The man that I spoke to that runs this operation was so rude, aggressive and unprofessional that I was shaking by the end of our phone call around the design details for the two t-shirts I needed printed. I provided to him numerous highly detailed emails about what I was looking for with my t-shirt design and they were clearly skimmed over by him as his responses back rarely matched the questions I had posed. He finally made the aforementioned phone call to me to talk about the designs and not only did he not listen to me and my needs but he constantly talked over me with his tone becoming more and more elevated and angry because I begged him to give me a second to finish a sentence so we could get on the same page. Ultimately he said "I don't think I want to do this job anymore..." which was fine because at that point I was going to suggest the same as I felt so berated. I think he believes that he is an "expert" in design and is offended if a client (who was a former graphic designer and has been working in the fashion industry for decades) has a different opinion or need. I highly recommend that you do not work with this company unless you have zero opinions or expectations of your end product. read more

I came to My Trick Pony because I was on a quest. For the longest time I wanted a t-shirt with a cowgirl on it. I'm not into country music or anything, I just think cowgirls are cool. They ride horses, wear hats and have pistols strapped to thier hip. I long to be a cowgirl one day. Anyhow, I never found just the right kind of t-shirt. She had to be a busty, curvy, sexy cowgirl with a vintage 1950's pin-up girl kind of look. Classy with just a subtle hint of trashiness. Not easy to find. Within about 10 minutes of arriving at MTP Matteo and his trusty side-kick intern Nathan were on the case. We searched the internet for just the right girl. We found a few 'reverse-cowgirls', but I couldn't wear that kind of t-shirt to work....or to my mom's....or in front of children. Using thier graphics software and their mammoth-huge monitor, the image was turned into a single color grahic and then heat=stamped onto a tank top I selected from their stock. My t-shirt cost $35, might be pricey but no one will ever have a cowgirl like mine. While the graphic for my t-shirt was being prepared I chatted with Matteo and had a great time. My Trick Pony is amazing for custom gear! When I priced out a project of getting American Apparel sweatshirts with our company logo on them, My Trick Pony was the least expensive and, by far, the friendliest! They finished our project fast and hand-delivered the new sweatshirts themselves! I always get fast email responses when I send an email about new gear to print - a lot of businesses are too "old school" to do much by email and are way slower to respond. I decided to offer a customized hoodie and t-shirt to my husband for his birthday. I did not know how to proceed really so I went on Yelp and found My Trick Pony. With their amazing reviews, I had a good feeling about the company and decided to work with them without asking any other businesses for quotes. I sent an email to My Trick Pony to describe what I had in mind. After receiving the HD logos, Mila was quick to respond, designed how the hoodie & shirt would look and was just extremely helpful. I had a few comments and he was quick to send the revised designs. I ended up buying my own hoodie (American Giant -- they do not offer customization FYI) and t-shirt since I wanted specific colors. My Trick Pony also has their own gear to customize (like American Apparel t-shirts). I dropped off the hoodie and shirt at MTP's mailbox for them to print on. Sometimes I wish I had a trick pony. I would teach it to jump through flaming hoops or "accidentally" run up and nuzzle cute random girls. It would almost be as good as this shop. The owner Matteo is fabulous (accent on the fabu). He is creative, funny, helpful and probably helps little old ladies across the street. My Trick Pony regularly has new designs brought in by local artists and you can flip through the books looking for a design that you can further customize to your heart's content. You can also bring in your own design. Matteo will be patient and make helpful suggestions on why bright pink on lime green is maybe not the most flattering color combination. I especially love the fuzzy raised t-shirt prints. The fuzzyness has to be cared for, but everyone likes to touch my t-shirts so it works for me. They'll print on anything: underwear, sweats, shorts, skirts, that secret corset collection you keep in the closet under your stairs. Anything! You should go in there, say hi to Matteo and sit on the comfy couch. read more

So, Mimi's birthday is upon us, and while we've already gotten her a present, we need a little extra something to bring to her fete. What I decide that I need, more than anything in the world, is a t-shirt with Mimi and her beloved dog Nacho being carried off by pterodactyls. "I, uh, need a t-shirt for my friend's birthday today." "Okay, any idea what you want on it?" "Well, I have the artwork." "Okay, e-mail it over." I e-mail it over, with the note, "here is the artwork of...well, I think the picture speaks for itself." Matteo gets immediately back to me, and tells me what I suspect...that the picture is too detailed, although they can do a sub dye, which will have a faded effect. I opt for this, and later I went in person to get everything settled. Matteo did an admirable job of trying to dissuade me from doing the exact print...he was so worried that it might be something that Mimi would never wear, and offered to whip up a cool graphic tee with the same "Mimi and Nacho get carried off" theme. He is so concerned and cool about you getting something amazing that you unequivocally love, and I really think that's at the heart of My Trick Pony's success. Being in the store is certainly more than enough to make you want to design as many cool graphic tees as will fit in your closet. Inspiration runs rife from wall to wall, from the books and decals left around, to the fabulous pony themed interior. You must go there. It's as simple as that. read more

While I've seen the end product from My Trick Pony, it was only yesterday afternoon that got me into the actual store. Very nice people who work there (my friend was getting a t-shirt printed with a design she brought on cd and they printed it right there in about 20 minutes). There are some cool original designs you can have printed yourself, or they'll print just about anything. They even sell some other random stuff like stuff animals. They also have art shows, even movie nights (with limited edition tees as part of the ticket), so it's sort of like a fun community as opposed to just a store. Hit them up some time, very fun time! She had been dying for a shirt with an adding machine (don't ask) on it for a good year, and after I stumbled into My Trick Pony a few lucky days before her birthday, I knew her dream would come true. Not a fan of this operation. The owner was pleasant but creatively passive. Good quality American Apparel brand as used for the tee shirts and hoodies. From my point of view, the final products were almost borderline mediocre. Before choosing this vendor, I had read all the outstanding Yelp reviews which helped sway my decision. The reality is that SF has no other companies doing this type of service unless you're ordering in volume. I take full responsibility for my poor choice. Live and learn. The only reason I'm writing this today is because I just washed the three items produced by MTP and am as disppointed with them now as I was when I puchased them. read more

I was here recently for a private party, and the space actually works reasonably well for that purpose. There's a small prep area in the back (fridge, microwave, sink, counter) and a space to set out your own food and drinks. The movie screen is great, though it certainly works better if your intent is for the movie you bring to be background entertainment rather than the focus of the event. (MTP hosts their own movie nights sometimes also.) The main focus is custom T-shirts, and they have a strong following. During our party at least 3 sets of regulars stopped by thinking MTP was hosting an event. The shirts look nice, but at $25-30 apiece, they're far more than I'm willing to spend on a shirt. MTP also hosts art openings and displays work by locals. TRIVIA: "Ponies", which grace this store in art, statuary, and toy form, are often distinguished from "horses" based primarily on height, with the dividing line being 14.2 hands (58 inches) tall at the withers. read more

Pick a color and a design (or if you're graphically design capable such as myself, design your own) and wah-lah! The store is a sweet little space with cool designs all over to pick from. And Mateo is excellent. He'll definitely give you his two cents on your design, but he knows his stuff and we'll do whatever it takes to help you out. He's got this funky custom cutter from France with a variety of design and shirt colors to choose from. My friend held a private 30th bday bash (a surprise one!) for her boyfriend. Not only were they accomdating during the entire party, they were totally cool to chop it up with. We stumbled into this place off the street one night when they were having an opening reception for one of the graphic designers and had a great time. My Trick Pony features limited edition tshirts from a different graphic designer every month. You pick the color and style of your tshirt and then they apply the graphics for you while you wait. Go by this month and see the "Things You Stuff" collection. If you hurry you might be able to get one that look like my new favorite tshirt. read more

Based off reviews, decided to go with My Trick Pony to order a bunch of t-shirts for my office. The final product was delivered on time, but they were really slow to respond and repeatedly made me nervous that they wouldn't meet the requested deadline because of their lack of communication. Upon going through the shirts that were shipped, discovered there was a lot of variance in sizes/styles. I just wanted standard gray Men's and Women's tees in an assortment of sizes... but we got a bunch of Youth tees thrown in replacement of requested sizes, which messed up a lot of sizing for who got what within the team. That was super disappointing. Now I have a bunch of extra youth-sized tees (which I think are supposed to be Womens - Small) that don't fit anyone, and members of my team who didn't get shirts because the appropriate sizes weren't delivered correctly. read more

I wanted to give him a mental snapshot of what was going on in my brain, but he didn't need it; he has a special lens into your creative subconscious. Anyway, he made the shirt and I was happy. Bottom line: This place is the best. They make custom graphics absolutely painless - even fun! They are super nice folks, the shop is fun and the prices are totally reasonable. Don't hesitate - go see them. I can't say enough good things about my experience at My Trick Pony. Like so many people, I had a very specific idea of what I wanted done, but no idea how to do it. I wanted to make a shirt for my sweetie for Christmas with one word on the front, in a very stylized font. After much laboring over how to do it, my super graphic design buddy said, "Have you tried My Trick Pony?" I called the shop about two weeks before Christmas - sure that I would find them harried, over-booked and way too cool. Matteo was wonderful and completely reassuring on the phone. He told me to come on in and explain what I wanted. I made the drive over from Oakland and found the delightful shop. Matteo and Mica were there and were, again, wonderful. The shop is fun to be in and there's lots to look at, without being overwhelming. It's a refreshing combination of hip and low-key. I was a little nervous, but Matteo assured me there was nothing to be embarrassed about. (I think they've seen it all in there.) Mica helped me find the perfect font in no time and made a perfect recommendation for the color combination of graphic and shirt. They were both very sensitive, as well as hilarious and fun. This place is professional and relaxed. I was expecting to have to come back later for my shirt, but they printed that sucker within 30 minutes of my walking in the door (and most of that time was me dragging my feet about the color).
