon to just say hi to Jenny and Steve..... obviously while grabbing some of the best take out Chinese in Bergen county.

    Chicken and Broccoli lunch speci

Ordered delivery for this place. Came in a perfectly timely manner. Ordered chicken and broccoli lunch special with wonton soup, cheese wontons, and homemade ice yea. That Ice yea they make is rocking. I normally never get that from anyway and I'm very happy theirs was delishhh. The chicken and broccoli was good too. Their amount of meat to vegetable to rice was good. Their rice was realllly good. The crab wontons were the only iffy thing. They were way over cooked and barely anything in the inside. Could be made a lot better. They came with plenty so I was upset they all tasted the same. Womp. Deff would try another lunch special from here.

It is similar to Sichuan/Szechuan cuisine in ways, in that there is an emphasis on spicy foods, although the spice profiles differ. It is in the space formerly occupied by a different Chinese restaurant called Joyce (RIP - I loved and miss their short-lived foray into seafood boils). Although there are many great authentic (meaning regionally specialized) Chinese restaurants in Bergen County and northern NJ, including several Sichuan places, this is the only Hunan one I'm aware of (without venturing further south into NJ), and is certainly one of the nicest Chinese restaurants atmosphere-wise, with an elegant dining room. If you want to try the interesting and authentic dishes, of which there are plenty, order from the sections of the menu labeled with "Hunan" or "Home Style." The soups and cold appetizers are very traditional too. The house speciality is the Hunan steamed fish head with pickled chili - the platter is quite impressive and takes 20-30 min to prepare. You can add tofu (recommended) or noodles for an additional $5. We ordered this but since I'm not a fish head fan (and like my fish very simply dressed) - I think it was a type of carp - the appreciation for it was lost on me. It's topped with a heap of red chilis but is actually not as spicy as it looks. Personally I prefer the fish fillet dishes such as the fish with ginger, which has very tender filet slices. I loved the soup dumplings (large and soupy), shrimp with salted egg yolk (or any salted egg yolk dishes, which aren't easy to find), and enjoyed the tender sautéed beef dishes like beef with spring onion or the spicy green pepper with steak, with crunchy peppers that give a piquant refreshing kick. They have whole Peking duck (Beijing roast duck)! The menu only shows pricing for the whole duck but we asked for half and they obliged. To be honest it's not the best Peking duck I've had but the balance of crispy skin (that's yet not too fatty) to generously shaved lean duck meat was unimpeachable. And they use high-quality crepes that are superbly thin but do not tear. The lo mein is also pretty good - it's slightly smoky and is better than common. Parking tip: there are only a few spots in front but there is a parking lot in the back of the building with plenty of spaces. There are lots of exciting and exotic menu offerings and still many we'd like to try, so we'll be back repeatedly.

I've also noticed that beef orders are touch and go, because the meat pieces tend to be rather tough. That said, I love the seasoning and saucing here. Tough meat aside, their beef and string bean meal has become one of my recent favorites. My husband raves about their spicy Chinese eggplant dishes, and he's been pretty happy about any chicken dish he's ordered. So many the golden rule is to stick with chicken over other proteins? Unlike other Chinese takeout spots in the area, they don't take delivery orders. Delivery orders can be fulfilled either through UberEats or through their website, which seems to outsource orders to another delivery service. I've used the nameless delivery service once and got the order just fine, but the ordering process is somewhat inflexible (e.g. my husband's favorite order from the lunch special menu isn't available as a standalone entree and there's no way to make those requests through the website, so we had to do a pickup order just so we could ask a person to make it happen). There are very few parking spots out front, so we've often had to double park when picking up orders, with one person waiting in the car while the other runs in to pay.

I don't like that they put lettuce in it. Didn't taste like cabbage to me. I ask for it without that usually. Decent though. One time I called and they were out of lo mein noodles! How does that even happen?! Egg Foo Young: this is actually pretty good from here. Greasy though. Pizza Egg Roll: I'm a fan of these from Kennedy Fried Chicken, but not a huge fan from here. Greasy and dare I say too much cheese? I'm a huge fan of cheese, but it was almost too much and not enough marinara inside the balance wasn't there. This is the only Chinese place in the area that has these. They also have Philly cheese steak rolls which I haven't tried yet (had them at a place in Teaneck though and they were so good!) Chicken wings: well seasoned, but WAY too greasy. Fries: again too greasy. Overall this place is "ok" but definitely not my favorite in Hackensack. Too greasy, but it is cheap.
