At Himalayan kitchen I got to sample several Indian bites: Coconut veggie curry, chicken tika masala and lamb curry with naan bread. All great but the chicken tika is unforgettable and the yogurt sauce for the naan so fresh and tasty! I enjoyed hearing Mo share our local history but even more than that, I loved learning about the lives the man changes thru his other businesses! Our first restaurant stop was Flanagan's. Having visited Ireland previously versus the typical Irish pubs here in the states, wow. I dined while a portrait of Father Flanagan loomed over our table and I was taken back to the Emerald Isle with a tasty stew served with a side of you guessed it, potatoes. They made my mouth water for more. Learning about the impact Father Flanagan made on the area was a bonus and I will definitely return to his namesake pub. Over the past year, Utah has introduced me to inspiring people that have an idea and then proceed to DO SOMETHING about it. Nicole Ames and her husband, Glen, are in that group. After visiting other cities that endorse local businesses through tourism they decided that 25th Street was missing this amazing opportunity. Nicole, founder of the Good Eats Tour, rallied all the participants on Grant and 25th Street around 1:30pm on Saturday. We were introduced to each other and briefed on our tour. My partners-in-crime for this gluttonous day included my husband, Jason, and my Grandma, Sandra. I love food (my backside can attest to this ) but I also love meeting new people, learning new things and spending time with my favorite peeps so I knew this tour would be perfect. Nicole explained the inspiration for the Good Eats Tour name. Her Grandma Sloan owned the Good Eats Café in Ogden where she met her Grandfather. The story has been retold over generations and while she doesn't have proof of this, she chooses to believe it's true. Being a sucker for an amazing love story, I believe it too. When you experience the Good Eats Tour make sure to bring water! It gets very hot in the summer months and you'll be happy to have it. The Good Eats Food Tours isn't just about discovering new restaurants and food, it's about rediscovering Ogden's history and its future. Nicole peppered us with fun, interesting facts about Ogden's sordid past of bootleg, prostitution, and the Electric Alley. She also reminded us of Ogden's willingness to help those in need like when the poor and destitute arrived through Union Station, we welcomed them and came together as a community. We met Rick, the owner of the business, at the Union Station and he even brought umbrellas for us as it was predicted to rain during our walking tour. Rick was absolutely delightful. He is so knowledgeable about the history of Ogden and is very entertaining. We started the tour with a fresh apple hand pie from a local bakery (Brookey Bakes) was so good and a great way to start. After meeting at Union Station and explaining how the town of Ogden became a major railroad hub in the 1800's, he walked us down the historic 25th Street District explaining the very unique and interesting history of Odgen. He is very passionate about the stories that come from Ogden's very "checkered" history and is very fun to listen to. The food tastings were all amazing! From Table Twenty for their gnochetti & brussel sprouts, to Tona Sushi Bar & Grill for samplings of their sushi, to Sapori Italian Bakery & Cafe for a cannoli and their homemade gelato, with a final stop at The Queen Bee to try their incredible chocolate. The food was all amazing, so much so that inspite of not being hungry (because the tastings are all good size tastings) we decided to go back and check out more sushi at Tona's but they had a long wait list and we unfortunately were not able to stay in Ogden that long. Good news is we will be planning a trip back to Utah, this time staying in Odgen to explore. Chris & Ashley, co-owners of New World Distillery, have perfected the ideal distillery tour. It was a seamless blend of technical distilling knowledge, equipment explanations, liquor industry lore, & of course, taste-testing. We tasted 7 of their products, straight & neat, & learned a bit about each one. The vodka was amazingly drinkable. Distilled from agave, it has a pleasant sweetness to it that differentiates it from other vodkas. It also, unsurprisingly, smells a bit like tequila. At the tail end of the tour, Chris made the smooooothest transition to a lil speech on supporting small distilling. The war against big booze rages on, but Chris definitely gained some small booze warriors that day. It's clear they love motorcycles at this distillery. Half of the spots out front are reserved for bikes. I hope to come back on my hog someday. Thank you Chris & Ashley for inviting us into your world for a little bit. We could only take one bottle with us (we got on a plane to Rhode Island the next day) but we'll definitely be back for more someday.
